Here is just a sampling of what you can enjoy in this vibrant urban paradise:

• Dine at any of the fabulous downtown restaurants, many featuring celebrity chefs.

• Lounge at an outside café in Little Italy with a cup of cappuccino and watch the people go by.

• Tour Petco Park, where the San Diego Padres play.

• View the “Urban Trees” sculptures along San Diego’s Embarcadero.

• Explore the ships at the USS Midway Museum.

With legendary weather, beautiful beaches, and a friendly, laid-back vibe, San Diego is a destination that you won’t want to miss. Learn more about the city and upcoming events at SanDiego.org.

Preconference IntensivesNew this year, four full-day preconference workshops will offer deeper dives specifically targeted to your needs.

• Hospice Medical Directors Review Course. Prepare for the first Hospice Medical Director Certification exam scheduled for May 2014. This intensive review is based on the exam blueprint (www.hmdcb.org). The course also serves as a great orientation for those new to the hospice field or as a critical update for all hospice practitioners and managers. Featured faculty include Heather Wilson, PhD; Kathleen Faulkner, MD FAAHPM; Joy Berry, MEd RN LNC; and Edward Martin, MD.

• Addressing Goals of Care: Intensive Small Group Training. Based on the respected and popular OncoTalk and PalliTalk model, this session will include a mix of short didactic presentations and experiential practice with trained actors. Esteemed faculty include Robert Arnold, MD FAAHPM, Anthony Back, MD, and James Tulsky, MD FAAHPM FACP, who will be joined by a team of facilitators to help participants develop a communication model for handling the difficult conversations that are common for hospice and palliative care clinicians. Space is limited, so register early!

• Physician Engagement and Communication. For system integration to work, physicians must support and engage in a collaborative organizational structure and culture. This session, presented by Jim Beeson, MD, will require attendees to examine systems that result in physician loyalty and discover effective techniques to manage difficult physician behaviors. Participants will learn how to create accountable leadership structures, train physicians to execute an organizational vision, appreciate forms of communication in organizations, and understand what better performers do to engage their physicians.

• APRN Certification Preparation Review. The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) supports nurses looking to advance their professional development and career with specialty certification. This course will review concepts of the content areas based on the NBCHPN® detailed test content outline to assist the advanced practice nurse in self-identifying topics that require further preparation and study for the specialty certification examination.

Required Text: Core Curriculum for the Advanced Practice Nurse—order online from the HPNA Specialty Shoppe

Educational ForumsThese hour-long sessions will feature educational forums with unique content geared toward public policy and advocacy and the practice of palliative medicine in developing countries presented by the Developing Countries Scholarship recipients. Plan to participate in these informative “extras.”

Research ConsultationSign up on site for a time to meet with a member of the AAHPM or HPNA Research Committees or Scientific Subcommittee who will help you

• work on your draft abstract for future submissions

• tighten specific aims of a proposed study

• review the outline of a draft manuscript

• consider next steps in your program of research.

Billing and Coding ConsultationDue to overwhelming demand, Jean Acevedo, LHRM CPC CHC CENTC, of Acevedo Consulting Incorporated, will provide brief sessions available to all on common billing and coding issues during the Annual Assembly in addition to offering individual consultations. Take advantage of having access to one of the most respected experts in the field during your time in San Diego.
