There promises to be a lot of change for the Southern Utah University Soccer program this fall as the Thunderbirds prepare to enter their premier season in the Big Sky Conference under new head coach Becky Hogan. The 2012 schedule will be highlighted by in-state matchups with the University of Utah, Weber State and a home contest against Utah Valley on Sept. 8.

The Thunderbirds are set to face an exciting slate of games that will include visits from Big Sky Tournament winner Montana and regular season co-champion Portland State this October.

“The Big Sky is full of parity, on any day any team could win so you don’t ever get a day off,”explainsHogan.“It’saleaguewithahigherleveloftechnicalofplayers, alotofgood coaches and very good soccer.”

Hogan will bring a new style of play and look to utilize the talent on her roster in newandinnovativewaysinordertohelpSUUbeacontenderinitsfirstseasonofcompetition in the Big Sky.

“We are going to be a lot more attack oriented,” commented Hogan. “Fans can expect to see a dynamic style of play with transitions in and out of different formations.”

Another new wrinkle that Thunderbird fans will see on the pitch this season is the transitionofseniorRachelKrenzerasshemovesupfromthebacklinetothemidfielderposition where she will be looked upon to orchestrate the Thunderbird offense.

“Ibelieveit’stheroleofthecoachtobringafreshperspective and evaluate the players abilities to try and identify the best way that they can help the team,” explains Hogan. “Rachel has the look of the consummatemidfielder.ShemakesunbalancingrunsthatcreateopportunitiesforouroffenseandIpredict that she will do a lot at that position.”

The fresh look of the Thunderbird soccer program willalsobereflectedontherosterwhere11newcomers are set to join the club. A solid lineup of returners, including six senior players, will help to offset some of the inexperience of the squad and bring veteran leadership to the group. Anchoring

A new era in the Big Sky Conference begins in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic competition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics.

The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institutions and 13 football members. The current lineup includes four of thesixchartermembers:IdahoStateUniversity,TheUniversity of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State. Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in theBigSky,givingtheconferencefivememberswithatleast 40 years of continuous membership.

Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State University and Sacramento State in 1996. The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado.

The league has become one of the strongest DivisionIconferencesintheWestandisanationalleader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Sixtimes,BigSkyteamshavewontheDivisionINational Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past four seasons.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 bysixchartermembers–Idaho,IdahoState,Gonzaga,Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and

Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put theBigSkybackateightteams.In1996BoiseStateandIdaholeftandatthesametimetheconferenceadded Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge.TheBigSkymaintainednineteamsforfiveyears before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001.The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the PacificOceantotheRedRiverValleyofNorthDakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky MountainswithinstitutionsinMontana,Idaho,Utah,Arizona and Colorado.

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. WhileonatrackandfieldtripfromPocatello,Idaho,toMissoula,Mont.,legendaryDubbyHoltofIdahoStatesaw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor andoutdoortrackandfield, basketballandtennis.Inaddition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball championship forthefirsttime.

In1988-89,theBigSkyConferencefirstbegansponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women.

DougFullerton, thefifthcommissioneroftheBig Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77.ThefirstleaguecommissionerwasJackFriel,whoserved from 1963-71.

KEN BEAZER ON SUU ATHLETICS:

SouthernUtahUniversityistrulyaplacewhereacademicscomefirst.Thestrong academic commitment of the staff and coaches is manifest in the overall academic accomplishments our teams achieve on an annual basis. The University’s strong academic emphasis, coupled with the dedicated efforts of the student athletes, allows the Athletics Department to continu-ally post high marks in the classroom.

The academic climate offered at SUU enables the institution to attract and retain high quality student athletes with sound character and a clear un-derstanding of personal responsibility. Thunderbird Athletics was recently rewarded by its fellow institutions with an unprecedented, fourth con-secutive Mid-Continent Conference Sportsmanship Award, setting a new standard by which all institutions are now measured.

Southern Utah is fortunate to have a great relationship with the com-munity, bringing new meaning to the term, “campus community.” Cedar City residents are hospitable, friendly and eager to serve, creating an ideal setting for personal growth. Thunderbird student athletes readily accept their responsibility of role models and spent countless hours in the local schools mentoring children.

SouthernUtahUniversity’scommitmenttoathleticsismanifestinitsfirstclass athletic facilities, providing the necessary amenities for a student athlete to achieve his/her athletic goals and compete at higher levels.

Southern Utah University is an ideal place to achieve academic and athletic excellence and reach the high expectations we all have. Southern Utah University is one of the best locations to experience a true college atmosphere.
