Duplication or Replication Duplication is used for small quantities, generally up to 1,000. It is also used for faster production in small to medium quantity product production. Duplication takes a blank disc and burns the content onto the disc. It is high speed produc-tion, but burns discs one at a time from the original file provided.

Replication is the process that starts from “scratch.” Discs are molded from plastic, layered with the materials needed and encrypted with the data. This is the

process used to make a few thousand or millions of discs.

MasterPieceDisc™ Thermal Process or Silk ScreenBoth processes achieve the end result of a brilliant 4 color disc face (often called “label”).

The preferable method of decoration depends on quantity.

MasterPieceDisc™ Thermal is the choice for small quantities. The price is more cost effective in quantities under 2,000. The process bonds a 4 color plastic film to the surface of the disc with heat

and pressure.

Silk Screen is the preferred method of decoration for replicated discs as the production line takes the disc from creation to completion on one line. Silk screen is a process of decorating the surface in ink.

Making as few as 50 or 100 CDs or DVDs from store boughtmaterials is not at all difficult. However, is it cost effective? Is it the quality and image you want? Probably not when you do the math or look at the completed product.

Ingredients needed to make a do-it-all-yourself copy of data records onto a CD.

A tally of costs: CDR .40 Adhesive label .25 Toner .40 (assuming 100% coverage ) Sub total 1.05 Labor .15 Waste .10 Total 1.30

The approximate yield of toners printing full color labels is 80-100 labels, a small yield for expensive toner.

Adhesive labels are a bit amateur. Professionals warn against the label as it drys in time and can leave dust on the laser that reads it. Add to the cost a special labeling device and the cost is even higher.

SLIMLINE JEWEL CASE (SLIMJB)Similar to the traditional jewel case, but two pieces make the case. Requires only a cover. Slim, lighter and less expensive than the three piece jewel.

USPS APPROVED MAILER (USPS-MLR)This white zip strip mailer is postal ser-vice approved to go through automatic canceling machines and “keep the disc safe”. Mails at regular first class rates.
