The Changing Role of Human Services to Support Rural Healthcare: A Holistic Approach

Suggested Attendees:All Nonprofit Professionals; Volunteers; Board Members; Funders; and Organizations Engaged in

Medicaid Reform/DSRIP projects or Community Collaborations

The final portion of the plenary session will consist of interactive table discussions that will engage conference attendees in reviewing & analyzing rural health & human services case studies - providing a great opportunity for networking, sharing resources, and initiating creative problem solving. All discussions will culminate with action items, as well as applicable methods of integration and implementation surrounding preparation for DSRIP & the Medicaid Reform.

Human services play a vital role in ensuring that rural individuals, families, and communities have the resources to support their health. Through a range of critical programs and services, including the availability of affordable housing, transportation, income supports, food assistance, and job training, rural residents have access to provisions that ultimately allow for better health. When health challenges arise, individuals who have their basic needs met are more able to direct their resources and energy toward recovery and preventative steps to avoid future challenges.

In order to control healthcare costs and attain a more efficient and effective healthcare system, it is imperative that social determinants of health be addressed. By doing so through the provision of human services, rural communities have the opportunity to identify unaddressed needs, leverage limited resources, and collaborate for change.

In this interactive session, local nonprofit leaders will share their experiences with the implementation of a range of capacity building topics. Providing an introduction and strategic overview of the role that these best practices have played at their individual organizations, the panelists will touch on the integration process, the anticipated and unexpected challenges, and the impact at all levels throughout the agency.

Through depicting how these capacity building concepts were integrated within local organizations, conference attendees will takeaway applicable strategies and tactics. Following the panel, subject matter experts will moderate a round-table forum, allowing for further discussion of best practices, networking with regional nonprofit professionals, and sharing of ideas.

It will also assist with recognizing the strengths and limitations of each style that will enhance protectivity and communication in the workplace. This workshop will give leaders the ablity to create an environment for success, and employees to follow. Attendees will gain an understanding of three keys to being a more effective leader, with take aways including tools for implementing effective leadership within their own teams.

A panel of three presenters will represent different aspects of the Garden of Fire summer program collaborative: a funder, a youth agency, and an arts organization. A brief outline of the Garden of Fire collaboration with be provided, followed by a short video. Learning objectives covered will include tools for collaboration, creative community building, and examples of quality programming. Attendees will take away various tools, such as a collaborative model for working with schools, youth centers, program-providing agencies, and funders; and a knowledge of implementing advocacy within their own work and nonprofit organizations.

Learning How to Advocate for Change in Rural CommunitiesDr. Mary E. Daly

Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) Program Director, Mansfield University

In this presentation, panelists from the Mansfield University Social Work program will share advocacy techniques and ways to identify, address, and inspire change surrounding common problems in rural communities, including poverty, drug use, transportation issues, obesity, and elder abuse. Advocacy to influence positive community change will be discussed, as well as specific techniques, including lobbying, presenting, writing, meetings, and social media. Leadership opportunities for young human service workers in rural areas will also be explored.

Access & Awareness of Verified Resources for Your Clients: Building a Relationship to Find Help

How can you ensure that the individuals you serve have access to and an awareness of the resources available throughout the community? What can you do to inspire your clients to help themselves? Providing consumers of your program with the help they need is not only critical to their overall success, but is also a rewarding experience as a human services provider. However, when primary needs are not met, frustration, hostility, and a lack of trust may arise.

Taking advantage of the many utilizations of 2-1-1 HELPLINE is a key factor in the success of clients - as well as in fulfilling your organization’s mission. From referring consumers to find help to implementing a knowledge of 2-1-1 within your orientation process and taking advantage of the information available for successful collaborations, the value of this community resource is in the universal opportunity for individual and community impact.

This workshop will include a brief introduction to the options available for seeking information, including online access to the database, the convenience & ease of connecting with the contact center, volunteer management software, and specialized, customizable directories. Attendees will take away an understanding of the extensive information & referral services of 2-1-1 HELPLINE, in addition to the assurance of meaningful, guided connections for anyone to find help.

Additional Information

A healthy breakfast buffet will be offered along with beverage service during conference breaks. Lunch will be on your own. You will have time to frequent the many restaurants and shops on beautiful Market Street in Corning’s Gaffer District. Please note that we are unable to accommodate any dietary restrictions during the breakfast buffet.

ParkingThere are several public and private parking lots and garages in the area. We encourage carpooling. The City of Corning conducts frequent and thorough checks of parking areas.
