Academic Summary and Course Entry LevelsTeaching Methodology

BBSI’s aims are to encourage students’ responsibility for their own learning, and to develop their language within real-life contexts.

In general English courses the emphasis is on improving language skills across allfour skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) with an emphasis on effectivecommunication. These courses offer a blended learning approach; classroomteaching includes the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) on our Moodleplatform, myBBSI. This allows students the flexibility to access a wide range of activities to meet their needs and interests, both in school and at home. The VLEalso enables our teachers to closely monitor progress and to provide targeted work to challenge and support each individual student.

On specialised courses, students learn about key language, concepts and theorieswithin their subject through the medium of English. Students are able to focus onlearning the terms, study skills and communication skills that will help them in theircareer or in higher education. The emphasis is on learner independence, which involves the students in research and collaborative tasks both inside and outsidethe classroom, strengthened by a bank of course materials and study support onour VLE, myBBSI. Those who choose to progress to university have the advantageof academic study skills, as well as specific knowledge about their studying subject,to put them ahead of their peers.
