What is the meaning of life?

Holocaust survivor and psychologist, Viktor Frankl

came up with a formula through his experience,

perhaps giving us a clue to answering this question:

Hopeless = Suffering - Meaning

Does this suggest that the Meaning is Suffering plus Hope?

As we take an eternal musical journey, we might better understand the meaning of life through illusive and elusive episodes,

insaisissable épisodes.

Ronnie MilsapInspiration is synonymous with American country music singer and pianist Ronnie Milsap. Born with a disorder that left him nearly blind and then a condition that completely robbed him of his eyesight, Milsap did not let that stop him from driving to the top of the charts. Enjoy romantic favorites on Valentine’s Day with Symphony Orchestra Augusta, including chart topping hits such as, “(I’m A) Stand By My Woman Man,” “What a Difference You’ve Made in My Life,” and “It Was Almost Like a Song.”

Thursday | March 7, 2013Classical Mystery Tour: A Tribute to The BeatlesDo you have Beatlemania? Then you don’t want to miss this concert! Experience the memorable tunes performed exactly as they were written with the performing group Classical Mystery Tour and Symphony Orchestra Augusta. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with acoustic guitar and string quartet, and enjoy the rock/classical blend of the hard-edged “I Am the Walrus.”

Saturday | January 12, 2013The Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse, formed in 1997 as a student quartet at the University of Southern Mississippi, has evolved into a nationally recognized chamber group. The Hornsmen take pride in their ability to connect with the audience and break the traditional barrier between the musicians and the listener. In addition to the traditional staples of the horn repertoire, The Four Hornsmen play classical transcriptions of composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Strauss, as well as light hearted numbers and humorous pieces of PDQ Bach, Herman Jeurissen, and Lowell Shaw.

tuesday | February 19, 2013Accomplished performers individually, the trio has earned widespread critical acclaim for its compelling interpretations of the chamber music repertoire. The Washington Post calls them “colorful and infectiously enjoyable.” Known for her lyrical eloquence on the stage, Navah Perlman has established herself as one of the most poetic and admired pianists of her generation. She has performed to critical acclaim in major concert venues throughout the world. Violinist Philippe Quint combines brilliant virtuosity and old-world elegance in dazzling performances, and Zuill Bailey is widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world.

Saturday | March 9, 2013Praised for their “panache” by The New York Times, The Harlem Quartet is currently the resident ensemble in the New England Conservatory of Music’s Professional String Quartet Program. The quartet’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, which highlights works by minority composers.

Join SOA for the inauguration of our composer festival! This season features a week full of the grand chamber and orchestral works of Ludwig van Beethoven. The Perlman, Quint, Bailey Trio opens the festival in the Bank of America Columbia County Music Series. The Georgia Health Sciences Symphony Series concert features the orchestra in Beethoven’s Overture to Prometheus and Symphony No. 7, as well as the trio in the Triple Concerto. SOA ends the festival with a Family Concert on Sunday, February 24, with actor Tim Marrone appearing as Beethoven himself to take us on a journey through the composer’s sound perspectives. SOA partners with other arts organizations to provide community events throughout the week, including lectures, master classes, visual art projects, a day of Beethoven at the KROC Center, and much more.

Although Beethoven is certainly a hero of SOA, the deeper intention behind the Beethoven Festival is to celebrate music and the greatest cultural achievements of humanity. The festival is SOA’s effort to link Beethoven’s world and music to our contemporary exploration of the essential concerns of everyday life, such as new music, art, and politics.

Please join SOA by participating with orchestras throughout the nation in our effort to fight hunger. In collaboration with Golden Harvest Food Bank, SOA asks everyone to bring food donations to each Pops! at the Bell concert. All food is distributed by Golden Harvest Food Bank throughout the CSRA to those in need. Collection bins will be located in the front lobby at the Bell Auditorium at each concert. Last season, SOA collected over 900 pounds of food to create over 765 meals for those in need. SOA’s goal, with your help, is to surpass that target this season.

The national Orchestras Feeding America project, initiated in 2009 by the League of American Orchestras, was inspired by the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a gifted Juilliard-trained cellist who became homeless as a result of his mental illness. Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez, who noticed Mr Ayers, was drawn to his talent, intelligence, and passion for Beethoven. This relationship led to the creation of the film, The Soloist, about Mr. Ayers. This film and the Orchestras Feeding America project are testaments to the power of music.
