better tomorrow.

PARTY IN THE PASTURE

The 10th Annual Party in the Pasture was the best yet with over 800 in attendance and net proceeds in excess of $100,000! Thank you to Presenting Sponsor Valero Energy Corporation for their donation of $10,000, which was a portion of a larger contribution of $80,000 to Meals on Wheels! Be sure to save the date for this year's PIP event which is scheduled for 11/09/2014 at Rio Cibolo Ranch! We thank our chairs, the Dicksons and Santillanos.

Contact Susie at 735-5115 if you are interested in pursuing this possibility.

The dancing begins with one boisterous staff member twirling and singing along to Elvis Presley. Her energy catches fire and one by one the participants at Grace Place join in with smiles and clapping as the music begins to resonate among the group.

It is socializing such as this and the array of other group activities

Grace Place, caregivers spend less time responding to problematic behaviors and more time enjoying positive interactions with their family member. If you would like to learn about getting started in our Alzheimer’s program reach out to us at 210-735-5115.

Christian Senior Services is fortunate to be able to work with individuals who give themselves and their time to help our community. Everyday volunteers show up at our facilities to plate lunches, visit with homebound seniors, provide friendship as well as countless other services that help improve the lives of homebound seniors or those with Alzheimer’s. These acts are done with a heart of giving and never a request for anything in return. Our gratitude extends to all of our volunteers. There are the few who go above and beyond what could be requested. We honor those people and organizations who are exem-plary in how they give themselves each year at our Spirit of Compassion Luncheon (pg 3). United Way also celebrates the dedication and service of truly outstanding volunteers annually with a volunteer of the year ceremony. We have nominated those we feel serve as rolemodels of service.

that allow those afflicted by Alzheimer’s or dementia to enjoy their interaction with peers, gain confidence in their abilities as well as improve their sense of wellbeing.

Establishing friendships and creating a new social network for participants isn’t only a benefit to themselves; caregivers are also able to reap the rewards. They gain time and peace of mind. This allows them to attend to life’s other pressing matters while not feeling neglectful to the one they are caring for.

The Genevieve and Ward Orsinger Foundation will donate $25,000 to Christian Senior Services (CSS) if you help us raise $25,000 in matching donations between April 1 - June 30, 2014. With your help, CSS will receive $50,000 to insure the health and well being of homebound seniors as well as reduce the impact of looming government funding cuts. Please consider making a gift today.

Challenge Grant Rules:• Your gift may be designated to any CSS program, including Meals on Wheels, Grace Place or Companionship Services.• Your gift must be received between April 1 – June 30, 2014.• If this is your first donation to CSS, 100% of your gift applies to the match. That’s right, 100%!• If you are already a donor, the increased amount of your gift over previous gifts you’ve donated in the past two years will count

towards the match. For example, if you made a gift of $100 in 2012 or 2013 and increase your gift to $150 during April 1 – June 30, 2014, the increased amount of $50 will apply towards the Challenge Grant.• Donations supporting our special events, Party in the Pasture and Spirit of Compassion Luncheon, are not eligible.

Gratitude

Dear Grace Place,

Thank you for giving my mommy the gift of time! Time to have a picnic with me and watch the clouds drift by. I saw my mommy relax which she hasn’t done in 3 months! I enjoyed spending quality time with my mom.

Thank you,

Ryan Anderson (4 years old)

Oscar (back) brings ARC volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound.

By 9am the Meals on Wheels kitchen is alive and buzzing. With the controlled chaos of a bee hive, everyone moves from station to refrigerators to heater without a hitch. Each day brings in a new set of faces and smiles as volunteers typically rotate on a once a week schedule. On this particular Tuesday morning Oscar escorts a group of VIP volunteers from the Arc of San Antonio, a local non-profit that assists families and people with disabilities. Dressed in t-shirts and tennis shoes, boots and baseball caps the space suddenly becomes more alive. Two girls are holding hands grinning from ear to ear with the excitement of meal delivery

pushing their way to the front of the small group to get closer to their supervisor in anticipation of being first to get started. The Arc has been graciously delivering Meals on Wheels since 2012 and the full impact of this group in the community is often unseen. It extends far beyond the job at hand. The Arc VIPs improve the lives of San Antonio’s needy populations while changing

perceptions and changing their own world.

What the VIPs teach us through their work is that they have so much to give. They may require the use of wheelchairs, walkers, or assistive technology devices in order to communicate, but they can help and with giving hearts they bring joy to others.

Partnerships create the opportunity for participants of other non-profits to engage with homebound seniors and provide them with a sense of contribution to the community. If you have a group that would enjoy meal delivery please contact Volunteer Services at 210-735-5115.

The Big Give S.A. is a 24-hour day of giving that will take place from midnight to midnight on

May 6, 2014.

The purpose of this community-wide giving challenge is to increase public awareness of the impact local nonprofits make in addressing our community’s social challenges, bring nonprofits and donors together, expand the idea of online giving, connect people to the causes that move them the most and, of course, make giving FUN.

We are participating in this year’s Big Give in an effort to share the joy of giving with new donors. We encourage all of our regular donors to continue their support directly with our organization.
