2013-14 Men’s Track & Field 3

2013-14 SEASON OUTLOOKIt is fi tting that UConn enters a new conference the year after graduating 18 seniors. The American Athletic Conference presents a far different set of challenges in both Track and Field and Cross Coun-try than the Big East, and provides a whole new set of opportunities as well. The loss of 18 seniors creates the same scenario, a number challenges in the areas of leadership and competition that pro-vide opportunity for a whole new group of leaders and competitors to emerge. Moving forward, look no further than the SPRINTS AND HURDLES for both of those qualities.

Senior/redshirt junior Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) is a leader on and off the track. A Big East Champion in the 60m, his best event may be the 200m. His peers recognized his leadership abilities by electing him captain. Selwyn Maxwell, Jr. (Mon-roe, N.Y.) was an All-Conference selection in the 110HH last spring, and has made huge strides in adapting to a new starting technique. His leader-ship will be critical as he battles to come back from a bout with mononucleosis and master his new technique. Backups in both areas are young and unproven, but exhibit potential. Redshirt fresh-man TJ Elliott (Harrisburg, Pa.) and true freshmen Patrick Hayes (Walpole, Mass.) and Jared Delane (Windsor, Conn.) will back up Cummings while Ran-dall Wall (Plainfi eld, N.J.) attempts to adapt to the 3” height differential to give Maxwell some backup in the HH. Senior Kyle Twombly (Penfi eld, N.Y.) scored in the 400m last spring and is the unspo-ken leader of the deepest group on the team, the 400m. From this group will come the 400 Hurdlers as well, with no clear favorite for that event as of yet. Freshman Chinedu Amonu (Ewing, N.J.) was an All-American in high school and has range down to the 60m dash, while Rob Hovanec (Gillette, N.J.) tries to prove his surprising success (46.6 relay car-ry) was no fl uke. Upperclassmen John Rettenmeier (Sherman, Conn.), Dele Owoye (Danbury, Conn.) and Justin Doehr (Wallingford, Conn.) provide able back up to a group with an avowed goal to have the best 4 x 400 in school history.

While the MULTI EVENTS might be expected to struggle with the loss of the Waruch twins, Ben

and Jake, NCAA Decathlon qualifi er Jess Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) is back for the outdoor season, and co-captains Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Sean Walsh (Freehold, N.J.) will handle the indoor season more than capably. Sophomores Kris Horn (Pembroke, Mass.) and Pat Meyer (Hamlin, N.Y.) will do more than add depth, as Meyer, an indoor fi nalist in the HH will make his conference multi-events debut, while Horn is one of the most prom-ising multi-eventers to arrive in Storrs in some time.

The JUMPS constitute one of the youngest groups on the whole team, with senior captain Cory Dug-gan (Staten Island, N.Y.), an All-Conference pole vaulter and the only senior in the group. A prom-ising group of horizontal jumpers is led by junior Amanze Williams (New Haven, Conn.), with a strong push from Harley LaCroix (Elkins Park, Pa.). Sophomore John Landis (Philadelphia, Pa.) com-peted in the USA Junior Nationals, and if healthy, could top the group. Veteran high jumper Toby Belton, (Westminster, Mass.) a junior, returns from

a devastating Achilles tendon injury and will have to fi ght off freshman DeMario Gray (Bloomfi eld, Conn.), seven-foot tall athlete from nearby Bloom-fi eld High School. Duggan has a great supporting cast, including High School All-American Craig Hunter (Robbinsville, N.J.) and sophomores Tim Murphy (New Fairfi eld, Conn.), a conference scor-er, and Connor Grunwald (Neshanic Station, N.J.).

The 800m, a traditional UConn strong suit will be led by sophomores AJ Chavez (West Windsor, N.J.) and Robert Rhodes (Brooklyn, N.Y.), both conference scorers as yearlings. Rhodes was named All-Conference in the 800m as a freshman and Chavez anchored the conference champion 4 x 800 relay team. Senior Paul DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.), junior Phil Caldwell (Cheshire, Conn.), and redshirt sophomore Nick O’Leary (North Attleboro, Mass.) will be joined by promising rookie Justin Alleyne (Queens, N.Y.), who is a former basket-ball player.

The THROWS are led by senior captain Eric

Masington (Trevose, Pa.), star of the show for last year’s Big East Indoor Championship team, fi nishing in second and third places in the shot put and discus, respectively. Chris Ackell (Brook-fi eld, Conn.) narrowly missed All-Conference in the hammer, while classmate Oluwatosin Edwards (Windsor, Conn.) continues to develop as both a 35lb. weight thrower and hammer thrower. Brian Eilers, Adam Boucher and Multi Eventers Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) and Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) make up a formidable group in the javelin, with the event leader hoping to be in the 215 to 220m range.

Bryan Fowler (Tolland, Conn.) is a young leader who, when healthy, showed the ability to compete for wins from the Mile up. Best of the rest include highly touted freshman Mike O’Donnell (Methuen, Mass.), milers James Agati (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Alex Levine (Danbury, Conn.), and Virginia transfer Dave Cotton (Madison, Conn.). Develop-ment and success in this group will be critical to the success of the Track and Field team, as the distance events will not be nearly as competitive as in the Distance-centric former Big East Confer-ence.

Greg RoyHead Coach

29th Overall Season

Greg Roy, University of Connecticut men’s track and fi eld head coach, enters the 2013-14 season with a skillful group of young returners and a talented incoming class that will continue his winning traditions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Roy enters his 29th season as the head coach of the men’s cross country team and his 25th season at the helm of the track and fi eld program. Year by year, he has been able to elevate a national caliber program to prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. His squads have produced a remarkable 258-41-3 record in dual competitions during his tenure, along with ten Big East track and fi eld titles. He has also produced 31 All-Americans during his time at UConn, including 2011 graduate Husky Michael Rutt and 2013 Honorable Mention Jesse Chapman.

Throughout his career at UConn, Roy has established a solid founda-tion for the cross country and track and fi eld programs. With top notch indoor and outdoor facilities, the program has the tools to match the ambitions that Roy and his Huskies set out to reach each year.

Under Roy, the Huskies posted a solid 2011-12 campaign with Jake Waruch and Noel James each bringing home indoor and outdoor Big East Crowns. Behind James’ outdoor and indoor high jump titles and Waruch’s decathlon and heptathlon titles, UConn fi nished fourth at the outdoor conference meet and second at the indoor. Additionally, the team won its seventh consecutive New England Championship.

Roy guided the Huskies to one of their best seasons in 2010-11 as UConn earned both Indoor and Outdoor Big East Championships along with claiming the triple crown of the indoor season with the Big East title, New England and IC4A crowns. Roy was named the Northeast Region Indoor Track And Field Coach of the Year after UConn’s success. The Huskies saw Mike Rutt earn All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor seasons under Roy’s leadership. In addition to Rutt, nine Huskies qualifi ed for the Outdoor NCAA East Regional. Roy and his staff were named the 2011 Big East Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.

During the 2009-10 campaign, Roy led his team to six fi rst place fi nish-es, including a fi fth straight victory at the New England Indoor Champi-onship and the fi rst ever title for the Huskies at the IC4A Outdoor Cham-pionship. Following the 2010 outdoor season, Roy sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship, marking the fi rst time since 2004 that the UConn men’s team had more than one athlete at the event, with Michael Rutt, Brian Gagnon and Sean Smith representing the Huskies. For the 16th time, and second straight year, Roy had one of his athletes named the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Performer, as Smith took home the honors of Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer for his accomplish-ments during the conference Championship.

In 2008-09, Roy earned the fi rst back-to-back Big East Titles during his tenure as head coach when the track and fi eld team won the 2009 Indoor Big East Championship. For his efforts, Roy and his coaching staff were honored with the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year award for the second season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career. Roy produced three All-Americans in the indoor season as Michael Rutt and Brian Gagnon earned their second All-America honors in the

800-meter run and Marquis Thomas was named an All-Amer-ican in the high jump. Roy also took home USTFCCCA honors for the fourth time as he was named the Northeast Indoor Track Coach of the year following his successful 2009 Indoor season.

During the 2007-08 season, UConn won the Big East Indoor Championship and fell only 17.5 points shy of taking the Out-door title as well. During the 2008 seasons, Roy coached six of his athletes to eight Big East individual titles. For his efforts, he was rewarded for the fourth time in his career with the title of Big East Indoor Staff of the Year. UConn continued on its hot

streak after the Big East Championships and under the direction of Roy, won its 14th New England Championship in the last 15 years qualifying three of its athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

In 2006-07, UConn was unable to win a Big East Championship but instead won the Sorlein Invitational, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the Harvard Select Meet and the New England Championship. Roy was able to guide Jake Radzevich to two pole vault individual championships, Sean Berg to an individual championship in the heptathlon, Gagnon to the title in the outdoor 800-meter run, Andrew Dubs to an outdoor shot put victory and his 4 x 100m team to a relay championship. During the indoor season, Roy was named New England Coach of the Year.

During the 2005-06 season, UConn won its fi fth Big East Indoor Champi-onship in school history, fourth under the direction of Roy and the third in the last fi ve years. Roy also guided the Huskies to a pair of fi rst place fi nishes and a 13-1 overall record during the outdoor season as well. Under Roy’s tutelage, seven Huskies were selected to compete in the NCAA Regionals following outstanding performances in the regular sea-son. Senior Joel Lagare, one of the NCAA Regional fi nalists, fi nished third in the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time under Roy. Sean Berg also appeared in his fi rst NCAA Championships as the junior competed in the decathlon and fi nished in 18th place.

In the 2004-05 season, the Huskies saw success across the board while some of the program’s greatest talents suffered injuries. Will Thomas ad-vanced to the NCAA Championship in the decathlon for the fourth-con-secutive season, but was injured during the competition and could not fi nish. UConn fi nished in ninth place at the Big East Indoor Champion-ship, with numerous athletes scoring points in different events. The Huskies also fi nished in a tie for seventh at the New England Cham-pionship. Outdoors, UConn fi nished fi fth at the Big East Cham-pionship and third at New Englands. With Roy’s assistance, Ellis Gaulden and Thomas both advanced to the NCAA Regionals, with Gaulden competing in the high jump.

Roy’s squad captured its fourth Big East In-door Championship in 2003-2004, its second in three years and won an 11th-straight New England Cham-

pionship. The team took second at the IC4A Champion-ship and saw two of its members take home All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship as Will Thomas fi nished fourth in the heptathlon to become a three-time

All-American and Logan Jones earned All-America honors in the 800-meter run. The Huskies took third at the Outdoor Big East Championship and Paul Pisano became the fi rst-ever three-time javelin champion. Joel Legare earned All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800-meter.

In 2002-2003, Roy produced four All-Americans for the second consecu-tive year. Will Thomas earned the honor for a second time in the decath-lon, placing second at the NCAA Championship. Thrower Paul Pisano also earned All-America status for the second straight year, as did Joe Mendel in the sprints. Mike Deibler earned his fi rst All-America honor by plac-ing eighth in the high jump. The indoor and outdoor teams took home second-place at both the Big East Indoor and Outdoor Championship. Indoors, UConn saw its usual success at the New England Championship, bringing home their 10th consecutive title.

The 2001-02 season was one of the most successful in Roy’s career. His indoor and outdoor squads took home both of the Big East Championships and Roy, for the eighth consecutive year, had his athletes reach All-Ameri-can status as four athletes were awarded the honor. Dan Wilson garnered All-America status three times to become the fi rst fi ve-time All-American in UConn history. Wilson fi nished 14th at the NCAA cross country champion-ship, eighth in the indoor mile run and registered the fi fth All-America title at the outdoor track and fi eld championship, fi nishing ninth in the 1,500 meter run. Joe Mendel fi nished among the top eight in the indoor 400-me-ter dash to claim the honor, while Paul Pisano and Will Thomas earned their All-America status at the outdoor championship. Pisano earned a 12th place fi nish in the javelin and Thomas competed in the decathlon, fi nishing eighth with a then school record 7,630 points. In addition, the team successfully defended the New England Indoor Championship title.

Along with a pair of New England titles in 1999-2000, Roy led the Huskies to an overall record of 21-1, a runner-up performance at the BIG EAST Outdoors and a third-place fi nish at the indoor edition of the meet. During the indoor season, four more All-Americans were added to the school list as the distance medley relay team of Haven Barnes, Elliott Blount, Kevin Jensen and Dan Wilson fi nished fourth at the NCAA national championship with a time of 9:33.85. Roy added to his list of achievements by being selected by his peers as the United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year following both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

The fi rst 14 years as the Head Coach of the Husky track squad began the tradition of excellence that Roy thrives for today. Starting in 1990, the Husky squad began their dominance in both New England and NCAA com-petition. Over the next eight years, Roy produced his fi fth and sixth cross country All-Americans in Andy Ball (1990) and Travis Landreth (1998) as well as mentored four-time All-American hurdler Dudley Dorival who went on to compete in the Olympics for Haiti in 2000 and 2004, weight thrower Steve Santoli (1998) and thrower Ray Wilks (1999). Roy’s squads fi nished 81-5-1 in dual meets from 1995 to 1999 for an outstanding .934 win percentage and won their second Indoor BIG EAST Championship. Before the start of the 1999-2000 season, Roy had accrued fi ve NCAA Coach of the Year awards (1990-Cross Country, 1993-94-Indoor, 1995-96 Outdoor, 1996-97 Indoor and 1998-99 Indoor) as well as, with his staff, back-to-back BIG EAST Staff of the Year awards (1995-96-Outdoor, 1996-97-In-door).

In 1990, Roy brought his cross country squad into the national spotlight, fi nishing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division I National Championship meet while also winning the IC4A Championship. UConn ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation. The 1993-94 season marked the beginning of an 11-year winning streak at the New England Champion-ships and in 1996-97, before winning the Big East Championship, Roy coached his squad to a perfect 15-0 dual meet record.

A native of East Brunswick, N.J., Roy earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1978, where he held the school record in the 220 and 440-yard runs. He added a master’s degree in Sport Manage-ment from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1982 and worked as the assistant track and cross country coach from 1981-83 during his time at UMass.

Roy lives in Lebanon, Conn. with his wife, Natalie, their daughter Kathryn, is studying nursing at Chamberlain College, and son Michael is a junior on the UConn track and fi eld team.

Rich MillerAssociate Head Coach

19th Overall Season

Rich Miller enters his third season as the associate head coach at the University of Connecticut and his 19th season overall working with the Huskies. Miller spent 10 years as a part-time assistant working with the multi-event performers as well as those competing in pole vault and javelin.

Miller has produced two All-Americans during his time at UConn in Paul Pisano and Will Thomas. Pisano earned the accolade during the 2002 and 2003 seasons in the javelin, while Thomas was named an All-American following his per-formance in the heptathlon during 2004 and the decathlon in 2002 and 2003.

Prior to joining the Huskies full-time, Miller was employed as a physical therapist with Health South/PTSMA in Storrs. While at Health South, Miller provided direct patient care in an outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine clinic while also collaborating with local physicians on implementing treatment plans to rehabilitate patients with a variety of ailments. Miller also served as a member of the Big East Track and Field seeding committee.

Miller, who was a 1995 UConn graduate, enjoyed both academic and athletic success during his undergraduate years. He served as co-captain of UConn’s track and fi eld teams in both his junior and senior years, two years in which the Huskies won back-to-back New England Indoor Championships.

He was a four-time All-East performer in the decathlon while also earning All-New England and All-Big East honors in the pentathlon and pole vault

events. His academic achievements set a standard of excel-lence for all student-athletes, as he was a member of the 1994-95 Big East Conference Academic All-Star team and was named a UConn Club Outstanding Scholar-Ath-lete in 1995.

A native of Cresskill, N.J., Miller attended Cress-kill High School where he lettered in soccer, basketball and track. He resides in Storrs, Conn. with his wife, Dorinda, daughter, Emily and son, Caden.

Renny WaldronAssistant Coach/Cross Country

CoachFirst Season

University of Connecticut men's track and fi eld welcomes Ren-ny Waldron as assistant coach for cross country and track and fi eld. Waldron works primarily with distance runners in both the cross country and track and fi eld programs.

Waldron, a graduate of UMass, enters Storrs with a vast amount of experience as he most recently served as a vol-unteer assistant at Harvard where he worked with the men's distance runners. Prior to working with the Crimson, Waldron served at the assistant track and fi eld coach and cross coun-try coordinator at Northeastern from 2006-12.

At Northeastern, Waldron saw 18 school records fall in the distance events and helped six individuals to CAA titles from2010-12. He helped Northeastern to its highest-ever fi n-

ish in the conference and mentored Eric Jenkins, who posted a pair of sub-four minute mile times and was the only fresh-man to qualify for the NCAA fi nal in the 1,500 in 2011.

Prior to his time at Northeastern, Waldron served as the head cross country and track and fi eld coach at nearby Cambridge Rindge and Latin from 2004-06. He oversaw the entire boys team and led them to eight Greater Boston League cham-pionships. Waldron has also spent time as a coach and featured speaker at the Green Mountain Running Camp and has worked with the New England Chapter of USA Track and Field, where he helped with the organization of meets and events.

2013-14 Men’s Track & Field 27

2012-13 SEASON REVIEWThe University of Connecticut men’s track and fi eld team completed one of its fi nest years in program history last season, sweeping both the indoor and outdoor titles in the former Big East Conference. The Huskies also took home championship plaques from the IC4A Indoor Championships and the New England Indoor Championships. Head Coach Greg Roy and his staff were named the indoor and outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year by the Big East conference, marking the fourth time his unit has achieved this feat (2001, 2002, 2011, 2013).

Connecticut opened its 2013 campaign at home on Jan. 5 in a winning fashion that would foreshadow the season’s success. UConn posted ten fi rst-place fi nishes to defeat Southern Connecticut in the home opener. Highlights included Cory Duggan setting a Hugh S. Greer Field House Record in the pole vault with a mark of 15-11.75. Similarly, then-senior Kevin Smith broke another record with a time of 6.40 seconds in the 55 meter dash.

From there, UConn’s heptathlon athletes competed at the URI Heptathlon, with Jesse Chapman leading the way with 5,228 points. The team then went on to capture the Great Dane Classic for the third consecutive season, with Selwyn Maxwell setting a new personal record in the 60 meter hurdles in 7.96 seconds and the Distance Medley Relay squad of James Agati, Alex Bennatan, Joe Clark, and Alex Levine bagged top prize.

The following weekend Connecticut shipped up to Boston for the unscored Terrier Invite, notching eight top-fi ve fi nishes on the day. At the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup the squad fi nished second out of 14 teams. Darnell Cummings paced the Huskies with a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the 60 and 200 meter dashes.

Inclement weather prevented the Huskies from participating in the Lafayette Rider Winter Games, affording extra time for preparation

and rest before the upcoming Big East Championships. Prior to the conference championships, the Big East announced that senior sprinter Kevin Smith had been awarded the 2012-13 American Eagle Outfi tters Big East Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship, which contributes $2,000 towards graduate studies.

The Huskies were sensational at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, which hosted the 2013 Big East Indoor Championships. Connecticut captured its ninth Indoor crown thanks in large part to the lone individual fi rst-place fi nish by Darnell Cummings in the 60 meter dash on a time of 6.76. The Huskies 4x800 meter relay team dominated the meet, claiming fi rst place with a time of 7:32.60, breaking the SPIRE record in the process.

UConn followed their championship performance from the league championship with another title at the 2013 New England Championship. Twelve Huskies set personal bests, three claimed individual titles, and the 4x800 meter relay squad continued to dominate as Connecticut rolled to its eighth consecutive New England crown. Kyle Twombly, Cory Duggan, and Josh Faboyde captured titles in the 500 meter run, the pole vault and the weight throw, respectively.

The Huskies only continued to shine from there, claiming their third crown in as many weeks at the IC4A Championships to conclude an excellent Indoor season. The win represented only the second time Connecticut has taken home the IC4A title, making it a special championship indeed. Clinching the IC4A Championship also gave the Huskies the triple crown of indoor championships, marking only the second time in program history UConn swept the BIG EAST, New England, and IC4A Titles in one season. An important pair of fi rst-place fi nishes helped the Huskies achieve this feat, with Alex Bennatan topping the podium in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:49.45 and the 4x800 meter relay squad of Philip Caldwell, Nick O’Leary, Paul Desalvo, and Tim Bennatan capturing fi rst with a time of 7:27.66.

The Huskies opened their 2013 outdoor season in warmer climates, traveling to Orlando, Florida for the University of central Florida Invitational. Eleven athletes posted top-fi ve fi nishes for Connecticut, including Jesse Chapman and Sam Smith in the 110 meter hurdles, Joe Clark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Josh Faboyede in the hammer throw, and Cory Duggan in the pole vault. Amanze Williams added a top-fi ve fi nish in the triple jump and Eric Masington contributed two top-fi ve results in the shot put and discus.

UConn shined in the friendly confi nes of their home track, the Sherman Family Sports Complex, in a number of home meets including the UConn Spring Invite, the UConn Decathlon, and the Dog Fight. Connecticut posted 37 top-fi ve fi nishes in their home opener at the Spring Invite en route to the meet win and Jesse Chapman claimed UConn’s top fi nish in the UConn Decathlon with a fi nal score of 6,969.overall.

2013 Cross Country ReviewThe University of Connecticut men’s cross country team opened the season with back-to-back fi rst place fi nishes at the six-team UMass Invite on Sept. 14 and the Ted Owen Invitational. The Huskies averaged a time of 19:41.73 in the win at UMass, with freshman Mike O’Donnell (Methuen, Mass.) leading the way with a second place fi nish in his fi rst collegiate race. The victory at the CCSU Ted Owen Invitation-al 8k resulted from a full team effort, as fi ve Huskies posted top-10 fi nishes in the triumph. Once again Michael O’Donnell led the squad with a third place fi nish, followed immediately by Alvaro Chavez and David Cotton in fourth and fi fth place, respectively.

UConn ran into some adversity at the New England cham-pionships on Oct. 13 in Boston, Mass. Bryan Fowler led the UConn effort in a time of 25:21 to fi nish 41st overall, while the team took an 11th place fi nish out of 41 total schools.

The team reset for its fi rst-ever American Athletic Conference Championship located in Madison, Connecticut at Hammonas-set State Park. Sophomore captain Bryan Fowler and Michael O’Donnell once again teamed up for the Huskies’ top fi nishes, earning 12th and 15th, respectively. Louisville claimed the inaugural conference championship. UConn wrapped up the 2013 cross country season with a 19th place fi nish out of 37 teams at the NCAA Regional Championship in New York on Nov. 15. Freshman Paul Holden earned UConn’s top fi nish in a time of 32:11.5.

As a young team with no seniors, the full squad will return for the 2014 edition of UConn cross country and look to continue competing at the next level.

Jesse Chapman competes at the 2013 Outdoor NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The Huskies also claimed the fourth annual Dog Fight for the second consecutive year, accumulating 105 points to best Alba-ny’s 94.

The Huskies faced stiff competition at LSU’s Battle on the Bayou, fi nishing fourth against four nationally-ranked oppo-nents. Four Connecticut athletes grabbed fi rst-place fi nishes, with James Agati capturing the 1,500 meter run, Alvaro Chavez winning the 800 meter run, Bryan Fowler taking the 3,000 meter run, and Cody Unger recording a top fi nish in the javelin. Unger would go on to be named Big East Field Athlete of the Week for the 68.37 meter launch. In the fi nal home meet of 2013 on April 20, UConn fi nished as the top dog at the UConn classic.

At the prestigious Penn Relays, two Huskies captured top-fi ve results from Eric Masington in the shot put and a fi fth-place performance from the 4x00 meter relay team of Selwyn Max-well, Jesse Drinks, Kevin Smith, and Robert Hovanec. Claudio

DelliCarpini, who competed at the Yale Invite that weekend, was tabbed as the Big East Track Athlete of the Week for his 14.59 fi nish in the 110 meter hurdles.

Connecticut traveled to Piscataway, New Jersey for the 2013 Big East Outdoor Championship. Fifteen Huskies posted top-fi ve fi nishes and Jesse Chapman recorded the lone gold medal in the decathlon to help UConn clinch its 13th Big East Champion-ship.

At the IC4A Championships, Selwyn Maxwell grabbed fi rst place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.94 and the 4x800 meter relay team of Tim Bennatan, Nick O’Leary, James Agati, and Alvaro Chavez took third place.

Six Huskies qualifi ed to compete at the NCAA East Regionals in Greensboro, N.C. Representing UConn was Jesse Drinks, Selwyn Maxwell, Eric Masington, Cory Duggan, and Chris Ackell. Jes-se Chapman had already posted qualifying marks for the NCAA Championship. In Oregon, Chapman earned Honorable Men-tion All-American after fi nishing 20th in the decathlon with 7,054 points. Chapman’s performance was highlighted by two top-fi ve fi nishes in the shot put (14.41m) and the discus (46.29m). The ju-nior was able to fi nd success on the second day of action, moving up two spots and fi nishing his season on a high note.

Overall, the 2012-13 season was a tremendous one for the Hus-kies, as they went out with a bang in their fi nal year as a member of the Big East Conference.

THIS IS

UCONN

Next Generation Connecticut“Next Generation Connecticut” was signed into law this past summer and posi-

tions UConn to ascend the ranks of the world’s elite research universities, as its intel-lectual capital is put to work energizing the state’s innovation-based economy. The $1.5 billion construction component is an investment in building new scientific laboratories, purchasing advanced equipment, constructing new classrooms, and adding housing. The state will also invest $137 million in operating funds to hire hundreds of new faculty, and to expand the student body in STEM fields (science, technology, engineer-ing, and math). The initiative is projected to bring in more than $270 million in new research dollars over 10 years, spur well over half a billion dollars in business activity, and support more than 4,000 permanent jobs, plus 30,000 construction jobs.

U.S. News World Report ranks UConn among the top 25 public universities in the nation.

UConn’s School of Business is ranked among the Top 25 public undergradu-ate business programs in the U.S. according to U.S. News and World Report.

The University has been selected as a member of Universitas 21, a preemi-nent international network of leading research-intensive universities in 15 countries.

The Neag School of Education’s doctoral program in kinesiology ranks No. 1 in the nation, according to the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.

More than 30,000 students enrolled, representing nearly every state in the nation and 98 countries. Average SAT scores for incoming freshmen at Storrs are up over 100 points since 1996 and are now 1226 (critical reading and math only). The 440 students UConn welcomed into its Honors Program in 2011 had an average SAT score of more than 1400. Minority students made up 26% of the 2012 incoming undergraduate class. Since 1995, 1,538 valedicto-rians and salutatorians have enrolled at all campuses. In fall 2012, 48 percent of freshmen entering the Storrs campus were ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class and 84 percent were ranked in the top 25 percent of their class.

UConn continues to renew, rebuild and enhance our campuses through an unprecedented $2.8 billion, 20-year investment in the University’s infrastructure. UCONN 2000 has been the most ambitious publicly financed univer-sity building program in the country. Now in its 18th year, UCONN 2000 has invigorated the University’s living and learning environments, helped advance faculty research, and stimulated public and private investment. This investment revitalizes the state’s future by providing the means for the University to attract high-achieving students, prestigious faculty, and funding from public grants and private donors. The multibillion dollar facelift has facilitated UConn’s ascent to national prominence among public research uni-versities.

Today, Bioscience Connecticut, an $864 million initiative, is transforming the campus of the UConn Health Center. Bioscience Connecticut is a forward-thinking plan to create thousands of construction and related jobs in the short-term and generate long-term, sustainable economic growth based on bioscience research, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization. It is a multifaceted plan that also includes initiatives to improve access to healthcare services in the region and beyond.

Renovations have begun in the original research tower and work is underway to build the new outpatient care center and the new hospital tower. In addition, groundbreaking ceremonies were held

leading academic and healthcare institutions in the region.

The UConn School of Law is one of the leading public law schools in the country. Its campus, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, is among the most beautiful of any law school in the United States. The newly-completed law library is perhaps the finest facility of its kind in the world. Two miles from the center of Hartford, the Law School is located in a neighborhood of large Victorian homes.

UConn has long had an undergraduate campus in the Greater Hartford region and plans are now underway to relocate that campus to the center of downtown Hartford.

The UConn campus in downtown Stamford is surrounded by a cluster of corporate headquarters including a number of Fortune 500 companies, such as Pitney-Bowes and Charter Communications.

The UConn campus in Waterbury is housed in a new state-of the-art facility. Options exist to transfer to the Storrs campus after two years

UConn’s “campus by the ocean” is located at Avery Point in the southern portion of the state in Groton. Avery Point is the home to the Connecticut Sea Grant Program in conjunction with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Project Oceanography, and education program for middle school and high school students, is also on the Avery Point campus.
