  • Society Notes: The Military Headstone Dedication for Civil War veterans at the Best Cemetery, on Sunday, August 24th, was blessed with a beautiful blue sky day for the families and friends of Civil War Veterans Pvt. Marsee Best, Co.I, 8th Iowa Cavalry, and Pvt. John T. Wollert, Co. B, 141st Illinois Infantry. Uniformed members of the Harrison Camp, Sons of Union Veterans, led the Cere-mony which included posting of the colors by the Battle Creek VFW/Legion Post. The musket salute echoed through the valley in their honor as the new military headstones marking their graves were dedicated. Karen T. Reed, great-great granddaughter of John T. Wollert, provides genealogical data: John, born in Prussia, emigrated to America, enlisted in the Union Army May 9, 1864. He married Mary Laas December 23, 1869 in Elgin, Illinois; and filed a Homestead claim March of 1875 in Norfolk. They had 3 children: Mary J., John W., and Minnie. John T. Wollert died Dec. 22, 1877, one day short of Mary and John’s 8th Anniversary.

Marsee J. Besst was born in Indiana, August 4, 1844. He enlisted August 7, 1863 in Co. I, 8th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. He married Harriet Jane Henderson June 30, 1868 in Cassville, Wiscon-sin. He applied for a Homestead at Dakota, NE, July 16, 1869. They had 5 children and had a nice house and farm. Marsee died November 23, 1916 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Washington, D.C. He had been a policeman in the city of Norfolk, and was a member of the GAR Grand Junction Post 35, Colorado. Questions may be addressed to Karen T. Reed, Email: [email protected]

MEMBER RESEARCH; Betty Bohac continues research on her family names and has visited Archives and Churches in Germany and Czech to locate actual records. Most of her family lines have a Czech and German origin, with some Polish, in these primary names: Perske, Glaser, Pekar, Klatt, Filipi, Lhothan and Bohac. In her youth she absorbed many interesting family stories which peaked her interest in genealogy. She has been able to research and build an extensive 8-generation history on the Perske families which originated in Posen. In earlier years Posen was German, now it is part of western Poland. Her Glaser genealogy reaches back into the original Prussian archives. Betty’s postal address is 1111 Longhorn Drive, Norfolk, NE 68701

GREETINGS from our MADISON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY Our genealogy group had a good turnout July 19th at the Elkhorn Valley Museum, with the business meeting followed by a Kentucky Fried chicken dinner for all, including the new Director of the Museum, Ryan Leichenauer. It was a highlight of the meeting when Arlene Charboneau, an out of state member of long standing, was able to attend and many members met Arlene for the first time. They had a good visit getting acquainted but she was unable to join them for din-ner as she had a previously scheduled reunion with her family. The July/August newsletters were handed out, and several members paid their annual Society memberships due September 1st. Betty Bohac told about the Omaha Genealogical Society workshop on German Parish Re-cords attended in June by her and several members.

Our August 16th meeting was filled with informational demonstrations on our library computers by Ilene McCallson, who explained the various methods to access programs at the Family His-tory Library for genealogical research. It is now possible to access on line from their catalogs many more books and films. The Family History Library is located at 100 El Camino Dr., in Nor-folk, and is open Tuesday mornings for research and to order films.

Dederman School The Elkhorn Valley Museum held its annual Pioneer Day on Satur-day August 30th. Activities in the Museum included candle making, quilting & sewing, and bak-ing fresh biscuits topped with homemade butter for all to sample. It was a perfect ‘outdoor’ kind of day so Verges Park got full attention with local antique car displays, weaving demonstrations and historic antique gun displays. The Cave was visited almost nonstop by old timers to the Park who knew the story, as well as by many first timers for whom it was a ‘must see’, and were in-trigued to hear how it all was built by Dr. Verges. The historic Dederman Schoolhouse was a special attraction and was visited by all; kids couldn’t resist the old wood desks and drawing on the ancient slates. In response to requests for names of former teachers and students, we give the following list of teachers as shown in the 1982 Centennial Celebration booklet prepared at the time by Ruth Kment, Dist. #24 School Board.
