PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES:PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES:

• Alert Coaches and Event Supervisors to significant changes in the 2015 Dynamic Planet Event Rules mandating the use of a timed-station-to-station format and the possible use of probe ware at stations.

• Provide a format for training students and running the 2015 Dynamic Planet Event

EVENT RULE CHANGESEVENT RULE CHANGES

• In Section 3 of ‘The Competition,’ it states:

‘Teams will be presented with one or more tasks, in a timed station-to-station format with the possible use of probe ware at stations.’

WORKSTATION FORMATWORKSTATION FORMAT

In a traditional workstation format:

• Teams are provided with all of the resources they need to complete the event at their assigned location.

• Students remain at the same location throughout the competition.

• Teams have the entire time period of the event to complete activities.

Page 6: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

STATION FORMATSTATION FORMAT

In a timed station-to station format:

• Teams may answer one or more questions at an assigned station

• Students may complete laboratory activities at the station

• Students have a set period of time to answer the questions or complete the activity and must move to the next station when prompted to do so.

Page 7: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

WHAT THIS MEANSWHAT THIS MEANS• Students will have less time to

answer what will likely be the same number of questions in a typical competition

• Students must process information and complete tasks more quickly

• Supervisors will not have to provide event resources to all teams as all teams will use a common set of resources

• Events will be less likely to include essay/extended response questions

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMAT

A large room with long laboratory tables is ideal

Any large room can be furnished with long tables if a dedicated lab is not available.

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMAT

For training purposes, you can initially start with a minimum number of stations as you introduce event concepts

Prior to competition, students should be able to complete a full set of station activities.

Page 11: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMATStations should be designed in an ordered format with arrows used to indicate the direction of movement.

STATION 1 STATION 2 STATION 3

STATION 4STATION 5

Students at Station 1 move to Station 2/ Students at Station 3 move to Station 3, etc.

Students who begin at Station 5 will proceed to Station 1

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMAT

To start, place just one question at each station. See how long it takes students to answer the question.

STATION 1

Page 13: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

Next, allot students 1 minute to complete the question at each station. Then have them move to the next station.

Next, increase the number of questions at each station to two and give them two minutes to complete both questions.

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMAT

By the time your Regional Tournament is scheduled, your students should be able to complete at least 65 questions in 16 stations with four or more questions each.

Page 19: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMAT

Using this format of 16 stations that each include 4 or more questions, you may also want to schedule a Rest Area as a 17th station where there are no questions.

This provides students with the opportunity to briefly review their answers and to rest after completing a rigorous round of event questions/activities.

DESIGNING A STATION-TO-STATION FORMAT

You should also schedule hands-on activities that may be completed within the three minute period at each station. You may wish to adjust the number of questions associated with the activity to fit within the three-minute time limit.

USING 3-D MODELING OF FEATURES

Hands on activities used in the 2015 Dynamic Planet competition may include the use of 3-D models to represent geologic features associated with ocean basins including:

The use of illustrated paper cutouts or clay models is recommended

You can make your own drawings using a boxtop template and an Earth Science textbook from which you copy the illustration to the box.

USING 3-D MODELING OF FEATURES

Geoblox models are well illustrated and include many of the ocean basin features students will need to know.

Page 24: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

You can also make clay models of ocean basin features..

USING PROBE WARE

The 2015 Dynamic Planet Event Rules also indicate that questions requiring the use of probe ware may be used at event stations

Page 27: 2015 Dynamic Planet Significant Event Rule Changes

USING PROBE WARE

The use of probes with graphing calculators such as the TI-84 and TI-Nspire and probe interfaces allow students to collect and interpret a variety of data related to the study of oceanography.

USING PROBE WARE

My whitepaper TI/Vernier Probe Sample Question Topics reviews possible topics for probeware questions that may be used in the Dynamic Planet competition.
