FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND CEO

Dear friends,

To say that 2014 was a historic year for Alive Hospice

would be an understatement.

In those 12 months, we served more patients than we

ever have in a single year. We received approval from

the State of Tennessee to build a free-standing hospice

residence in Murfreesboro, marking an expansion in our

services. It was also a groundbreaking year for the Alive

Institute, which will become a nationally renowned center

for education, research and advocacy for end-of-life care.

We started two new events: Bluebird In The Boro and the

O. L. Shultz Regatta. We expanded our music program

with our first-ever certified music therapist. We launched

our Pet Peace of Mind program, which helps ensure that

our patients’ pets have quality of life, too, thanks to Alive

Hospice volunteers who assist with basic necessities

such as veterinary visits, grooming appointments, food

and pet supplies.

We also took time to celebrate something remarkable:

On Nov. 14, 2014, we kicked off our 40th year of

service. That is an incredible milestone that reminds us

of how far we’ve come since those early, grassroots days

when we had $58 in the treasury. It reminds us of the

impact we’ve made over the last four decades; in that

time, we’ve served more than 50,000 patients and their

families here in Middle Tennessee. And as we stop to

think about the lives we’ve touched, we also look ahead

to the future.

The need for exceptional end-of-life care and grief

support services will only continue to grow, and Alive

Hospice will be here to meet that need in Tennessee.

Thank you for your support that helps make it possible.

HOSPICE CAREEmbrace Life

IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTHWe are fond of saying that Alive Hospice is not

about death and dying, but rather about living life

to the fullest in the last months of life. We’re about

living life to the fullest in the last months of life.

For Danielle Elliston, 22, that meant marrying

her sweetheart, Ben Montgomery. Surrounded

by family and friends at Alive Hospice Residence

Nashville on a Sunday afternoon in October 2014,

they sealed their vows with a kiss and made their

way to a beautiful reception fit for the occasion. It

was a day of celebration – their day.

OUTREACH & EDUCATIONService to the Community

The Alive Institute is the fulfilment of our founders’ vision for “a community-oriented center for

services and education related to life-threatening illness.” We’ve long been regarded as one of

the nation’s premiere providers of hospice care, and through the Alive Institute, we will become

synonymous with names like Duke and Johns Hopkins as THE authority

for knowledge and information on the end of life locally and nationwide.

2014 was a ground-breaking year for the Institute with the formation of

an Advisory Committee, collaborative partnerships, the addition of a new

director of education and more.

A LEADER IN EDUCATIONAlive Hospice welcomed a new director of

education in February 2014. Betsy Bond is a

longtime nurse and educator who has not only

expanded, but created new energy around

learning opportunities for Alive Hospice staff

and the community. Alive Hospice team

members are equipped for clinical excellence

now more than

ever before. Alive

Hospice is on the

Cedar Society | Gifts of $2,500 - $4,999

The Oak Tree is symbolic of courage. It takes courage to face each day amid a terminal illness or the loss of a loved one. Comfort, security and love combine to give courage when it’s needed most, and each of these can be found in abundance at Alive Hospice.

The Hickory Tree is symbolic of endurance. Terminally ill patients and families face one of the most difficult journeys there is, and loving care from Alive Hospice caregivers does so much to hearten their spirits each day.

The Cedar Tree is symbolic of healing. It is our sacred that belief that, although one does not find a cure at the end of life, one can find healing of the heart, mind and soul.
