What are our foreign policy options in 1890?

We choose Imperialism (1890-1913)
DEFINITION: One country’s control of another country.
When It Begins: 1898 with the Spanish-American War. We help Cubans get their independence from Spain.
Why Get Involved? Remember the Maine!• Yellow
Journalists create support for the war through exaggerated and emotional headlines to fire people up.
America Emerges as a World Power
• The Spanish American War lasts only four months and creates superpower status for the U.S.
• We use this power worldwide, for example, by demanding free trade for all nations in China through the Open Door Policy.
• However, most of our power and influence is used in LATIN AMERICA.
Other Ways We Expand Our Influence in Latin America
• Teddy Roosevelt: Roosevelt Corollary (aka the “Big Stick” policy) said we were now the “police” in Latin America.
• Taft: Dollar Diplomacy. Loan $$$ to Latin America to gain influence there.
• Wilson: Moral Diplomacy. We only support nations that think and believe they same things we do.
Example of Roosevelt Corollary• We help Panamanians
get independence from Colombia. In exchange, they let us build and own a canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans..the Panama Canal.
The Result?
• We exhibit a TON if political and economic influence in Latin America and Asia.
Entry into WWI• WWI officially began with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in 1914.
• Attempts to remain neutral ended in 1917 when war was declared after Germany refused to stop unrestricted submarine warfare on ships headed to Great Britain.

Treaty of Versailles
1. Germany would take the blame for all the Allied losses and pay reparations2. Germany would lose 10% of its European territory, as well as its colonies abroad3. The standing military of Germany was reduced to only 100,000

The Roaring Twenties
• After WWI, the U.S. superpower status was even greater, but people wanted to forget war and have fun. This was an era of fads (a behavior that catches on for a short time) and flappers.

The Roaring Twenties Ends with a Whimper
Prohibition was a period of nearly fourteen years of U.S. history in which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of liquor was made illegal. It led to the first and only time an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was repealed. (18th repealed by the 21st).
Stock Market Crash• Intense speculation
drove stock prices sky high. Bank runs led to panic and a crash in October, 1929. This last events of the Roaring Twenties will usher in the Great Depression.
