Message from the School Director

Brother Supanun KhantapreechaSchool Director ofMontfort College Primary Section

May God bless you all,

Welcome to the academic year 2015! This year we start with new enthusiasm and full of hope in a challenging year ahead.

Despite the seemingly adverse situations reported in the media, we go on with high hopes heading toward the right direction of our

mission.

If you have been following the issues related to the future of the youth and the nation, a recent study on educational problems in

Thailand reported that the birth rate decreased and noted a significant increase rate of children born from unprepared adolescents;

in the same way elderly population has increased while the working age group has decreased.

It is predicted that this rate of birth and death in Thailand will be stable until the year 2022, by then the projected population will

be around 65 million. If these studies are precise, it means that by the next 20 years the children now will be in the working age in

an aging society and must work with foreign workers as the new generation that follows continues to decrease.

Meanwhile, the Thai social problems such as consumerism, hedonism, economic overspending of a capitalist society and

corruption still exist and influence the life of the society. These existing problems seem to appear as normal and acceptable such

as gaining power and authority from illegal business, drug abuse, natural disasters, health and diseases problems, etc. and as an

educational institution, we can’t be indifferent to such an urgent situation regarding the future generations.

The need to accelerate efforts is very urgent; this includes upgrading the curriculum design, professional development of educators

and staff as well as other components that are integral to the development and education of the children of this present generation.

They need to be equipped with necessary skills that allow them to face the future and have leadership skills to contribute to the

common good.

However, there are pre-requisites to success that can’t be taken for granted- the family; the importance of the family as basic

foundation of every child’s development in partnership with the school. It’s like having two families jointly investing and seeking for

ways and means in a sincere and dedicated way to give hope and security. As a private institution, we ensure that in the future,

children will be ready to face the global world with strong leadership and social skills; a contributor towards the growth of all

dimensions of the society based on the educational goals founded in the Spirituality of Saint Louis Marie de Montfort. My wish and

prayers that may God help and guide us in this ardent endeavor of forming and molding the youth into a global citizen of the future.

Hi, my name is Patrick Nadeau. I’m from Canada. I grew up in Ottawa, the capital city. When I was 15, my high school math teacher saw that I was good at math and so gave me a book to read about a very old and very difficult math problem (Fermat’s Last Theorem) that had just recently been solved. I decided then that I wanted to be a mathematician. I studied math at Carleton University, in Ottawa. I worked very hard and eventually completed my bachelor’s. In my mid-twenties, I became more curious about other things. I realized that I knew a great deal about math and almost nothing about the world around me. So I decided to explore. I took a few small trips in Central America. That gave me the courage to take bigger trips. I forwent a master’s program in mathematics and headed to New Zealand. Along my travels, I heard many great things about Thailand. So after some time, I came here. I fell in love with the country and met a wonderful girl who has since become my wife. We’ve been in Chiang Mai for about a year and a half now.

My name is Diego. I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. My family moved to the United States of America when I was two months old. I grew up in Northern California and attended school there from pre-school to university. I come from a big family; a family of eight, with 1 brother and 4 sisters. I also have 14 nieces and nephews. I have been around children my whole life. I enjoy playing and working with children. Before moving to Thailand this year, I lived and taught English in Japan for 8 years. I worked around the Tokyo area. I worked at public primary and secondary schools. I also taught English at special needs schools, including schools for the deaf and handicapped children. I earned a Bachelor Degree of Science in Recreation with an emphasis on environmental studies. I love the outdoors and enjoy activities such as hiking, fishing, snowshoeing, swimming and snorkeling. My hobbies are traveling and photography. I have visited over 20 countries, including 16 countries in Asia. I can speak 3 languages, including English, Spanish and Japanese. (I hope that I can learn Thai as my 4th language). I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings here in Chiang Mai. Montfort College Primary School, like Chiang Mai City, also has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I hope that I can contribute my experience and efforts in teaching here at Montfort College Primary Section and help the students learn and enjoy English.

My name is Ragnar Miljeteig and I am from Norway. I was born and grew up in the city of Bergen, on the western coast of Norway. Even though it is the second biggest city in Norway, it is a relatively small and quiet city with only a few hundred thousand inhabitants. I enjoyed hiking, reading and playing video games when I lived in Norway. I am the middle son, and have a younger sister and an older brother. In University I studied Japanese as my major and I exchanged to Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto for a year, to further improve my Japanese skills. It was only a year, but it was the most interesting year of my life that far, and I learned a lot about different cultures, people and the world in general. After I came back to Norway and graduated from my major of Japanese in 2012. Even after getting a job as a Japanese teacher I still felt like I wanted to go back out into the world and explore another country and culture. That lead me to Thailand in March 2014, and I went to Chiang Mai in April. After falling in love with the food, culture and beautiful surroundings, I eventually decided to stay and became an English Teacher at Monfort College Primary section. I really enjoy teaching and interacting with the students, and in my free time, explore some of the many sights in and around Chiang Mai.

My name is Tyler Humphreys and I am from the USA. I was born in Florida but I mostly grew up living in Atlanta, Georgia and Seattle, Washington. I also spent a couple years of my childhood in New Delhi, India. My experiences living in India and travelling to other countries from India at a young age instilled in me a desire to work and live overseas later on in life. I enjoy playing football, hiking, biking, reading books, playing video games, and travelling. I love to travel and explore new places as well as try to get insight into other cultures and ways of life in the process. I try to explore as much of Thailand as I can on the weekends and on breaks and holidays. I received my bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Georgia in 2012. After graduating, I traveled all over the US and worked a few different jobs until I settled into a job refurbishing and constructing national and state park facilities in the state of Washington. During my time there, I got to work with children volunteers and I enjoyed it a great deal. With my pre-existing aspiration to live and work in a foreign country, I did some research and decided to teach English in Thailand to

continue working with kids and immerse myself in a different culture. I arrived in Chiang Mai in April of 2014 and completed an intensive TEFL internship course with SEE TEFL. The course put me through the paces quite swiftly with lots of hands-on practice. I ended up working at a school just outside of Chiang Mai in San Sai where I had 700 students ranging all the way from Anuban 1 to Matthayom 3. I learned a great deal about not just teaching, but also Thai culture in my time working there. Last October, I joined Montfort as the EP3 teacher. I think that the students, facilities, and staff at Montfort are exceptional. Chiang Mai is a wonderful place to live and I am thankful for every day that I have here.

I’m Lan Yifei, 20 years old. I’m from Chengdu, Sichuan. I major in Education in Chengdu University. For me, I do really want to know and experience the cultural differences between Chinese and Thai, and even between the mode of teaching and school management. At last, I hope I’ll have an unforgettable memory in MCP with my teachers and students.

My name is Xiong Xiaohan, I am from Chengdu, China. I am a student in third year of Chengdu University. When I first time came to Montfort College Primary Section the beautiful environment impressed me deeply, and the teachers and students are very enthusiastic and lovely. There are three reasons that pushed me to come here. First, I want to broaden my horizon and enrich my experience. Second, I want to exchange Chinese cultures with Thai. I hope my internship life in Thailand will be happy, and I wish to make friends with teachers and students in MCP for I like this school very much.

I’m He Yanyi, 20 years old. I major in English Education in Chengdu University. Hello everyone! My name is Hang Ju. I come from Yunnan, China. You can call me Sunny. I like reading, watching movies and travelling. I was very excited when I knew that I would come to Chiang Mai. I hope I can see another side of me in here. I come here to teach Chinese. I fall in love with Montfort College Primary when I first saw it. MCP is very delicate. All the teachers are friendly and the students are lovely. I quite love them. If I have a chance, I’d come here again.

Hello, everyone! My name is Li Yueshu, a teacher from China. It’s my honor to come to Montfort College for internship. I feel the exotic amorous feelings. The people here are as warm as the weather of Chiang Mai, and Tai students are very lovely. I do really enjoy the life here.

Hello! I’m Camille. I am from Chengdu University. My Chinese name is Huang Xiaoting and I teach Chinese here. When I arrived at the school-MCP I was attracted by the beautiful scenery--the trees, flowers and the church. I remembered the first day, when I was in the classroom the students were surprised. They are very cute. I want to try new things, see the different world, experience different cultures and furthermore, to improve my English. So I came to Montfort with my dream.

My name is Zhou Jiaji, you also can call me Shay. I come from Chengdu, China. I’m a college student from Chengdu University. I come to MCP for internship. I come here to practice my teaching skills and broaden my horizon. If I can make some new friends here, I will be much happier. I think the school is so diversified and international. There are many foreign teachers and students are very cute but a little bit naughty, and they respect their teachers very much.

I come from Chengdu, China, a junior student of Chengdu University. My English name is Sky, and my Chinese name is Zhou Qia nkun. My major is primary school education, and I study Chinese language mainly. In order to learn more and expand horizons, I come to Montfort for a 3-months internship with my partners. Of course, we are also responsible for the dissemination of the Chinese cultures. My first impression of the school should be noble and sacred. The school is clean and tidy though the number of students is indeed a lot. The students are very lovely, the teachers are very kind. I believe I’ll have a good time in Montfort.

MCP and Chengdu University made an agreement to collaborate together and signed MOU for the students to teach Chinese language as part of the requirement of teacher internship. The School Director of Montfort Primary School personally welcomed the student teachers from the University of Chengdu, China at the International Airport, Chiang Mai on May 28, 2015. Welcome to MCP!

Hello. I am Miku Matsuzaki. I’m from Tokyo, Japan. I arrived here in Thailand last 22nd April 2015. In fact, three years ago, I had been here in Montfort for six months as an internship student. Then I graduated from university last March and moved to Chiang Mai. I am honored to have the opportunity to be a teacher in Montfort. I really appreciate it. Thanks all teachers, students and parents in MCP and the Thai people, I am able to spend time while feeling like every day is a special day. I take part in P.6 Science and Mathematics class to give lessons that include STEM education. ‘STEM’ stands for S: Science, T: Technology, E: Engineering and M: Mathematics. These are the necessary things for our daily life. STEM is the one way of learning for the way of thinking and solving the problem. As teaching methods, it adopts the learning activity through making for a method of subject understanding. We use LEGO blocks for

making. LEGO blocks are hard to break and easy to rebuild, so it is suitable for student’s use. The purpose of STEM education is helping people learn and gain a deeper understanding through making by themselves. In addition, there are 2 extra classes: One is weekday after school class and another one is Saturday afternoon class. On weekdays, there are 2 courses in this class: Animation course (every Tuesday and Thursday) and Robot Programming course (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday). On Saturdays, there is Robot Soccer course. There are 28 students attending these classes. In Animation course, students make original animations as they learn about mechanism of animations and human eyes. In Robot Programming course, students learn about how to write programming as they make popularized things like self-introduction and musical instruments. In Robot Soccer course, students challenge to make each soccer robot that can play soccer like human. Besides that, I join Japanese activity class every Wednesday. There are about 25 P.4-P.6 students attending this activity and learn Japanese pleasantly. They already learnt simple Japanese greetings and how to introduce themselves. They are learning how to write Hiragana (Japanese letter) too. They are studious and also challenging. I can watch them practice speaking Japanese with their friends in the class and they seem to enjoy it. I am glad that they talk to me using Japanese words which they remember when I meet them at school.

We know that many students do not like Mathematics. That is why I try to improve their attitude towards the subject by using different methods in my teaching. For example: when students in Grade 4 are learning about Tessellation. (A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps). I encourage them to create their own Tessellation. I found that they were happy doing this and appreciated their own work. It is my opinion that when students are allowed to use their own ideas, then, as long as they follow the rules, they can do well. These are some of my students’ work in creating their own Tessellation in a classroom atmosphere.

On the 27th and 28th June, 2015 a meeting between parents and the school was held at the Empress Grand Hall of the Empress International Convention Center of Chiang Mai. On Saturday, grade 1- 3 parents attended the meeting and on Sunday grade 4-6 parents came. It’s the day when both parents and the school have a dialogue. The school explains to the parents about its mission and the philosophy of how the school is run. It is the time when parents become aware of the policies and procedures adopted by the school. Parents become collaborators in the goal of providing and achieving quality education and more so become active participants in the school’s educational development. 1. Believe “I believe in you. You are going to be successful someday. You’re going to make it! If you apply what I see in

you, there is nothing holding you back!”

To believe in another is to see what cannot be seen just

yet. It requires focusing on all that is going well and right, even

though there will be conflicts, bad moods, ornery behaviors,

and consequences for poor choices. …We create

experiences, “forced successes,” that give the student an

opportunity to feel capable. By this time of year, we know our

students well. So we begin to give a few more acceptable

choices that are aligned to our standards and topics. “I

believe in you”!

2. Purpose “You have a purpose. I see it and feel it! Let’s

have fun and discover what it is. A purpose might change,

and that’s a good thing, but it’s there!”

How do we help a student find his or her purpose? We

begin with an affirmation: “You have a purpose!” We listen

for interests and signs. We respect the off days and the off

hours, and we try again. We share stories of others who lost

a bit of hope and purpose, but tried again and again. J.K.

Rowling, Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, and Walt Disney are just

a few well-known individuals that defined purpose through

their mistakes and failures. We talk about the gift of failing

and how we can choose to respond and learn from those

moments of illusory despair. We make a plan inviting the

student to serve another. Maybe she targets another student

who is struggling, becoming a secret inspirer for a week and

when we serve another, our own emotional circuitry changes.

As we proceed with transparency, self-awareness, and

persistence, our perspectives broaden, raising positive emotion

while enhancing our own feelings of purpose and well-

being.

3. Question Me Listen for this unspoken request from

students:

Ask me how I am. Ask me what I need. Ask me my

thoughts and feelings. Ask me what my opinions are, even if

my response is ridiculous because I don’t want to stand out

in front of my peers! Ask me in private -- always in private.

Ask me to teach you anything about my world, my culture,

music I love, my beliefs, and my story. I may not say a word,

and it may take the entire school year for me to respond

to your questions, but I hear you. I hear your interest and

your compassionate concern for what I like, what I need,

and what plans I would like to create.

3 ThingsStudents Desire To Hear From Teachers

I have surveyed the students and teachers with these questions in mind: What does your teacher say to you that

feel encouraging or motivating? What do you want to hear from your teacher about your performance or

disposition in school?

From a variety of educators and students, four elementary and middle schools, along with undergraduates, the

answers to these questions have affirmed how very significant social acceptance and feelings are inside of schools.

Selected Quotes from Pope Francis’ Encyclical letter, “Laudato Si’,on the Care of Our Common Home” - VATICAN CITY (CNS)

Environment& Religion

The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. (n. 21) Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right. (n. 33) We are not God. (n. 67) The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God. (n. 84) It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. (n. 91) Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion. (n. 120) Leaving an inhabitable planet to future generations is, first and foremost, up to us. (n. 160) We know that technology based on the use of highly polluting fossil fuels - especially coal, but also oil and, to a lesser degree, gas - needs to be progressively replaced without delay. (n. 165) Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change. (n. 202) “Less is more.” A constant flood of new consumer goods can baffle the heart and prevent us from cherishing each thing and each moment. (n. 222) In reality, those who enjoy more and live better each moment are those who have given up (grazing) here and there, always on the lookout for what they do not have. (n. 223)

Every year a Wai Khru Ceremony is held. It is a day of honoring teachers in a beautiful moving ceremony where students pay respect to teachers. They are doing this to thank their teachers for teaching them but also in order to gain merit and good fortune for the future. This is considered an auspicious day for such a ceremony. At our school, the ceemony was held on Thursday- 11th June 2015 at the GREEN DOME. The 2nd Thursday of June had been designated as the Wai Khru Day. In unison with all other schools in the whole Kingdom of Thailand, this beautiful ceremony to honor teachers and benefactors for what they stand for and to express gratitude to what they had been to those who were under their tutelage. The songs and the significance of symbols used all conveyed deep meaning of the essence of being a teacher. As the students presented the flower, the teacher in returns gives a wish, and a blessing. The School Director, Brother Supanun Khantapreecha then recognized teachers by giving them award. Teachers and educational staff who had been in the school for a period of 15, 20 and 25 years of dedicated service were rewarded with a golden ring. There are those who had never been absent in school, always on time and never asked for a day of leave, they too received a reward. They were honored and thanked for their good example and being role models for those who joined in this year. The ceremony was followed with a very important ritual that should not be overlooked, it is the “Release of the fish into the Mae Ping River”. It was presided by the School Director and the Vice Director for the Academic Affairs. In the Buddhist tradition, it’s a way of making merit to the ancestors as well as past and present teachers, the fish were released back into its natural habitat, the water to free them from captivity by men. The aim is also to invoke the prosperity of learning throughout the school year 2015!
