FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 3, 2015 Contact: Kimberly Davis 404-906-6176 [email protected] Registration open for 14 th Annual Athens Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Athens, Ga.—Volunteers can now register to participate in the 2016 Athens Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service. The 14 th annual event will be held on Monday, January 18, 2016, and is meant to celebrate and honor the birthday of the famed civil rights leader. The Athens event is part of a national initiative that began in 1994 when the U.S. Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr., federal holiday as the only holiday observed as a national day of service. “The MLK Day of Service is a tremendous opportunity for us to come together as a community and honor one of the most important people in history—a native son of Georgia,” said Anna Truszczynski, Interim Stormwater Coordinator and Stormwater Education Specialist, Athens- Clarke County Transportation and Public Works, co-chairwoman of the MLK Day of Service Planning Committee. “We want to continue our county’s rich history of service and volunteerism through this signature event.” The Athens MLK Day of Service Kick-off event will be held at the East Athens Community Center at 8:30 a.m., with the first 200 registered volunteers getting free T-shirts. Breakfast will also be served. The featured speaker will be Dr. Diane E. Dunston, Chief Medical Officer of the Athens Neighborhood Health Center. The following six sites will serve as central sites and will begin hosting volunteers immediately following the kickoff event: Atlanta Highway Ramp Beautification Brooklyn Cemetery Cleanup and Beautification East Athens Community Center Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery Cleanup Henderson Extension Cemetery Clearing Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary Trail Clearing Smaller, affiliate sites will also host volunteers and are included on the registration website. There is no experience needed to volunteer and training will be provided. The only requirements are to dress appropriately in comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Long pants and close-toed shoes are recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult and may only volunteer at one of the "kid-friendly" sites.
