  • 2014 Jaguars The NAIA/A.I.I.

    The NAIA

The University of Houston-Victoria is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and participates as a member of the Association of Inde-pendent Institutions Conference (A.I.I.). The NAIA‟s first general session of the „organizing con-vention‟ was under the auspices of the National Associa-tion of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) and was held in the Phillips Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday, March 10, 1940. In 1952, as a result of the expressed desires of the member institutions, appropriate steps were taken by which the NAIB was transformed into the NAIA, and the first all-encompassing set of rules and standards were

adopted. With the Association's new name came the addition of national championships in golf, tennis and outdoor track and field. Football, cross country, baseball and swim-ming and diving were added to the championships calen-dar in 1956. Wrestling (1958), soccer (1959), bowling (1962-78), gymnastics (1964-84), indoor track and field (1966) and men's volleyball (1969-80) were later addi-tions. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character devel-opment.

    Association of Independent Institutions

    3 2014 Jaguars Men’s Soccer

The University of Houston-Victoria joined the Association of Independ-ent Institutions Conference in 2009. That same year the Jaguars won the conference softball and baseball titles and established themselves as one of the top teams in the confer-ence. The conference was formed in 2008 and membership is open to any “independent” NAIA four-year mem-ber institution. The term “indepen-dent” refers to an NAIA four-year member institution that does not oth-erwise belong to an NAIA-affiliated conference. The conference is currently com-prised of 23 institutions from through-out the United States and Canada that compete in 12 different sports. Among the sports are men‟s and women‟s cross country, men‟s and women‟s soccer, volleyball, football, men‟s and women‟s basketball, men‟s and women‟s golf, baseball, softball, men‟s and women‟s tennis, men‟s and women‟s track and field,

wrestling and swimming. Members of the conference include Allen University, Ashford University, University of British Columbia, Cali-fornia State University-San Marcos, Fisher College, UH-Victoria, Indiana University Northwest, Johnson & Wales University - Denver, and Northern New Mexico College. Adrian Rigby is entering his fifth season as head men‟s soccer coach at the University of Houston-Victoria. Rigby became UHV‟s first head coach in 2010 after spending five sea-sons as an assistant coach at St. Edward‟s University where the Hilltop-pers claimed the 2009 Heartland Conference title. Rigby guided the Jaguars to their first-ever Association of Independent Institutions Conference tournament berth during the 2012 where the Jag-uars dropped a triple-overtime shootout decision to Jamestown College. The Jaguars finished the 2013 season with a 9-5-2 record under Rigby, who has an overall record of 27-33-6 in his four seasons at the helm. The Jaguars have steadily shown improvement each season under Rigby‟s guidance since going 3-11-2 in their first season. The Jaguars finished 6-10-1 in their second season before finishing with their best winning percentage last season with a .625 winning percentage.

During his time at St. Edward‟s, the team achieved an NSCAA top-25 ranking in the 2006 and 2008 seasons, climbing as high as No. 12 in the 2008 poll. Prior to St. Edward‟s, Rigby served as a graduate assistant coach/head goalkeeper trainer at Midwestern State University for two seasons. During his time at MSU, the team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2003. In 2004, the Midwestern goalie was named the Southwest Soccer Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. A native of North Delta, British Columbia, Canada, Rigby graduated from Averett University in 2001 with a BS in Sports Medicine/Wellness and completed his MEd in Curriculum Instruction and Kinesiology at Midwestern State in 2005. A four-year starter at Averett, he was selected to the 1998 all-state team and the 1998 and 2001 all-conference teams. Experience key for Jaguars With 17 lettermen back, including eight starters, the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars men‟s soccer team is primed to make a run at its second trip to the Association of Independent Institu-tions Conference Championship in 2014. Among the key players back is senior midfielder Hector Gonzalez, who is cur-rently UHV‟s all-time assists leader with nine and starts (49) Gonzalez is a two-time A.I.I. All-Conference first team selection and has been named the UHV men‟s soccer MVP for the past two seasons. In 50 games, he has scored 11 goals to go along with his nine assists to stand third all-time on the points list with 31. Also back are seniors Mauricio Malagon, Rajan Ghag and Jose Aguero who have appeared in 40, 38 and 32 games respec-tively in the past three seasons for the Jaguars. They are joined by returnees Lewis Edwards and Jhostan Padron who appeared in 14 and 11 games respective-ly last year in their first season with the Jaguars.

Joining Gonzalez and Edwards back in the starting lineup will be junior Hector Ramirez and sophomores Juan Vega, Jack Pluckwell, Taylor Gordon and Mar-cus Watts. Gordon was named second team A.I.I. all-conference as a freshman. The Jaguars will need to find replace-ments for a couple of key positions with the loss of defender Israel Nava, goal-keeper Henrik Hundesruegge and leading scorers Daniel Lopez and Christian Thur-man. Mark MacPhee and Charlie Camacho are set to battle for the goalkeeping spot after red-shirting last season. The Jagu-ars will also be counting on Ghag and Nelson Castro to take up some of the slack in the defensive opening left by Nava‟s departure. After compiling their best winning per-centage in the four-years of the program last season with a 9-5 record, the Jaguars are focused on returning to the A.I.I. Con-ference Championships after making their first appearance in 2012.

Junior Hector Ramirez returns for his third season with the UHV Jaguars.

    23 2014 Jaguars Men’s Soccer

Jags complete second 9-win season Despite coming up just short of their goal, the University of Houston

    -Victoria men's soccer team finished

with a nine-game win season for the

    second straight year while setting

    several records along the way.

The Jaguars opened the season on a

blitz winning eight of their first 10

    games, including a season-best seven

-game win streak, but were unable to

become the first UHV team to notch

a 10-game win season when they

finished with a 1-3-2 record down

    the stretch.

Along the way the Jaguars set three

    single-game and two single-season

    records, while tying one single-game

    mark.

    The Jaguars set single-game team

marks for most points (19) and most

goals (8) in an 8-2 win over South-

west Assemblies of God and a mark

for most shots (26) in a win over

    Schreiner. Freshman forward Daniel

Lozano also tied a single-game rec-

ord for most assists at two in the

    Schreiner win.

    The Jaguars seven-game win streak

    was also a single-season record,

    while freshman goalkeeper Henrik

    Hundesruegge also set a single-

season mark with 62 saves. The Jag-

uars also tied a single-season mark

    for goals scored with 36.

Lozano paced the Jaguars with six

goals, and was followed by juniors

    Hector Gonzales and Jhostan Padron

    and sophomore Christian Turman

    with four each.

Lozano also turned in a team-high

    three assists, while junior Ranique

    Ramasarupe and freshman Jack

    Pluckwell each had two.

Along with his 62 saves, Hun-

desruegge allowed 21 goals as he

compiled a 9-5-2 record in goal.

    The Jaguars outshot their opponents

219-150 and led in shots on goal 117

    -84.

    Five players earned Association of

    Independent Institutions all-

    conference honors, with Gonzalez

being named to the first team, while

    senior defender Israel Nava and

    freshman defender Taylor Gordon ,

along with Lozano were named to

    the second team. Hundesruegge

    earned honorable mention recogni-

    tion.

    Hector Gonza-lez was named

    first team all-conference for

    the second straight year for

the Jaguars following the 2013 season.

The Jaguars finished the 2013 season with their second consecutive nine-win season.

    2014 Jaguars UHV Athletic History
