NOTE: This free admission is for 4-H Day only at the various exhibitions, not for every day that an exhibition runs. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE OLD HOME WEEK! In the case of Old Home Week, there is a $5.00 gate fee for 7 - 12 years of age, and a $12.00 gate

fee for over 12 years of age, or you can purchase an exhibitor’s pass for the entire Old Home Week

for $25.00.

ATTENTION 4-H EXHIBITORS OF NON ANIMAL PROJECTS 2016 EXHIBITION CIRCUIT

Once again for 2016, Alberton (Prince County) and Crapaud Exhibitions are on the same weekend. Items for judging should be dropped off as follows: Alberton (Prince County) - at Alberton Exhibition Grounds between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 28 or at the Kensington 4-H Office on or before Wednesday, July 27. Crapaud - at Crapaud Exhibition Grounds on Friday, July 29, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. or at the Provincial 4-H Office on or before Thursday, July 28. The Exhibition Circuit will pick up the items from these two Exhibitions and take them to Old Home Week, Dundas, Evangeline and Rural Youth Fair. The items should be picked up at the Rural Youth Fair (which is being held at the Alberton Exhibition Grounds) on Saturday, September 10 4:30 pm. Food project members are reminded that the 4-H offices do not have fridge facilities in which to store the food items. Therefore, take into account freshness when deciding where and when to drop off food items. Also note that cake decorating members MUST have a freshly decorated cake for each exhibition.

Note: It is not the responsibility of the 4-H Specialist to take the project items from a club’s Achievement Day. Please see above for when and where projects may be dropped for the Exhibition Circuit.

4-H PARTICIPATION IN FAIRS & EXHIBITIONS

I. GENERAL

1. Only PEI 4-H members are eligible to compete in Island 4-H exhibitions.

2. In order to compete in a class, the 4-H member must exhibit the required item/animal (as listed in the back of this book) from the current 4-H year.

3. A judge reserves the right to give an article a lower place ribbon than the placing ribbon expected. In the rare occasion of this happening, the member will be notified as to the reason for the lower

placing. This is done in an attempt to assure that all placings are representative of top quality work.

4. Articles may be shown at an exhibition even if an Achievement Day has not been held by the time

of the exhibition. (NOTE: This would hold true for Crapaud and Alberton only as all achievement days MUST be completed by July 31 and only these two exhibitions are held in July.)

II. ARTICLES 1. The article required for a specific project class is listed in the back of this booklet. Only those

articles listed will be judged. If an item is not the required item for the project or does not meet all specifications (i.e. size), it will be disqualified.

2. 4-H staff are not responsible for articles that are broken or lost while on the exhibition circuit or at

exhibitions. It must be understood that dirt and wrinkle damage as well as losses and breakage can

occur.

3. Prize money won will be mailed to the club’s overall leader in the fall (usually in October).

4. 4-H exhibition entry tags are available at the Kensington, Montague and Provincial 4-H Offices.

Once filled out, this tag is good for all exhibitions. 4-H entry tags are to be attached to articles by string, pins or twist ties, depending on the article. Please make sure the tags are securely affixed to the articles.

5. Special ribbons will be put on Exploring 4-H and Cloverbud items, and Junior Leadership books. These projects will not be judged. Please do not remove these special ribbons between exhibitions.

III. LIVESTOCK

1. A 4-H’er must show the project animal with which he/she has been working during the current project year. The only exceptions to this rule would be if a member was sick and unable to show or

if the member was participating in another 4-H event. In such cases, another 4-H member could show the animal in the breed class. Also, if a 4-H member has animals showing in two different classes at the same time, she/he may get another 4-H member to show one of the animals; i.e. if she/he has a dairy goat and a beef animal that are showing at the same time. Also, if some classes are combined and the 4-H member has an animal in each of the age categories that are combined, then the 4-H member may have another 4-H member show one of the animals. The above refers to BREED CLASSES ONLY. 4-H

MEMBERS MAY NOT SHOW OTHER MEMBERS’ ANIMALS IN SHOWMANSHIP CLASSES. Classes WILL

NOT be held for members showing in another show ring.

2. In the event that a 4-H member’s project animal develops behavior that may cause physical harm, is injured, becomes seriously ill, or dies, the Procedure for Handling Problems Related to Livestock

Projects on page 9 MUST be followed.

3. Members are allowed to show more than one project animal. However, each animal is a separate

project, therefore, an animal identification form for each animal must have been received at the Provincial 4-H Office by May 15. Also, members may NOT have two animals in the same category,

i.e. two Senior Fancy Does or two Market Lambs.

4. A copy of the registration papers must be included with the animal identification form for beef and

dairy animals. If beef registration papers are not available to be submitted by the deadline date of May 15, then a photocopy of these papers must be submitted to the Provincial 4-H Office by August 15 or members will not be eligible to show in the Royal Beef Selection Class at the Rural Youth Fair. This motion was passed at the December 8,

2004 Agricultural Projects Committee Meeting.

5. All animals must meet exhibition health standards.

6. Exhibitors are responsible for their own supply of hay and straw.

7. Calves must be halter broken.

8. 4-H members exhibiting livestock must register during the registration time scheduled on the

agenda of a particular exhibition. At some exhibitions, members will be required to wear an assigned harness and number while showing.

9. A dress code is recommended:

Whites for dairy, sheep and goat exhibitors

Breed colors for beef exhibitors White lab coat for rabbit and poultry exhibitors

Western dress for Western horse exhibitors English dress for English horse exhibitors

Dark pants and white shirt for Draft Horse exhibitors

10. Safety helmets are mandatory for horsemanship and driving classes. They are not mandatory for

showmanship classes.

11. 4-H members with animals in heat should tell the 4-H ringmaster upon entering the ring.

12. Judges will be approved by the 4-H Agriculture Committee for Old Home Week and Rural Youth

Fair.

Page 6: 2016 4-H FAIRS & EXHIBITIONS BOOKFAIRS & EXHIBITIONS I. GENERAL 1. Only PEI 4-H members are eligible to compete in Island 4-H exhibitions. 2. In order to compete in a class, the 4-H

13. In the following philosophy of the 4-H program, ―Learn To Do By Doing‖, the Agricultural Projects

Committee has rules, ―that beef and dairy members 14 years of age and older are not permitted to get help from anyone other than another 4-H member. This ruling will be enforced by the Agricultural Projects Committee at all 4-H shows this summer and any member found obtaining assistance from a non 4-H member will be disqualified from conformation and showmanship classes at that exhibition” .

14. The ear tag number, RFID number, or tattoo number must be on the animal identification form. If

an ear tag comes out after its number has been sent to the Provincial 4-H Office, be sure to call

368-4833 at least one week prior to any exhibition at wish you wish to show.

15. THE JUDGES’ DECISION IS FINAL!!

16. The exhibition entry form must be received by the Provincial 4-H office staff by 4:30 p.m. on July 15. If not, member will Not be permitted to show at that summer’s exhibitions. CALF CLASSES AT 4-H SHOWS

Splitting of classes will be up to the discretion of the judge. If splitting occurs, the number of

animals selected from each heat will be the judge’s decision.

Judges will be asked to place 4-H livestock classes to 8th place. All other animals showing in the

class will be asked to remain at ringside. Judges will be asked to give comments to all 4-H’ers in the class either individually or publicly.

NOTE: The decision to hold Championship Classes at an exhibition is left to the discretion of that

exhibition’s 4-H committee. If there are Championship Classes, the top two animals from each class

will return to the ring.

than five animals registered for a class, but stay within breeds to combine calf and yearling clas-ses. For the dairy, classes will also be combined if less than five are registered. The dairy would

be two age groups next to each other, not skipping a group, i.e. Junior and Intermediate Hol-steins but not Junior and Senior Holsteins unless there were no Juniors.

PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING PROBLEMS RELATED TO LIVESTOCK PROJECTS

If the procedure outlined above is not followed, the substitution of an

animal will not be permitted

In the event that a 4-H member’s project animal develops behavior that may cause physical

1. The 4-H member must immediately inform his/her 4-H Project Leader of the situation.

2. If circumstances indicate that the project animal may not be sound or fit to show at

Achievement Day, the 4–H member and leader must inform the 4-H District Officer and the Provincial 4-H Office of the situation as soon as possible.

3. If the 4-H member wishes to substitute an animal for any of the above reasons in order

to complete his/her year’s project work, the 4-H member must submit to their District 4-H Officer and the Provincial 4-H Office a written request documenting

circumstances leading to the need for the substitution.

4. If the project animal cannot be shown at Achievement Day, a substitution will be

permitted if the required notification procedure has been followed.

5. If the 4-H member wishes to substitute an animal for any of the above reasons, in order to complete his/her year’s project work and also show at fairs and exhibitions, the 4-H member must submit to the District Officer and the Provincial 4-H

Office a written request documenting circumstances leading to the need for the substitution supported by a certificate from a licensed veterinarian. Requests will be

reviewed by the Agricultural Projects Committee. The Committee’s decision is final.

6. An animal that has been substituted will be permitted to be shown at fairs and

exhibitions but will not be eligible to participate in the Royal Selection Classes.

CLASS SPECIFICATIONS

Showmanship - The purpose of showmanship is to teach courtesy, good grooming, pose, confidence

and how to fit, train, and handle a horse/pony. The member is judged on how he/she has fitted and

groomed the animal, how it behaves in the ring, as well as the member’s ability to handle the horse/pony in the show ring. The size and conformation of the horse/pony is not considered. Animals may be

shown in either a halter or a bridle. Please note: There will be a showmanship at halter class offered for members who are only participating in showmanship. Members will be permitted to show a borrowed horse in this class. Members in Showmanship Classes are not required to wear

helmets, but will not be marked down for choosing to wear one.

In Hand Obstacle - This class if for members showing at halter only. The object of this class is for the horse/pony and handler to navigate a series of obstacles. (Patterns for this class will be posted at least

an hour before the class is to begin). Horses/ponies are judged on their obedience to perform each task in a fluid and calm manner. Obstacles may include any of the following: walking over a bridge and/or

tarp, mail box drop, walk and/or trot/jog over poles, rein back, flag pick up, side pass, small jump,

ground tie, turn on the forehand, and pivots. Members in this class are not required to wear helmets, but will not be marked down for choosing to wear one.

Horsemanship - The object of this class is to demonstrate the horsemanship qualities of the rider.

They will execute the provided pattern. They may also be required to work on the rail in both directions

at the discretion of the judge. They will be judged on seat, hands, legs and their ability to control their mount. Members in the Horsemanship Classes must wear helmets.

Pleasure - This class will be judged on the performance, good manners, disposition, condition and

quality of the gaits of the horse/pony. The horse/pony should look like a pleasure to ride. Members will be asked to work on the rail in both directions. Show officials reserve the right to combine any

intermediate and advanced pleasure classes if the entries are too low and/or time is an issue.

Members in the Pleasure Classes must wear helmets.

Walk & Trot “Simon Says”: This is an elimination class open to preliminary riders only. Many horsemanship commands may be asked for during this class, but the riders are only to obey the horsemanship commands from the judge that start with the phrase ―Simon Says‖. The rider is

eliminated from the class if they follow an order that doesn't begin with "Simon says," or if they fail to

do what ―Simon‖ says to do. When they are eliminated they are called in the middle of the ring. The last member left is the winner. Members in the Command Classes must wear helmets.

Command - This is an elimination class open to intermediate and advanced riders only. Many horsemanship commands may be asked for during this class. The judge eliminates those who fail to
