2015 –2016 Resource Management Annual Report Executive Summary

Prescribed Burning and Wildfires

• FPS burned 71,282 acres – 5,055 acres fewer than the previous fiscal year – 3,379 acres more than the division’s minimum target and 76% of the acres planned, third best year on record

• The number of fire-type acres in rotation (not backlogged) increased by 1.21% • FPS conducted 455 prescribed burns, 69 more than the previous year, the most burns ever conducted in a Fiscal Year • Nineteen wildfires accounted for 1,114 acres (1.59%) of the total acres burned • Of 89 parks with acres planned for prescribed fire, 82 conducted at least one prescribed burn • Forty-four parks exceeded the minimum ecological target, eight more than the previous year • Districts One and Five achieved 100% of their planned goals

Mechanical Treatment

• In Fiscal Year 2015-16, 1,270 acres of timber were harvested at 5 State Parks including Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, Rock Springs Run State Reserve, San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park, St. Marks River Preserve State Park, and Torreya State Park

• Five thousand three hundred twenty-one acres were mechanically treated in 35 parks for habitat improvement or fuel reduction Exotic Plant Removal

• FPS treated a total of 9,329 acres for exotic plants in the 2015-2016 Fiscal Year, a 19% decrease from the previous year • According to the Natural Resource Tracking System (NRTS) Survey Trends Report, the total infested acres increased Division-

wide by 7,070 acres from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. As surveys of infestations are updated, future reports should show a significant decrease in the number of infested acres as a result of the investment the Division has made in exotic plant control during the fiscal year

• Thirty-two project submittals were approved for funding through FWC’s Upland Invasive Plant Management Program.

Notes About This Graph1981: FPS began systematically tracking fire program accomplishments2005: Fire-type acres under management increased with the addition Office of Coastal and Aquatic Managed Areas properties 2005: Apparent increase in "Acres Planned" resulted from re-defining the plan to reflect ecological need rather than the operational plans 2007: Number of fire-type acres dropped significantly with the transfer of Tosohatchee State Reserve to FWC2009: Began tracking fire management accomplishments with new, more accurate database; resumed tracking operational plans rather than ecological objective2014: Greenways and Trails data were incorporated into the fire database adding nearly 30,000 acres of fire-type community.

Fiscal Year 2015-2016The graph below shows the number of acres each district burned compared to the number planned and the minimum target. Acres burned are from both wildfire and prescribed fire. Minimum target represents the number of acres that must be burned to prevent additional backlog from accumulating and maintain

appropriate inter-fire intervals for each fire-type community.

Fiscal Year 2015-2016

FPS began tracking mechanical treatment acres in fiscal year 2003 to document efforts to improve fire-type habitats. The figures below represent the number of fire-type acres mechanically treated (mowing, roller-chopping, etc.) for fuel hazard

reduction prior to conducting prescribed burns. These figures do not include fireline construction or maintenance; mechanical exotic plant removal or timber harvests.
