Prepare your studentsThis phase of any field trip is perhaps the most demandingand time consuming, but is crucial to the success of the expe-rience for everyone. Research has shown that students givenpre-trip instruction learn and retain more from a field tripthan those who receive no preparation. The following sug-gestions will make a difference in your next field trip:

Introduce the trip as a part of a lesson. Its always benefi-cial to integrate your trip into your curriculum. It’s a good as-sociation tip, when you say George Washington, for thestudent to visualize the building where he stayed. Associationplays a big part in any educational process.

Stimulate students’ interest for the trip. Use artifacts fromthe internet, photos, brochures, or videos to pique interest.Generate excitement with questions like, “How many stepsare there on the Nation’s Capital?”

Discuss your expectations for learning and behavior. Stu-dents may have certain expectations of your trip based onprevious trips taken with other teachers or organizations. Pre-pare them mentally for the experience by reviewing a sched-ule of activities or itinerary. Explain what and how they willlearn and what tools they will use. Don’t assume that studentspossess the observation and exploration skills necessary toconduct the activities you or someone else has designed.

Prepare students with a twenty-four hour “staging pe-riod.” Remind students to get a good night’s rest and to eata nutritious breakfast prior to departure. Ask students to mentally prepare themselves for the experience by thinkingabout how their behavior at school might not be appropriatein public spaces like museums or historic sites. Remind themto dress appropriately, which means taking into considerationthe weather and the venue. Like behavior, clothing that passesthe school’s dress code may not be appropriate in another location.

Develop a schedule of activities or itinerary. Review thiswith students and ask them to agree to follow this schedule. You can even ask them to sign the itinerary as they would alearning contract.

But the best tip we here at DAVID TOURS & TRAVEL canoffer is have fun.
