California Playwrights Saturday Evening
Directed by Corky Dominguez
Josefina Lopez
Each year, CA Thespians choose one native Californian Playwright to honor. This years
honoree is Josefina Lopez. Josefina Lopez is best known for authoring the play and co-
authoring the film Real Women Have Curves, a coming-of-age story about Ana, a first-
generation Chicana torn between pursuing her college ambitions, a personal goal, and
securing employment, which is a family expectation. Even though she is best known for
the success of Real Women Have Curves, Josefina has had more than eighty productions
of her plays throughout the United States. In addition, Josefina also paints, writes
poetry, performs, and designs. She is the recipient of a number of awards and accolades.
Josefina has been a public speaker for over twenty year, and has lectured on various
topics including Chicano Theater, Womens History Issues, and Minority representation
in Cinema at over two hundred universities such as Yale, Dartmouth, and USC. She also
has a magazine column called Ask A Wise Latina. We are honored to present some of
the works of Josefina Lopez.
Corky Dominguez
Mr. Dominguez is a theatre director, theatre educator and overall theatre artist. He has an extensive list of theatre credits and has directed several productions at CASA 0101 Theater, including their 20-year anniversary production of Real Women Have Curves and the recent Brown and Out 2nd Annual Theater Festival. This past summer 2012 he attended an intensive theatre mask and movement program in Padua, Italy. He works as an acting coach, mask and movement facilitator, choreographer, and is a general theatre-teaching artist. Mr. Dominguez is an advocate for youth theatre programs and currently teaches at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), CASA 0101s Building a Healthy Boyle Heights Youth Theatre Program, and workshop theatre teacher for Camp Bravo Performing Arts Camp/Bravo Student Tours.

All State Show Sunday morning
Act I Stability
directed by Gary Griffiths and Jeremy Hansen, assistant Pat McLoy
We love non-traditional; original acts as well as published pieces. We welcome all styles of performance art. Be prepared to share what you've brought to the table or to learn something new. All artists must come with a collaborative spirit to affirm, motivate and inspire. What makes you strong? What makes you an individual? What grounds you?
Act II Breaking Away
directed by Michele Richardson, assistants Vanessa Montgomery and Katie Stout
Breaking away can signify a new beginning. Whether people break away from social norms, for political freedom, from a damaging relationship, to escape reality, or just to explore new avenues or themselves, the choice to abandon what you have always known can be liberating and even frightening. We want to grow as human beings and to do that we must sometimes change for the better of not only ourselves but also for the benefit of others.

BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS
CALIFORNIA THESPIANS FAVORITE CHARITY
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) is the official charity for the International Thespian Society.
In past years California State Thespians have collected money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS at the State Festival. This year we are asking you to come ready to battle- as the Tributes or the Capitol. Our goal this year is not only to raise as much money as possible, but also to raise awareness in a way that enables students of this generation to connect to the cause. This competition allows a little bit of healthy competition to ultimately come together as California Thespians to fundraise money and awareness for BC/ EFA.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is an important part of this years State Festival. Subsequently, the Friday and Saturday night dances are centered on the opposing forces dueling it out for bragging rights for BC/EFA. Friday nights dance theme Capitol themed-wear crazy clothing, hats, and wigs like the citizens of the Capitol. Saturday nights dance theme is District themed-wear something that represents your District (town, school, troupe). While we encourage creative outfits and costumes, we enforce a strict dress code, which includes no navel, cleavage, and excessive exposure of skin- legs, back, shoulders, etc. Students love these dances, so as to ensure the continuation of the dances crowd surfing, moshpits and fighting are strictly prohibited. We also ask for minimal public displays of affection and to keep the activities to dancing and talking. For ones comfort, we encourage comfortable shoes.

Work at the Festival represents what is best in California educational theatre, and it represents what is best about us as an organization.
Although the ultimate responsibility for any Troupes work lies with the Troupe Director, it is up to all of us to see that what we do on main-stage reflects our values, ideas, and beliefs as California State Thespians. This includes (but is not limited to) the following:
The State Board has set standards for content for main stage work and expects all Troupe Directors to adhere to those standards. What is acceptable in one community does not make it acceptable to the entire state. Let your work be creative, daring, and bold while following festival guidelines for appropriate performance material.
Securing rights is not only the law; it is what is right. It is the job of the Troupe director to be sure that his/her main stage work has the permission of the playwright or publisher to be performed.
Work at State can qualify students for competition at the International Festival and as such must follow all International Festival guidelines. (www.schooltheatre.org)
No explicit sexual language or profanity is allowed. (Language found in Shakespeares plays is acceptable.) Suggestive acting that denotes sexual activity of any kind except kissing and embracing is strictly forbidden. Performers should remain true to the authors intent in characterizations. Interpretations should not be offensive in regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, or culture. Please use good judgment in choosing performance material. If you question the appropriateness of any material, please contact the State Director.Let us all work together to see that what is best in California theatre also shows what is best in us as Thespians. 21

Get organized at Thespian Leadership and Tech ConferenceWonder why some troupes are so organized? Thespian Leadership Conferences lets troupe officers enhance leadership skills in goal-setting, stress management, troupe management, public relations, and fund-raising. Leadership is a great place to plan for the upcoming school year. Troupes get to meet fellow Thespians, share ideas and learn skills that will pay off in better-managed troupe meetings and in a clearer understanding of responsibilities. Troupes usually bring officers, but regular members can benefit, too. In order to run for California Thespian Student State Board, candidates must have attended a leadership training.
Summer Leadership is July 27th
Northern Fall Leadership is September 7th
Southern Fall Leadership is September 21st
