Following the greater than expected success of Susquehanna Region’s sole 2012 event, area RallyCross enthusiasts will be treated to an expanded three-event program this year. Henry Brillinger’s diligence has paid off with his acquisition of another site for our events, Trailway Raceway in Lilestown. Judging from the response to our November 18th event, competing on something other than a hard surface holds a particular fascination for some of our area competitors. The2012year-endbanquetwasheldJanuary12thattheGrantvilleHolidayInn.Inattendancefortheceremonieswere65membersandguests. SusquehannaRegionholdsnomembershipmeetinginDecemberduetotheproximityoftheholidays.Inlieuofthatmissingmeeting,anabbreviated“annualmeeting”isperformedatthebanquet.Thenormalorderofbusinessisreducedtotheintroductionandinstallationofincomingregionofficersandapresentationofourregion’supcomingactivities.Then,ofcourse,thereasonforthebanquet,dinnerandtheawards. SteveLimbert,afterfiveyearsasRegionalExecutive,
handedthegaveltoincomingREChrisPaveglio.JoiningChrisontheexecutiveboardfor2013areHenryBrillinger,assistantRE,AlanLesher,treasurer,DennisCipriany,secretary,anddirectorsGeoffCraig,3year,DaveWalter,2year,andAlanPozner,1year. ThefirstRallyCrossheldbyourRegioninsevenyearsreceivedastrongresponse.Whilewewereanticipatingpossibly25entriesfortheNovember18theventheldattheSusquehannaSpeedway,weactuallyreceived40pre-entriesplus10onsiteregistrations. JohnRoscinskiandAdamMoore,bothSusquehannaRegionmembersandlongtimecompetitorsandeventleaderswiththeDCRegion’sRallyCrossseries,providedthemanagementteamfortheoperationoftheevent.WewerealsoaidedbythepublicityprovidedbyboththeDCRegionandthePhillyRegion.TheDCRegionannouncedoureventattheirRallyCrossdriversmeetingsonanumberofoccasionsandboththeDCRegionandPhillyRegionpublicizedoureventintheirmailings. Ourregion’sautocrossmanagementteam,whoregularlyprovidesautocrosspreregistration,onsiteregistration,timing,communicationandtechinspectionservices,providedthoseservicesforourNovember

Sowhatwillwedofor2013?WeplantoexpandourRallyCrossprogramandrunitatadifferentlocation.WehavearrangedtorunthreeeventsatTrailwaySpeedway.ThespeedwayislocatedjustsouthofRoute116atapointfivemileswestofHanoverandtenmileeastofGettysburg.Whydidwechangelocation?WechangedbecausethelayoutofTrailwayismuchmorefavorabletoRallyCrosscoursedesignandoperations. WhileTrailwaySpeedwayisslightlysmallerthanSusquehannaSpeedway,(1/3ofamileratherthan4/10ofamile),thebankingisnotassteep,therearenofencesorguardrailsintheinfieldandtheentrancetothetrackandtheexitfromthetrackarelocatedonthebackstretch. IamexcitedandenergizedtobeyourR.E.forthisyear.OurautocrossserieshasreallybeenrunningwellandIamgladtobeadrivingpart(haha)ofthisregionandit’ssuccess.Formostofourmembers,successismeasuredbyhowwelltheautocrossrunsandhowmuchfunyouhaveateachone.Thefunaspecthasbeenour#1goal,withgoodcompetitionbeingavery,veryclosesecond. Engineheating,ormorepreciselyoverheating,isaconcernforeveryracecarbuilder,andwhendiscovereditmustbeaddressed.Oneofmywinterprojectsistoimprovetheenginecoolingonmy1982Porsche911trackcar.Asyoumaybeaware,olderPorscheswere“aircooled”.Actually,mostoftheseaircooledPorschesarecooledasmuchbyoilasbyair. Porschestartedwithsmalloilcoolersbolteddirectlytothemotor.Thesecoolersweresufficientforsmaller,streetmotors.Highercompressionracemotorsthatwerepushedneededadditionalcoolingcapacity,andfromtheearlydays,Porscheresortedtoafrontmountedcoolerunderthefrontbumper.Inthesecases,theairdamincludedalargeopeningandaaccommodationsweremadetoducttheflowofairtypicallyunderthecar.AstimeprogressedandPorschemotorsgrewinsizeandhorsepower,eventuallyitbecamestandardtoincludeanadditionalcooler. Inthecaseofmytrackcar,acoolerwasinstalledinthewheelwellofthepassengersidefrontwheel.Thiscoolerismorethanadequateforthestreetandactuallyworkstoanextentonthetrack. ThistrackcarisusedwithdifferentorganizationsincludingthePorscheclub.WhenrunningwiththePorscheclub,Iruninthe“red”group.TheredgroupisinstructoronlyandconsistsofsomeveryfastdriversandpracticallyeveryimaginablePorsche“super-car”modelincludingtwinturbos,GT2,GT3,andalloutracecars.Inordertoavoidtotalembarrassment,I’mforcedtoworkboththemotorandbrakesveryhard. Unfortunatelywhenthecarispushedonthe
trackandtheambienttemperatureistypicalofasummerday,thestockoilcoolerisnotcapableofkeepingthemotorwithincomfortablelimits.ThetemperaturekeepsclimbingduringthesesessionsuntilI’mforcedtocomeoffthetrack. Thesolution?Addanaftermarketfrontoilcooler.Ihadalreadyreplacedthefrontbumperwithafiberglassone-piecewithanopeningforthecooler.Thefirststepwastopreparethefrontfasciaofthecar.
Spacewasneededbehindthecoolertoallowfreeairflow,soaftercuttingoutaportionofthefacia,apieceofsteelsheetmetalwascurved,fitted,andweldedinplace.

Whileworkingonthisproject,IdecidedtotackleanotherproblemIbelievedtoalsobeheatrelated.Thecarhadexhibitedsomebrakerelatedissuesatrecenttrackoutings.First,therewasavibrationonlightbrakingthatappearedtobeoriginatingfromtherightfront. Secondly,sometimesthebrakepedalwouldbegintosoftenduetofade,butcouldbepumpedupwithonepump.Bothofthesesymptomsseemtopointtoabrakerotorissue,specificallymostwouldsayawarpedrotor.UpuntilrecentlyIwouldhaveagreedwiththatassessment,andinfactIprobablystatedthe
sametoacouplepeople.IstartedresearchingwarpedrotorssinceI,likeprobablyalmosteveryone,haveexperiencedthisissueanumberoftimes.WhatIlearnedwiththeresearchisthatitismostlikelynota“warped”rotor,butarotorwithahardspot. IfyousearchtheInternetforthetopic,youwilldiscoverthattherearejustasmanypeoplewhoclaimthatwarpedrotorsaretheproblemastherearewhoclaimthat“hardspots”aretheculprit.Iwouldhavebeenskepticalexceptforotheraspectsofmycircumstance. Thefolksonthenetwhodescribethe“hardspots”issueexplainthatitiscausedbytherotorbecomingoverheatedandthepadmaterialbeingdepositedontotherotor.Thentheheatedpadmaterialinteractswiththerotor’ssteeltoactuallychangethepropertiesofthesteel.Oncethesteelbecomeshardened,thehardspotdoesnotwearasmuchassurroundingareas,andtherotor’sthicknessactuallystartstovary.Sothepulsatingisdueto“fat”areasoftherotor.Therotor“high”spotstendtobumpthebrakepads,notonlywhenunderbraking,butunderstaticconditions. Whenthecalipercompresses,partoftherubberseal’sjobinadditiontokeepingthefluidinistokeepthepadclosetotherotorbykeepingthepistoninplace.Whentherotoris“warped”orhasfatspots,ittendstopushthepistonbackintothecaliper.Theendresultisitfeelslikeyou’reoutofbrakeuntilyoupumpitoncetobringthepadsbacktotherotor. Sowhatotheraspects?Well,Ihadrecentlyswitchedbrakepads.NormallyIrunPagidpads,specificallythePagidBluesportpads.

I’vealwayshadgoodluckwiththeblues.Theyseemlikeagreatallaroundpadthatiseasyontherotors.Duringoneofmybrakepadorderingfrenzies,Icouldnotfindbluesinstockwithatypicalsupplier,soIboughtPagidOranges.Theyarealittlemoreaggressivethantheblues.SubsequentlyIwasresearchingbrakepadsandstumbledacrossapostwhereseveralpeoplestatedthatPagidOrangepadswerepronetodeposition.Deposition?What?Depositionmeanstheytendtodepositmorebrakepadmaterialontherotors. Whatelse?Well,rememberInotedthatI’mveryaggressivewithbrakingonsomeoftheevents.Pluspreviouslytheoilcoolerwaslocatedinthewheelwellinfrontofthewheel.Notonlywastheairflowsomewhatrestricted,buttheaircomingoffthecoolerwouldhavebeenheatedbythehotoil.Here’sapictureofthefrontofthewheelwellwiththecoolerremoved.Inadditiontothecoolertherearehornsandotheritemsintheway.

AlanLesher’sAutoSeatCoverCompany,along-timeRegionsponsorandsupporter,replacedthecrackeddriver’ssidewindowandallfourfoggedfrontquarterwindows.Theyalsomadetheroofrepairs,performedanoilchange/filter/lube,andofcourseworkedtheirmagicreupholsteringtheseats. Theanticipatedreplacementofthebatteryisonholdasitseemstobefunctioningproperly.Furthertestingwillbeconducted. StanleySpringshandledthesuspensionrepairduties.Weassumedthetrucklistedtoonesidebecauseofadamagedrearspring,butacollapsedfrontspringwastheculprit.Springsfunctionbestwheninstalledinpairs,sobothfrontcoilswerereplaced. Asexpected,therearleafspringshadexperiencedsomesettlingovertime,butStanleydeterminedthatreplacementswerenotnecessary.Theybroughtthetruckbackintospecbyconstructingandinstalling

Club Truck Repairs Wrapping Up
The club truck improvements are near completion. Cracked and fogged glass has been replaced and new front coil springs have cured the truck’s list.
