Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia is thrilled to announce the release of PZYK Vol.1 - a deluxe triple vinyl and 2CD compilation celebrating the current neo-psychedelic underground. Featuring a mix of exclusive tracks, re-mixes, rarities and album cuts, the compilation spans and charts the global PZYK dias-pora. All the artists featured on the release have either performed at Liverpool Psych Fest, or are heading to Liverpool for this.

Berlin based duo Africaine 808 will release their debut album Basar via NY imprint Golf Channel (home to Mark E, Juju & Jordash and DJ Nature) in January next year. Basar pushes their divine blend of West African bass and rhythms, disco, island-funk and house to newer heights. Their deep and timeless debut is about Freedom and Freedom only and is an album that reaches for the party Arthur Russell was talking about when he said I wanna see all my friends at once. Africaine 808 are Dirk Leyers, formerly one half of Closer Musik, and Berlin DJ and established artist Nomad. The pair met in Berlin at the city’s annual sum-mer techno demonstration Fuckparade in 2000, where they caught the infamous Techno Viking808 project grew out of Nomad’s Vulkandance parties; a melting pot of African, Latin, and Caribbean club music. The title Basar comes from the ancient term for oriental marketplace”, a place to experience a multitude of impres-

sions with your senses. Like an exotic marketplace, Basarer squirmer of a bassline on Language of the Bass ft. Alex Voicesbeat gem. Whereas Basa Basa takes it back to the dancefloor for a sweaty rhythmic number that bounces off the walls with its tribal funk groove. Recent 12” single “Rhythm Is All You Can Dance”, also makes an appearance; wedding funk, earthy rhythms and frenzied African grooves to the gurgle of an 808. The duo made their debut back in 2013 with Tummy Tummy; which featured on Will Speculators W.T. Recordings compilation “DJ MUSCLE.” The following year Golf Channel put out “Lagos New York.” Pairing New York flecked disco with West African bass and rhythms, “Lagos New York” made for one of 2014’s most essential electronic releases. Having found the right home with one of the best labels (and parties) in New York City, the Berliners debut album Basar has the feeling of an essential piece of music all over - a big, brooding, emotional and uplifting record that you can dance, laugh and cry to.

As we age, a growing and ever changing identity is something we never shake. The distance between the magic and awe of a child’s mind to the mentality of a teenager is palpable. When you hit your 20s, it’s safe to say a few things are different from that time you were 16. Though she maintains some reservations about the implications of something as abstract as identity, Charlie Hilton, known up until now for her work in the band Blouse, has now forged a new one with her debut solo album, Palana. Enlisting Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait as producer, Hilton freely experimented with diverse sounds and moods - some minimal and some cacophonous - out of the confines of a band structure. Tracks like “Pony” harken back to the psychedelic strengths of Blouse, saluting bands like Broadcast and United States of America, and then there’s “100 Million,” that rounds out the album in a soft, acoustic and light-hearted way with labelmate Mac DeMarco lending his talents on percussion and back-up vocals.

Though he may not be a household name, Kenniff’s evocative, distinctly American music has become quietly ubiquitous in the past few years, often appearing on NPR, in films, on TV, and in ads for Apple, Face-book, and Google among others. Recorded over the course of three years, the material on his new album Sometimes functions as a journal, documenting brief moments in Kenniff’s day when he could turn to the piano as a source of solace and unending creative possibilities. Kenniff wrote and recorded everything on the album with the exception of the track “A Word I Give”, which is a collaboration with preeminent Japa-nese pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto, who once described Goldmund’s music as “...so, so, so beautiful.” In an interview with NPR’s Weekend Edition Keith Kenniff discussed his appreciation of Civil War era music, and it’s ability to covey “...so much story in so few notes.” Similarly, these improvisations manage to be richly evocative despite their technical and compositional simplicity, using subtle details and dynamics to express what might otherwise be inexpressible.

Odetta Hartman is a young woman keeping the spirit of Old New York alive. With a heart-stopping voice and wide-ranging instrumental talent, she carries cowboy soul into a new era where country can clash with computers, and bluegrass isn’t afraid of bass.

Scottish BAFTA-nominated composer and songwriter FRANCIS MACDONALD drums with Teenage Fanclub and has worked with a range of artists (Alex Chilton, Dan Penn, The Pastels, Kevin Ayers, Kate Rusby, Edwyn Collins, Ian McCulloch, BMX Bandits, Belle & Sebastian, Cairn String Quartet and Max Richter, etc.)

Milk ‘n’ Cookies are the stuff of legends - or would be legends. Forming in the early 70s in Long Island, New York, this power pop group was originally signed to Island Records and seemed destined for greatness. Yet, through many cases of “wrong place, wrong time,” the band never managed to break. The core line-up of the band was made up of Ian North, Justin Strauss, Sal Maida and Mike Ruiz and, in their time, they played classic NYC venues like CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City. They shared bills with everyone from Talking Heads to The Ramones and have amassed a cult following, influencing the likes of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Debbie Harry (Blondie). After working extensively with the band members, Milk ‘n’ Cookies is a lavish reissue of the group’s entire recorded output. Housed in a deluxe slipcase is the band’s original legendary LP, a 2xLP featuring rare and unreleased tracks, as well as a book that chronicles the full history of the band’s wild ride through the music biz - as told by the band themselves, through accounts from their many (in)famous admirers and through never-before-seen photographs.

Steady Rollin Records/VizzTone Label Group is proud to announce the release of multi-award winning guitar player/songwriter/singer Bob Margolin’s MY ROAD. MY ROAD brings a fresh focus for Margolin - both musi-cally and lyrically. The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer Michael Freeman and recorded at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, NC. Joining Margolin (guitar/vocals) in the studio are Chuck Cotton (drums/vocals) and Tad Walters (guitar/harp). The album features 6 new Margolin originals (plus 2 co-writes) and 4, written by friends, Margolin had long wanted to cover.

Organic, sparse, and profoundly simple, The K.O.A.Tapes (Vol. 1) was recorded on Kate’s iPhone 5 and/or using two microphones in her living room and at various impromptu locations across America. A select cast of stellar musicians including the legendary Spooner Oldham (B-3 Organ), Missy Raines (Upright Bass), Sally Van Meter (Dobro), Joey Miskulin (Accordion), Laura Boosinger (Banjo), Steve Smith (Mandolin), and John Kirk (Fiddle) added a flourish of subtle embellishments to make The K.O.A Tapes a hum-along listen-ing pleasure. Track one (Some Song) pays homage to a quote by 13th century Persian poet, Rumi: “Please, universal soul, practice some song, or something, through me.”

Youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. Most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of Howes (the solo project of Manchester-based John Howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride.

NZCA LINES return with new album Infinite Summer, released on 22nd January 2016. It will be the first release for their new label home Memphis Industries (Poli’s, Field Music, The Go! Team). The follow up to 2012’s well-received self-titled album, Infinite Summer sees main man Michael Lovett joined by Charlotte Hatherley (Bat For Lashes, Ash) and Sarah Jones (Hot Chip), to create a record that marries sci-fi futurism to personal intima-cies. Since NZCA Line’s debut record, Lovett has honed his skills in the studio with Christine & The Queens and touring as part of Metronomy’s live band. The record unfurls through brooding, sensual beats, dazzling synths and melancholic vocals that take you on a different journey on every track. Whilst “Infinite Summer” and “Do It Better” focus on the idea of an enlarged sun that would bring us joy and terror, there are glimmers of Michael’s personal life running throughout such as standout single “Two Hearts” dealing as it does with long distance connections maintained via satellites and fibre optic cables. Infinite Summer’s hyper melodicism sees NZCA Lines explore stellar new territories that position them as one of 2016 most enticing and rewarding prospects.

The album’s palette of otherworldy strings, distortion, clicks and synths acts as a bed for Menzies’ voice, calling to mind the emotive fragility of Arthur Russell, at times confessional, others loudly declamatory “ “Love Over Will” is unquestionably Menzie’s finest work to date.

PARA is Lord RAJA’s second full-length and the first that fully captures his vision for his music. “This is probably my most successful attempt at making a consistent work,” he says. “I was really conscious about making a record that wouldn’t alienate people.” Which doesn’t mean he cut back on experimentation. If anything, PARA is his most adventurous work to date. Every song makes use of RAJA’s Lexicon PCM 90 and an Eventide H3000 that he modified himself to get the effects he heard in his head. RAJA used these processors as instruments, creating customized reverb and textures to suit each song. “The title, PARA is an open-ended ‘For,’” RAJA explains. “It could be ‘For You,’ it could be ‘For’ something you’re doing. Ultimately, it’s for whatever you want it to be for.” PARA retains that flexibility and fluidity, while staying true to the person who made it. “I feel like I was very prepared to make this album,” RAJA says. “I wanted to include everyone, and say ‘This is my voice.’” On PARA, that voice comes through loud and clear.

Massenger’s killer new album Peeling Out on Burger Records. Recorded by Joel Jerome (Cherry Glazer, Peach Kelli Pop, Dios).

NO PARENTS are like a John Hughes movie starring the Menendez brothers: a cute comedy loaded with violence and splattered adults. For the layman who reads about punk rock in fashion mags, they’re the next FIDLAR are the new torchbearers of skate-punk. A Goofy analogies aside, No Parents are jokers with an ‘Sos hard-core edge” when singer Zoe Reign gets naked and sings, “I’m gonna kill my dad/Fuck my mom” while doing a half-serious robot dance, he looks like Baby Huey meets Darby Crash. No Parents’ debut album, May the Thirst Be With You, offers furiously funny, heavy U danceable pop-punk that’s loaded with enough dick jokes to garner comparisons to early all the hippie-bashing and because No Parents are 40 Dickies-esque songwriting, Blink-182. Which is why they’re LOL-ing their way to the main stage at festivals. Get used to ready for primetime.

Colder has just completed his third, very long-awaited album, Many Colours, and it’s abundantly clear from the opening strains of the title track that the lengthy absence since 2002 debut, Again, and 2005 successor, Heat, hasn’t diminished Marc Nguyen Tan’s keen sense of mood and melody. In fact, as the remainder of Many Colour’s 10 mesmerising tracks attest, if anything the nine-year respite has given Tan a renewed sense of purpose and direction that reveals itself with a subtle beauty that resonates and endures. This is a mature work made by an artist of rare purity and insight, a man who makes music for the right reasons, or not at all.

Liberation Technologies continues the legacy of its parent label Mute in working with innovative artists, and encouraging experimental and challenging perspectives.
