2 Weinstein JCC | 2015 Fall Activity Guide

Welcome

Dear Member,It is hard to believe that the fall season is upon us. This means the start of school, football, jacket and boots weather, as well as another great season of programming here at the Weinstein JCC.

Whether you are a subscriber to our incredible Patrons of the Arts services, have a child in our Early Childhood Program, workout in our Fitness Center or Group Exercise classes, take advantage of our terrific Aquatic facility or attend one of our amazing community events—our goal and vision for the upcoming season has not changed:

• Our vision – to continue to strive to offer the highest quality in programs and services• Our goal – to meet and/or exceed your expectations each and every time you visit the Weinstein JCC

In order to meet this vision and goal, we are requesting your help in the following manner:

• When surveyed or provided with a program evaluation, please take the time to fill it out in honest detail – we really do want to know!• Watch for our “Member Messages” bulletin boards, which will be located in key areas of the building. On these boards we will post responses to issues, questions, concerns and thoughts you may have.• Take an opportunity to fill out a “Star Card” for our staff when they do something special and exceed your expectations.

Please let us know when something just isn’t the way you feel it should be. We are here to listen to your thoughts and address any issue as it arises.

With us promising to work incredibly hard to meet the ever-changing needs of our community, and with your feedback and thoughts, we will continue to make the Weinstein JCC your “Center for Life.”

Please know how much we appreciate you being a member of our family!

Jay J. Jacobs, CEO

Classrooms Alive with Investigation, Collaboration and CreativityInspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach enhances the very heart of our programs, which provides an experience that shapes not only children’s knowledge and skill, but also their attitudes about learning and intellectual curiosity. This is a journey that the children and teachers take together, requiring the teachers to connect with their children’s interests and follow their lead as they explore the world around them indoors and outdoors.

An Ethical StartThe preschool program provides a unique curriculum for the teaching of ethics to young children. An Ethical Start™ is based on the text of Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, a tractate on the classic Jewish text on ethics. Through study of the text, teachers find ways to weave lessons on responsibility, dignity, kindness, community, tradition and respect throughout each child’s day.

Open CommunityEven though we follow Jewish tradition, families of all faiths and backgroundsare welcome in our preschool and community.

Parents Get InvolvedMembers of the Early Childhood Committee (ECC) are parents of preschoolers and help guide the school in making policy decisions and in planning special events. The Early Childhood Committee meets once a month in the evening. The Preschool’s Parent Group Association (PGA) is the organization responsible for early childhood fundraising and community service projects that raise funds to enhance facilities and programming. The PGA is comprised of parents of preschoolers and the Early Childhood Directors.

Jazz in the Sukkah!All Ages

Join us for the 3rd annual Jazz in the Sukkah with light refreshments, great music and fun! The holiday of Sukkot begins at sundown on September 27 and ends at sundown on October 4. It’s always better to celebrate together!

Sukkot, a Hebrew word meaning “booths” or “huts,” refers to the Jewish festival of giving thanks for the fall harvest. It also commemorates the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert after the giving of the Torah atop Mt. Sinai. Sukkot is marked by several distinct traditions. One, which takes the commandment to dwell in booths, literally, is to erect a sukkah, a small, temporary booth or hut. Sukkot (in this case, the plural of sukkah) are commonly used during the seven-day festival for eating, entertaining and even for sleeping.

Rosh HaShanahSeptember 13 - 15

Rosh HaShanah (literally, “Head of the Year”) is the Jewish New Year, which marks the beginning of a 10-day period of prayer, self-examination and repentance. This period, known as the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe or High Holy Days), is widely observed by Jews throughout the world, many with prayer and reflection in a synagogue. There also are several holiday rituals observed at home. Customs associated with the holiday include sounding the shofar, eating a round challah and tasting apples and honey to represent a sweet New Year.

Yom KippurSeptember 22 - 23 Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement” and refers to the annual Jewish observance of fasting, prayer and repentance. Part of the High Holidays, which also includes Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. In three separate passages in the Torah, the Jewish people are told, “the tenth day of the seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be a sacred occasion for you: You shall practice self-denial.”(Leviticus 23:27). Fasting is seen as fulfilling this biblical commandment. The Yom Kippur fast also enables us to put aside our physical desires to concentrate on our spiritual needs through prayer, repentance and self-improvement.

Yom Kippur is the moment in Jewish time when we dedicate our mind, body and soul to reconciliation with God, our fellow human beings and ourselves. We are commanded to turn to those whom we have wronged first, acknowledging our sins and the pain we might have caused.  At the same time, we must be willing to forgive and to let go of certain offenses and the feelings of resentment they provoked in us. On this journey we are both seekers and givers of pardon. Only then can we turn to God and ask for forgiveness:  “And for all these, God of forgiveness, forgive us, pardon us, and grant us atonement.”

SukkotSeptember 27 - October 4Sukkot, a Hebrew word meaning “booths” or “huts,” refers to the Jewish festival of giving thanks for the fall harvest.  It also commemorates the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert after the giving of the Torah atop Mt. Sinai. Sukkot is celebrated five days after Yom Kippur on the 15th of the month of Tishrei, and is marked by several distinct traditions. One, which takes the commandment to dwell in booths, literally is to erect a sukkah, a small, temporary booth or hut. Sukkot (in this case, the plural of sukkah) are commonly used during the seven-day festival for eating, entertaining and even for sleeping.

Simchat TorahOctober 4 - 5 Immediately following Sukkot, we celebrate Sh’mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, a fun-filled day during which we celebrate the completion of the annual reading of the Torah and affirm Torah as one of the pillars on which we build our lives. As part of the celebration, the Torah scrolls are taken from the ark and carried or danced around the synagogue seven times. During the Torah service, the concluding section of the fifth book of the Torah, D’varim (Deuteronomy), is read, and immediately following, the opening section of Genesis, or B’reishit as it is called in Hebrew, is read. This practice represents the cyclical nature of the relationship between the Jewish people and the reading of the Torah.

HanukkahDecember 6 - 14Hanukkah (alternately spelled Chanukah), meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, refers to the joyous eight-day celebration during which Jews commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over the armies of Syria in 165 B.C.E. and the subsequent liberation and “rededication” of the Temple in Jerusalem. The modern home celebration of Hanukkah centers around the lighting of the hanukkiyah, a special menorah for Hanukkah; foods prepared in oil including latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts); and special songs and games.

Jewish Holidays - Fall 2015 (5776)

Cultural Arts & Entertainment

Patrons of the Arts Kick-Off Event: Mentalist Eran RavenAges: 12+

You have seen him on TV, now see him live! There are no cameras, nothing is staged and nothing is preset…this is the real deal. In this highly interactive show, you can be part of the excitement and action. Have you ever wondered what the person next to you was thinking? Are they telling the truth or lying? Ever curious if someone can read your mind? Come see Eran Raven read body language, analyze facial expressions and use his psychological

techniques, such as subliminal suggestions and cognitive thinking, to predict and read people’s minds and influence their thoughts. Eran Raven will entertain you; he will leave you astounded, asking questions and wanting more. “When we saw Eran performing on TV we were impressed, but we dismissed it as ‘TV magic’, but when we saw him in person we were just floored and could not explain it.”

Jewish Family Theatre Presents: Damn YankeesAges: 10+

Based on the novel The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant by Douglass Wallop, Damn Yankees the Broadway mega-hit and winner of 7 TONY Awards including Best Musical hits it out of the park! The winning score by Adler and Ross and a devilish book by George Abbot have made this sporty musical comedy a true American classic.

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil, also known as Mr. Applegate, for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life he’s left behind. Joe ultimately outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self, and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.

Light, fast-paced and devilishly clever, Damn Yankees is a home-run hit featuring all-American subject matter and an irreverent sense of humor. The perfect choice for a high school’s spring musical or community theatre production, Damn Yankees is a wicked, romantic comedy that’s sure to please.
