READY TO LEARN FUN FAIR

October 25, 2014

For more than eight years, the Ready to Learn Fun Fair has been a highly valued resource for hundreds of families across Alameda County. This year we and our partners at KQED are pleased to announce that the Fair will be held in Oakland at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, “Home of the Science Technology Engineering Math Program” on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 10am – 1pm. The goal of the Fair is to pro-mote early childhood education and encourage healthy lifestyles by showcasing community resources for families and children. The Ready to Learn Fun Fair provides families with information about local community resources in the areas of education, nutrition, social services, exercise and the arts. In addition to musical performances and a clown show, the popular television character Clifford the Big Red Dog will be in attendance to promote reading as a fun activity. Entrance to the fair is FREE and all children will receive a complimentary book and dental kit. Please contact Aisha Brown at (510) 272-6686 or at [email protected]

FAME, in partnership with Oracle Arena and O.co Coliseum, will pro-

vide free new shoes to 2,500 low-income K-12th grade students

across Alameda County. 5,000 attendees will receive resources

from a wealth of community and non-profit organizations on

healthy lifestyle, wellness programs, screening & vaccinations, priz-

es, music, games and lunch. Over the past 17 years, FAME has dis-

tributed nearly 10,000 shoes and gift cards to students returning to

school.

SHOO THE FLU BRINGS FLU PROTECTION TO OAKLAND

STUDENTS

Oakland pre-K and elementary school students can get flu vaccines this fall at no cost at school through “Shoo the Flu”, a program to reduce

flu in the community. Shoo the Flu is a partnership of the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD), California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), funded by the Page Family Foundation. “School based flu vaccine programs are one of the best ways to protect against the flu in the community,” said Erica Pan, MD, MPH, Director of the Division of Com-municable Disease Control and Prevention at Alameda County Public Health Department. “Students can spread the flu quickly. Though it’s recom-mended for all children over six months, less than half of young chil-dren in Alameda County were vac-cinated during the last few flu sea-sons. For more information contact:
