Counterfeit product in the market place is a major concern for the brand owners. It is not the revenue loss though big in
number is important but the damage it brings to the brand itself. It’s the experience of the consumer with the fake prod-
uct to impact the brand image. In the session I would like to have an interactive session to share the experiences of the
brand owners how did they counter the issue? How effective are Overt & Covert marking on the products to tackle the
issue. The options available for the markings. Management of supply chain for counterfeit products.
How to handle counterfeit issues in the market-Zubair Hasnain UNILEVER GLOBAL HQ

protect IP and create a point of difference
Biocontrol packaging using bacteriophages can control the growth of pathogens in food, such as readytoeat meat,
cantaloupe and sprouts. Immobilized bacteriophages, viruses that kill specific bacteria butare harmless to humans, kill
their target bacteria by reproducing inside them. They do not affect colour, flavour, texture or taste. Other technologies,
where the phages are sprayed on food in the production line, are in development or on the market. In Sentinel’s
approach, the phages are immobilized in the paper that separates slices of cold cuts, cheese or similar foods. This uses
less phages, and releases them only when the target pathogen is present to avoid overuse. Various immobilization
techniques to maintain phage activity were investigated on commercially available paper. The phages were active and
able to capture and kill pathogenic bacteria in a variety of packaging technologies, and they also extended shelf life.
Brands need tools and technologies to: Protect against counterfeit and Detect the incidence of counterfeit. Historically,
many measures used in packaging have been designed to be OVERT, to give consumers confidence – largely based on
the principle of “we use holograms – so who’d be bothered making a fake one”. So in 2015 and onwards, Brands need to
re-think their packaging strategies, making packaging more intelligent and using technologies that are at least invisible
and ideally unable to be copied by counterfeiters.
Enhanced ID BarcodesPresent Bar code usage on packaging in commerce / Benefits and Limitations / Comparison of 1D
and 2D symbologies / Present Point of Sale scanning capabilities / Bridging the present POS scanning 1D capabilities and
the emerging 2D imagers coming online / Linking 1D and 2D bar codes / Linking 1D and other 1D bar codes / Encryption
of either / or both of those symbologies / Using the same technology to link Brands and Consumers / Smartphone appli-
