Overview: Sophomore who earned valuable experience as a freshman...did not play as much as a sophomore but provided depth in both singles and doubles…hard worker… attended Davie County HS in Mocksville. 2010: Played in two singles matches and was leading at Furman before the match was called at #6 flight…participated in three doubles matches and went 1-2 at #3 flight…teamed up with Nathan White to pick up a win against Winston-Salem State…played #3 with Thomas Rees against regionally-ranked Campbell and fell in tie-breaker. 2009: Played in 10 matches in singles and posted three victories...played at both #5 and #6 flights...earned seven matches in doubles and picked up two victo-ries...teamed up with Nathan White at #3 doubles to win conference match vs. Presbyterian. Jonas Brobeck

Sophomore / 6-1 / 160 Universal School / Stockholm, Sweden Overview: Did a solid job for the Bulldogs as a freshman...native of Sweden who was a key player for UNC Asheville in 2010 in both singles and doubles...first name is pronounced yoh-nas. 2010: Played both at #3 and #4 in singles….compiled eight wins in singles play with three wins at #3 and five victories at #4…won three of his last four singles matches…enjoyed an excellent year in doubles as the played #1 with Matt Wais-sen…compiled an 11-8 doubles record with solid 4-3 worksheet in league play…won six of last eight doubles matches. 2009: Played at #2, #3 and #4 flights as a freshman in singles...earned eight wins in singles, including three at #2...won nine matches in doubles...played primarily at #1 flight with Mauricio Correa in doubles as the duo combined to win six matches.


Adrien Langeard

Freshman / 6-1 / 162 Caen, France Overview: Talented freshman who struggled with injuries at the start of season before coming on at the end of the year…will only get better with his career and compete for all-conference honors in the future…came to Asheville from France...enjoyed an excellent fall as he won his flight at Brevard Invitational and then competed in ITA Midwest Tourney in Chapel Hill where he split two matches. 2010: Began the spring season playing #1 but was injured after second match and didn’t play singles for part of the year…played at #2, #3 and #4 flight and compiled a 7-6 singles record…won three conference matches in singles…teamed up with Thomas Rees at #3 flight and finished with 9-8 doubles record, including 4-3 mark in conference play…the duo won six of last eight doubles matches…went three sets six different times in singles and went 3-3.

Ryan Matthews

Freshman / 5-10 / 173 NW Guilford HS / Greensboro, N.C. Overview: Freshman from NW Guilford HS who was a solid player in both sin-gles and doubles in 2010...showed promise in the fall with wins in each tourna-ment Asheville participated in...won the C Flight at Brevard Invitational in fall. 2010: Primarily played at #5 and #6 singles during the season and went 6-7 with three wins at both #5 and #6…picked up impressive three-set win at N.C. State as he won 13-11 in tie-breaker…won 6-0, 6-0 against Winston-Salem State.


Nicolai Nonnenbroich

Sophomore / 6-0 / 160 Mougins, France Overview: Talented player from France who had a great senior season in 2010…battled back from an ankle injury to be the Bulldogs top player this season. 2010: Ended up being UNC Asheville’s top player and played at #1 most of the season…earned all-conference honors for his play….played at four different flights (1-4) during the year with 6-6 mark coming at #1…went 4-3 in three-set matches…teamed up with Nathan White at #2 doubles and compiled a 9-9 re-cord, including 4-3 mark in Big South matches…ended the season on a roll in doubles play with five straight wins, including upset victories over Radford and Coastal Carolina. 2009: Played at both #1 and #2 singles before injuring his ankle midway through the year...earned four wins in singles play...teamed up with Joe May to win seven doubles matches during the year.

Thomas Rees

Sophomore / 6-6 / 175 Oraitwich Spa HS / Worestershire, Great Britain Overview: Transfer from Tusculum who was a key player for the Bulldogs right away...native of Worestershire Great Britain...had a solid fall as he teamed up with Adrien Langeard to win B Flight Doubles at Brevard Invitational. 2010: Played at both #5 and #6 singles this year and posted a 9-11 record…went 6-4 at #6 flight…won three matches in Big South action…won four of his last six singles matches…earned impressive non-conference victory over Georgia State late in the year… teamed up with Adrien Langeard at #3 flight and finished with 9-8 doubles record, including 4-3 mark in conference play…the duo won six of last eight doubles matches. Before UNC Asheville: Competed at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn. last year...went 12-12 in singles play and helped lead Pioneers to berth in South At-lantic Conference championship match...attended Oraitwich Spa HS & Specialist Sports College in Worcestershire, England... coached by Mike Crooks and Allen Benbow... school tennis captain...won eight singles titles in 2006-07... club cham-pion...ranked No. 96 in the nation.

Freshman / 6-2 / 157 Basingstoke, Great Britain Overview: Freshman from Great Britain who will be an immediate impact in the Bulldog line-up in both singles and doubles...great athlete who should be one of Asheville's top singles player this year...had an excellent fall and was one of two players to compete in ITA Regional in Chapel Hill where he lost close three-set match to William Parker of North Carolina. 2010: Played most of the year at #2 singles and went 6-7 in that position…also won two matches at #1 flight…finished strong as he won of his last five singles matches, including upset win over Coastal Carolina in BSC Tournament…lost close match in tie-breaker at #1 flight to nationally-ranked Furman… enjoyed an excellent year in doubles as played #1 with Jonas Brobeck…compiled an 11-8 doubles record with solid 4-3 worksheet in league play…won six of last eight dou-bles matches.

Nathan White

Junior / 6-0 / 161 Spain Park HS / Hoover, Ala. Overview: Has served as captain of team as a sophomore and junior…enjoyed an excellent year in doubles this year…named to Big South All-Academic team both as a sophomore and junior. 2010: Played some at singles but played in every match in doubles…posted three wins in singles play with a victory at #4, #5 and #6 flight… teamed up with Nicola Nonnenbroich at #2 doubles and compiled a 9-9 record, including 4-3 mark in Big South matches…ended the season on a roll in doubles play with five straight wins, including upset victories over Radford and Coastal Carolina. 2009: Picked up eight wins in singles as a sophomore, including three victories in BSC matches...played at #3, #4 and #5 flights and went 4-4 at #5...teamed with Alexander Greer to win six matches in doubles. 2008: Posted a 4-5 singles record at flight six...did a solid job in doubles as he teamed up with Joe May to produce a 4-4 record and with Tyler Begg to go 2-3. Louise Bottomly

Senior / 5-5 Rastrick HS / West Yorkshire, England Overview: Enjoyed an excellent career for the Bulldogs and was a real leader for the pro-gram both on and off the court…helped lead Asheville program to 14 wins, second most in school history as a senior….excellent student who earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic team for tennis as a senior…was one of four seniors on this year’s team. 2010: Finished with a superb 13-3 singles record as she went 10-3 at #6 flight with 2-0 mark at #5 and 1-0 record at #4…ended her career in singles action with five consecutive wins and went 9-1 in her last 10 matches…picked up a impressive win against Diana Nav-rotska of Atlantic Sun champion ETSU in straight sets…two of her three singles losses came in three sets…teamed up with Devon Cavanaugh at #2 doubles to go 14-7, including 4-3 mark in league play. 2009: Played most of the year at #5 singles and had a 10-9 overall record that included two wins in Big South Conference play...went 8-8 when playing at #5 and 2-1 at #4...did a nice job in doubles with Devon Cavanaugh as the duo combined to go 12-8 at #2 doubles. 2008: Played at #2 and #3 singles and produced a 6-12 record...won five matches at #2...produced an 8-9 doubles record as she teamed up with Leslie Smith and Nicole Schon. 2007: Played right away as a freshman and produced 6-10 singles record while playing at #2...went 7-9 in doubles play and teamed up with Rachel Rhoney to go 6-6 at the #1 flight.

Sarah Brinkley

Senior / 5-5 Western Carolina / Indianapolis, Ind. Overview: Overview: Joined the UNC Asheville program after transferring in from Western Carolina...also played at MEAC power Florida A&M…enjoyed a good fall for the Bulldogs and was a key player for Asheville in singles action. 2010: Produced a 7-5 record in singles with 3-3 record at #4 flight, 3-1 worksheet at #5 and 1-1 record at #6…won two matches without losing a game…battled hard in losses to Big South regular-season champion Charleston Southern and regionally-ranked Campbell and fell in three sets…played in one doubles match with Tania Mateva and won easily.


Devon Cavanaugh

Sophomore / 5-6 Maclay HS / Tallahassee, Fla. Overview: Talented sophomore who enjoyed an excellent ear and will only get better during her career...enjoyed a solid prep career at Maclay School in Talla-hassee, Fla….very good student. 2010: Enjoyed a great year for the Bulldogs in both singles and doubles…went 12-5 in singles matches with 4-2 mark against Big South Conference opponents…played primarily at #3 singles and went 5-4…also played five matches at #2 and was a perfect 5-0…two of her singles’ losses came in three sets to regionally-ranked teams Campbell and ETSU…won three-set thriller at ASU that gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 victory…teamed up with Louise Bottomley at #2 doubles and had 14-7 worksheet…had 4-3 mark in league matches…won six straight matches mid-way through the season…lost in a tie-breaker to regionally-ranked Furman. 2009: Played very well as a freshman...went 12-4 in singles while playing the #3 position...played four matches at #2 and went 2-2...teamed up with Louise Bot-tomley in doubles to post at 12-8 record at the #2 doubles position...went 5-3 in singles during Big South Conference matches.

Britney Cloer

Junior / 5-3 UNC Greensboro / Hendersonville, N.C. Overview: Transfer from UNC Greensboro who made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs this season...enjoyed a solid fall with good results...native of Hender-sonville who attended West Henderson HS and had great prep career. 2010: Registered a 13-5 singles record playing primarily at #3 and #4 flights…went 5-2 and #3 and 5-2 at #4…also went 2-0 at #5…finished with a 4-2 BSC mark…won nine straight matches midway through the season…won key three-set match vs. Gardner-Webb that helped give Bulldogs the victory…her 13 wins tied for the team lead…teamed up with Nicole Schon at #3 doubles and produced an 8-8 record.


Chelsea Hall

Freshman / 5-7 Mason HS / Mason, Mich. Overview: Freshman who will give the Bulldogs some options this spring...enjoyed a solid fall...went to Mason HS in Mason, Mich. 2010: Did not play in a match during the spring season.

Tania Mateva

Senior / 5-4 Escoloa IPSE (Barcelona, Spain) / Reading, England Overview: Joined the UNC Asheville program in January of 2007 after training and studying at the Segio Brugera Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain...jumped into the starting line-up in both singles and doubles for the past three years…excellent student…was one of four seniors on this year’s club. 2010: Played in three singles matches and went 2-1 with wins against Mars Hill and Winston-Salem State…played with three different partners in doubles and registered a 3-1 record…picked up a win with Nicole Schon vs. Brevard…won a doubles match with Britney Cloer at North Carolina Central and teamed up with Sarah Brinkley to defeat North Georgia. 2009: Played most of the season at #6 singles and produced a 9-8 re-cord...played two matches at #5 and went 1-1...teamed up in doubles with Nicole Schon and went 6-4, winning two matches in conference play. 2008: Posted a 7-10 singles record and played in three different flights...went un-beaten at #6 flight with 3-0 mark...teamed up with Whitney Abbott to produce 4-5 doubles record at #3 flight. 2007: Played in three different singles flights and produced three victories at #5...went 6-9 in doubles action...teamed up with Leslie Smith at #2 flight and fin-ished with 5-8 record.


Jackie McGuirk

Freshman / 5-4 Bridgewater-Raynham Regional HS / Raynham, Mass. Overview: Freshman who provided depth for the Bulldogs in 2010...attended Bridgewater-Raynham HS in Raynham, Mass....enjoyed a solid fall season…hard worker. 2010: Played in one singles match and was ready to play as she defeated Mars Hill opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

Nicole Schon

Junior / 5-4 American Heritage HS / San Diego, Calif. Overview: Joined the UNC Asheville program in January of 2008 with her sister, Stephanie...has been a consistent and productive player during her career. 2010: Tied for the team lead in singles wins with 13…played primarily at #5 sin-gles but played some at #4 and two matches at #6…led team in BSC wins with 5-2 worksheet…finished her season with three straight singles victories…had 8-5 record at #5 and 4-1 mark at #4…won three-set match vs. Radford in last regular-season match of the year to help Bulldogs get win…teamed up with Britney Cloer at #3 doubles to finish with 8-8 record. 2009: Enjoyed a solid season as she registered a 13-8 singles record...played most of the year at #4 flight and went 10-7...went 2-0 at #6 and 1-1 at #4...played with three different doubles partner during the year and had overall worksheet of 11-10...played with Tania Mateva at #3 doubles and went 6-4...also played with Tess Darling and #3 at finished with 5-5 record. 2008: Produced a winning record in singles with 10-8 mark...went 8-8 at the #4 flight and perfect 2-0 at #6 flight...played with three different doubles partners and had 7-11 doubles mark...teamed up with Louise Bottomley at #2 doubles to go 4-3. Overview: Came to UNC Asheville in January of 2008 with her sister Nicole...native of San Diego...has enjoyed three good years for the Bulldogs…teamed up with Leslie Smith to have great doubles season in 2010. 2010: Played most of the year at #2 singles and compiled six victories with two wins at #3…won key three-set victory over Presbyterian College that helped Asheville earn win…sensational doubles season with Leslie Smith as registered a 17-5 record at #1 flight…went 4-3 in league matches…the duo won 10 straight matches midway through the year. 2009: Did an outstanding job as a sophomore with a 12-8 singles record...played most of the year at #2 flight and finished with a 10-7 mark, including three wins in BSC play...went 2-1 at #3 and 1-0 at #4...played #1 doubles with Leslie Smith and duo combined for a win-ning record at 11-9. 2008: Finished with an 11-7 record in singles and played most of the year at #3 flight...played her best tennis at the end of the year as she went 7-3 in her last 10 matches...played with three different doubles partners and went 7-9, including 4-3 mark with Leslie Smith. Leslie Smith

Senior / 5-6 Lavoisi HS / Paris, France Overview: Came into the UNC Asheville program in August of 2006 and enjoyed an excel-lent career on and off the court…has been the Bulldogs #1 player her entire career and has steadily improved with each season…native of Paris...superb student who has been on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll and Athletic Director's 3.0 & Above Club every year and semester during her career. 2010: Played every match at #1 singles and produced an 11-11 record with two wins in league matches…was named Big South Player of the Week in late March as she went 7-1 in singles and doubles to help spark Bulldogs to four straight wins…captured a thrilling three-set win over Erica White of Gardner-Webb in March to help Asheville win 5-2… sen-sational doubles season with Leslie Smith as registered a 17-5 record at #1 flight…went 4-3 in league matches…the duo won 10 straight matches midway through the year. 2009: Played #1 singles for the third straight year and registered eight wins during the sea-son...teamed up with doubles partner Stephanie Schon at #1 flight to go 11-9. 2008: Played #1 singles and battled hard before finishing with a 7-11 record...did a nice job in doubles as she played with both Louise Bottomley and Stephanie Schon...won four matches with each doubles partner. 2007: Was a bright spot for the Bulldogs as a rookie going 8-9 in singles play at the #1 flight...won six matches in doubles action, including 5-8 mark at #2 doubles.


Lise Gregory

Head Coach Third Season Former Florida State head tennis coach Lise Gregory is in her third year as head coach of the UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis program. In her two years as head coach of both programs, Gregory had steadily improved both programs and has each team ready to make an impact in the Big South Con-ference. In the 2009 season. she led the women's team to a 12-9 overall record. Gregory was named Big South Conference Coach of the Year for her work. This is Gregory's second tour of duty with the UNC Asheville program. She served as an assistant during the 2004-05 season and helped guide the women's team to an 11-8 overall record. It was just the second winning season for the Bulldog pro-gram in the last 18 years. Gregory lived in Asheville during the 2004-05 year before moving on to Vanderbilt where she served as Director of Facilities and Operations for one year. Gregory was the head coach at Florida State for eight years from 1996 until 2004. She enjoyed tremendous success both on and off the court at Florida State. Over her eight years at FSU, the Seminoles made seven trips to the NCAA Tour-nament and earned seven straight Golden Torch Awards - an honor bestowed on the Florida State team with the highest GPA. Gregory has the highest winning percentage in FSU women's tennis coaching history, with a career record of 119-83 for a .589 winning percentage. Gregory is the all-time winningest women's ten-nis coach at FSU and the only 100 match winner. FSU's best season under Gregory came in 1998-99 when it placed three players on the All-ACC team for the first time in school history. The Seminoles won 118 of 168 matches that season. She was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Women's Tennis Coach of the Year in 1999. Lise also earned another Coach of the Year honors in 2004. As a player at Miami, Gregory earned an amazing seven NCAA All-America hon-ors for her singles and doubles play as well as an NCAA doubles' championship in 1986 with teammate Ronni Reis. The duo compiled an impressive 84-10 record over four years, while Miami was consistently ranked among the nation's Top Five. Gregory was named to Tennis Magazine's All-Star team in both 1986 and 1987. As a professional, Gregory won nine tournament titles in 16 finals appearances, including seven Virginia Slims doubles championships on the way to a career-high No. 18 world doubles ranking in 1990. She also won the singles at the $25,000 Challenger in Philadelphia in 1987. Gregory was a doubles quarter-finalist at the Australian Open, a Grand Slam event, as well as one of the top eight teams in the world that participated in the year-ending Virginia Slims Champion-ship.


Tom Hand

Assistant Coach Second Season Former LSU standout Tom Hand is in his second year as an assistant coach with both the men's and women's tennis programs. “Tom has an excellent playing and coaching background and his credentials are superb,” stated head coach Lise Gregory. “We have very similar coaching phi-losophies. I am looking forward to working with him and helping the players reach their full potential” Hand brings significant playing and coaching experience to the UNC Asheville program. He served as head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis pro-gram at the University of New Orleans for the 2006 season. Hand was the Associ-ate Head Women’s Coach for Tulane during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. The Green Wave advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament both of his years at Tulane. He has been the personal coach to Melissa Mang, who was the number one ranked junior in the United States. Mang is now an All-American at Duke. Hand had a spectacular playing career at LSU. He was a four-year captain for the Tigers and helped lead LSU to two Southeastern Conference championships and two trips to the “Final Four.” Hand is ranked third on LSU’s all-time wins list with 107. He was ranked 13th in the country in singles and was a part of the number one doubles team in the nation as a senior. Hand was an outstanding student at LSU as he earned the University Medal for graduating with a 4.0 GPA in just three years. He was an Academic All-American and was the national winner of the Arthur Ashe Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service.

The Crowne Plaza Tennis Center

The Crowne Plaza Tennis Center, located just five minutes from campus, is the new home of Bulldog tennis. The Crowne Plaza has six indoor courts and six outdoor courts that give both Bulldog teams one of the best facilities in the Southeast. The project came together due to the partnership between UNC Asheville and Crowne Plaza. In addition, students and faculty at UNC Asheville can use the facility with a valid ID.

TO ASHEVILLE: From the East on I-40 Take exit 53B for I-240. Follow I-240 approximately 4.5 miles. Exit 5A onto Merrimon Ave. and turn right at the light at the bottom of the ramp. Proceed 1/3 mile to the traffic roundabout at the main entrance to UNC Asheville. From the North on I-26 Take the N.C. 251/UNC Asheville exit. Turn left at the traffic light at the bottom of the ramp and proceed 1/2 mile to traffic light. Turn left onto Weaver Boulevard. Proceed 1/3 mile to the traffic roundabout at the main entrance to UNC Asheville. From South or West on I-26 or I-40 Take I-240 towards Asheville as you cross the river, move into left lane. Take US I-26 North proceed one mile to UNC Asheville exit. Turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and proceed 1/3 mile to traffic light. Turn left onto Weaver Boulevard and proceed 1/3 mile to the traffic roundabout at the main entrance to UNC Asheville.

About 3,500 undergraduate students and about 330 full- and part-time faculty bring the campus alive with a genuine hunger to understand and contribute to the human experience. Mission UNC Asheville is distinctive in the UNC system as its designated liberal arts university. Dining Food is a big deal in Asheville. Restaurants offer everything from down home Southern fare to gourmet vegetar-ian dishes served in cozy pubs or sidewalk cafes, many with live music. The city is nationally known as a craft brewing community, for those over age 21, and Buncombe County is home to 10 commercial breweries. A host of farmers' markets (including one right on campus!) offer fresh, local produce and prepared foods. If this sounds like a gourmand's delight, you're right. Asheville has been dubbed "Foodtopia," where really great food and drink reign supreme!

Shopping One UNC Asheville alumnus created his own tongue-in-cheek city motto: "Come for the protests, stay for the shopping." While it’s true that some residents are politically active, everyone is swayed by the range of shop-ping opportunities. You’ll find traditional Appalachian pottery and other crafts in galleries and shops, handmade dog biscuits and haute couture – all in one city block! Around the corner, you’ll find bookstores that cater to those who seek hard-to-find reading selections. Another downtown shop features nationally acclaimed choco-late truffles.
