OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Sunday, November 3, 2013

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Kendalia, TX

Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation (WRR) was founded in 1977 by Lynn Cuny in her San Antonio backyard and became incorporated in 1978 as a non-profit. Today, WRR cares for over 6,000 native birds, mammals, and reptiles annually and returns most of them to the wild. The animals who come to us have been orphaned, injured, or displaced by urban encroachment. Those who are unable to be safely released are provided

permanent sanctuary on more than 200 acres in Kendalia, Texas. Some of these have been victims of the exotic "pet" trade, rescued from roadside zoos, or used in research labs and therefore cannot be returned to their natural habitats. All permanent residents are provided with spacious enclosures where they can live out their days peacefully and privately...away from human interference. WRR maintains a 24-hour Emergency Hotline and is available 24/7/365 to provide advice and assistance in dealing with human-wildlife encounters in a non-lethal manner.

3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Austin Pets Alive! Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) operates the largest nonprofit animal shelter in the region. In 2008, the organization built its programs around saving the “bottom 50%”, defined as the 50% of shelter animals that were euthanized/killed in the Austin Animal Center (AAC) from 2002-2008. As a result, APA’s programs specialize in filling the community life-

saving gaps at a large enough scale to make a measurable impact on the city’s euthanasia/kill rate, which is now at less than 10%. The Austin community is heavily involved in supporting these programs through volunteering at every level as well as offering foster homes to approximately 60% of the animals in APA’s care. APA! currently operates out of the old city shelter facility, Town Lake Animal Center, which houses about 300-400 animals at any given time. The current three fold strategy of APA! is to help the city maintain a 90% save rate, increase the save rates of all of central Texas open-admission shelters, and help other cities implement no-kill programs.

TOOLS FOR CHANGE

Monday, November 4, 2013

7:45 – 8:45 a.m. Continental Breakfast 8:45 – 10:15 a.m. Fighting Animal Cruelty, State by State, Law by Law People hear the word Texas and often think of cowboy boots, oil rigs and steak houses. But Texas is quickly becoming a hotbed for animal law. In this session you’ll learn from one of the attorneys leading the way about how Texans united to ban horse slaughter and strengthen laws on dogfighting and cockfighting. Of course, no state is perfect. So what happens when states take a Texas two-step backwards on animal cruelty and pass “ag gag” laws that criminalize people who report animal abuse on factory farms? Come learn the history of how these corporate-backed laws curb free speech and prevent the prosecution of criminal animal abuse and what is being done to stop them.

Moderator: Tom Linney, Pro Bono Coordinator, Animal Legal Defense Fund Carter Dillard, Director of Litigation Program, Animal Legal Defense Fund Yolanda Eisenstein, Attorney, Eisenstein Law Office; Director, Texas Humane Legislation Network 10:15 - 10:45 a.m. Break 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. When Worlds Collide: How Does Collaboration among Animal Welfare Providers AND Funders Work? Funders frequently collaborate in other program areas, such as child welfare, housing and workforce development. In companion animal welfare, local agencies are increasingly coordinating their efforts around a strategic plan. What happens when a funder steps in to serve as the backbone in that process and recruits other funders to the table? Two community foundations and one national funder will share transferable lessons learned through projects in Dallas, San Antonio and Phoenix.

Moderator/Presenter: Monica Neal, Program Officer, Animal Welfare, Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Gavin Nichols, Program Officer - Community Initiatives, San Antonio Area Foundation Laura J. Ward, Director of Community Philanthropy, The Dallas Foundation

In this introductory level session, you will explore the possibilities of impact investing: recoverable grants, grant/loan combinations, loans and guarantees, and equity investments. These tools can supplement our current grant efforts and help us do more to support the love and concern we have for animals. Through case examples and a review of resources provided by Mission Investors Exchange, you will see a broader array of impact tools and leave equipped to assess whether these are right for your foundation.

Moderator: Leigh Bantivoglio, Founder, UnCaged Network Jean L. Tom, Counsel, Tax-Exempt Organizations Group, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP Christa Velasquez, Senior Advisor, The Giving Practice 2:45 - 3:15 p.m. Break 3:15 - 4:45 p.m. Digital Marketing 101 Digital marketing tools have tremendous power to help raise awareness of charitable causes and connect organizations and individuals to drive change. But, terms like "search engine optimization" and "social media campaign" can strike fear in the heart of a leanly resourced non-profit. This session will provide an overview of the world of digital marketing and why it is important for both animal grantmakers and their grantee organizations. Learn which affordable digital marketing activities can drive the most impact and where to go for resources and support.

Wise, President, Nonhuman Rights Project Introduction by Brad Goldberg, President and Director, Animal Welfare Trust Animal Rights 2.0 – Taking the Struggle for Nonhuman Animals to the Next Level

The name Steven M. Wise is practically synonymous with animal law. For over 30 years, attorney Wise has been at the forefront of the field: leading the fledgling Animal Legal Defense Fund as president; teaching numerous animal rights law courses at Harvard and other law schools; drawing mainstream attention to the possibility of legal rights for at least some animals with seminal works such as Rattling the Cage: Toward Legal Rights for Animals; and working toward gaining legal rights for animals in the courts through the Nonhuman Rights Project, which is poised to file the

first lawsuit to demand legal rights for nonhuman animals in 2013, its every step documented by Academy Award Winner, D.A. Pennebaker and his wife and partner Chris Hegedus. Steve will take us through the milestones and challenges of his impressive career and show us how he envisions animal law changing our relationship with animals in the imminent future.

TOOLS FOR CHANGE

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Sanctuaries: A Vision for the Future The future of sanctuaries and the lives of so many animals depend on how we feel about the various establishments. Many of us fund animal rescues and rehabilitation, but should our responsibility end there? Why are we so cautious when it comes to supporting sanctuaries when they are a necessary vehicle to create a better world for the animals they care for? By educating ourselves about why sanctuaries fail and understanding how to bring business sense to the concept and create a sustainable model, we may be able to overcome these obstacles and move forward to accomplish more with our dollars. Moderator: Patty Finch, Executive Director, Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries Hal Morris, Assistant Attorney General & Managing Attorney, Bankruptcy Regulatory Section, Office of The Texas Attorney General Howard Baskin, Secretary, Treasurer, Advisory Board Chairman and Board Member, Big Cat Rescue Dr. Kevin Dennison, Western Region Emergency Program Manager, USDA Cathy Willis Spraetz, President & CEO, Chimp Haven, Inc. 3:30 p.m. End of Conference 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Walking Tour of Austin Explore the fabulous sights of Austin with fellow AG members! 6:00 p.m. Optional Dinner The Clay Pit (www.claypit.com) * 1601 Guadalupe Street, Austin, TX 78701
