FrontcourtMuch like the backcourt, the frontcourt has plenty of talent and experience, which includes the return of seniorsThomas Gipson and Nino Williams, junior D.J. Johnson, sophomore Wesley Iwundu and newcomers Brandon Bolden, Stephen Hurt and Malek Harris.

This group will be anchored by the veterans Gipson and Williams. Gipson enters the season one short of 100games played in his career, including 64 starts, while Williams is the teams most experience player as he entershis fth season in the program after receiving a medical redshirt as a true freshman in 2010-11.

Williams has the versatility to play either small forward spots and has experience as both a starter and reserve. After coming o the bench, he started the teams last nine games of the 2013-14 season after an injury sidelinedSouthwell and performed well. During this nine-game span, he averaged 7.8 points on 49.1 percent shootingwith 4.8 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per game, which included his rst 20-point game in a loss at Baylor. He rankedsecond in rebounding, third in eld goals and eld goal percentage and fourth in scoring during this period.

Iwundu is another returner with some signicant experience after playing in all 33 games a year ago, including32 starts. In addition to his three double-doubles, he scored in double gures on eight occasions, including vetimes in Big 12 play, while he was led the squad in rebounding ve times and in assists in four times. FreshmanMalek Harris will also help depth at the small forward spots after being a late addition to the team in the Spring signing period. A Top 100 national recruit by most recruiting services, the 6-foot-8 forward re-opened hisrecruitment after a coaching change at Marquette. He averaged a double-double as a junior in 2012-13.

Gipson, who played 30 or minutes in 13 games after doing that just twice in his rst two seasons, will receivemuch needed relief in the post with the return of Johnson and the additions of Bolden and Hurt. Johnson, who isstill recovering from a foot injury, has seen action in 63 games in his rst two seasons, including 33 a year ago.Bolden and Hurt both measure at 6-foot-11 and should provide a greater blocking presence. Bolden played injust four games at Georgetown as a true freshman before transferring, but was considered one of the top centerprospects as a senior. Hurt, who spent an injury-plagured year at Northwest Florida State Junior College in 2013-14, was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year as a redshirt freshman at Lipscomb in 2012-13after averaging 11.5 points on 53.5 percent shooting with 7.8 rebounds per game.

Oensively, I hope we can use our defense and run better, get some easy baskets with our big guys running thecourt, and yet have some guys that can go make plays, said Weber. The dierence between 20 wins last yearand 27 wins the year before was winning the close games, and usually it comes down to guys making shots.

ScheduleK-State will face yet another daunting slate in 2014-15, as the Wildcats could play as many as 24 games againstteams that advance to the postseason a year ago, including 14 that earned invitations to the NCAA Tournament. In addition to year four of the 18-game round-robin schedule in the nations No. 1 RPI conference - the Big 12 -the squad will face non-conference tests against Long Beach State (Nov. 21), an excellent eld at the EA SportsMaui Invitational which includes Arizona, BYU, Chaminade, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Purdue and San Diego State and Tennessee (Dec. 6), Texas A&M (Dec. 20) and Georgia (Dec. 31).

The Big 12 will again be one of the nations top conferences with eight teams advancing to the postseason a yearago, including seven in the NCAA Tournament. The league slate starts on Saturday, Jan. 3 on the road againstOklahoma State, while the home opener will be Wednesday, Jan. 7 against TCU. Other teams visiting BramlageColiseum include NCAA Tournament participants Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, OSU and Texas. For theeighth consecutive season, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship will be played at Kansas Citys Sprint Center.

In the midst of one of the most successful periods in its history, Kansas State enters the 2014-15 campaign withhigh aspirations with the return of nine lettermen, including ve players with starting experience, from a squadthat advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a school-record fth consecutive season. Under third-year head coachBruce Weber, whose 47 wins are the most by a head coach in his rst two seasons in school history, the teamreturns more than 70 percent of its scoring and 65 percent of its rebounding, including its top individual scorer(Marcus Foster) and rebounder (Thomas Gipson) for the rst time since 2010-11.

In addition to these returners, the Wildcats will also have the services of Division I transfers in junior guard JustinEdwards (Maine) and sophomore forward Brandon Bolden (Georgetown), who sat out the 2013-14 season, along with four newcomers, including community college transfer and 2012-13 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year Stephen Hurt and highly-regarded rookies Tre Harris and Malek Harris.

Obviously, you are excited as a coaching sta, said Weber. We are in our third year, we won a Big 12 title (inyear one) and came back and had a pretty good recruiting class that earned valuable minutes as freshmen andnow we add some transfers that you hope are pretty talented. So we feel like we are making some strides as aprogram. I always stay cautionously optimistic because we have had a lot of injuries, some guys that have missedthe whole summer. Your second worry or concern would be the experience of the point guards. The reason wehad success the rst two years is that we some really good passers and some good cerebral guys. To see theprogress of Nigel (Johnson) and Jevon (Thomas) will be really important for our team plus other guys helpingthem and giving them the needed passing skills and understanding of the game.

The returning group is headlined by All-Big 12 Second Team selection Marcus Foster (15.5 ppg., 3.2 rpg.) andhonorable mention pick Thomas Gipson (11.7 ppg., 6.5 rpg.). Foster is coming of a sensational rookie season, in which, he led the Wildcats in eight categories, including scoring, double-digit scoring games (27), 20-pointgames (eight), eld goals (177), 3-point eld goals (78) and free throw percentage (73.4). He joined MichaelBeasley as the only true freshmen in school history to earn recognition to one of three All-Big 12 teams, whilehe was one of just three true freshmen to garner a spot in 2013-14. The veteran Gipson, who has played in nearly100 games in his three-year career, is coming o one of his best seasons in his career, as he paced the team ineld goal percentage (56.2), rebounding, free throws (84), double-doubles (4) and double-digit reboundinggames (5) en route to earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.

Although not as heralded as Foster, rising sophomore guard Wesley Iwundu (6.7 ppg., 4.2 rpg.) is coming o asolid rookie campaign, in which, his 32 starts rated as the third-most ever by a true freshman, trailing the 33recorded by Beasley and Foster. He ranked second in double-doubles (3), while he was third in rebounding, fourth in assists (1.8 apg.) and fth in scoring. Senior forward Nino Williams (6.2 ppg., 3.5 rpg.) will provide signicant experience after playing in all 33 games a year ago, including 10 starts. One of three players to shootbetter than 50 percent, he averaged 7.8 points on 49.1 percent shooting with 4.8 rebounds in the last ninegames. The squad also returns junior forward D.J. Johnson (3.5 ppg., 3.5 rpg.), sophomore guards Nigel Johnson (4.1 ppg., 1.6 apg.) and Jevon Thomas (2.5 ppg., 2.6 apg.) and senior walk-on Shawn Meyer.

In addition to these returners, the Wildcats fortunes will be buoyed by the two transfers. Edwards played twoseasons (2011-13) at Maine, including averaging an America East-best 16.7 points per game as a sophomore enroute to earning second team all-conference honors. Bolden was rated one of the top high school centers in thecountry before spending one season (2012-13) at Georgetown.

K-State was selected to nish fourth in the preseason 2014-15 Big 12 Coaches poll in early October, receiving 53points to edge fth-place Iowa State (51). The fourth-place prediction was the highest since the Wildcats wereselected as the preseason favorite in 2010-11. The team was also chosen fourth in the preseason polls of 2007-08and 2009-10. Kansas (78) was picked as the Big 12 favorite with Texas (74) and Oklahoma (67) following.

The (fan) expectations are pretty high, but we have to keep a level head, said Weber. We have to worry aboutwhat we are doing to get ready for the season.

BackcourtFoster, Johnson and Thomas headline a strong returning backcourt for the Wildcats, who will have more optionsat the point and shooting guard spots with the inux of both returners and newcomers. The group must replaceseniors Shane Southwell and Will Spradling, who played in more than 100 games in their respective careers.

Johnson and Thomas will start the year sharing the point guard spot. Johnson ranked third among rookies with30 games played, while he was third on the team in steals (23), fourth in 3-point eld goals (17) and sixth in assists (48). Despite only being able to practice and play the second semester due to an NCAA ruling, Thomas still enjoyed a solid inaugural campaign as he tallied the fourth-highest assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5) in schoolhistory. He ranked fth on the team in assists, while his 2.6 per game average was the second-highest.

Foster will also be counted also has the ability to run the oense, spending considerable time at the position during his time at the prestigious LeBron James Skills Academy this summer. However, he will maintain hisposition as the primary shooting guard after his stellar freshman year. He became just the fth Wildcat to be selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 in early October and the rst since Rodney McGruder in 2012.

The shooting guard spot will also get a boost with addition of Edwards, a former All-America East selection andRookie of the Year who averaged 15.3 points on 43.1 percent shooting in his two-year career at Maine (2011-13).During his sophomore season in 2012-13, he averaged an America East-best 16.7 points per game and scored indouble gures in 26 of 29 games, including six 20-point performances and three double-doubles. Freshman TreHarriswill also provide depth after spending a postgraduate year at Fishburne (Va.) Military School in 2013-14.He scored 1,460 points during his prep career at Edwardsville (Ill.) High School.

Last year, we really struggled oensively at times, and thats usually when we lost games, said Weber. Now wehope we have more depth, the younger guys that scored last year are a year older. You add in Justin with his history at Maine and hopefully the added depth will create more competition.
