Welcome Kankakee Community College student athletes, parents, supporters and fans!

Participation and success in athletics is often the basis for many of life’s skills and experiences. Competition through KCC’s six intercollegiate sports enhances a student athlete’s desire for excellence while further developing teamwork, communication, time management and commitment skills. As we begin

another year of KCC athletics, I continue to be inspired by the level of commitment and determination of our student athletes to succeed not just in their respective sports but in the classroom!

Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong

dedication of our complete coaching staff and are supported by the KCC Board of Trustees and our community. As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encouragement and support to our student athletes.

It is an honor to be part of the Cavalier family, and I would like to thank the parents of our student athletes, each member of the coaching staff, and the members of our Cavalier Club who help to support our athletic teams.

Please join the Board of Trustees, myself, faculty, staff, and all Cavalier fans in wishing each of our teams and coaches a successful season.

John Avendano, Ph.D.

President

2014 Season PreviewThe Cavaliers are coming off a 49-14 season, which included a 12th consecutive sectional championship and a second place finish in the Region IV Tournament. The Cavaliers also led the nation in batting average (.350) in 2013. With 15 players returning and a solid group of freshmen, the Cavaliers are preparing to make another run at a Region IV Championship.

The Cavs start the year ranked 18th in the NJCAA preseason poll. “A strength of this year’s team will be experience, with seven returning position players who saw significant playing time as freshmen,” says Head Coach Todd Post. “We also return three pitchers who saw action in the starting rotation and three arms that each had 16 or more appearances out of the bullpen.”

Returners who are starting pitchers include Tyler Sabol (8-0 record, 3.46 ERA, 52 IP), Tim Blake (4-2 record, 27 IP) and Kyle Pool (3-0 record, 27.2 IP). Sophomores Alex Bullard (1-0 record, 20.1 IP), Luke Jarvis (2-1 record, 17 IP) and Cori Herbert (1-2 record, 3 saves, 19.2 IP) are also competing for spots in the starting rotation. Freshmen Jimmy Brandt, Scott Runyan, and Thomas Wolgemuth are also competing for innings as starters. Also, talented freshmen Adam Slager, Cody Trost and Henry Gerritson will see action out of the bullpen. Gerritson will begin the season in the closer role.

The Cavaliers also return some offense with catcher John McLaughlin (.374 BA, 18 2B, 3 HR, 65 RBI), third baseman Ryan Montcalm (.380 BA, 19 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 48 RBI), first baseman Zach Barkdull (.350 BA, 6 2B, 30 RBI), second baseman Kalvin Thong (.344 BA, 4 2B, 37 RBI), outfielder Eric Phillis (.332 BA, 17 2B, 9 3B, 1 HR, 45 RBI), outfielder Cully Wilson (.390 BA, 6 2B, 22 RBI, 25 SB), and Kjeld Torkelson (.287 BA, 9 2B, 7 3B, 39 RBI). Sophomores Tylor Hedge and Tyler Knight along with freshman Trey Hannam provide depth in the outfield. Also, freshmen Jeff Cardenas, Joe Stukenborg, Dakota Ware, Michael Kendrick, and Jacob Lane are competing for playing time in the infield. Defensively the Cavaliers should throw some leather around, led by All- Region IV and Gold Glove second baseman, Kalvin Thong and slick fielding shortstop, Jeff Cardenas. The Cavs are very solid behind the plate with John McLaughlin, Nick Ulrey and Zach Rapp handling the catching duties.

“Consistent pitching and defense are the two most important parts of this great game,” says Coach Post. “We feel this group will make us competitive every time out. A core of these players gained experience and had some success as freshmen. Our goal each year is to win 40 games and a Region IV Championship. We have to play good baseball and be prepared for the tournament that starts the second week of May.”

Luke is a big left-hander with a deceptive motion and live arm. He continues to improve every day and will be counted on to pitch big games

this season against Region IV opponents.

Sophomore • PitcherHeight: 6’0” • Weight: 230Bats: Right • Throws: RightHometown: Chicago • High School: Wheaton Academy

“Herby” continues to work hard on his conditioning to become a complete college pitcher. His consistency will be key to his success in the starting rotation in 2014. We expect a big year from Cori.
