Dear Friends,

This year will mark my 25th year in joining Ron as Artistic Director to provide creative leadership for the Sacramento Ballet. Together, we have crafted an amazing array of seminal works for the 2013-2014 season, many of which are among our personal favorites. Showcasing the depth of talent from our roster of international artists, the season is a bold celebration of our past and a tribute to our future. We can’t wait to share these wonderful works of art with you.

In October, we proudly present three works inspired by the genius of the Russian spirit to ignite your imagination. The mythic Firebird, the notorious Rite of Spring, and Balanchine’s sensual Rubies combine into a brilliant collection of iconic dance works. In November, we bring you the world’s most beloved fairy tale, Cinderella, and our annual production of The Nutcracker continues to be the crown jewel of Sacramento’s holiday season.

Celebrate love in the air with our February production of three fantastic works extolling the many expressions of love. Wild Sweet Love, Wunderland, and a World Premiere will make you fall in love all over again. March will herald the return of The Great Gatsby, complete with live music by Billy Novick’s Blue Syncopators. Also on the March program is Balanchine’s sparkling Allegro Brilliante.

Modern Masters in May will showcase Apollo, Balanchine’s 1928 masterpiece along with three California women choreographers creating brand new works. Our nationally recognized Beer & Ballet program continues our exploration of creativity by developing our next generation of choreographers. And there is much, much more. The Firebird - with Rite of Spring and George Balanchine's Rubies Community Center Theater • October 24, 25, 26 – 7:30pm; October 27 – 2:00pmThree great masterworks share a program inspired by the creative brilliance of Russian tradition. The mythic tale of the mysterious Firebird springs to life as she comes to the aid of Prince Ivan in his quest to free a captive princess and establish a Royal Empire. Celebrating the Rite of Spring’s explosive 100th anniversary, Ron Cunningham’s retelling of this primitive ritual is a riveting, theatrical experience not to be missed. A red hot jazz inspired score provides the perfect backdrop for Balanchine’s witty and sophisticated Rubies.

Wild Sweet Love - with Wunderland by Edwaard Liang and a World Premiere by Ma CongCommunity Center Theater • February 13, 14, 15 – 7:30pm; February 16 – 2:00pmFrom the Partidge Family to Mendelssohn's famous Wedding March, from Puppy Love to deeply felt emotion, Trey McIntyre's Wild Sweet Love shows us that love wears many faces. Beautiful and intensely moving, Edwaard Liang's Wunderland was the run-away hit of the 2011 Modern Masters season. Ma Cong, one of the most sought after choreographers in the nation, takes aim with Cupid's Bow to create a fresh new look at love with a World Premiere.

Olympus, he was instructed in the classical arts by his three Muses. Mr. Balanchine’s 1928 Apollo was instantly hailed as a great masterpiece that defined a new direction in dance. In tribute to this iconic work of art, this year’s Modern Masters will feature three California women (Muses) to create new works alongside the legendary Apollo.
