Dear Students and Parents,

As an engineering major at a Michigan University and a professional engineer working in Southeast Michigan, I often heard about the impact of DAPCEP Summer programs. Many reflected on the fact that a DAPCEP summer program was their first time away from home without their parents or the life-long friendships that were created. Others remember a critical moment when they decided to go to college and major in a technical field or the first time eating in a dorm cafeteria. Regardless the experience, DAPCEP summer programs are a significant opportunity in the lives of many.

We are extremely excited to provide this informational booklet filled with exciting educational opportunities. We have worked with our program partners to offer exciting opportunities for students to show their creativity while gaining exposure to the university environment. There are also several new programs for you to choose from.

Some words of advice: Do not wait until the last minute to register for these courses. DAPCEP Summer Programs are extremely popular and fill up quickly.

Read all of the information about a course. Not all classes are the same; additional information, essays or materials may be required to complete the program application. It is important that you understand all the information related to the summer program before applying. Please follow all instructions provided either in the program booklet or on the provider’s webpage.

Thank you for allowing us to share these opportunities with you. Our goal is to provide you with a fantastic educational experience that will create memories for a lifetime. Your participation in DAPCEP is an investment in the future.

Welcome to DAPCEP!

Sincerely,

Jason D. Lee, Executive Director

MISSIONThe mission of DAPCEP is to increase the number of historically underrepresented students who

aremotivated and prepared academically to pursue degrees leading to careers in Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related fields through K-12 supplemental

educational programming.

ADMISSIONS POLICY The DAPCEP admission is designed to maximize fairness and consideration of all eligible

applicants. Each Program Director or selection committee seeks to have a qualified, balanced, broad base of students, each of whom must meet the eligibility requirements for the desired

program. Typically, each program has more applicants than it has allotted spaces. While every consideration is given to maximize total enrollment with as many students as possible receiving

their first selection, the numerical realities of the program and its funding will result in some students not getting their desired program or not even admitted to DAPCEP at all.

We encourage all students who are not admitted to reapply during the next enrollment period.

MATH QUEST (PROGRAM FOR GIRLS ONLY) - 19400University of Michigan Ann Arbor

This three-day math experience will take students on an exciting journey into the world of mathematics! In a unique and fun context, students will learn six problem-solving strategies and how to apply them to real-life situations. The goal of the program is to introduce, reinforce, and solidify problem-solving skills as well as oral communication skills. In other words, students will learn to both think and speak mathematics! Working both independently and cooperatively, students will create and solve problems, then present oral explanations of these problems to their peers.

By the end of this guided math quest, students will understand that mathematical concepts are interrelated and that one problem might be solved by using more than one problem solving strategy. A key focus will be ensuring that student’s understand that the solution thought process is as important as getting the correct answer be-cause once the process is mastered, it can be applied to many other situations and problems. The real “learning’’ takes place when students begin using critical thinking to apply what they know to new problems that can arise from the everyday world, or from science, or from within mathematics itself! ** Transportation IS provided. Details will be provided in acceptance letter.**

PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) of DAPCEP (Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program) was formed by parents of DAPCEP students in May, 1980 as the Parent Ad Hoc

Committee. The purpose of this group has been and continues to be to support the programs and activities of DAPCEP and its students.

PAC has several subcommittees as well as an active teen component to their organization. The teens in grades 8th through 12th meet the same time as the parents. Their calendar of events is diverse and well received by the students and parents alike. The Teen Coordinators are working professionals from major industries throughout metropolitan Detroit. They are highly motivated

and keep the teens enthusiastically involved in activities throughout the PAC year.

The current membership fee is $10 per year per member. Teen membership is included with the parent membership. The Parent Advisory Committee of DAPCEP is a registered 501c3

organization in the state of Michigan.
