YOUR FRESHIE

GE stands for General Education subjects. The typical UP student is required to take 45 units of these GEs with 15 units from three different domains, namely the Arts and Humanities (AH), Mathematics and Science and Technology (MST), and Social Science and Philosophy (SSP). In addition, six units from these must be coming from Philippine Studies subjects. These are all in accordance with the Revised General Education Program (RGEP).

WHAT ARE GEs?

WHICH GEs ARE WE SUPPOSED TO TAKE?ENG 10 AH Domain The writing and critical reading of forms of

academic discourse essential to university work

COMM 3 AH Domain Speaking and listening skills and their applications in various communication situations

FIL 40 AH Domain Ang relasyon ng Filipino sa kultura at lipunang Pilipino

PHILO 1 SSP Domain Application of basic concepts, skills & principles drawn from the philosophy of language, symbolic logic, epistemology, philosophy of science & ethics

KAS 1 SSP Domain Ang pagsulong na pulitikal, pang-ekonomiya, panlipunan at pagkalinangan ng Pilipinas

STS MST Domain The analysis from historical & futuristic perspectives of the nature & role of science & technology in society & of the socio-cultural & politico-economic factors affecting their development with emphasis

on Philippine setting

Under the AH domain, you have 2 free choices left. For BAA students, these 2 choices are limited to English courses, like English 1, 11, 12 and 30. This in accordance with the requirement set by the Board of Accountancy of the Professional Regulation that accounting students are to take at least 9 units of English courses.

Under the SSP domain, you have 3 free choices.

Under the MST domain, you have 3 free choices. These subjects are really hard to get so take advantage of your priority status and take as much MSTs as you can.

HOW MANY FREE GEs DO WE HAVE LEFT?

There are a few GEs that are not allowed to be taken by students from our college. These are Comm 1, Comm 2, Hum 1, Hum 2 and Math 2.

ARE THERE PROHIBITED GEs?

TOP 5 LIBRARIESOF A VSB FRESHIE

When: Monday to Friday (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM)The library in the Institute of Mathematics is a well-ventilated room, perfect for solving those complicated problems in Math 17 and Math 100. The desks are also made in a way that gives a lot of personal space. And if you missed out on your modules, you can also find them here!

5. Institute of Mathematics Library

When: Monday to Friday (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM) Saturday (8:00 AM – 12:00 NN ; 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)Where: UP Alumni Engineers HallThis library boasts a very relaxing atmosphere. It is also conveniently close to the Institute of Mathematics and the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) so if you have a lot of free time before your subjects in these buildings, you may opt to stay in this library first. Best feature? Mac computers.

4. Engineering Library 2

When: Monday – Friday (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) Saturday (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM)Being the library most strategically located near AS and CAL itself, this place will most likely be the one you are looking for when you want to study. The atmosphere is very pleasant. The library also has a very cozy reading room, perfect for non-academic books that we all love to read.

3. College of Arts and Letters Library

When: Monday – Saturday (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)The Main Library is the library of all libraries. This is where you’ll find most of the materials you will be needing for your GEs. Books with varying topics abound in the Main Library. You’ll never run out of seats and tables either. It also offers Internet services and photocopying machines. The only downside with this ancient library is the absence of airconditioning units. Other than that, it is the perfect place for your studying.

2. Main Library

When: Monday (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) Tuesday – Friday (8:00 AM – 7:00 PM)What else would top this list rather than our very own library? You have to visit this library at least once per semester since you’ll have to validate your IDs here! This is the place to claim your Internet cards too! It is well-ventilated and there are enough tables and chairs for everyone.

MATH 17 TIPSREAD UP!The principles of algebra and trigonometry have been there for a long time already – waiting for you. The problem is, the class won’t. Studying beforehand can help you move along with the lecture. Standard references: Leithold, Vance, and Castillo.

1PRACTICE THEORY!Do: - Book exercises for familiarization.- Assignments and seatwork for retention.- Sample exams (from the Math Bldg. Xerox or your teacher) for nuances.

2MAXIMIZE THE TEACHERS!Listen to their lectures. Respond to their questions. Ask them about gray areas. No matter what adjectives students plaster on them, the noun “teacher/prof” remains.

3REMEMBER THE PAST!You can do this effectively not only by memorizing the formulas and scenarios, but understanding the rationale of the principle. Cram-then-forget is a big no-no, especially for a field of study as integrated and interrelated as math.

4JOIN DISCUSSIONS!Eavesdrop on heated math arguments. Blurt out your own computations. Spread the controversial math problem. And realize along the way that you’ve finally got it.5

TESTIMONIALS

Alvin Amil (II - BSBA)Welcome to VSB! You may seldom go here because you don’t have majors yet. But from my experience, I was able to discover what it’s like to be a VSB student through the orgs that I joined and the events organized by the SBSC. Make the most out of your freshie life by making friends and joining orgs, but don’t forrget your academics.

Irvette Abary (III - BSBA)In VSB, no matter what you’ve achieved in HS, all of you are open to the same opportunities; opportunities that will be raining in multitudes. So go grab onto one. Do so and you’ll be a happy bean. Join an org. Step up in your batch. Make new friends. Don’t live a life of acads alone. Be well-rounded on your first year. Don’t be taken by the misconception of grades before orgs. If you think 5 years is long enough, think again. Kaya mo yan.

Marty Gonzaga (IV - BSBA)First of all, congrats! You’re in the most in-demand course in the entire UP system. You are the top 3%. Be proud! Don’t listen to anyone who says freshie year is the best year of your college life. Your goal should be to make each year better and better. Still, make the most out of it. Say hi to strangers (a.k.a. future friends) - they’ll be there for you until you graduate. Drink on a school day (but NEVER let your acads suffer). Join as many orgs as you want; only 40% of your education is in the classroom. Join and win competitions. Why wait ‘till second year? I know things are hard, but it’s not going to get easier. If not now, then when? Seize every opportunity. More than the GEs and majors you take, college is about building experiences, networks, and memories. Don’t let anything get in the way of a UP education. Lastly, always remember that the upperclassmen will always be there to help you kahit baliw or haggard na kami.

Pat Anatalio (V - BSBAA)Matulog na kayo habang pwede pa! Pero on a more serious note, persevere lang talaga at walang susuko!

Abraham Alsol (III - BSBAA)Always remember who you are and who you want to be. You’ll meet all kinds of people here, but it’s always up to you if you’re going to make yourself shine.
