UNC Asheville is a selective, public liberal arts institution. UNC Asheville’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program refl ects the attitudes and values underlying the University’s overall mission: academic excellence, diversity, equity, integrity, service, and accomplishment. The UNC Asheville athletics program contributes to this liberal arts culture in two ways. First, athletics programs foster a sense of community and pride by fi elding NCAA Division I teams and developing talented student-athletes who successfully represent UNC Asheville in competition and refl ect the University’s commitment to overall excellence. Accordingly, the athletics program encourages an atmosphere of respect for self and others through the development of ethical conduct, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship and provides equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women, minorities and indivduals of all sexual identities. Second, the program provides an additional campus experience for capable students to grow and develop academically, personally, socially, and athletically. This experience promotes institutional commitment and pride on the part of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The UNC Asheville volleyball program looks to get back to its win-ning ways in 2013.

A young Asheville squad, faced with a diffi cult non-conference schedule, struggled at times in 2012 but still managed to go .500 in Big South Conference play (7-7) and advance to the semifi nals of the Big South Tournament for the seventh time in the last eight years. The Bull-dogs fi nished with a 12-20 overall record, their fi rst season below .500 in fi ve years.

However, Frederico Santos’ second Asheville squad battled through a lot of challenges last year that should pave the way for success in the future.

“We knew last season with so many young players that it would take time to develop chemistry that you need to have,” explained Santos. “Throw in a tough non-conference schedule, and we had some growing pains.

“But to our team’s credit, we kept working hard, and it began to pay off in conference play,” added Santos. “We had some great wins and were able to advance to the semifi nals of the tournament.” Despite being such a young team, the Bulldogs learned to win close matches. Asheville was 5-1 in fi ve-set affairs in 2012 with four of those wins against league foes. Now it’s time to take the next step in 2013. The Bulldogs’ roster is an interesting mix this season. Five seniors and one junior make up the upper class. Asheville’s eight remaining players are either freshmen or sophomores. “We want to be more consistent this season,” commented Santos. “We’ve added some talented new players to the mix but hopefully they’ll jell with our returners quickly. “I’m excited about the potential of this team,” added Santos. “This may be the tallest team we’ve ever had here at UNC Asheville. We enjoyed a good spring and everyone appears to be on the same page.” The Bulldogs will be led this year by their fi ve seniors, and all should make key contributions to the Asheville effort. “We’ve got fi ve seniors who know this is their fi nal year of playing,” admitted Santos. “They want to go out winners and are determined to accomplish as much as they can.” Middle blocker Anna Moore should be one of the top players in the Big South this season. She’s a two-time second team All-Conference selection and made the league’s preseason All-Conference team. The N.C. State transfer led Asheville in blocks (0.94), service aces (0.22) and hitting percentage (.267) and was second on the club in kills (2.62).

Bulldogs Looking To Bounce Back

Anna Moore

“Anna is the glue that holds our team together,” declared Santos. “She is a great offensive player and an excellent blocker on defense. Anna is a hard worker who brings a lot of leadership. She’s a calming infl uence on everyone and brings us some real stability. I’m looking for her to have a great senior season.”

Senior middle blocker Meredith Foster joins Moore along the front row. Foster, a two-sport athlete who also excels as a high jumper on the track and fi eld squad, was second on the club in hitting percentage (.242) and blocks (0.66).

“I’m looking for Meredith to have a big senior season,” stated Santos. “She has great quickness and is really focused for the year. When Meredith gets going, she’s tough to stop.”

Senior libero Rachel Wells has been a great story for the Bulldog program. She came to Asheville as a walk-on and has turned into one of the best liberos in the league.

Wells earned Big South All-Tournament honors for her play in last season’s event. She led Asheville in digs (3.65) and will compete for All-Conference honors this year.

“Rachel constantly pushes the envelope to be better and is doing everything to make sure we have a great season,” explained Santos. “She keeps getting better and could be the top defender in the Big South this year.”

Senior Alex Stewart joined the 1,000-dig club last year and brings a lot of experience to the back row. She can be a libero or a defensive specialist.

“We believe Alex and Rachel can form a pretty good defensive back row,” said Santos. “Alex is an experienced player who can provide a lot of things on defense for us this year.”

Senior Jaimie Dorfman is a versatile player who can be a setter and play in the back row. She’s an excellent server and was among the league’s leaders in service aces in 2011.

“Jaimie really helped us at the end of the season last year,” ex-plained Santos. “Her serving is very tough to stop and she has embraced her role in the back. We believe she can help us as a setter if we need her.” There’s just one junior on this year’s club, and that’s setter Lisa Riggsbee. “We really like Lisa’s work ethic,” commented Santos. “She is a player who continues to improve and will compete for playing time dur-ing the year.” Asheville’s sophomore class is headed up by setter Katie Davis. The Myrtle Beach, S.C. native was one of the top freshmen in the Big South in 2012 and earned a spot on the All-Freshman team as she aver-aged 9.07 assists per set. This summer, Davis was placed on the Junior National team and played in Europe this past July. “Katie did a nice job coming in and getting synched with the rest of the team which is not easy for a freshman,” explained Santos. “She had a great year as a freshman and is only going to get better. Like all of our freshmen last season, Katie grew under fi re and learned a lot during the year. She’ll be prepared for this year and be one of the top setters in the Big South.” Sophomore outside hitter Christine Lakatos came on strong as the year progressed in 2012. She fi nished the year third in kills (2.18) for the Bulldogs. “Once Christine started to fi gure out that she could put the ball away, she began to really contribute,” commented Santos. “Christine was a key reason for our second-half surge, and she’s only going to better for it this season.” Catherine Fischer, a sophomore right side, didn’t play much as a rookie due to ankle injury. She was healthy in the spring, enjoyed a fabulous season and was a key part of a Bulldog spring tournament title at Tennessee that included wins over Appalachian State and the Lady Volunteers. “Catherine is a versatile player who can play on the right side and in the back row,” admitted Santos. “She’s a good passer who really showed how good a player she could be in the spring. We’re anxious to see her on the court this season.” Local player Emily Bare can play either on the right side or as an outside hitter. The former Roberson standout was another Bulldog who played well in the spring. “We believe Emily could challenge for playing time in 2013,” de-clared Santos. “She has worked extremely hard to improve, and that was evident in the spring when she really played well.” Sophomore Bryn Pfeiffer played in the back row for the Bulldogs a year ago and also has the ability to be a libero. “Bryn made a lot of good defensive plays last year,” admitted Santos. “Her serving improved as the year continued. She did a solid job in the spring and could give Rachel a battle this fall at the libero spot.” Santos and his staff have brought in three freshmen who could help right away. Start with local player Taylor Sauer from nearby Enka HS in Candler. She’s an outside hitter who set state-wide records for kills in her senior season.

Rachel Wells

7

“We’re excited about Taylor’s potential,” stated Santos. “She’s had a great prep and club career and is physically ready for the college game. Taylor just needs the experience.”

A 6-1 outside hitter, Taylor Erickson, comes to Asheville from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

“Taylor can play anywhere along the front row. She can be used as a middle blocker, outside hitter or on the right side,” explained Santos. “Taylor is quite strong for someone 6-,1 and we’re looking forward to seeing where she can play.”

Asheville’s fi nal signee is 6-3 middle blocker Madison Vaughn from North Iredell HS in Statesville.

“Madison is going to push Anna and Meredith,” declared Santos. “She is prepared to play and isn’t shy about putting the ball down. Madi-son is a tremendous prospect who has a lot of potential.”

OVERALL COMMENTS

“The biggest thing we need in the preseason is to develop chemis-try. You’re always concerned about how chemistry will come together.

“One of our biggest strengths this year is going to be our depth. It’s been a while since we’ve had this kind of depth at Asheville. We have a deep bench, which gives us options throughout the year. Our starters are going to have to work hard all the time to keep their spot. When you have that kind of depth, everyone gets better and you become a better team.

“The Big South will be quite challenging this year. You have a lot of coaching turnover, which means new coaches with new systems and renewed enthusiasm. Liberty remains the favorite until someone knocks them off.

“We hope to be challenging for a conference championship and to be playing our best volleyball at the end of the season.”

Frederico SantosThird Year • UNC Asheville, 2007

Frederico Santos begins his third year as head coach of the UNC Asheville volleyball program. The former Bulldog assistant came back home in June of 2011 after serving as head coach at Barry University in Miami for three seasons.

Santos quickly showed that the winning tradition of UNC Asheville volleyball would continue under his guidance.

In 2011, despite only having 10 players and being picked to fi nish in seventh place in the Big South Preseason poll, the Bulldogs fi nished 15-14 overall and fourth in the league. Asheville advanced to the semifi nals of the conference tournament and fi nished runner-up in two in-season tourna-ments.

Last season, the Bulldogs had a 12-20 overall record and 7-7 league mark. A young Asheville squad battled through a tough schedule and some injuries to advance to the semifi nals of the Big South Championship for the seventh time in the last eight years. Despite being seeded sixth, the Bulldogs upset third-seeded High Point and just missed advancing to the championship with a close loss to second-seeded Coastal Carolina in the semifi nals. Along the way, Asheville thrilled its fans with exciting volleyball as the Bulldogs went 5-1 in fi ve-set matches, including a perfect 4-0 mark at Justice Center.

In three seasons as head coach at Barry, Santos led the Buccaneers to a 46-31 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament in 2010.

In 2010, Santos led Barry to a solid year as the Buccaneers posted a 16-7 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Sunshine State Conference. The Bucs picked up important wins over #22 Saint Leo and #25 Rollins in the regular season. Propelled by their conference play, the Bucs returned to the NCAA South Regional Tournament for the fi rst time since 2006. Julia Teixeira earned Sunshine State Conference player of the Year, Daktronics South Region Player of the Year and First-Team All-America recognition by Daktronics and the AVCA.

In 2009, the Bucs posted a 15-12 overall mark and went 6-10 in conference. In 2008, Santos’ fi rst season, the Bucs went 15-12, an improve-ment over 2007. The Bucs improved their conference record as well, going 5-11 for the season.

A native of Brazil, Santos has more than 20 years of international playing and coaching experience at all levels of the sport. He spent eight seasons at UNC Asheville, including the last three as associate head coach under former head coach Julie Torbett. Santos assisted in all phases of the Bulldog program, including recruiting, on-court coaching, travel and pre-game setup. While at Asheville, Santos helped the Bulldogs to a 135-124 overall record. The Bulldogs reached the Big South Conference Champi-onship match three times during his tenure and won the regular-season championship in 2002. The 2002 team was the most improved team in the country that season as Asheville fi nished with a 26-8 record.

Santos coached the Biltmore Juniors for more than fi ve years, leading the club to national fi nishes in each of the past fi ve years andchampion-ships at the Asheville Hi Neighbor tournament in 2003 and 2004.

Santos has been playing volleyball all his life beginning with club teams in Rio de Janeiro. He moved to Reno, Nev. in 1990 and starred for the Uni-versity of Nevada-Reno club team from 1992-1996 where he was a setter. His club team was ranked fi fth nationally by USA Today. In 1998, Santos played for the Reno Volleyball Club team as both a setter and outside hit-ter, leading the club to the USAV Nationals in Tucson, Ariz.

His coaching experience includes stops in Brazil, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland and Reno. Santos coached the Stjarnan Club team in Reykja-vik, Iceland. He led the club to a 7-3 record in 2000 and a fi rst place fi nish in the fall tournament. The team also fi nished runner-up in the Icelandic Cup and Icelandic Championships.

Santos has also worked with the men’s and women’s Brazilian na-tional teams, which are among the best in the world. He earned his degree in the spring of 2007 from UNC Asheville.

Santos is married to the former Nathalie Steffen. Nathalie played vol-leyball for the Bulldogs from 1993 through 1996 and is a 1997 graduate of UNC Asheville. Nathalie’s sister Elissa also played for the Bulldogs and is a member of the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame. Frederico and Nathalie are the proud parents of two children, Gabriel and Tatiana.

Lydee BenoitSecond Year • Eckerd, 2011

Former Eckerd All-American Lydee Benoit is in her second year as an assistant coach with the UNC Asheville volleyball program.

Benoit came to Asheville after serving as an assistant coach at Val-dosta State in 2011. She enjoyed a tremendous career at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“We are delighted to have Lydee in our program,” declared Bulldog head coach Frederico Santos. “She brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to our team. Lydee was a great player who I got a chance to watch fi rst-hand when I was at Barry University and coached against her. She was a tremendous player who always made her team better.”

Benoit did an outstanding job in her fi rst coaching stop at Valdosta. She helped lead the Blazers to the best season in Head Coach Sia Poyer’s tenure with a 21-11 record and 7-3 record in the All-Gulf South Confer-ence. Four players earned All-Conference honors as VSU went 9-2 on the road and 4-1 in fi ve-set matches.

While at Eckerd, Benoit starred for the Triton volleyball team, earn-ing a number of awards in four seasons at EC. She was an All-American, a team captain and a three-time team most valuable player. From the out-side hitter position, Benoit set the record for career kills at Eckerd.

As a player, she made an immediate impact in the Sunshine State Conference when she was named Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year. Benoit continued her success throughout her collegiate career, earning all-conference honors all four seasons.

During her playing days, Benoit not only made time for class (four-time athletic director’s honor roll honoree), but also coaching. As a stu-dent, she served as a camp counselor for multiple volleyball camps as well as a student assistant on the Eckerd coaching staff. Benoit also worked as the head coach for the St. Pete Hurricanes, a club team for 15 year-olds. Benoit attended Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, Fla. where she lettered in varsity volleyball for four seasons. She helped lead the school to the 2006 Class 4A State Championship. Benoit was named Player of the Year, fi rst team All-State, All-Country and All-Conference fol-lowing her senior campaign.

In addition, Benoit also served on the staff of Boston College’s Sum-mer Volleyball Camp during the summer of 2011. Learning new philoso-phies under BC Head Coach Chris Campbell and Assistant Coach Edgard Da Gama E Silva, Benoit worked with a reputable staff from a combination of Division I and Division II programs across the country. The camp wel-comed players throughout the United States as well as across the globe, including Africa and Germany.

UNC Asheville’s Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2003 and has had nine classes inducted. A total of 22 athletes and administrators have been enshrined. Of those 22 inductees, four are former volleyball players: Ilona Fekete, Danielle Meyer, Elissa Steffen and Loralee Smith. One is a former coach, Lisa Rhodes (inducted in 2012).

Ilona Fekete Thimmer (1990-92)Inducted in 2003

Ilona Fekete Thimmer established a tradition of great volleyball at UNC Asheville from 1990-92. She led the Bulldogs to three straight Big South Conference regular-season titles and two straight tournament crowns. She also led the nation in blocks as a sophomore in 1990 and was among the nation’s leaders in that category the next two seasons. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native was the Big South Player of the Year in 1990 and was an all-conference and all-tournament selection for three seasons. She is the school’s all-time leader in total blocks and block solos. Thimmer was inducted into the inaugural class of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame. She and her family reside in Vero Beach, Fla.

Danielle Meyer Harrison (1990-93)Inducted in 2007

Danielle Meyer Harrison was the Bulldogs’ starting setter for four years and is third all-time on the career assist list with 5,187. She helped lead UNC Asheville to three straight Big South Conference regular-season championships and two tournament titles. She was the Co-MVP of the 1992 Big South Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs were 35-6 against Big South opponents during her career. She was an all-conference selection twice and was part of the 1991 UNC Asheville team that was selected to the National Invitational Volleyball Championships in Dayton, Ohio. She and her family reside in Illionis.

Elissa Steffen Mount (1991-94)Inducted in 2008

Elissa Steffen Mount enjoyed a sensational career for the Bulldogs. She is UNC Asheville’s all-time career leader in three different categories. Elissa is the all-time leader in kills (1,775), digs (2,179) and attempts (4,993). She was an all-conference performer as a junior and senior and was a part of two Big South Conference championship teams as a freshman and sophomore. Elissa helped lead UNC Asheville to its fi rst ever post-season tournament as a Division I school when the Bulldogs were selected to participate in the 1991 National Invitational Volleyball Championships. The Bulldogs won the 1990, 1991 and 1992 regular-season titles and compiled a 22-1 Big South regular-season record during those years. Counting Big South Tournament play, Rhodes teams were 29-2. In 1991, Asheville was awarded a berth to the National Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. The Bulldogs were the fi rst volleyball program in Big South history to go to a post-season tournament. In 1992, Asheville fi nished with a 32-6 record and became the fi rst team in league history to go unbeaten in the regular season and in the league tournament.

Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of ‘Developing Leaders Through Athletics.

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s fi rst Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. ‘Buddy’ Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its fi rst automatic bid — receiving an automatic qualifi er to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the fi nest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the fi rst time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also

spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & fi eld in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidifi ed Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its fi rst live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the ‘Sweet 16’ in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & fi eld, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the fi rst men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the fi rst women’s golf program advance to the national fi nals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team fi ve consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions fi nish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team fi nish in an NCAA event (fi fth in 2007).

In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the fi rst time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fi fth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the fi rst time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its fi rst automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament,

39

Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the fi rst in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record fi ve individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans.

This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -- for the fi rst time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the fi rst time since 2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play.

Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of fi ve former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualifi ed for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago.

The Conference’s tagline, ‘Developing Leaders Through Athletics’ was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 ‘Best of the Best’ moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s fi rst 25 years. The Conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double fi gure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s fi rst three decades of existence.

He majored in literature, but it was his history classes and the magic of the mountains of nearby Madison County that inspired Wiley Cash’s first novel, “A Land More Kind Than Home.”

Cash’s novel debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list last year and promptly won praise by reviewers in USA Today, Vanity Fair and O Magazine.

“My Appalachian history professor at UNC Asheville, Dan Pierce, made the mountains come alive for me, their history, their people, culture and mystery.”

Degrees from UNC Asheville have launched thousands of successful careers, like that of Wasim Al-Abed, sales manager for FLS Energy of Asheville, one of the nation’s fastest-growing solar energy firms.

This rapidly evolving industry needs employees who can think critically and solve problems that have never been encountered before. So when FLS Energy needed a team leader who could make the links between economics, science, policy and environmental impact, they turned to this UNC Asheville business and marketing graduate. That’s the power of the liberal arts.

“At UNC Asheville,” says Al-Abed, “I learned with students whose creativity and passion were out of this world.”

As a businessperson, she’s a local leader. As a philanthropist, she is a force of nature. And Jennifer Mayer’s achievements are far more inspiring when you know her backstory.

By the age of 16, Mayer already had lived a hard life. She was waitressing double shifts to support herself, and she could only read at the second-grade level. But at the urging of a close friend, she enrolled in a literacy program and eventually earned a high school GED.

Later, Mayer enrolled at UNC Asheville where she pursued a degree in psychology.

Today, she is the owner and CEO of Charlotte Street Computers, one of Asheville’s busiest independent computer shops.

Asheville’s prime location in the spectacular mountains of Western North Carolina and the high quality of life enjoyed by residents

make it a place where lifestyle complements business opportunity. The area shows consistent and steady growth with approximately 244,000 people in Buncombe County, The metro unemployment rate at 8.4 percent is the third lowest of the 14 North Carolina metros, following Durham-Chapel Hill and Raleigh-Cary Metros. Average income—$59,943 in the Asheville Metro area.

Culture and EnvironmentThe cultural accolades for Asheville complement the dramatic scenery that sets the region apart. Western North Carolina enjoys elevations ranging from 1,500 feet in the valleys to 6,684 feet at Mount

Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway winds along the Blue Ridge Mountains, through Asheville, and enters the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The area’s mountain location doesn’t mean that it isn’t accessible to many major cities. Charlotte, N.C. is an hour and a half away and Atlanta, Ga. is a about four hours from Asheville.

Downtown AshevilleArtists and street musicians, more than 30 galleries and boutiques, fine dining, Art Deco architecture, coffee shops and live music give Asheville a vibrancy rarely found in a city of its size. Little wonder Asheville, and its edgy energy, is one of the South’s biggest tourist destinations.

Men’s Basketball The best program in the Big South Conference over the past six seasons. Asheville has gone to post-season play three times during that period. The Bulldogs have gone to the NIT (2008) once and twice gone to the NCAA Tournament (2011, 2012). Asheville’s overall record during that time is 113-82 (.579). Our record inside the Big South Conference is 68-34 (.667). We own wins over four BCS schools—South Carolina, Auburn, Utah and St. John’s in the last six years. The men’s basketball program has a legacy of strong coaches including Bob Hartman, Jerry Green, Don Doucette, Randy Wiel and Eddie Biedenbach who led the Bulldogs to four Big South Conference Championship Titles.

Volleyball One of the most consistent programs in the Big South over the last 11 years. From 2002 through last year, Asheville has posted eight winning seasons and never finished lower than sixth place in the Big South Conference during that period. We have two Big South regular-season championships and been to the league title game three times. The overall record during the past 11 seasons is 194-142 (.577). In league play, the record is 104-61 (.631). Coach Fredrico Santos leads the team. A UNC Asheville graduate, Santos has extensive international coaching experience with stops in Brazil, Iceland, Poland and Switzerland before returning home to his alma mater.

Women’s Soccer Another consistent program over the years. From 1995 through last season, our women’s soccer program has won two Big South Conference championships (1995 & 2006), two regular-season

championships (2004 & 2005) and advanced to the league championship game seven different times (1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006). This season team won three of its final four matches and had two players recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association for their work in the classroom. The team is led by Michelle Demko, an outstanding coach, who was selected in the spring of 2012 to help train the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National team and as an assistant coach for the Under-23 Women’s National Team. Men’s Tennis The Bulldog men’s tennis program has enjoyed its best success in more than a decade the past two seasons. Last season we finished in second place in the Big South, the highest regular-season finish the Bulldogs have ever had. On the academic side, they have been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association three times in the last four years. Under the direction of Coach Lise Gregory and former LSU standout Tom Hand, we have recorded winning seasons the past two years and will be competing for a Big South Conference championship this year

Women’s Tennis Our women’s tennis team will enjoy its third winning season in the last five years this season. Head Coach Lise Gregory is one of the top coaches in the country and has rebuilt the program two different times. Our team this season is made up of sophomores and freshmen and won more matches than last season at the half-way point of the year. On the academic side, this program has been recognized for its work in the classroom by the ITA for five consecutive years.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Both cross country programs have been steadily improving under the direction of Western Carolina graduate Jesse Norman. This past year had both teams finishing in fifth place in the 12-team Big South Conference. It marked the best finish for both squads in eight years.

Track and Field Both programs have had some great individual performers over the past three years and are slowly building solid programs. Jesse Norman is the coach for these programs as well. Natalie Pearson went to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2010 and 2011 in the 200 meters and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors. She just missed qualifying for the Great Britain Olympic team last summer. This past year saw Milan Ristic qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in the hurdles and finished 13th overall. Coach Jesse Norman’s excellent leadership led him to be named Big South Coach of the year in 2011.

Baseball UNC Asheville Bulldogs Baseball has improved steadily under the leadership of head coach Tom Smith. Last year, we won 25 games and finished in fourth place in the Big South Conference after being a preseason pick to finish in last place. Highlights included winning a series at College of Charleston late in the season and 12 conference victories. We presently have one player in the major leagues in Ty Wigginton and one who went to spring training with the Florida Marlins in Kevin Mattison. We have two other players – Ryan Dull and Justin Schumer – who are in the minor leagues.

Women’s Basketball We are going through a rebuilding phase after winning the Big South Championship in 2007. We have hired former Florida assistant and Waynesville native Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick as our head coach. She inherited a tough situation this past year and then had five potential starters suffer season-ending injuries. However, our team battled hard to the end without anyone quitting the team. We believe our program is in great shape and will be turning the corner immediately as she and her staff signed four excellent recruits in the fall.

Women’s Swimming We brought women’s swimming back after having a co-ed program in the mid-70s. We are members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. In our first year with just eight swimmers, we finished in ninth place at the championship meet as we finished in front of four others teams with a full roster. In the fall semester, the team was honored by College Swim Coaches Association of America for a 3.22 GPA. Former College of Charleston MVP Elizabeth Lykins leads the team.

Men’s Soccer We expect to be better in men’s soccer this fall than we have been the past few years. They have certainly done the work in the classroom. Junior Bobby Castro was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Men's Soccer Division I team by the College Sports Information Directors of America last fall. In addition, they were given a NSCAA Team Academic Award last fall with a 3.16 GPA. Matt Kern is in his third year as head coach. He enjoyed a standout career at Hartwick college including 2 trips to the NCAA final four.

Dr. Anne Ponder be-came the sixth Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville in Oc-tober 2005 after serving for 10 years as president of Col-by-Sawyer College in New London, N.H. A nationally known expert on strategic planning, she began her UNC Asheville tenure by leading a campus-wide collaboration to create a dynamic and via-ble strategic plan and revised mission statement; she then established a dashboard that measures UNC Asheville’s progress toward the stra-tegic plan goals, with a con-tinued emphasis on quality and sustainability. With this

focus, UNC Asheville has made major strides as a national leader in the liberal arts and has become one of the top choices for students seeking a rigorous and multi-faceted educational experience.

During Chancellor Ponder’s tenure, the university was chosen as the fi rst national headquarters for the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. Several new majors from anthropology to religious studies, art history to jazz and contemporary music have been added to the curriculum. The aca-demic profi le and diversity of the student body, as well as the proportion of students living on campus, increased to their highest levels during this time. The university received its 10-year re-affi rmation of accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 2012 with no major fi ndings, one recommendation, and high praise from the assessment committee.

A hallmark of Chancellor Ponder’s tenure at UNC Asheville is her commitment to strengthening the university’s outreach and partnerships with Western North Carolina communities and businesses, as well as with sister UNC institutions. She has encouraged innovative collaboration that resulted in a UNC-Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy satellite program in Asheville. New partnerships with local governments, scientifi c agencies and nonprofi t organizations have resulted in agreements with Mission Health System, the City of Asheville, the Renaissance Computing Institute and others for enhanced learning and research opportunities for students and faculty. The university is a founding member of the Asheville-Buncombe Regional Sports Commission, a major contributor to the re-gion’s economic development. This emphasis on collaboration also led to the cultivation, with other campus and community leaders, of some of the largest multi-million dollar donations in the university’s history. An Eco-nomic Impact Study completed for 2012 revealed that UNC Asheville’s economic impact on the region was $268 million.

Chancellor Ponder is a national leader in higher education garner-ing accolades for her athletic administration and academic leadership as well. In 2013, she received the inaugural Van Ummersen Presidential Leadership Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, in recognition of her demonstrated leadership and promotion of women’s opportunities in athletics administration and coaching. Under her tenure, UNC Asheville added a women’s swimming team, bringing the university’s total to 15 Division I athletic teams, with an average academic progress rate of 983 out of a possible 1,000.

In 2012, Chancellor Ponder was named a fellow by the National Col-legiate Honors Council, a national professional association of colleges and universities with honors programs. She is a past president of the organi-zation, and she founded and directed Elon University’s Honors Program during her fi rst faculty appointment. She is a former faculty member of Harvard Institutes for Higher Education, is past president of the Southern University Conference, and wrote the chapter on strategic planning in the

American Council on Education’s book Leading America’s Branch Cam-puses.

Chancellor Ponder has overseen the largest building program in UNC Asheville’s history – most recently Overlook Hall, home to more than 300 students. The new residence hall boosts the number of students living on campus from 35 percent to more than 40 percent and is one of the “greenest” buildings on campus with cutting-edge sustainability fea-tures including geothermal heating and cooling.

Other major building projects have included the New Hall class-room building, Sam Millar Facilities Management Complex, Zeis Science and Multimedia Building, and the Wilma M. Sherrill Center, which houses the North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness and Kimmel Arena. Major renovations have been made to Rhoades Hall and several residence halls. These efforts, combined with countless others across campus, have earned the university repeated recognition as a model of sustainability among UNC institutions and across the state.

In 2010, the university opened the Janice W. Brumit Pisgah House, which serves as a location for university-sponsored events, meetings re-ceptions and dinners, and also is the Chancellor’s residence. The $2.9-mil-lion multi-purpose building, required of all UNC campuses, was funded by private donations.

In 2011, UNC Asheville celebrated the dedication of the Wilma M. Sherrill Center, which houses academic and outreach programs focused on disease prevention and healthy living, as well as the 3,800-seat Kimmel Arena. This $41 million project was funded through a $35-million state ap-propriation in 2004 and an additional $6 million in private gifts and grants. It is the largest construction project ever undertaken at UNC Asheville.

The university also expanded its campus boundaries under Chan-cellor Ponder’s leadership, purchasing several nearby properties including the 10-acre Rhoades property in 2008, which was the fi rst major gift/purchase of property for the campus since moving to its current location in 1961. The property now hosts a community garden and residence for the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, both of which are favorite gather-ing places for students. Other acquisitions have included a 10-acre parcel adjacent to campus on Broadway Avenue which is being developed as a part of Asheville’s greenway to link campus and downtown. In 2013, UNC Asheville acquired adjacent acreage and the health facility formerly owned by MAHEC on W.T. Weaver Boulevard, which will house an expanded Stu-dent Health and Counseling Center and the offi ces for University Ad-vancement and Alumni Relations.

Chancellor Ponder earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral de-grees in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was the fi rst woman and fi rst pre-tenure professor at Elon University to receive the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching. During her nine years at Elon, she taught English and communications. She then held faculty and administrative posts at Guilford College in North Caro-lina, where she was an associate professor of English and interdisciplinary studies and served as associate academic dean. In her next appointment at Kenyon College in Ohio, she served as professor of English and drama, academic dean, and vice president for information technology. In 1995, she was selected to become president at Colby-Sawyer College, a private liberal arts college in New Hampshire.

In addition to serving UNC Asheville, Chancellor Ponder is a mem-ber of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce Board, Mission Health Systems Audit Committee, and the Asheville Children’s Welfare League. She also serves as a member of the HUB Community Economic Develop-ment Alliance.

A native of Asheville, Chancellor Ponder is the daughter of the late Eleanor and Herschel Ponder, both of whom traced their Asheville family roots to the 1780s. She is married to award-winning writer and publisher Christopher Brookhouse.

Janet R. Cone is in her 10th year as Director of Athletics at UNC Asheville. She also serves the school as Senior Administrator for University Enterprises.

In June, she was one of just 28 Directors of Athletics to be named as Under Armour AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

This past year saw

many accomplishments under Cone’s leadership.

The school revived women’s swimming at UNC Asheville. It marked the fi rst time the athletics department had added a sport in 20 years. Her leadership helped bring the Charlotte Bobcats NBA basketball team to the Sherrill Center and Kimmel Arena for their fall training camp. More than 60 percent of UNC Asheville’s student-athletes in the 2012-13 academic year had a GPA of 3.0 or above. The 2011-12 year was highlighted by the men’s basketball team’s winning the Big South Conference championship for the second year in a row. The Bulldogs set a school record for conference and overall wins. Asheville advanced to the NCAA Tournament where it nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets in NCAA history when the 16th-seeded Bulldogs lost a close game to top-seeded Syracuse. In addition, the school successfully hosted the Big South Conference men’s basketball tournament with a national television audience and sellout crowd watching the championship game in the school’s brand-new Kimmel Arena. Cone oversaw the successful opening of the Wilma Sherrill Center which houses the Kimmel Arena. She worked to bring the top-ranked UNC Chapel Hill men’s basketball team to open Kimmel against the Bulldogs in a game that was nationally televised. That game was also sold out. The Sherrill Center had more than 100,000 visitors in its fi rst year as its hosted various events from concerts to graduation. Other successes included the men’s tennis team’s fi nishing in second place in the Big South Conference, its highest league fi nish ever, the volleyball team’s advancing to the semifi nals of the Big South Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years, and the women’s tennis, men’s tennis and women’s track and fi eld teams being honored for their work in the classroom. Cone guided the athletic department through a successful certifi cation process by the NCAA. In addition, she brought back women’s swimming as a varsity sport for the fi rst time in more than 35 years.

In the 2010-11 year, Cone saw the UNC Asheville men’s basketball team win the Big South Conference championship and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In addition, the Bulldog women’s indoor track and fi eld squad fi nished in third place, the highest fi nish in school history. Senior sprinter Natalie Pearson made her second appearance in the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field meet. Four years ago, Chancellor Anne Ponder appointed Cone to the position of Senior Administrator for University Enterprises. In this position, Cone oversees the Sherrill Center, manages specifi c community relationships and serves as a member of UNC Asheville’s major gifts team. She is a member of the Chancellor’s Senior Staff. In 2009, Cone helped to create the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission to bring athletic events to the Asheville area. Her leadership helped secure the return of the Southern Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournament to Asheville starting in March of 2012. Student-Athletes have excelled in the classroom under Cone’s leadership. In 2004, she created the Athletic Director’s 3.0 + Club which recognizes student-athletes who achieve a 3.0 or better grade-point average each semester. More than 1,000 student-athletes have made the club during Cone’s nine years.

During that same time period, more than 900 student-athletes were named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.

Cone has overseen construction projects that have dramatically improved the facilities in which UNC Asheville’s Bulldog student-athletes compete and train. (1) The Wilma Sherrill Center/Kimmel Arena was completed in the spring of 2011. Funded partly through a $35 million state appropriation, Cone helped raise more than $ 7 million dollars in private funds to construct the Kimmel Arena, a major convocation space that will accommodate larger group events than the campus has been able to host before. Among other things, this will allow the university to host its own graduation, attract major speakers and performances, and have a new home for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. (2) Renovation and repairs to the Karl Straus Track began in the spring of 2009. Cone helped raised more than one million dollars in private funding for the track project. (3) Cone negotiated a partnership with Crowne Plaza Hotel and Resort for construction of a new Bulldog tennis facility which has indoor courts, composition courts and six hard courts that were completed in the fall of 2009. The facility has been the home of Bulldog men’s and women’s tennis for the past three seasons, and this past spring hosted the Big South Conference men’s and women’s tennis championships for the fi rst time in school history. Highlights of the 2007-08 year included the men’s basketball team being co-regular season champions of the Big South Conference and earning a bid to the National Invitational Tournament, making UNC Asheville the fi rst men’s basketball team in Big South history to receive a bid to the NIT. Cone helped the department successfully host the Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament and Women’s Basketball Tournament in back-to-back weekends.

In October of 2007, Cone was named the 2007 Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. Chancellor Anne Ponder was delighted to see Cone receive the award. “Janet Cone’s inspirational leadership has set a very high standard for our student-athletes and our coaches, all of whom continue to be winners both on and off the fi eld,” stated Ponder. “We are thrilled that she is being recognized in this way for her vision, her energy, and her tenacity, qualities our University benefi t from each and every day.”

In 2006-07, three different UNC Asheville teams won Big South Conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In May 2006, the baseball team completed an amazing run with its fi rst ever championship and a trip to Clemson for the NCAA Regional. In the fall of 2006, the women’s soccer team became the fi rst women’s team in school history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament when the Bulldogs won the league title and earned a spot against topseed UNC Chapel Hill in the College Cup. In March 2007, the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team won its fi rst ever Big South Conference championship. Asheville advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time where it took on Final Four-bound LSU.

The South Carolina native has promulgated a signifi cant increase in corporate sponsorships and Bulldog Athletic Association donations, critical to an organization that is not allowed to receive state funds of any kind. She has also overseen a new partnership with the Asheville City and Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Departments, an improved Athletics website, and the implementation of internet broadcasts and video-streaming for six different sports.

Cone has been tapped by the NCAA and the Big South Conference to serve on several key committees. In the Big South, she is on the committees for Budget, Compliance, Ad Hoc Committee on Publicity and Promotions, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Men’s Soccer and Tennis. In the spring of 2006, Cone was named to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Issues Committee. In September of 2008, she began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council. In July 2006, the Summerville, S.C. native was one of just 14 female athletic administrators to be picked by the NCAA/NACWAA to attend The Institute of Athletics Executives in Denver. In September 2008, she began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council.

Other highlights of Cone’s tenure include the development of a new Athletics Logo and a partnership with the Asheville City and Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Departments.

In the spring of 2006, she was named as an Outstanding Executive Manager by the Asheville-Buncombe Excellence in Public Service.

Cone is extremely active in the community, and in the summer of the 2006, she helped lead a group of community leaders to bring the Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament

to UNC Asheville’s Justice Center in 2007 and 2008. Cone also initiated the “Our Turn to Play” women’s luncheon for local business, civic, and community leaders the past two years. In addition, Cone was recognized as one of 10 Women to Know in Western North Carolina.

Cone came to Asheville from Samford University where she served as the fi rst head women’s basketball coach beginning in 1996. She coached the Bulldogs for fi ve seasons and, in 1999-2000, the team posted a 19-10 record. Cone was named Assistant Athletics Director before being promoted to Associate Athletics Director in 2003.

Prior to Samford, Cone served as the fi rst full-time Assistant Athletics Director, and the head women’s basketball and volleyball coach at Saint Leo University in Florida. She also directed basketball programs at Western Carolina University and Mars Hill College. Cone began her career as a teacher and coach in Gilbert, South Carolina. She coached against UNC Asheville eight times in her career and had a 5-3 record against the Bulldogs.

Cone was born and raised in Summerville, S.C. She was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team and was an all-conference performer at Summerville HS for two years. Cone was inducted into that school’s Hall of Fame in 2007. She graduated magna cum laude from Furman University in 1978 and was named Physical Education Student of the Year while lettering in basketball and fi eld hockey as an undergraduate. While earning her Master’s from the University of South Carolina in 1986, she completed her studies with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

A life-long learner, Cone is a 2003 graduate of the NACWAA/HERS Institute of Administrative Advancement. She is a member of NACDA, NACWAA, NCAA Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association, Women’s Sports Foundation, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
