    3WASHINGTON KASTLES

    2014 SEASON

    Dear Kastles Fans,

On behalf of our players and staff, I am

extremely proud to welcome you to the

    seventh season of Washington Kastles

tennis. The team has quickly establisheditself after winning three straight WTT

titles and four in the last five years.

Most importantly to us, Kastles Stadium

has been a place where people from

    throughout our region have come

together with friends and family to

create memories that will last a lifetime.

    Our four championships, two perfect

seasons, 34-match win streak and all

    of our community programs would

not have been possible without you,

    the most passionate tennis fans

in the country. Our players always

credit Kastles fans for inspiring the

    championships theyve won and

records theyve broken. The sky is the

    limit again in 2014.

We are very pleased that the same coremembers from our 2013 championship

team are returning this season: two-

time reigning WTT Female MVP Martina

    Hingis, defending US Open doubles

    champion Leander Paes, Kastles closer

Bobby Reynolds and Top 25 doubles

    player Anastasia Rodionova.

In addition, three of the best players

    in tennis will represent Washington

at Kastles Stadium in 2014: 5-time

    Wimbledon champion Venus Williams

    (July 16), 6-foot-8 and World No. 17

Kevin Anderson (July 9-10), and rising

star and World No. 22 Sloane Stephens

    (July 22).

We are also excited to welcome

everyone to our new home: Kastles

Stadium at the Smith Center! With

padded seats, HD replays and animatedscoreboards, I know that you will love

not only the comfort and amenities, but

also the incredible intensity, energy and

    excitement inside our new arena.

As in previous seasons, Kastles matches

    offer world-class tennis AND world-class

    entertainment courtesy of Leighton the

Stilt Walker, our mascots Topspin and

Slice, and the only cheerleaders in pro

    tennis.

    In addition, children 16-and-under are

invited onto the court for autographs

from all home and visiting players after

tonights match. And dont let them go

home without a souvenir! Our popular

racquet giveaway program is back for a

    seventh straight season, providing kids

12-and-under with a free junior racquet

to engage them to play this great sport.

The Kastles are 24-1 in our last 25 home

matches entering this season, and its

all thanks to the greatest home-court

advantage in pro sports. We cant wait

to create an atmosphere unlike any

other at Kastles Stadium at the Smith

Center, with rabid fans like you showing

our opponents that the Kastles still and

    always will Refuse to Lose!

    2014 SEASON

    HISTORY OF

    MYLAN WTTHISTORY OF THE

    SMITH CENTER

    The Washington Kastles are bringing

pro tennis to the Smith Center for

the first time in nearly 25 years.

    D.C. native Harold Solomon

    earned $19,000 for singles and

    $2,000 for doubles after sweeping

the titles at the 1976 Volvo

Classic, the first of five mens

    tournaments at the Smith Center.

    In February, Kastles players

    Venus Williams ($471,841) and

    Anastasia Rodionova ($35,910)

took home a penny or two more

for winning the Dubai singles and

    doubles titles respectively.

    The more things change, however,

the more they stay the same.

The Smith Center hosted the Virginia

    Slims of Washington womens

    event nine times (1977-1979, 1982-

    1986, 1990). In those tournaments,

    Martina Navratilova went 38-1

with seven titles in singles and

24-1 with six titles in doubles.

    From one D.C. dynasty to

another, the Kastles come tothe Smith Center with three

    straight WTT championships

    and a 46-2 record since 2011.

    Many of the greatest tennis

    players ever have competed at

    the Smith Center, including Bjorn

    Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl,

    Chris Evert and Tracy Austin.

Youre likely to spot several former

pros in the Kastles crowd this

    summer. WTT co-founder Billie

    Jean King, WTT Commissioner Ilana

    Kloss, WTEF Executive Director Eleni

    Rossides and DPR Tennis Director

Jeri Ingram have all played at the

    Smith Center. And Kastles owner

Mark Ein was even a ballkid here!

    From legends to locals, Hall-of-

    Famers to hometown heroes,

one woman is clearly the First

    Lady of Smith Center tennis.

Navratilova won 76 of 80 singles

sets in her eight appearances at

    the Smith Center, dominating two

    generations in Kastles-like fashion.

With the Kastles moving into the

    house Martina built, connections

    between the franchise and

    Navratilova have quickly surfaced.

    Martina Hingis, named after

Navratilova in 1980, returns for her

    second season with Washington.

    Kastles captain Leander Paes

teamed with Navratilova to win theAustralian Open and Wimbledon

mixed doubles titles in 2003. At

a 2009 WTT match between the

    Boston Lobsters and New York

    Buzz, a 52-year-old Navratilova

    lost womens and mixed doubles

    to a 16-year-old Sloane Stephens.

    Now a Kastle, Stephens leads

    Washington against the Springfield

Lasers in her new teams home

finale. If history is any indication,

she and the Kastles will pick up

    where the ageless Navratilova left

off at the Smith Center 24 years

ago and walk away a winner.

    Mylan World TeamTennis (WTT) has

come a long way -- from a concept

concocted by Billie Jean and Larry King

in 1962 to a league featuring the hottest

pro sports franchise 52 years later.

It wasnt until 1974 that Billie Jean

King brought her and Larrys ideato life, introducing the world to

    TeamTennis Pro League. Through

    the decades, Grand Slam champions

and No. 1 players have turned to

    WTT as an exclusive opportunity

to abandon the lonely grind of the

tennis tour and play on a team.

Between the lines, the best tennis

players in the world have taken to

    WTTs multi-colored courts. Rod

Laver (1976), Bjorn Borg (1977) and

    Victoria Azarenka (2006) are among

WTT Rookie of the Year winners,

    while Chris Evert (1976), Martina

    Navratilova (1978) and Jimmy Connors

    (1993) are Hall-of-Famers with WTT

    MVP on their respective resumes.

Following a league hiatus in 1979 and

1980, several WTT teams teetered on

the brink of a perfect season. In 1986,

the San Antonio Racquets went 15-1

en route to the WTT championship.

And in 1994, the Newport Beach Dukescompleted the regular season 14-0,

only to fall in the playoff semifinals.

    Enter the Washington Kastles: WTTs

very first franchise in the nations

    capital. Following a 6-8 inaugural

season in 2008, the Kastles captured

    the King Trophy in 2009, 2011, 2012

    and 2013. Washington has posted

    an unprecedented record of 46-2

over the last three years, including a

    record-setting 34-match win streak.

What the Racquets and the Dukes

    came oh-so-close to accomplishing,

the Kastles have done twice. In

    both 2011 and 2012, Washington

    completed the first two perfect

    seasons in WTT history.

    As the Kastles make international

    headlines, WTT is making major

strides as well. Mylan signed on as the

title sponsor in 2012, Venus Williams

    and Andy Roddick became part-

owners in 2013, and ESPN begins

four years of nightly WTT coverage

    this season. League commissioner

Ilana Kloss is hopeful that WTT

will expand to 16 teams by 2018.

One thing in Mylan World TeamTennis

is for sure: The Washington Kastles are

here to stay. Having secured their spot

in the WTT record books, the Kastles

are eager to add to their ever-growing

legacy in the exciting years to come.

With two perfect seasons, three straight championships and a

record-setting 34-match win streak, the Washington Kastles are

quickly rewriting the history of Mylan World TeamTennis (WTT)

    2014 SEASON

    2008On July 8, 2008, the incomparable Serena

Williams represented the Kastles in their very

first match at CityCenterDC, and the Kastles

have taken the Washington sports scene by

    storm ever since.

    KASTLES HISTORY

    & MILESTONES

    WASHINGTONKASTLES.COM@WASHKASTLES FACEBOOK.COM/WASHKASTLES

2009Grand Slam doubles champions LeanderPaes and Rennae Stubbs joined theteam in 2009. Rallying from a 5-7 start

to the season, Paes, Stubbs and the

Kastles won their final four matches,

culminating in a wild WTT Finals against

    the Springfield Lasers.

With a jam-packed Kastles Stadium crowd supporting them, unheralded Olga

Puchkova and Scott Oudsema led Washington to its first league title. Oudsema

won singles and doubles to earn WTT Finals MVP honors, while Puchkova saved

three championship points in the final set to clinch the King Trophy for the Kastles.

2010Even with future World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka on the squad for its final four

matches, Washington narrowly missed the postseason when it lost the last match

of the 2010 regular season in Boston. However, the franchise set itself up for

long-term success by acquiring Bobby Reynolds and Venus Williams. Reynoldsevolved from WTT Male Rookie of the Year in 2010 to WTT Male MVP in 2012 and

WTT Finals MVP in 2013. Meanwhile, Williams has led the Kastles to a 10-0 record

when shes been in the teams lineup.

2011In 2011, Reynolds, Paes, Stubbs and the Williams sisters

ushered in the picturesque Kastles Stadium at The Wharf. The

Southwest Waterfront venue was home to a lot of history,

beginning with the 2011 Kastles team that went 16-0 to clinch

the first perfect season in 37 years of World TeamTennis.

Paes picked up his second WTT Male MVP award for his

regular season efforts, but again, it was an unlikely player

who rose to the occasion in the WTT Finals. World No. 184

Arina Rodionova defeated World No. 42 Tamira Paszek

to propel the Kastles to Title No. 2.

    2012As improbable as anything in

    professional sports, history

    repeated itself in 2012 when

    the Kastles completed

    a second-straight undefeated

    season, lifted the King Trophy

for a third time and extended

    their winning streak to 32

    matches.

    During the regular season,

    Venus Williams overcame a

    six-game deficit and fought

    off four match points against

the New York Sportimes. During the postseason, she was at again, breaking ties

in the Eastern Conference Championship and WTT Finals by winning the final set

in both matches. Venus swept the last five points of a winner-take-all tiebreaker in

the WTT Finals, leading the Kastles over the Sacramento Capitals 20-19.

2013With victories in their first two matches of

the 2013 season, the Kastles rounded out a

34-match win streak, surpassing the 1971-72 Los

Angeles Lakers and setting a new major U.S.

pro sports record. After two losses, Washington

won its final 12 matches of 2013 -- a streak that

the team carries into the 2014 season.

Martina Hingis jumped from the Sportimes to

the Kastles, becoming the sixth Washington

player to have been ranked World No. 1. Hingis

repeated as WTT Female MVP and the Kastles

three-peated in the WTT Finals, capturing the

King Trophy for the third straight season with

a 25-12 rout of Andy Roddick and the Lasers in

front of a sold-out crowd at Kastles Stadium.

    2014 SEASON

    WTT FORMAT

    & SCORING

GAME:Each game uses no-ad scoring. The first team to win four points wins

    the game.

3-ALL POINTS:If a game reaches 3-all, a deciding point is played in which thereceiving team chooses the side of the court that the server will hit the serve.

On 3-all points in mixed doubles, the return is taken by the player of the same

gender as the server. Over the course of a match, these critical deciding points

often prove to be the difference between winning and losing.

LETS:One exciting feature of WTT matches is that service lets are in play! If

a serve hits the net and falls into the correct service box, play continues. In a

doubles match, the non-returning player is permitted to cross over and return a

let serve, creating an exciting situation unique to WTT.

SETS:The first singles player or doubles team to win five games clinches a set.

If the set is tied at 4-4, a tiebreaker up to five points is played. If the tiebreaker is

even at 4-4, the winner of the next point wins the set.

REGULATION:If the team that wins the final set is leading in cumulative games,

that team is the winner of the match. If, however, the trailing team wins the final

set, the match goes into overtime.

OVERTIME:If the trailing team wins the last set, the players on the court for the

last set play overtime, which ends when either:

    (a) The leading team wins one game, or

    (b) The trailing team ties the cumulative game score, forcing a supertiebreaker.

SUPERTIEBREAKER:The same players on the court during overtime play a

    supertiebreaker, with the first

to seven points winning the match.

If the supertiebreaker is even at 6-6, the winner of the next point wins

    the match.

CHANGEOVERS: Players change sides after the first four games in a set or

overtime, after the first four points in a tiebreaker, before overtime, and after the

first six points in a supertiebreaker.

TIMEOUTS:WTT is instituting the use of timeouts during match play. Each team

will be allotted 2 timeouts per set, with an additional timeout being awarded to

each team if a match goes into overtime. Timeouts will be twenty seconds (:20)

in length and do not carry over between sets. Only the coach may call a timeout.

Coaches or players may enter the court area during these breaks in action.

COACHING AND SUBSTITUTIONS:Coaches are encouraged to participate

in the match. They can talk with players on the court during timeouts and

can substitute players at any point in the middle of a set. A player who

has been replaced during a substitution cannot return during the same

set. Substitutions are often made by coaches with the hope of changing

    momentum in a set.

Mylan World TeamTennis puts a spin on traditional tennis scoring in

a format that creates intense pressure on every point and thrilling

endings. Five sets up to five games are played at every WTT match,

including one set each of: Mens Singles, Womens Singles, Mens

Doubles, Womens Doubles, Mixed Doubles. A minimum of two men

and two women compete for each team each match. The team that

wins the most cumulative games over the course of five sets is the

    winner of the match.

KASTLES FOUNDING PRINCIPLESEstablished in February 2008, the Washington Kastles were founded with the goal of

building a platform that would unite and give back to the D.C. community. Specifically,

the four founding principles were and remain today:

Bring the Greater Washington community together

    Help local charitable partners

Create a center of high-quality, fun activities

Expose tennis to a wider audience

The Kastles arent just champions on the court. Off of it, our team will surpass$1 million in charitable donations this season, providing cash, grants, tickets and

tennis equipment to more than 200 charities since 2008.

Close to 6,000 tennis racquets and 9,000 tickets have been given to children

throughout the region. Each night, over 200 tickets are donated to local youth

and military charities so that they can enjoy world-class tennis courtesy of the

Kastles. In addition, Bloomberg Kids Clinics held at Kastles Stadium during the

WTT season have afforded thousands of children the opportunity to hit with

tennis superstars such as Serena and Venus Williams. Our coach and players are

dedicated to going into neighborhoods around the region to expose tennis to

    youth in our community.

FREE RACQUETS FOR KIDSThe Mark David Ein Foundation is once again sponsoring a racquet giveaway

program at all Kastles home matches to encourage the growth of our great sport.

In 2014, nearly 1,000 kids 12-and-under will receive a free junior racquet.

POST-MATCH AUTOGRAPHSAll children 16-and-under are invited to come onto the court and get autographs

from each of the home and visiting players after all Kastles home matches. This is an

amazing opportunity for kids to meet some of the best tennis players in the world.
