Our Mission The Maryland Agricultural Resource Council is organized for the benefit of the citizens of Maryland to enhance the rural economy and to foster conservation of agricultural and natural resources through educational and technical services.

Our History In 2003, a group of committed farmers dreamed of developing a hub of agricultural research, education and innovation in Baltimore County. On the eve of mortgaging the farm to purchase the land that would form the foundation of this collective dream, Baltimore County stepped in as a major partner providing state and federal funds necessary to secure the 149 acre parcel of land and construct an office complex designed to serve as a central clearinghouse for all agricultural services in the area. Those committed farmers along with staff and volunteers through the non-profit Maryland Agricultural Resource Council (MARC) are now working to develop the programs and projects that will help to ensure not only a healthy, but a vibrant agricultural economic future for Maryland.

Message from the President On the following pages, not only in pictures, videos, graphics and narrative, I am pleased to report that the Maryland Agricultural Resource Council (MARC) had a year of growth focused on our mission. Rebuilding our finances and concentrating on our educational efforts were the Board’s priorities. We achieved both of these goals!

In the early spring, it was announced that a covered indoor arena and therapeutic riding facility would become a reality (see page 14) on this property. We are rapidly moving forward with these projects and look forward to their completion.

Without a very active Board of Directors, past Board members and volunteers, we could not have achieved as much as we did in 2014. Strong committees are an integral part of our overall focus and success. Staff work tirelessly to develop and present educational programs. I am grateful to Bronwyn Mitchell for this as our Director of Programs.

For the future, please keep us in mind in three ways: monetarily, volunteering and spreading the good news.

Farm History Projects

Root cellars literally fueled the growth of the U.S. Their stored food fed people, livestock and the economy. They were the first refrigerators. Using the insulating properties of the soil, food stored in a root cellar stayed cool in the summer, reducing spoilage, and kept above freezing in the winter, again preserving the food. By the middle of the 19th century, people were also using root cellars to store crops for market until the middle of winter when they would bring higher prices. And some root cellars were used to hide fugitive slaves as stops on the Underground Railroad. This restoration project will not only allow visitors to the park to take a peek back in time – for some it will be a glimpse into the future. There is a modern root cellar resurgence happening throughout the U.S.

The oldest remaining building at the Baltimore County Ag Center and Farm Park, a double-sided corn crib has been restored through an initiative spearheaded by Gene Swackhammer with help from Jody Westerlund, the skilled craftsmen of SsK Builders, area Boy Scouts, and other volunteers. The crib dates to the 1930's when the mechanization period of agriculture was expanding, and hand cut fodder shocks and field and on-ground storage was being replaced by above ground cribs with flow- through air ventilation to keep the moisture content of the grain at 14 percent or lower for long-term storability. While the era of the double-sided corn crib with its central drive through for wagons is now history, this corn crib remains for all to love for years to come.

Art On The Farm Art on the Farm aims to explore the Intersection of Art and Agriculture. It is an on-going multi-faceted, multi-media suite of programs designed to inspire creativity utilizing agriculture themes and landscapes as both muse and canvas.

The Barn Mural Project Plans for the mural project began in the summer of 2013, when the Ag-Center was selected as the next location for the University of Maryland's Art and Poetry in Rural Maryland project. Internationally recognized artists Bill Dunlap and Caleb Neelon worked hand-in-hand with students from Hereford High School, to transform a barn at the into a work of art.

Plein Air Workshop and Paint Out Day In partnership with Baltimore County Public Schools, art teachers attended a plein air (painting outdoors) workshop at the farm taught by Mike Bare. To make things more interesting, the general public was also invited, making for a lively mix. Using the farm as their muse, they spent the day interpreting the agricultural landscape, buildings, and even live nude models (4-legged). Now that the teachers know about the Farm Park, the hope is that they will return and bring their students.

Art AG-stravaganza In partnership with the Baltiore County Arts Guild, the Farm became an art gallery, a restaurant, concert hall and a canvas. Over 60 local artists were on hand showing and selling their wares. Area food trucks kept tummies full. Bands kept feet tapping while many visitors tried their hand at art using chalk and the sidewalk.

Farm Camp While there seemed to be a summer day camp dedicated to everything from legos to Latin dancing, in the greater Baltimore region, at least, there were no farm themed camps. MARC set out to fill that void – and with a bevvy of partners – Farm Camp was born. Each day the campers were introduced to different aspects of the multi-faceted industry we call agriculture including, farm safety, basic gardening, bees, goats, rabbits, chickens, horses, eggs, canning, and even tractor driving. No camp would be complete without its share of fun games and crafts, and Farm Camp was no exception. Campers competed in farm Olympics as well as other farm themed games and physical activities such as farm yoga - and went home every day with something they made with their own two hands like a salad box, goat's milk fudge, seed bombs, and homemade peach jam.

"This was, by far, my son’s favorite camp of the summer. His experience was incredible. The counselor to child ratio was perfect. I would not suggest going much larger with group size as the hands on experience may get lost. It was so wonderful to have our son come home and talk about all of the exciting activities that he was part of AND all of the incredible knowledge that he took away. Granted, we are not going out and adopting a pig or a goat…at this time OR making a bee hive, but we are embracing the excitement and encouraging the continued exploration into agriculture, farming and nature."

Farm Camp is a partnership that drew on the expertise and contributions of many within the local agricultural community including UMD Extension, the Baltimore County 4-H Goat and Rabbit Clubs, Timberbrook Farm, the Central Maryland Beekeepers Association, Master Gardeners, Finch Inc., Greenfields Nursery, as well as committed volunteers. MARC is so grateful to everyone who played a role in the success of this endeavor.

Recreational Trail Improvements

WAYFARING SIGN PROJECT

Thanks to Eagle Scout Candidate Jack Olson and his hardy team of volunteers, it will be harder to lose your way while exploring the 149 acre Farm Park. Working with trail experts, the MARC Board and Baltimore County Parks and Recreation, Jack selected appropriate sites for the wayfaring signs, helped design the signs, raised money for the purchase of the signs, and organized a work day to install the signs.

OLD OAK PICNIC GROVE

Thanks to Eagle Scout Candidate, Will McKay, visitors to the Park now have a place to relax and enjoy a picnic. Just off the Sugar Maple trail lies a grove of what Bob Stanhope, local tree expert, says to be some of the oldest white oaks in Baltimore County. With guidance and support from the MARC Board and Baltimore County Parks and Recreation, Will organized work days and raised money necessary to remove under brush, lay mulch, repair and paint old picnic tables and purchase new picnic tables

SPRING GARDEN WALKWAY

Thanks to Eagle Scout Candidate, Michael “Gibby” Gibson, visitors to the spring garden and soon to be restored root cellar won’t have to get their feet wet. Gibby organized a work crew to construct a trail spur connecting the Root Cellar to the Spring Garden.

Crop Production 1st Harvest in 60 Years Exceeds Expectations On October 31, 2014, a smoky haze rose from the fields as the combines churned through the fields harvesting the first significant crops planted at 1114 Shawan Road in Cockeysville, since the 1950’s. Never in the history of the farm had such machinery rolled through its fields. For the majority of its existence, all crops grown were harvested by hand.

And what a harvest it was. The yields exceeded MARC’s expectations. Fallow fields typically have very low yields due to lack of nutrient input. On average, MARC realized 195 bushels/acre in corn and 27.9 bushels/acre in soybeans – which translated into $21,000 of gross revenue to help support programming.

No responsible harvest would be complete without overplanting with cover crops. MARC is proud to report that all 40 acres have been seeded with rye to help control erosion. None of this would have been possible without the Lippy Brothers Inc. donation of machinery and manpower. All of the revenue derived from the sale of these crops will be used to fuel MARC’s ever-growing suite of agricultural education initiatives.

Let’s Build an Indoor Agricultural Arena The Master Plan developed in 2010 calls for the construction of a multi-purpose indoor agricultural arena. The plans for the Arena provide approximately 37,500 + sq. ft. of year round covered space for farm, equine organizations, and the industries that serve them. Potential users of the Arena may include trade shows of farm animals, agricultural products, farm fairs, 4-H events, horse shows, sheep herding, training, etc.

Baltimore County has pledged $1 million dollars towards this goal – tasking MARC to raise the balance. To that end, MARC has secured a matching grant of $200,000 from the Baltimore County Farm Bureau – and raised nearly $150,000 from private donors by the end of 2014. 14

To be successful, a non-profit must have diversified sources of funding. Grants play an important role in funding specific projects. In 2014, MARC was awarded a total of $6,675 in grant funds.

Audit Report March 15, 2015 TO: The Honorable Board of Directors of the Maryland Agricultural Resource Council Our Mission is to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting service designed to add value and improve The Maryland Agricultural Resource Council’s operations. We work to help the organization to accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and the governance process. In the performance of our oversight responsibilities, the Audit Committee met on February 18, 2015 in MARC offices to review and discuss the financial statements and related information as of December 31, 2014. President Dick Watson and Program Manager Bronwyn Mitchell were present and assisted in a highly cooperative manner during our review. The following information was reviewed as per the audit plan outlined in an email dated February 18, 2015 to the President and Treasurer. 1. Review of all current insurance policies to include D&O liability; insurance policy on equipment and Family Farm Day .policy. 2. Audit/review of Director and Officer Annual Conflict of Interest Statements. 3. Review/ audit a sample ( 7-10 ) of journal entries in QuickBooks from journalized entry to appropriate account ; verify

disbursements for check signatory and appropriate documentation ( invoices) ; deposits to be verified by copy of bank deposit slip. Reconcile bank account balance 12-31-2014 with Quickbooks balance.

4. Review policies for check signing authority and signature cards. 5. Review/audit deposits in Arena (restricted ) bank account . 6. Inspect file location of critical document storage. We conducted our audit in accordance with standards which require that we perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free of material misstatements. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion. In our opinion , the financial statements and information referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Maryland Agricultural Resource Council as of December 31, 2014 and its changes in net assets and cash flow for the year then ended .
