Transcript of 2013 February - CHAMBERVISION
February 2013
January was highlighted by two luncheons, one on the State of the County
with Chairman Dan Cronin and the other State of the Village with Mayor
Broda. Both were excellent presentations. We are very happy to have
Mayor Broda as an ex-officio member of our chamber board. He is a val-
uable resource and is very supportive of the chamber and business.
A special thanks goes out to our new member Minelab. We welcome them
to the chamber and enjoyed learning more about their sophisticated metal
detectors. Thanks to Kim Hughes and H&R Block for a fun Business After Hours. Be
sure to check out their tax preparation specials.
February marks a month of major activity for the Lisle Chamber. We have three different
luncheon opportunities with the first on Thursday February 7th sponsored by the Business
Ledger. We are marketing partners for this event which includes a discount on the fee for
Lisle Chamber members. The topic is money and banking which is always a significant
theme.
On February 8th we have the very popular Dinner Dance at the Lisle Hilton, Dancing with
the Chamber Stars. This event has been drawing more guests each year and is a very enjoy-
able interlude for the winter weather. Thanks in advance for our major sponsor Navistar
and all the terrific silent auction items donated by you the members. On February 21st the
Lisle Chamber and Benedictine University present “Lislepalooza”. This all day event fea-
tures a career fair, luncheon, and business after hours. There are still openings for the career
fair if you would like to promote opportunities at your company.
On February 26th we have the annual Economic Forecast luncheon with 10 other chambers
at the Marriott Chicago Southwest in Burr Ridge. William Strauss from the Federal Reserve
will be our speaker. He always gives us great insight into the economy for the year ahead.
Our Business After Hours will be hosted by Jason Fair at Merrill Lynch. We urge you to
visit that evening for some great networking. Please also join us for the ribbon-cutting at
the new Kumon of Lisle location on February 28th. Ground Hog Day is Saturday Feb. 2nd.
Don’t forget your valentine on Thursday February 14th.

The mission of the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce is to facilitate business
relationships and opportunities, to advocate on behalf of our members to
governmental bodies and the general public, to promote the best interests of
our membership in a fiscally sound and professional manner, and to promote
ethical business practices and contribute to the betterment of the community.
Now that we are truly into the New Year, it’s time to focus on our business relation-
ships and promote the best interests of our membership in a fiscally sound and profes-
sional manner. When you join or renew your Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce mem-
bership, you receive many direct benefits and added value opportunities. Your Cham-
ber is “Building a Foundation of Commitment”. The first benefit that comes to mind
when you become a Chamber member is an overnight stay and breakfast at one of our
local Lisle hotels. Another added attraction is that Chamber members and their direct
family may qualify for a 25% tuition discount at Benedictine University.
We have just witnessed the second inauguration of Barack Obama as the 45th President.
This inauguration comes at a time of economic distress. We wish to keep members in-
formed of issues currently before the legislature and assist you in making your opinion known to our repre-
sentatives. You may click on our Legislative Alert button on the Chamber website, open draft documents
and individualize them according to your specific business. State and Federal Representative contact infor-
mation is also provided. Now you may “Build a Foundation of Commitment”. We invite you to use these
draft letters to contact your representatives and express your opinion to potentially anti-business legislation.
Better yet, commit to becoming involved and join the Chamber Government Affairs Committee.
We are very happy to welcome Edward Hospital, Kumon of Lisle and Universal Technical Institute as new
members to the Lisle Chamber. They will be an added spark of energy to our ever growing membership.
Member attendance at the Mayor’s State of the Village address was outstanding, as were the Mayor’s synop-
sis of outstanding achievements in 2012 and his presentation of the economic outlook for 2013 in Lisle.
Several Board members attended the Martin Luther King breakfast at Benedictine University and heard an
awe-inspiring analysis of remembering the principles by which Dr. King lived, and still guide us today. The
featured presenter was Kernel Jill Morganthaler.
2013 will be an exciting year, and we kick off the excitement with the Chamber’s Annual Dinner Dance and
Silent Auction, “Dancing with the Chamber Stars”, February 8 at the Lisle/Naperville Hilton Hotel - - hope
you commit to being there with us at this gala event!

Mayor Broda, State of Village Address at Chamber Luncheon
By Nadine Filipiak
Mayor Joseph Broda was optimistic about Lisle prospects for 2013 in his annual State of the
Village address to about 100 Lisle Chamber of Commerce members and guests on January 17,
at the Hilton-Lisle/Naperville.
Broda’s address, titled “Rising to Meet the Challenge” focused on positive aspects beginning
with the fact that 39 new businesses opened in Lisle last year. “Business is the backbone of the
community,” he said, adding that fostering a good business climate is important because that is
what helps make a good community. Of the new businesses, 11 are in communication/ technol-
ogy, nine in the service industry and seven in healthcare.
The Mayor talked about the DuPage Medical Group's new 100,000-square-foot building on Warren-
ville Road and its affiliation with Rush University Medical Center and how it will attract about 350 people to
Lisle every day and provides hundreds of jobs. The Center also leases 55,000 square feet of office space on
Ogden Avenue where it employs an additional 260 employees. Broda, Tom Althoff, president and CEO of the
Lisle Chamber, and many Chamber members attended the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new medi-
cal building earlier in the month.
Mayor Broda also talked about Navistar, Inc., the international truck manufacturer, and the $188.5 million
invested in improving the former unoccupied Lucent site on Warrenville Road. “Navistar is a tremendous
asset to the village of Lisle,” he said. “And I’m glad they’re here. They employ more than 3,000 people every
day.”
There are new residential facilities in Lisle, including the Arboretum Landmark, a four-story, 310-unit
apartment complex on 8.1 acres facing Warrenville Road. The Mayor said the company expects begin leasing
operations in the fourth quarter of 2013.
“We can probably no longer rely on what state legislators are going to do,” the Mayor said. “We’re just
going to have to bear with it and meet the challenge.” He added that his fiscal management policy is simple, "If
we don't have it, we do not spend it."
Broda initiatives for this year include running village govern-
ment more efficiently with police department streamlining and the
use of volunteers, and expanding communications through the vil-
lage website and the use of social media, and increasing sustainabil-
ity through a number of programs.
Mayor Broda concluded his State of the Village address by
awarding his Community Spirit Award to the Lisle Teens with Char-
acter organization, a nonprofit program sponsored by the village and
Lisle Park District. "We are so very proud of these kids and what
they do," Broda said. "These are our future leaders."
Tom Althoff, president/CEO of the Lisle Area Chamber of
Commerce, said “The mayor always gives a comprehensive review
of the activities of the village of Lisle. It adds to the sense of pride we have for our community and the high
regard others have for Lisle and his leadership. He is a huge asset to the business community and a great advo-
cate for business.
The Morton Arboretum has achieved accreditation as a
museum from the American Alliance of Museums.
Accreditation is the highest form of national recognition
for a museum, signifying excellence in all aspects of
operations and programs that serve the public, and attesting
to professional standards of leadership and accountability. As an outdoor museum of
trees, the Arboretum maintains living collections, provides educational offerings,
and conducts research initiatives -- all in support of its mission to save and plant
trees for a greener, healthier, and more beautiful world.

Ambassador SPOTLIGHT— Wally Nagel
One of our newer members of the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce, Wally has
been serving as an Ambassador for less than a year. He is still getting to know the
members and the different committees and plans on becoming more involved with
the Chamber. Being an Ambassador allows Wally to meet new people and help
them get involved in the Chamber. He is hopeful to meet and bring new clients to
Class Printing so that they too can, “Do It With CLASS.”
Wally is the owner of Class Printing. His duties include anything and everything that needs to be
done with the exception of some of the prepress duties. He has been involved in the printing industry
for over 35 years. Wally began as a press operator back in the 1970’s, and has been learning more
and more about the business since then.
Wally lives in the Green Trains subdivision in Lisle with his wife Roxanne and daughter Ja mey. They also have 3
other children who are now out on their own. Wally and Roxanne are involved in the Green Trails Improvement As-
sociation sign committee and Roxanne is also a board member of GTIA. Wally’s hobbies include riding Harleys with
his wife and fishing on Lake Michigan for Salmon. Roxanne and Wally also enjoy cooking and entertaining. Wally
leaves us with this bit of wisdom, “Remember, it is not the destination, but the Journey that is important. Just make
sure you make it an Adventure to remember.”
