2016 ANNUAL REVIEW I 5

Those not familiar with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead sometimes imagine it to be a terribly sad place. As part of our Hospital’s ‘family’, you know that, despite the intensely emotional nature of what happens here, the Hospital is more often uplifting, a place where miracles happen and fun and laughter frequently line the road to recovery.

The courage and spirit of our patients, families, staff, volunteers and donors contribute significantly to this inspiring atmosphere. The brave kids we treat motivate us to strive for the best outcomes to enrich their lives and give them the best chance for a happy and healthy future.

The Hospital is a place of hope for thousands of sick children and their families who turn to us for our world-class paediatric health care, ranging from burns management to epilepsy monitoring, heart surgery, organ transplants and cancer treatment.

Without our donors, it simply would not be possible to strive for the high standards of child health and wellbeing that we do. I am so proud of the involvement of donors in virtually every aspect of our work.

Your support allows us to employ the best staff, invest in the world-class equipment, build incredible new facilities, pioneer research and launch support services for families in their time of greatest need.

Thank you very much for your continued support and for partnering with us to fulfil our important mission of improving child health through clinical care, research, education and advocacy.

We rely on you and your generosity each and every day.

2016 ANNUAL REVIEW I 6

Cardiac Catheter Interventional SuiteA new Cardiac Catheter Inventional Suite was officially opened at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead this year.

The $3.4 million Cardiac Catheter Interventional Suite (CCIS), generously funded by Sargents Pies Charitable Foundation, offers safer and more efficient treatment for children with complex heart conditions, reducing their exposure to radiation and improving their recovery time.

The suite will be the first in our state to offer a hybrid space where doctors can perform cardiac catheter procedures at the same time as cardiac surgery. This will help to reduce the number of anaesthetics used and will create a more seamless path to repairing a child’s heart within the wider Hospital environment where the best care and support services are on hand.

MEMORY StrategyThe MEMORY Strategy is The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s commitment to providing the technology and systems needed to safely provide world-class care for children.

We have significantly expanded our clinical technology, including the introduction of electronic medications management, oncology protocols and clinical documentation, this year. We are advancing My Health Memory, an integrated bedside system that will unlock a new world of entertainment and communication options for parents as well as forming a foundation for future sharing of health information to support each child’s health journey.

The first stage of benefits has been experienced by inpatients as funding for the technology fit-out in wards is nearly completed thanks to generous donors. Further support is needed to continue the expansion of this vital technology.Highlights

Award successA National Award was recently won by The Children’s Hospital at Westmead from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS). The Healthcare Measurement Award was awarded for Sustaining Improvements in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Nutrition Outcomes for patients aged 2-18 years.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life-threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has been leading the way in treating this condition over many years, improving quality of life and life expectancy for these patients.

Two teams from the Children’s Cancer Research Unit at Kids Research Institute also received awards at the 2015 Premier’s Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research.

The Big Data, Big Impact award ($60,000) will enhance the use of personalised data for cancer treatment and the Excellence in Translational Cancer Research Award ($20,000) will contribute towards a project looking at brain cancer and chemotherapy side effects in children.

Heart Lung MachineHundreds of cardiac patients each year at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead will benefit from a new Heart Lung Machine. The state-of-the-art machine was funded entirely by community donations, with close to 700 people making a contribution.

The Heart Lung Machine is a vital and lifesaving piece of equipment used for children requiring open heart surgery, performing the role of a child’s heart and lungs while the heart is stopped.

Each year more than 4,500 babies, children and adolescents are treated by the Hospital’s Heart Centre for Children, with more than 500 of these patients requiring surgical procedures.

1000 cochlear implantsA major milestone was celebrated by one of our talented Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons, A/Prof Catherine Birman, who has now successfully inserted more than 1,000 cochlear implants.

A cochlear implant is a surgically-implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing in both ears.

A/Prof Birman is one of a limited number of surgeons worldwide with the skills and experience to perform this delicate surgery.

New playground for burns patientsYoung burns patients now have a place to play and speed their recovery following the opening of a new playground in Clubbe Ward.

The $180,000 playground was donated and built by Mirvac and its contractors and suppliers to create a joyful place where children recovering from burns can begin the process of rehabilitation through the simple joy of play.

As the referral centre for all major paediatric burns in NSW, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead treats around 1,500 children for major burns each year.

Advocacy projects – online CPR training, KidsQuit, ConcussionThe Children’s Hospital at Westmead continually leads the way in advocating for the health, wellbeing and safety of all children in the community. This year’s campaigns focussed on CPR training, reducing smoking rates among adults and young people and raising awareness of the dangers of concussion for children who play team sports.

2016 ANNUAL REVIEW I 11

Time is often spent in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead while doctors try and understand what is happening to Brock and how to keep him as healthy as possible in the future.

Despite the challenges he faces every day, Brock is just a normal little boy with a big smile and a brave heart.

“Every day Brock has a needle and never flinches, he just tells me to make sure it goes in the right spot. He recently had a four-hour MRI scan and laid still

for four hours, never once complaining.”

“He doesn’t realise that while he idolises Batman, Spiderman and Superman, to everyone who knows him, he is the greatest superhero of all.”

Just like the superheroes he admires, Brock is brave and strong.

Brocks’s condition is so rare, it doesn’t even have a name. A form of muscle disease, it has many effects on his body, including bone and muscle problems, severe digestion issues and sleep apnoea.

Doctors first began examining Brock’s condition when he was a baby and his Mum, Fiona, noticed that he did not kick his legs and made no attempt to roll or turn. He has since had many operations and procedures and has not grown much over the past four years as his body isn’t able to process nutrients to thrive. He has relied on his electric wheelchair since just three years of age.

Fiona provides around-the-clock care to keep him healthy. “Brock’s disease has had a major impact on me as a mother. Learning to balance being a mother and a carer is tough, especially including daily medical procedures that you would never imagine having to perform on your beautiful, innocent child.”

2016 ANNUAL REVIEW I 14

World-class clinical care

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is world-renowned for providing outstanding clinical care, with internationally-respected doctors and professors leading the way in their speciality fields.

Many clinicians have had a long association with the Hospital, some since our Camperdown days, and have gained international experience which they now apply to the care provided to patients at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

As a major teaching hospital, significant time and resources are invested in training junior doctors. There are 360 registrars working within the Hospital each year, gaining skills and experience as part of their training.

Supported by donated funds, the Hospital has a range of Fellowship positions for doctors preparing to enter specialist fields. In areas such as Neurology, Cardiology and Radiology, these Fellowships add another dimension to our patient care while enhancing the specialised skills needed to treat patients with specific conditions and needs. Fellowships ensure that we keep the best and brightest staff here for the benefit of our patients.

The expertise of our clinicians is not just confined to the Hospital, with telehealth and rural outreach programs taking our care to the people who need it most and not disadvantaging them by location. This not only benefits patients from far afield, it also provides valuable training and development opportunities for other health care professionals in the community to work collaboratively with our expert staff.

Donor funds are often used to update medical equipment in the Hospital, allowing clinicians to apply the latest techniques and provide the safest and most accurate treatment options for children and young people.

We are exceptionally proud of our team of doctors at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Many of them choose to work with children instead of adults as they know the spirit and tenacity children possess. Donors help these clinicians to give sick children the best chance for a happy and healthy future.

Dr Yishay OrrHeart Centre for ChildrenI’m constantly amazed by the bravery of our patients and their loved ones. They face complex and difficult illnesses with grace and strength, understanding that the pathway may be long and difficult but that we are here to help them get through it.

Dr Ken PeacockHead of General MedicineEvery day I marvel at the courage and resilience of sick kids and their families. Children can fall sick very quickly but can often improve quickly as well. This is usually without a word of complaint, unlike us adults when we get sick.

Dr Scott SchofieldEmergency DepartmentThe Emergency Department is a challenging and rewarding place to work. It attracts all problems, big and small. It is humbling to remember that what may be an average day in the office for me, could be the best or worst day of a family’s life.

Dr Joanne GingGeneral MedicineTo care for the brave children and families is a privilege we don’t take for granted. We embrace the families and include them as part of their child’s health care team.

Dr Simon PagetKids Rehab The children and families I see are often brave in lots of different ways, whether it be preparing for a test or treatment or working hard to relearn skills like walking after a stroke or brain injury. A child’s determination is always inspiring.

Dr Arany Nerminathan General MedicineSometimes we have to give bad news, yet parents of sick children always have hope and are the biggest advocates for their sick child. The importance of the love and support from parents, siblings and carers cannot be underestimated.

The glasses have very high-powered lenses to help the eye focus and teach her brain how to see in greater detail.

Despite their challenges, the family has never let blindness hold them back from enjoying life, with trips to the local shops, sporting events, City and Zoo.

With her new level of vision, Myfawny is now learning to crawl and explore the world around her. Once she is fully on the move, Heather will put small bells on Myfawny’s socks so she can keep track of her around the house.

“Myfawny is such a happy baby. It’s my dream that she grows up to be a valuable member of society and have the same opportunities as my other children who can see well. The Hospital has given us hope for a bright future.”

Cute-as-a-button Myfawny is never lonely with her loving family by her side. There’s Mum and Dad, Garry and Heather, her five brothers, four sisters and, of course, loving guide dogs, Narjee and Hero.

Myfawny was born with congenital cataracts, inherited from her Mum and Grandmother. Four of her siblings have the same condition, which causes blindness. Her cataracts were surgically removed just after birth, allowing her to see some bright colours and shapes.

She was recently fitted with a special pair of aphacic glasses by the Opthalmology Department at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, donated by generous donors, Essilor, tripling her field of vision to around 30 centimetres from her face.

“When Myfawny wore her glasses for the first time it was a true joy as she laughed and giggled at her toys and discovered her very interesting hands!”, Heather said.

2016 ANNUAL REVIEW I 22

Researchers at the Kids Research Institute, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s dedicated research arm, are working hard to find the causes, cures and improved treatments for a range of serious childhood illnesses.

The unique positioning of the researchers as part of the Hospital environment means that a ‘bench to bedside’ approach can be used, taking findings from the lab straight to the Hospital wards for maximum impact on child health.

Many of our researchers are also clinicians, motivating them to unlock the puzzles of childhood illness that they see every day in their patients on the wards and in the outpatient clinics.

Our research staff range from young PHD students to respected Professors. Each play an important role in mixing enthusiasm and experience, fresh ideas with proven techniques.

Research grants are an important source of funding for the Kids Research projects, as well as community support. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is fortunate to be supported by donors who have the foresight to see the long-term value of research and it’s immeasurable potential to change the lives of generations to come.

Our passionate team of world-class researchers are dedicated to turning today’s research into tomorrow’s medicine and improving the lives of children with many illnesses including cancer, bone diseases, genetic conditions, diabetes, infectious diseases, brain and muscle disorders, sleep disorders, kidney and liver disease.

A/Prof Jennifer ByrneHead of the Children’s Cancer Research UnitCancer patients and their families have to deal with many unknowns, including whether their cancer will respond to treatment, and in some cases, whether the patient will live or die as a result. This requires almost unimaginable courage. Patients and families are the real heroes at our Hospital.

Nese SinmazPhD student, Institute for Neuroscience and Muscle ResearchDay-to-day I’m focused on completing my laboratory tasks, which can be challenging, but in moments when I focus on the big picture, I know my efforts as a scientist will ultimately benefit our young kids. She regularly battles sickness from infections and dehydration and she had a central line inserted to administer medicines, fluids, nutrients or blood products as her tiny veins are weak from years of treatment.

Despite the many challenges Jesse has faced in her short life, she is a happy, kind, strong and vibrant little girl.

She loves singing and dancing, movies and spending time with her sister, Laura, and her brother, Ashton.

Her parents are so proud of Jesse’s fighting spirit and grateful to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for giving her the best chance at life.

“We now treasure the little things, all the milestones in life. It has been a hard road physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. But Jesse is so strong and brave. She makes everything worth fighting for.”

Just eight years old and having endured 18 operations to date, Jesse is truly a brave warrior.

She was born with a condition known as OEIS Complex, a very rare series of birth defects resulting in some of her internal organs being on the outside of her body and her spine malformed. She was rushed to the Grace Centre for Newborn Care at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where surgeons spent nine hours trying to reconstruct her tiny newborn body.

Her parents, Jason and Krystle, were told to expect the worst – if Jesse was to survive, it would be unlikely she would walk. “Much to everyone’s delight, after spending half of her life in Hospital, Jesse took her first steps at 14 months of age,” Krystle said.

Jesse has spent many years being fed by a pump as she is missing her large intestine, preventing her from growing at the same rate as other children her age.

Nurses are an integral part of our healthcare team, providing around the clock care for patients and their families and carers. They represent a diverse range of age and experience and bring a rich and varied cultural knowledge to the healthcare team.

Care is family focussed with the patient, family and carer actively participating in the planning and delivery of care with nursing staff and the healthcare team.

Nursing care is centred on quality and safety, working collaboratively to ensure that knowledge and experience are shared and staff are supported in their learning and development. Through supported educational opportunities and access to expert education, the nursing staff are afforded learning through contemporary and innovative means such as those delivered via simulation in the Kim Oates Australian Paediatric Simulation Centre, a facility supported by generous donors.

Newly graduated Registered Nurses are supported and coached through their first year of practice with the Transition to Professional Practice Program and staff who wish to develop expertise within a specific area are able to participate in Specialty Transition Programs. In the Nursing Research and Practice Development Hub, our nurses are actively involved in a number of research initiatives, informing care her and more globally.

The vital role that our nurses play in the patient and family/carer journey through hospitalisation and beyond is well recognised and we were proud to see nursing staff named as finalists for the 2016 NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards. With healthcare continually evolving, we are committed to supporting our nursing staff as we strive to achieve excellence and lead innovation on the national and international stage.

Matthew GowNurse Unit Manager, Wade WardWe encourage families to take part in decisions about their child’s care. This helps them become a vital part of the team that is treating their child’s illness. Annette BillettRegistered Nurse, Clancy Ward A baby who received a liver transplant was on the ward for a total of about six months before he went home well. Several months later his family came to visit and it brought tears to my eyes to see his plump, rosy cheeks and white skin, his crystal clear eyes smiling at me and his chubby, little legs.

Jude FrostClinical Nurse Consultant, Palliative CareGiven what so many of the children and their families that I see on daily basis experience and cope with, bravery hardly seems an adequate word to describe the tenacity, hopefulness, uncomplaining and often grateful way they deal with what’s happening in their lives. Josh tackled his recovery head-on, standing on his repaired leg just one day after his surgery while still in intensive care.

Over the course of three weeks he learnt to walk again and headed straight to the swimming pool once finally discharged from hospital six months later, swimming an incredible 20 laps.

Josh’s parents, Al and Jackie, are incredibly proud of their courageous boy who has been through so much over the past year. Quiet, studious and caring, Josh is also a great role model to his two younger brothers, Jasper and Jordan.

“We are just so grateful that Josh has been returned to health. We have our boy back,” Al said.

Josh was going well at school, learning to speak Chinese and running and swimming many kilometres each week. His sore leg was dismissed as a sporting injury at first but once the real cause was uncovered, his world came crashing down.

A tumour in Josh’s leg was soon identified as an Osteosarcoma, a cancerous tumour in the bone just above his left knee. Time spent at school and playing sports was soon replaced with over 100 long nights on the oncology ward at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

He bravely embarked on a gruelling chemotherapy treatment plan, as well as limb salvage surgery. This kind of cancer has often resulted in leg amputation in other patients but Josh was lucky to benefit from a new approach. His leg has been fitted with a special $80,000 prosthesis which extends from his hip to his shin. It can be adjusted through an internal gearbox and external induction magnet as he grows, avoiding future surgery and extensive rehabilitation.

Allied Health staff at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead prevent, diagnose and treat a range of conditions and illnesses and often work within a multidisciplinary health team alongside doctors and nurses to provide the best patient outcomes.

Allied Health teams in the Hospital environment include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, social workers, speech pathologists, child life therapists, audiologists, medical imaging staff, orthotists and pharmacists.

They contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of sick children and are an integral part of a child’s health care team, especially if they have a chronic or complex condition or are undertaking a rehabilitation program after a significant illness or injury.

Allied Health staff from a variety of disciplines are a key part of the collaborative team-based approach used at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

They enhance clinical and nursing care and often provide valuable perspectives on a child’s health needs, especially when considering how best to manage their health within the context of their normal family life and commitments to school, sports and social activities.

Donors help to purchase specialist equipment for Allied Health teams, as well as funding specific positions, for example the Hospital’s two Music Therapists. Music therapy helps to lift the spirits of sick kids and, for many, it helps to give them the courage and positivity to face the frightening aspects of being sick and in hospital.

This year, our Hospital introduced the first Chair of Allied Health Research, in conjunction with the University of Sydney. Prof Joshua Burns facilitates research, including mentoring of future Allied Health researchers, and advocates for the best patient care within the various Allied Health specialities.

Kerry WestPhysiotherapistThe Children’s Hospital at Westmead is purpose built for children and families with play spaces and toys, parent accommodation, colours and artworks. It is great to help children and families cope with illness or injury in a child-friendly environment.

Sandra PengillyChild Life TherapistA young child who had sustained a significant brain injury was trying to learn how to play again. We were working with some play dough and the young child started to laugh. Her Mum cried and said, “Oh wow, it’s my little girl, I can actually see she’s back now.”

Georgette DanyalOccupational TherapistWe build a relationship of trust with children and families. We thrive on seeing patients grow up and make the most of opportunities in life with our guidance and support.

Sandra SpaldingSocial WorkerIt takes real courage to face critical and potentially life-changing traumatic injuries or illness and emerge from the experience stronger, more resilient and prepared to face the future with confidence and optimism.

Adele DaunceySpeech PathologistEvery day we see sick children learning new things, developing new skills and building new relationships. To overcome their adversities and to continue to develop and learn while sick shows how truly brave and resilient these children are.

Alexandria BartropDieticianThe best thing about working at the Hospital is being able to see the difference you make to children’s lives. Having gratitude and appreciation come from both the patient’s families and the multidisciplinary team you are working with is vital for such a positive and progressive working environment.

2016 ANNUAL REVIEW I 43

It was then that Ava’s ten-year-old sister, Lily, was identified as a suitable donor. She was admitted to the Hospital to have her bone marrow cells removed and then was well enough to go straight to Ava’s room to see them being directly transferred into her baby sister via an IV drip.

Although Ava still faces a lifetime of health issues relating to her condition, the bone marrow transplant has completely transformed her life for now.

She is a bright and happy girl who loves cookies, Elmo, playing hide and seek and bopping along to her favourite music.

“Seeing Ava so well now, it’s amazing to think back to the doctors and nurses getting us through one day to the next, sometimes just hour by hour,” Lina said.

“I am so incredibly proud of both my brave girls.”

Many young sisters share a tight bond, but none tighter than Ava and Lily, after Lily transformed the life of her baby sister, Ava.

Ava was born with a rare genetic condition called Mucopolysaccharidosis type 1 – or MPS 1. This disease affects many vital systems in the body, with the most devastating effect on the brain.

Ava’s parents, Alex and Lina, knew something wasn’t right in their baby girl, leading to a shock diagnosis of this disease that has no cure when she was just ten weeks old.

“We were absolutely devastated. It was like a bad nightmare,” Lina said.

Their care team under the Western Sydney Genetics Program at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead acted quickly, suggesting that an immediate bone marrow transplant from a suitable donor could halt the effects of this disease on her brain. With no time to source a donor outside the family, the chances of her parents and siblings being suitable donors were slim.
