Thanks to New York State Gov. AndrewCuomo, $25 million is being invested herethrough the NY Works program and for thefirst time in generations, the nation’s oldeststate park is undergoing an extensiverehabilitation.

Some of the projects are underway andothers will be starting over the next fewyears, but all of them will be guided by theNiagara Falls State Park LandscapeImprovements Plan. Adopted in 2012, this

report offers a comprehensive plan that willrestore landscape designer Frederick LawOlmsted’s principles of design for the parkand create uniform guidelines for parkfurnishings and materials with the aim ofachieving a greater visual consistency andcohesiveness in the park, whileaccommodating millions of patrons thatvisit each year.

If you want to experience what the park willlook like in the next several years as this

project moves forward, look no further thantwo of the most popular destinations in thepark - Three Sisters Islands and Luna Island.Construction there was completed in thespring of 2013 and the makeover is receivingrave reviews!

We apologize in advance for any inconvenienceyou experience during your visit to Niagara FallsState Park because of our revitalization work.

The historic “Flight of Five Locks” in Lockport just began a renovation project that is sure to attract a lot of attention. Travel with uson this journey as we take the engineering marvel of its time into a new era.

Authentic wooden lock gates and wooden balance beams will be creaking and spilling the waters of Lake Erie over the 60-ft. difference in elevation of the Niagara Escarpment at Lockport just as the two sets of finely tuned electrical locks efficientlydisplace over 2.7 million gallons of water to lock through boats on the historic Erie Canal. Lockport is currently restoring Erie CanalLocks 69 and 70, the first two of the “Flight of Five” Locks, which have not operated since the early 20th Century. Uponcompletion, scheduled for July 2014, the Locks District will provide heritage enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to visit acharming site featuring both a 20th Century set of two locks and the technology of a mid-19th Century flight of locks functioningimmediately adjacent to each other. Follow the progress on Facebook at “Erie Canal Flight of Five.”

Kid’s QuotesWhen the average visitor hears NiagaraFalls, two things can come to mind. Oneimage would be the Falls and the otherwould be the tale of two countries thatshare this w onder. The United States andCanada both have the privilege topresent Niagara to citizens of their owncountries and the world as well, sowhat’s the difference? The Canadian side is across the gorgefrom the American Falls. This in turncreates a view that cannot be explainedby a simple photograph. With great view of our own, theAmerican side offers you the chance toget up close and personal with thecataracts, in Niagara Falls State Park – theoldest state park in the United States. TheCave of the Winds is a walking tour thatbrings you to the base of the Bridal VeilFalls and gives you the once-in-a-lifetimechance to touch and experience the fallsfull circle. Niagara Falls, Canada, is one that can becompared to a metropolis-style touristattraction. With various national brandsand companies who bring their productsto the Falls Region, it is definitely great tosee. With NiagaraFalls USA, theexposure to thisarea does notstop at thewater. With animpeccablewine regionlocated less than 20 minutes from theFalls, to world-class shopping mallswithin minutes, Niagara Falls USA cankeep families, couples, honeymooners, and nature lovers busy for days. Of course, these comparisons are justsmall facets of this exciting tourismdestination. Niagara Falls is withindriving distance of major cosmopolitancenters such as Toronto, Cleveland, andNew York. Both sides of the border willgive you and your traveling companionsan experience that is uniquely Niagara.

Love in the MistAnyone sitting adjacent to the rushingwater of the Niagara River cascadingdown Niagara Falls knows themagical, magnificent and breathtakingatmosphere it can create for firstkisses, whispering sweet nothings orproposing a lifelong commitment to asignificant other. Timeless LoveAnother reason why couples chooseto celebrate their wedding orhoneymoon in Niagara Falls USA isthe rich history associated with thearea. By the early 1900s, Niagara Fallsproclaimed itself the HoneymoonCapital of the World and in 1953,while filming Niagara, Joe DiMaggiovisited Marilyn Monroe on location –spreading the romantic aura of theFalls. In the 21st Century many youngcouples chose to honeymoon in thesame spot their parents orgrandparents did. Many emptynesters come back to recreate theromantic memories they fondly

remember from the early days of theirrelationships. From the beauty, charm, mystery andtradition, there are plenty of reasonsfor couples to get married andhoneymoon in Niagara Falls USA. SavorySavoryLet’s dishNiagara USA is home to a growing winetrail, and much more. Find out whyvisitors are savoring our culinarydelights. We've asked Lisa Tucker, localculinary expert, her opinion.

Why do you think our county has become this food mecca? The Niagara County food andagriculture industry is huge right now.Yes, we have 800 farms and agricultureis still our top employer but there is arenaissance happening. We have ourfirst brewery, first cidery, and ourfantastic soil makes for fast growingvines on our expanding Niagara WineTrail USA.

If you were hosting someone from out of town, where would you take them?Outside of the Falls I would head east. There’s this great new restaurant calledMericana on Main St. in Lockport. They’ve been getting rave reviews andpour local provisions and that’s veryimportant. I would stick with the littletowns that make our community sounique, specifically Lewiston, and thenhead up to Lake Ontario so we would besure to hit the Niagara Wine Trail USA.

Singer Farms Naturals up there is also a must see – their green initiatives (windand geothermal) and the fact they haveu-pick is great for visitors. Of coursethere’s Becker Farms – familiesdefinitely need to stop there, especiallyin the fall for all of their activities andapple picking.

Where do you find yourself dining these days?Woodcock Brothers Brewery is the newfood and beverage experience. Thewings are great and nothing tops theirbrick oven pizza.

Where would you spend a day in Niagara County?I would spend it in Lockport – startingwith Sweet Sixteen Cafe. Do a winetasting at Flight of Five Winery. Do abike ride starting at Sweet Rides and endthe day with a drink at Mericana.

Lisa Tucker is the publisher of Edible Buffalo magazine, food systemseducator for Ag EconomicDevelopment at Cornell UniversityCooperative Extension and co-founderand executive director of Field & ForkNetwork.

Hometown brewery keeps thirsty visitorscoming back for more!

Quench your thirst at Woodcock Brothers Brewery

638 lake St., Wilson.

Visit niagara-usa.com/restaurantsfor more information about

Woodcock Brothers Brewery andmore eateries to experience

throughout the county.

Known to locals as the old cold storagebuilding in town, two brothersenvisioned much more. When Mark andTim Woodcock (below), along with theirwives, Andrea and Debbie, saw the vast, empty space, they knew it was the placeto grow their passion. They all enjoybrewing beer so starting a businessbased on a hobby would be a great idea– and it’s proven to be.

Woodcock Brothers Brewery (638 LakeSt., Wilson 14172) is a brewery andrestaurant, with a full service food menuall prepared in a wood fired oven. It’s thefirst brewery in Niagara County to makebeer on site and serve it.

“Business has been wonderful,” Debbiesaid. “We all live in Niagara County sowe thought a brewery would be a greataddition to the region – and it has been!”

Located just south of Lake Ontario,Debbie said being in Wilson, NY madesense, given all of the fishermen andvisitors to the quaint towns along thelake. The nearby Niagara Wine Trail

USA has also helped.

At Woodcock Brothers Brewery, patronscan choose from a full menu of ales, aHarvest Wheat and more. Soon lagersand pilsners will be added to the menu.Their most popular beers are theirAmber, an ale that delivers a mild maltflavor and lightly hopped finish; andPorter, a rich roasted malt coffee flavorbeer with a bitter hopped note.

Lake Effect Artisan Ice Cream has a new home. Howdid the first season go?It was an amazing first year. We couldn't beprouder to be in a new shop directly abovethe historic Flight of Five Locks. It's really adream come true. The community has beengreat, and we're excited to know that somany others are coming to Lockportand seeing what we have to offer.

You're situated on the banks of historyon the Erie Canal. Do patrons enjoy icecream while taking in this unique culture? When we put together our proposal for thenew 79 Canal St. location, one of our talkingpoints was that ice cream is mobile. Wethought that we would be perfect for a spot sorich in history because our product lets patronswander around, ice cream in hand, and enjoy theengineering marvel right out our front door. Notto mention they can take a Lockport Cave &Underground Boat Ride, take a train ride, rent abike at Sweet Ride Rentals, or go through thehistoric Locks themselves on Lockport Locks & ErieCanal Cruises.

It seems like Lake Effect Artisan IceCream has become a destination unto

itself. How are you keeping up withthe demand? It has been quite the adventure. We are currently looking foranother location to make our ice

cream so we can increase our output. We justpurchased our first delivery truck and are about tomove our product into all of the Western New York

Wegmans. It has been a great adventure and a very, very busy one. It's great knowing that people come to

Lockport to grab some Lake Effect and at the same timeenjoy all that our beautiful city has to offer.

Everyone enjoys the one-of-a-kind flavors and creativemarketing ( including an app with a Yeti ) you guys scoopout. What's on the menu next year? Our favorite thing to do is to create new, unique flavors sothat is always on the menu. One thing that we can share, (ifyou know us, we are quite secretive here at Lake Effect) is thatnext season we are going to be selling some of the unique, localingredients that we use in our ice creams. We also are going toexpand our milkshakes, ice cream sandwiches and possiblystart making other unique frozen treats.

Just minutes from Niagara Falls, the NiagaraWine Trail USA is regarded as the most cutting-edge wine trail in the country, but the art andscience of grape growing and wine making hasbeen in our area for many years. There arerecords of a winery that was open during the 19thcentury, and one of our current member wineriesproduces fruit on vineyards that are over one

hundred years old. The unique micro-climate,between the Niagara Escarpment and LakeOntario, combined with the dolomitic limestonesoils to the gravel silts near the lake shore, is idealfor growing a wide variety of fruit; includingVinifera grapes such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay,Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc,Syrah and Merlot.

Happy Campers!Whether you are popping up a tent or driving an ultra-modern motor home to NiagaraUSA (or anything in-between), there are plenty of camping facilities to share our littlepiece of natural wonder. Two state parks in Niagara USA also offer full-servicecamping facilities. Four Mile Creek State Park Campground and Golden Hill State Park(nysparks.com) are both situated on Lake Ontario and a relatively close drive toNiagara Falls. Plenty of other private campgrounds also exist to put you where youwant to be. Most are family-oriented sites offering special programs and activitiesthroughout the camping season. Niagara USA is a great camping destination!

Gone Fishing!Niagara USA is home to one of the most diverse and spectacular freshwater

sport fisheries on the planet. The Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and Lake Erie are all

within casting distance for salmon, trout, bass, walleye, muskellunge and so

much more. You can fish for many of the species year-round. It doesn’t stop with fishing, either. Birding,

biking, hiking and boating are all available, too. Take your outdoor adventure to Niagara USA – you’re sure

to satisfy your urge to enjoy all nature has to offer.

Have a Ball!If you are a scratch golfer or a duffer looking to take in some prettyamazing courses, Niagara USA offers up a wide range of opportunitiesfor everyone. At the top of the list has to be the Hickory Stick GolfCourse in Lewiston. This Robert Trent Jones II-designed coursecombines the area’s unique topography with a treasured flora – the rareShellbark Hickory trees that can be found on site. Ranked sixth in thecountry as one of the top new golf venues, this is a course that’s bothpicturesque and challenging. It’s good to note that one of the topamateur events in the country – the Porter Cup – is held each July at theNiagara Falls Country Club located at the top of the NiagaraEscarpment. Through the years, the Porter Cup has hosted many oftoday's golf greats, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Lockport is home to four excellent courses, too.

Sport fishing opportunities in Niagara areendless. In 2012, Olcott Beach in theTown of Newfane was recognized by theWorld Fishing Network as the “UltimateFishing Town” after a nationwide vote. While we won’t diminish the magnitudeof that feat, the fishing there is only asmall piece of our fishing tackle box.

Wilson, Youngstown, Lewiston, Niagara Falls, Lockport, North Tonawanda – allexcellent fishing spots that have earnedrespected reputations. The glamour fish –the one that attracts the most attentionfrom the angling fraternity – is theChinook or King salmon. According tothe state’s Department of EnvironmentalConservation (DEC), the fishing forsalmon the last 10 years was the best it’sever been in the 28 year history of the lake

creel census! Yes, it’s that good, with fishregularly topping the 30 pound mark. Forderby-winning fish, Niagara USA is thebest place to be along the Lake Ontarioshoreline. Bring your own boat or hire acharter captain – we have the access andthe professional fleet to meet your everyneed.

If you're land bound, there is great shore fishing in the Niagara Gorge; Burt Damand 18 Mile Creek, as well as other laketributaries; the piers at Wilson and Olcott;the New York Power Authority FishingPlatform in Devil’s Hole and powerreservoir; the Erie Canal, the upperNiagara River and a long list of other areahot spots. In fact, pick up a copy of theGreater Niagara Hot Spot Fishing Map tohelp plan your adventure. A weekly

fishing report is currently recorded at 1-877-FALLS-US and is also on the websiteat niagara-usa.com.

Niagara USA is also an excellent area for birding, recognized internationally as anImportant Bird Area. A Niagara RiverGreenway Corridor is currently beingdeveloped from Buffalo to Youngstown.Add in biking, hiking, boating and all thepaddle sports to satisfy your outdoorneeds. The Erie Canal is a blossomingrecreational waterway that's underratedby many. While it's most noted forboating and its historic value, fishing canbe very good for warm water fish specieslike pike, bass, carp and panfish. It's also agreat venue to paddle a canoe or kayak –from North Tonawanda to Middleportand all points in between...or beyond.
