2016 Ministers’ Salary Survey Introduction Guide to Interpretation of the Report and Terms The next few pages provide overall data about minister demographics, salaries, benefits, and allowances, as well as demographics for the churches represented in the survey. Following the summary, the report includes details on specific ministry types, illuminating overall trends and relevant granular details. Key Terms Mean refers to the average and median is the midpoint of a data set. When a category had insufficient or no information, the designation n/a is used to

indicate missing data. N indicates number of people. Allowance means church-paid items such as housing, books, travel to meetings, local

mileage, and cell phone. The term benefits indicates church-paid health insurance and retirement.

Special Note on Housing Allowance It appears that there were some discrepancies on how housing allowance figures were reported by survey participants (parsonage value vs. IRS housing allowance which is not a church-paid allowance). Details about the Survey Itself This national survey was conducted February-March 2016 and reports 2016 salaries, benefits, allowances, and other data for ministers in Churches of Christ. Throughout the report, some categories show “n/a” where responses are missing or are too low to be statistically valid. The final survey size of 400 was reduced to 395 because of unusable responses. The margin of error for this number is + 4.5% which means percentage results on relevant items could be higher or lower by this percentage. For those less familiar with the statistical profession, a + 4.5% margin of error is considered very good. Finally, in compiling the data below, the study did not calculate answers that were left blank.
