The college enrolls approximately 2,500 men and women of diverse ethnic, re-ligious and social backgrounds, from across the United States and around the world.

The Vikings own a total of 186 total team championships (144 men and 42 women) since the league began in 1946-47. Augustana is currently sixth in the nation in number of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-Americans produced in all sports with 161 as of March 2016. During the 1990’s the Vikings finished third, trailing only Nebraska and M.I.T.

Along with a competitive athletic environment, student-athletes can join one or several of the school’s 150 student organizations or take advan-tage of Augustana’s wide variety of opportunities for international study. 2016 SOFTBALL - 3

HEAD COACH KRIS KISTLER Kris Kistler has been the head softball coach at Augustana College for the past 16 years and she has established the Vikings as a legitimate power in both the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and NCAA Division III. She has guided the Blue & Gold to 16 straight non-losing seasons, something that had never happened before around the Augustana campus. The Vikings have also won at least 30 games in seven of the last 12 years and eight times since 2000.

Four times in the last 11 years Kistler has led the Vikings to the CCIW tourna-ment championship and six times her teams have qualified for a berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament. In 2004 she guided Augustana to the first conference championship in softball in school history and the Vikings were 36-9 and placed third in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Augustana set a total of 10 school records in that historic 2004 campaign. The 2006 team was 33-10 overall, won the CCIW with a 13-1 overall mark, and swept the conference tournament en route to earning a host spot for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Eight school records fell in 2006. The 2007 team went 30-14, finished second in the conference regular season and won the CCIW tournament to again ad-vance to the NCAA playoffs. Eight new school records were established in 2007.

Sandwiched between the 2004 and 2006 seasons was a fine 33-12 campaign in which the Vikings were 11-3 in the CCIW and finished second in the confer-ence tournament. The 2008 team went 26-18, finished fourth in the confer-ence regular season, and advanced to the CCIW Tournament title game. In 2009 Augustana was 28-14 overall and 9-5 in the CCIW. 2010 marked another successful season for the Vikings as they compiled a 31-15 record en route to a second place finish in the CCIW tournament and a berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament, their first since 2004. Kistler’s 2014 squad finished 35-13, one win short of the school record for victories, and came within one win of reaching the first-ever NCAA Division III Super Regionals. Her 2015 Vikings finished 28-14-1 overall and reached the championship game of the CCIW Tournament.

Kistler wasted no time getting the Vikings turned around after inheriting a program that had enjoyed just one winning season in the previous eight years. After being hired in September of 1999 to replace longtime head coach Diane Schumacher, she was left with precious little time to get ready for the 2000 season. It didn’t seem to matter as she led her team to a school record for vic-tories in a single season with a 30-15 overall mark. Included in that was an 8-6 record in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and a championship in the Augustana Invitational. That team was loaded with seniors and it looked like 2001 would be a rebuilding year for the Vikings, but Kistler managed to guide them to a 23-20-1 record.

In 2002 her team finished 27-15 and placed third in the CCIW, both in regular season play and in the tournament. At the time the 27 victories tied for the second highest total in school history with teams from 1980 (27-9) and 1996 (27-14). The 2003 squad was 26-14-1 overall and 8-6 record in the conference.

Twice, in Kistler’s first season of 2000 and again in 2004, she has been named the CCIW “Coach of the Year” and in 2006 and again in 2007 the Augustana coaching staff was named “Coaching Staff of the Year.”

After graduating from Monmouth High School in Monmouth, Illinois, Kistler went on to have a fine collegiate career at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois where she helped the Red Devils to a career record of 91-57 including a school record 30-7 mark in 1996. Eureka was in the NAIA playoffs three years and Kistler made the 1994 NAIA all-district tournament team. She was named her team’s Best Defensive Player in 1996 and she graduated with a career batting average of .346 with a single season high of .394 in 1996.

A multiple sport athlete, she also played basketball for four years at Eureka and was an all-conference selection in 1994-95 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. She was team MVP and co-captain in 1995-96.

After graduation from Eureka she went to Illinois State University where she obtained her master’s degree in 1998 in Health, Physical Education and Recre-ation with a specialization in Exercise Physiology. During that time she served as an assistant softball coach at Illinois Wesleyan University where she helped lead the Titans to a 52-25 overall record and the 1997 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship.

Kistler spent the 1998-99 school year as the head coach as Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York where she was charged with starting a varsity program. She led her team to a 9-10 season in the Cardinals’ inaugural campaign. She also served as an assistant coach in basketball. In addition to her duties as head softball coach at Augustana, Kistler also serves as the senior women’s administrator for the athletic department.

2015 SOFTBALL REVIEW

Viking finish 28-14-1 overall and 7-7 and in fourth place in the CCIW; reach CCIW Tour-nament final; Laura Behnke and Jenna Teson leave their mark on Augustana record bookCoach Kris Kistler’s Augustana softball team put together a 28-14-1 record during the 2015 season, finishing 7-7 and in fourth place in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. The Vikings advanced all the way to the “if necessary” cham-pionship game in the CCIW Tournament, where they fell to Illinois Wesleyan, one win shy of earning the league’s automatic NCAA Division III Tournament berth.

Augustana bolted out of the gate with 10 straight wins in Florida. The team’s first two losses came at the hands of 18th-ranked Washington University at the Mizuno Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri. The Vikings also picked up a pair of wins over Buena Vista in the tournament.

Kistler’s club lost and tied in a doubleheader at St. Ambrose and then split four games at the Augustana Invitational to enter April and CCIW play with a record of 14-5-1.

The Vikings split twin bills at Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin to open league play, then swept a non-conference doubleheader with Knox at home. They swept Carthage, but dropped two at Elmhurst to remain .500 in the CCIW. Their confer-ence tournament prospects looked to be in jeopardy after losing both ends of a doubleheader to Wheaton at home.

After a 2-0, 6-0 sweep of Monmouth in a non-league twin bill, Augustana dropped its fifth straight conference game in the opener of a doubleheader at ninth-ranked North Central. However, the Vikings bounced back with a big 6-4 win in the night-cap and swept North Park in a twice-postponed Senior Day doubleheader to close out the regular season and earn the fourth and final spot in the CCIW Tournament.

Top seeded Illinois Wesleyan handed Augustana a 6-3 loss in the CCIW opening round, but the Vikings came back with wins that eliminated North Central (7-6) and Wheaton (8-1). Laura Behnke’s (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) 10th-inning home run—her second of the game—lifted Kistler’s club to a 4-3 win over Illinois Wesley-an to force a winner-take-all final, but the Titans won 9-2 to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Statistical leaders for the Vikings this year included Behnke’s 129 at-bats, 29 runs, 12 doubles, three triples, 26 RBI, 72 total bases and four hit-by-pitches. She also tied with junior Kassandra Anderson (Geneseo HS, Silvis, Ill.), sophomore Brittany Kellett (The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands. Texas) and freshman Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) for the team lead in home runs, with four.

Junior Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.), winner of Augustana’s Best Offensive Player Award, had team highs in hits (45) and batting average (.352). Kassie Anderson’s .593 slugging percentage was a team-best as were senior Jenna Teson’s (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) 22 walks and junior Jennifer Gray’s (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) six sacrifices. Gray was also selected at the Vikings’ Best Defensive Player.

In the circle, freshman Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) led in wins (10-3), ERA (2.58) and appearances (22). Ashley Anderson (9-8, 3.72) led in starts (19), complete games (10), innings (107 1/3) and strikeouts (51). Senior Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) (6-1, 3.20) limited the opposition to a staff-best .230 batting average and her team-high two saves both came in the CCIW Tournament. Wiersema ended her career with a sparkling 16-3 record.

Behnke, who shared team MVP honors with classmate Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), wrapped up an outstanding career, ranking in Augustana’s top ten in eight categories. Her 20 triples and 61 walks are both Viking career records. She tied for second all-time with 187 hits. Her 20 home runs and 41 doubles each rank third all-time. She’s fifth in career runs scored (115) and RBI (98) and her 500 at-bats are seventh-most in school history. Her .374 career batting average sits just outside the school’s all-time top ten.

Teson also left her mark on the school’s record book, ranking second in career at-bats (528), fourth in walks (55), sixth in runs (112), seventh in hits (176). Ashley Anderson will enter the 2016 season ranking fifth in career doubles (37), seventh in pitching wins (33), ninth in innings pitched (351 1/3) and 10th in strikeouts (181).

18 - AUGUSTANA VIKINGS 2016 SOFTBALL - 18

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSINNow in its 70th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.

Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Car-thage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.

As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew.

Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Cen-tral in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanc-tions 23 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling.

Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 186 total. Of those 186, the men have won 144 and 42 belong to the women.

The CCIW began to award championships in softball starting in the 1986-87 school year. Augustana won its first league title in 2004, taking the regular season with an 11-3 record and winning the conference tour-nament with a 7-1 victory over North Central in the championship game.
