This is Chowan Univers ity
Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven
Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Meet the 2014 CU Women’s Soccer Team
Amy Bell enters her fourth season as a member of the
Chowan University Athletics Department, and third season
as head coach of the women's soccer team. The team finished
the 2013 season with a 1-17 record. The Hawks earned a 2-1
win over William Peace University on October 11th when
Sami Persginger’s goal with 21 seconds on the clock lifted
Chowan past the Pacers.
The 2012 squad turned in a 2-16 overall record, with victo-
ries against Washington Adventist University and Lincoln
University (PA). Bell continues to build the program and
will look to a seven member senior class to lead the Hawks
to additional victories during the 2013-14 season.
Prior to coaching at Chowan, Bell spent two and a half sea-
sons as a graduate assistant soccer coach at Wheeling Jesuit
University. In 2010, she helped guide the Lady Cardinals to
a 10-10 overall record and 6-4 WVIAC record. Bell also
coached FC Wheeling United, a U19 Girls Club team in
Wheeling, WV for three seasons.
Bell is a graduate of Shepherd University (WV), where she
was a four year starter for the Rams. As a goalkeeper, Bell
was a four-time All-Conference Team member, two-year team captain, and two-year team MVP. Bell is a native of
Colorado.

ASSISTANT COACH EMILY KARPINSKI
Emily Karpinski enters her first season with the women’s
soccer and lacrosse teams. Amy Bell, Head Women’s Soccer
Coach noted, “I am very excited to have Emily as a member
of our staff. She will be a valuable asset to our midfield and
forwards. She has experience as a midfield player and came
to us highly recommended from her previous coaching
staff.”
She graduated from Elmira College in June 2014 with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Adolescent Education and
Social Studies. Karpinski served as a student teacher at
Elmira Free Academy for three months during her senior
year where she established classroom management plans,
created a student centered learning environment and de-
signed lesson plans for sophomore and juniors. Addition-
ally, she assessed student progress and utilized data on stu-
dent performance to ensure learning while fostering coopera-
tive relationships.
Karpinski also had a student teaching opportunity at Ernie
Davis Middle School. There, she worked with eighth grade
students in the subject area of social studies. She also modi-
fied lesson plans for students with disabilities and those that
required academic accommodations. Karpinski also held a
three month student teaching position at Riverside Elemen-
tary in 2011.
At Elmira, she competed as a student-athlete on the
women’s soccer team for four years while serving as a team
captain and earning Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team
honors on two occasions. Karpinski started and played in
every game during her four year career with the Soaring
Eagles. She was an active part of the campus community
and served as a sports medicine student assistant, an orien-
tation leader, judicial board representative and member of
TEACH (Teaching Education A Cut Higher). Karpinski
earned a Founder Scholarship, was named to the Dean’s List,
and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi over the course of her
academic career.
The Freehold, New Jersey native resides in Murfreesboro.
