a look aT The aMeriCan aThleTiC ConferenCeNot entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence.

With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 2014-15 consists of 11 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida, Southern Meth-odist University, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa.

The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only.

Under the leadership of commissioner Mike Aresco, The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, has immediate-ly taken a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with schools that have played in four Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won nine NCAA women’s basket-ball championships since 1995.

Two American Athletic Conference football teams were ranked in the top 15 of the final 2013 Associated Press poll. Five were selected for bowl games, including UCF, which won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and finished the season ranked No. 10 nationally. The conference produced 14 play-ers who received All-America recognition by a major outlet.

The American had four players chosen in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, trailing only the SEC and the ACC among FBS conferences. UCF quarterback Blake Bortles highlighted a group of 12 American Athletic Conference players chosen when he was taken No. 3 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The success of The American in Year 1 was not limited to the gridiron. UConn won NCAA titles in both men’s and women’s basketball. The conference had the best postseason winning percentage of any league in men’s basketball, while The American produced top-10 teams in base-ball, men’s soccer and men’s golf and sent half of its participating teams to the NCAA Softball Championship.

The American Athletic Conference holds television partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which will give the conference unprecedented na-tional exposure. The football portion of the contract, which begins in the 2014 season, calls for nearly 90 percent of conference-controlled games on national broadcast or national cable platforms. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which will be played in 2015, will be carried either on ABC or ESPN on Championship Saturday.

In men’s basketball, the television deal calls for all conference-controlled games to be televised, with more than 63 percent slotted for national broadcast or national cable – a minimum of 107 games. The entire postseason tournament will be televised, including the championship game, which will be either on ABC or ESPN. Sixty percent of the Ameri-can’s women’s basketball games will be carried on either national cable, regional sports networks or ESPN3.

American Athletic Conference teams will have access to the pinnacle of college football’s postseason structure. An American representative would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams following the regular season. Otherwise, the league would place its champion in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl if it is ranked higher than the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference.

Additionally, The American has announced primary or secondary part-nerships with 12 bowls for the next six-year cycle, ensuring multiple annual matchups against the nation’s top conferences and providing desirable postseason destinations to member institutions and their fans.

The American Athletic Conference administers to its membership from a state-of-the-art office located in Providence, R.I. The location of the conference headquarters – just steps from the city’s Amtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green International Airport – gives the conference easy access to its member schools.

The conference headquarters is equipped with a complete video pro-duction studio, serving as the home of the American Digital Network, and small- and large-scale meeting rooms to accommodate the many coaches’ and administrators’ meetings held on-site each year.

The UConn men’s 2014 indoor team (pictured left) won the inaugeral American Athletic Conference Indoor crown in mid-March.

Greg Royhead Coach

30th overall season

Greg Roy, University of Connecticut men’s track and field head coach, enters the 2014-15 season with a skillful group of young returners and a talented incoming class that will continue his winning traditions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Roy enters his 30th season as the head coach of the men’s cross country team and his 26th season at the helm of the track and field program. Year by year, he has been able to elevate a national caliber program to prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. His squads have won eleven conference track and field titles. He has also produced 32 All-Americans during his time at UConn, including 2014 graduate Eric Masington.

Throughout his career at UConn, Roy has established a solid founda-tion for the cross country and track and field programs. With top notch indoor and outdoor facilities, the program has the tools to match the ambitions that Roy and his Huskies set out to reach each year.

In 2013-14, Roy led the Huskies to the inaugural American Athletic Con-ference indoor title, also earning recognition from the league when he and his staff were named the Coaching Staff of the Year.

Under Roy, the Huskies posted a solid 2011-12 campaign with Jake Waruch and Noel James each bringing home indoor and outdoor Big East Crowns. Behind James’ outdoor and indoor high jump titles and Waruch’s decathlon and heptathlon titles, UConn finished fourth at the outdoor conference meet and second at the indoor. Additionally, the team won its seventh consecutive New England Championship.

Roy guided the Huskies to one of their best seasons in 2010-11 as UConn earned both Indoor and Outdoor Big East Championships along with claiming the triple crown of the indoor season with the Big East title, New England and IC4A crowns. Roy was named the Northeast Region Indoor Track And Field Coach of the Year after UConn’s success. The Huskies saw Mike Rutt earn All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor seasons under Roy’s leadership. In addition to Rutt, nine Huskies qualified for the Outdoor NCAA East Regional. Roy and his staff were named the 2011 Big East Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.

During the 2009-10 campaign, Roy led his team to six first place finish-es, including a fifth straight victory at the New England Indoor Champi-onship and the first ever title for the Huskies at the IC4A Outdoor Cham-pionship. Following the 2010 outdoor season, Roy sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship, marking the first time since 2004 that the UConn men’s team had more than one athlete at the event, with Michael Rutt, Brian Gagnon and Sean Smith representing the Huskies. For the 16th time, and second straight year, Roy had one of his athletes named the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Performer, as Smith took home the honors of Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer for his accomplish-ments during the conference Championship.

In 2008-09, Roy earned the first back-to-back Big East Titles during his tenure as head coach when the track and field team won the 2009 Indoor Big East Championship. For his efforts, Roy and his coaching staff were honored with the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year award for the second season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career.

Roy produced three All-Americans in the indoor season as Mi-chael Rutt and Brian Gagnon earned their second All-America honors in the 800-meter run and Marquis Thomas was named an All-American in the high jump. Roy also took home USTFC-CCA honors for the fourth time as he was named the North-east Indoor Track Coach of the year following his successful 2009 Indoor season.

During the 2007-08 season, UConn won the Big East Indoor Championship and fell only 17.5 points shy of taking the Outdoor title as well. During the 2008 seasons, Roy coached

six of his athletes to eight Big East individual titles. For his efforts, he was rewarded for the fourth time in his career with the title of Big East Indoor Staff of the Year. UConn continued on its hot streak after the Big East Championships and under the direction of Roy, won its 14th New England Championship in the last 15 years qualifying three of its athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

In 2006-07, UConn was unable to win a Big East Championship but instead won the Sorlein Invitational, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the Harvard Select Meet and the New England Championship. Roy was able to guide Jake Radzevich to two pole vault individual championships, Sean Berg to an individual championship in the heptathlon, Gagnon to the title in the outdoor 800-meter run, Andrew Dubs to an outdoor shot put victory and his 4 x 100m team to a relay championship. During the indoor season, Roy was named New England Coach of the Year.

During the 2005-06 season, UConn won its fifth Big East Indoor Champi-onship in school history, fourth under the direction of Roy and the third in the last five years. Roy also guided the Huskies to a pair of first place finishes and a 13-1 overall record during the outdoor season as well. Under Roy’s tutelage, seven Huskies were selected to compete in the NCAA Regionals following outstanding performances in the regular sea-son. Senior Joel Lagare, one of the NCAA Regional finalists, finished third in the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time under Roy. Sean Berg also appeared in his first NCAA Championships as the junior competed in the decathlon and finished in 18th place.

In the 2004-05 season, the Huskies saw success across the board while some of the program’s greatest talents suffered injuries. Will Thomas advanced to the NCAA Championship in the decathlon for the fourth-consecutive sea-son, but was injured during the competition and could not finish. UConn finished in ninth place at the Big East Indoor Champion-ship, with numerous athletes scoring points in different events. The Huskies also finished in a tie for seventh at the New England Cham-pionship. Outdoors, UConn finished fifth at the Big East Cham-pionship and third at New Englands. With Roy’s assistance, Ellis Gaulden and Thomas both advanced to the NCAA Regionals, with Gaulden competing in the high jump.

Roy’s squad captured its fourth Big East Indoor Championship in 2003-2004, its second in three years and won an 11th-straight New England Championship. The team took second at the IC4A Championship and saw two of its members take home All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship as Will Thomas finished fourth in the heptathlon to become a three-time All-American and Logan Jones earned All-America honors in the 800-meter run. The Huskies took third at the Outdoor Big East Championship and Paul Pisano became the first-ever three-time javelin champion. Joel Legare earned All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800-meter.

In 2002-2003, Roy produced four All-Americans for the second consecu-tive year. Will Thomas earned the honor for a second time in the decath-lon, placing second at the NCAA Championship. Thrower Paul Pisano also earned All-America status for the second straight year, as did Joe Mendel in the sprints. Mike Deibler earned his first All-America honor by plac-ing eighth in the high jump. The indoor and outdoor teams took home second-place at both the Big East Indoor and Outdoor Championship. Indoors, UConn saw its usual success at the New England Championship, bringing home their 10th consecutive title.

The 2001-02 season was one of the most successful in Roy’s career. His indoor and outdoor squads took home both of the Big East Championships and Roy, for the eighth consecutive year, had his athletes reach All-Ameri-can status as four athletes were awarded the honor. Dan Wilson garnered All-America status three times to become the first five-time All-American in UConn history. Wilson finished 14th at the NCAA cross country champion-ship, eighth in the indoor mile run and registered the fifth All-America title at the outdoor track and field championship, finishing ninth in the 1,500 meter run. Joe Mendel finished among the top eight in the indoor 400-me-ter dash to claim the honor, while Paul Pisano and Will Thomas earned their All-America status at the outdoor championship. Pisano earned a 12th place finish in the javelin and Thomas competed in the decathlon, finishing eighth with a then school record 7,630 points. In addition, the team successfully defended the New England Indoor Championship title.

Along with a pair of New England titles in 1999-2000, Roy led the Huskies to an overall record of 21-1, a runner-up performance at the BIG EAST Outdoors and a third-place finish at the indoor edition of the meet. During the indoor season, four more All-Americans were added to the school list as the distance medley relay team of Haven Barnes, Elliott Blount, Kevin Jensen and Dan Wilson finished fourth at the NCAA national championship with a time of 9:33.85. Roy added to his list of achievements by being selected by his peers as the United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year following both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

The first 14 years as the Head Coach of the Husky track squad began the tradition of excellence that Roy thrives for today. Starting in 1990, the Husky squad began their dominance in both New England and NCAA com-petition. Over the next eight years, Roy produced his fifth and sixth cross country All-Americans in Andy Ball (1990) and Travis Landreth (1998) as well as mentored four-time All-American hurdler Dudley Dorival who went on to compete in the Olympics for Haiti in 2000 and 2004, weight thrower Steve Santoli (1998) and thrower Ray Wilks (1999). Roy’s squads finished 81-5-1 in dual meets from 1995 to 1999 for an outstanding .934 win per-centage and won their second Indoor BIG EAST Championship. Before the start of the 1999-2000 season, Roy had accrued five NCAA Coach of the Year awards (1990-Cross Country, 1993-94-Indoor, 1995-96 Outdoor, 1996-97 Indoor and 1998-99 Indoor) as well as, with his staff, back-to-back BIG EAST Staff of the Year awards (1995-96-Outdoor, 1996-97-In-door).

In 1990, Roy brought his cross country squad into the national spotlight, finishing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division I National Championship meet while also winning the IC4A Championship. UConn ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation.

A native of East Brunswick, N.J., Roy earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1978, where he held the school record in the 220 and 440-yard runs. He added a master’s degree in Sport Manage-ment from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1982 and worked as the assistant track and cross country coach from 1981-83 during his time at UMass.

Roy lives in Lebanon, Conn. with his wife, Natalie, their daughter Kathryn, is studying nursing at Chamberlain College, and son Michael is a junior on the UConn track and field team.

Miller has produced three All-Americans during his time at UConn in Paul Pisano, Will Thomas and Eric Masington. Pisa-no earned the accolade during the 2002 and 2003 seasons in the javelin, while Thomas was named an All-American following his performance in the heptathlon during 2004 and the decathlon in 2002 and 2003. Masington was tabbed an All-American following the 2014 campaign.

Prior to joining the Huskies full-time, Miller was employed as a physical therapist with Health South/PTSMA in Storrs. While at Health South, Miller provided direct patient care in an outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine clinic while also collaborating with local physicians on implementing treatment plans to rehabilitate patients with a variety of ailments. Miller also served as a member of the Big East Track and Field

seeding committee.

Miller, who was a 1995 UConn graduate, enjoyed both academic and athletic success during his undergraduate years. He served as co-captain of UConn’s track and field teams in both his junior and senior years, two years in which the Huskies won back-to-back New England Indoor Championships.

He was a four-time All-East performer in the de-cathlon while

also earning All-New England and All-Big East honors in the pentathlon and pole vault events. His academic achieve-ments set a standard of excellence for all stu-dent-athletes, as he was a member of the 1994-95 Big East Conference Academic All-Star team and was named a UConn Club Outstanding Schol-ar-Athlete in 1995.

A native of Cresskill, N.J., Miller attended Cresskill High School where he lettered in soccer, basketball and track. He resides in Storrs, Conn. with his wife, Dorinda, daughter, Emily and son, Caden.

Moose AkannoAssistant Coach/Cross Country

CoachFirst Season

Moose Akanno comes to UConn after having spent the past four seasons serving as an assistant coach for the Dartmouth women’s track and field program.

Akanno returns to Storrs after serving as an undergraduate assistant coach at UConn in 2009, where he was primarily responsible for organizing practice schedules and training programs for different groups, while coordinating recruiting for sprints, hurdles and jumps. Prior to coaching, he was a four-year letter-winner for Connecticut and was a part of the Husky track teams that won three indoor Big East Championships, as well as three New England Championships.

While at UConn, Akanno was part of the Big East Conference Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009 after winning the Indoor Championship.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Akanno back to Storrs,” said Roy. “A great team player, competitor, and leader as an athlete, Moose has paid his dues in the coaching profession. There was never a doubt that he’d succeed. We are thrilled he has come home.”

During his time with the Big Green, Akanno has helped guide several individuals to record-setting performances and Heptag-onal Championships. His former student-athletes on the wom-en’s side have broken records in high jump, long jump, triple jump, pentathlon as well as sprint hurdles during both indoor and outdoor seasons.

He has also helped to elevate the men’s jumps to new heights with numerous program records and top-five showings by several student-athletes under his guidance.

2013-14 indoor/ouTdoor season reviewFresh off of indoor and outdoor conference championships in the former Big East in 2013, UConn men’s track and field carried over its winning ways into the newly formed American Athletic Conference in the 2013-14 season. The Huskies graduated 18 seniors in 2013 but, through significant contributions from the entire team and solid senior leadership, posted a successful 2014 campaign.

A full team effort propelled a young UConn team to capture the inaugural American Athletic Conference Indoor Championship on Mar. 1 in New York City. The Huskies entered the final day of competition in third place but received points from 27 of the 32 competing athletes. Freshman Mike O’Donnell raced to a top finish in the mile run with a time of 4:13.21 and the 4x400m team concluded the meet with a win in 3:14.23. Connecticut finished with 158 points to top Louisville (123 points) and handily claim the first-ever conference championship in The American.

The Huskies would go on to finish third in a tightly contested meet at The American’s Outdoor Championship, led again by O’Donnell in the 1,500m and senior captain Eric Masington in the discus. O’Donnell owned the top 1,500m time in the conference prior to the meet and finished the same way, clocking 3:53.66 to win gold. Masington collected his first-ever individual conference title with a 57.80m throw.

Masington went on to make history when he became the first UConn discus thrower and ninth Husky thrower to earn All-

American honors at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Facing stiff competition that included the best throwers in the country, Masington shined on the biggest stage of his career in his first appearance at Nationals. The senior dug deep and delivered a career-best throw of 59.19m (194-2.00) to capture seventh place and earn First Team All-American laurels.

Joining Masington as an All-American was Alvaro Chavez, who was the lone Husky that qualified to compete in

the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championship. Chavez competed in Albuquerque in the 800m run, finishing in ninth place and narrowly missing the finals by four one hundredths of a second (.04) with a time of 1:50.83. The performance earned him Second Team All-American honors. On Feb. 11, Chavez was named The American’s Track Athlete of the Week after posting a personal-best time of 1:47.96 at the Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup. His efforts were good for a silver medal and what was then the third-fastest time in the country.

Five Huskies qualified for NCAA East Regional in the outdoor season, led by Masington in the discus. Rookie pole vaulter Craig Hunter concluded his stellar freshman campaign at the East Regional after placing 23rd in an experienced field that included just seven freshmen. Though early in his career, Hunter has already established himself as one of the top pole vaulters in UConn history. He twice cleared a height of 5.30m (17-04.50) to establish a new school record win gold at both the New England Championship and the IC4A Championship this spring.

Along with Hunter, three other Huskies made their debuts at the NCAA East Regional. Junior javelin thrower Brian Eilers earned a trip to his first-ever NCAA Regional, along with teammates Robert Rhodes and Chinedu Amonu in the 800m and 400m runs, respectively.

UConn posted a pair of second place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor IC4A Championship. Jesse Chapman captured the decathlon and Craig Hunter won the pole vault to pace the team to a runner-up finish in the outdoor championship while Robert Rhodes earned gold in the 500m to pace UConn’s second place finish at the indoor championship. Rhodes was recognized as the American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 21 after winning the 500m dash at the Great Dane Classic to help the Huskies win their fourth consecutive Great Dane Classic.

Other season highlights included dominant wins at both the Great Dane Classic and the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational, but a victory over nationally-ranked No. 7 Penn State on its home track at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup marks one of the best accomplishments of the indoor season.

Top finishes from Darnell Cummings in the 60m dash and the Connecticut distance medley relay team had the Huskies poised and ready in third place entering the final day of competition. A dominant UConn effort in the 400m saw the Huskies sweep the top three finishes, led by Chinedu Amonu in first, Kyle Twombly in second and Robert Hovanec in third. A win by Robert Rhodes in the 600m and an impressive effort by Alvaro Chavez in the 800m helped the Huskies defeat the Nittany Lions in what head coach Greg Roy called “a huge team win over a great Penn State team.”

Commenting on the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup, Coach Roy pointed out the importance of individual contributions to team success, which fittingly captures UConn’s 2014 season.
