CSM SEG - Wallace Fund Report Camborne School of Mine’s SEG Student Chapter could not spend the funding obtained from the Wallace Fund to run its originally planned trip to Parys Mountain, Wales. This was due to issues surrounding scheduling of the trip which resulted in not enough students being able to attend. Thus, the funds were allocated to the 2016/17 committee to be spent on field-related excursions, primarily to subsidise students for travel expenses. Hungary Fieldtrip – Sampling methods on abandoned mining regions Dates: 14 th -18 th May 2017 This trip was hosted by the University of Miskolc’s SEG Student Chapter (Hungary) and was well attended by students from UK SEG chapters. It focussed on one of the most basic methods in mining activity, field sampling techniques. Course participants learnt about theoretical, statistical and physical aspects of sampling from Professors of Miskolc University. The trip was professionally organised and highly informative, all three student who attended from CSM were incredibly impressed by the industry-focus of the trip. Day 1 – Telkibanya, Hungary Our first day in Eastern Europe was spent at Miskolc University where we were introduced to members of attending SEG Student Chapters and treated to several introductory presentations from PhD students and staff. Day 2 – Telkibanya, Hungary Students were taken down a 200-year old underground gold mine and learned how to use a portable XRF to measure potassium content along the 500m adit. The afternoon consisted of rock and soil sampling of the ground above the mine, for many student this was a new skill to learn and our Hungarian hosts were great in explaining to participants effective and systematic methods of data collection Day 3 – Smolnik and Gelnica, Slovakia This region has a gold and copper mining heritage and this site was chosen to bring students as acid rock drainage is still occurring here, driven by the high concentration of sulphide minerals in the rock mass. The focus of the day was on natural water flows and thus learning how to take water samples. Students took pH/Eh measurements and sample preparation and evaluation of results took place in the evening.
