From the Dean’s desk:

Pharmacy is both an ancient and honorable profession. Pharmacological knowledge was first recorded in Egypt some 36 centuries ago, and the earliest known compilation of medicinal substances occurred in India in the 6th century BC. In Europe, pharmacy-like shops began to appear during the 12th century, and in 1240 the Holy Roman Emperor Frederic II issued a decree that, for the first time, separated the physician's and the apothecary's professions.

2014 marks the centennial of pharmacy education in Alberta. At a mere one century, pharmacy in Alberta is relatively young. But longevity alone isn’t what’s important. Progress is what counts, and pharmacy education has come a long way since 1914. Back then, students had to be at least 14 years old and the program of study was two years long. And in case you were wondering, tuition was $50 per year!

Alberta has long been a leader in pharmacy research and education. This has been evident throughout our history by the innovative leaders amongst our Faculty, and our truly outstanding alumni and students.

Although the past year held many challenges for the University and our Faculty, I am proud to say that our students, staff and faculty members were up to these challenges and were able to seize new opportunities including working with our first class of post-professional PharmD students, expanding our international engagement to China while maintaining important partnerships with Italy and Japan, and other areas described throughout this report. We will continue to assure that our graduates are prepared to participate in all aspects of our health care system. We will also provide leadership in Alberta and nationally to assure pharmacists continue to be key team members in providing the best care for our patients. I invite you to participate or stay abreast of our ongoing activities by visiting our website at pharm.ualberta.ca.

Our Academic Plan Progress and curriculum development: year two

Academic Plan The Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs offered positive remarks on the progress made towards the 27 goals outlined in our 2012 strategic plan. The Council’s board members noted that “substantial progress” has been made towards reaching the goals outlined in the Faculty’s Academic Plan. The Council’s Executive Director also praised the leadership team's effort to move forward with “important initiatives” with our strategic plan, comprehensive assessment plan and program renewal. To succeed with pharmacy’s inevitable change, our academic plan identifies five key strategic priorities. The team has continued to make excellent progress over the past year. The table below reflects the progress made towards completing each goal’s “action items” in the first two years of the five-year plan.

Curriculum Development: Doctor of Pharmacy Program 2014-2015 is the first year we will see practicing pharmacists in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. They will join some of our recent graduates to bring the class number up to 17 from 10. Graduation for the inaugural PharmD Class will take place in November 2014. The Faculty is undertaking a number of initiatives to allow more flexibility for students in the post-professional PharmD program. A “Recognition of Prior Learning” process, and the development of a part-time distance delivery, are options the Faculty hopes to offer within the next year. Stuart Drozd, PharmD Program Administrator, has recently joined the Faculty to oversee the development and implementation of these endeavors. A new curriculum will soon replace the BSc in pharmacy program and will provide graduates with the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) credential. The Faculty’s Curriculum Development Steering Committee began working on the new entry-level PharmD framework in 2013. The new academic path will include two years of pre-pharmacy courses with a new four-year pharmacy program. The start date for the new pharmacy program is set for Fall 2017.

Alumni/Student Mentorship Our 2013-2014 mentorship program brought together 43 third-year student pharmacists and 21 pharmacists who volunteered to mentor. This program gives students and mentors the opportunity to connect. Our mentorship program helps address student pharmacists concerns with the transition from academic to professional work. Pharmacy alumni provide advice and guidance to students drawing on their wealth of professional and personal experiences. This year, Primary Care Network pharmacists from across Alberta gathered on campus to discuss the roles and career options of working at Primary Care Network sites. The formal program has sessions from September to April each year. The Pharmacy Alumni Association spearheaded the creation of our successful alumni/student mentorship program in 2007.

To succeed with pharmacy’s inevitable change, part of the Faculty’s mission is to prepare our students for life-long learning. Our student pharmacists receive the tools to be leaders in pharmaceutical care, to manage drug therapy, and to counsel patients on the proper use of medications. The faculty’s Curriculum Development Steering Committee aims to assure optimal educational outcomes. The committee has started making curriculum changes to replace the BSc in Pharmacy degree with the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. Students registered for the Fall 2017 will be the first group to enter the new program. Our pharmacy program offers students the opportunity to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills. This begins with exposure to practice and care environments, in a service learning course, in the program’s first year. These skills are further developed throughout the curriculum in the classroom and in clinical skills laboratories, as well as experiential sites in hospitals and the community. Our experiential education involves students in patient care settings for 22 weeks. This education provides further refinement of clinical skills prior to graduation. Student pharmacists learn from the following groups:

- basic scientists - pharmacy practitioners - health care providers other than pharmacists - patients

Submitted by William Snodgrass, President Alberta Pharmacy Students' Association The Alberta Pharmacy Students’ Association (APSA) had a great year in 2013/2014. We were able to raise $25,000 for the Run for the Cure and $16,000 for Movember Canada with our annual Mr. Pharmacy pageant. Our APSA council met over the summer and have plans to raise even more money for these charities in the upcoming scholastic year. We have increased our advocacy efforts this past year by establishing a committee called Students Advocating for the Future of Pharmacy (SAF-Pharm). The committee will be organizing some great lunch and learns for the upcoming year, as well as working toward a provincial government lobby day. Pharmacy Awareness Month was a great success. We had tremendous speakers including the American Pharmacists Association’s (APhA) CEO Tom Menighan. We also held blood pressure and diabetes screening clinics for the community. Our team and fellow students did a wonderful job promoting health and raising awareness about clinical pharmacy practice. Our committee will continue to prepare this summer, so that we can serve our fellow pharmacy students to the best of our abilities! We are all really excited about our newly developed student space and can’t wait to get back to work.

Our Faculty invites graduate applicants from both Canadian and international universities. A pharmacy degree is beneficial in some cases, but is not a prerequisite for entry into our graduate program. The Faculty’s two divisions cover 13 research areas. Our researchers recruit 10 to 15 students each year. The undergraduate background of the student combined with the Faculty’s varied research areas create a unique set of courses for each student.

Submitted by Hashem Etayash, President Pharmacy Graduate Students’ Association The Pharmacy Graduate Students’ Association has positively engaged with the faculty and made significant changes to enhance the students’ knowledge and experience in 2013. One of the Association’s many successes was the ability to recruit international high profile scientists such as Dr. Rav Kumar, vice president of research and development, GlaxoSmithKline, for the Fulbright lecture about recent science innovations, marketing experience and future career opportunities. In addition to well-known speakers, we also hosted also a luncheon meeting for graduate students with Elaine Campbell, President, and Neil Maresky, Vice President, Scientific Affairs of AstraZeneca. This year the Association’s leadership team created a new Students’ Choice Award and presented it to a fellow graduate student at the Faculty’s 2013 research day. The students voted on each of their peer’s presentations. Mr. Hassan Althurwi was the recipient of the first Students’ Choice Award for his presentation titled: Role of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes in the Initiation and Development of Cardiac Hypertrophy. The leadership team also created and hosted several new events aimed to improve the graduate student experience at the Faculty: new students’ orientation, annual faculty social event, and an end of the year celebration The Association was able to set clear goals for the next year with the help of two council members who brought forward suggestions on ways to improve the graduate program.

Submitted by Dr. Nese Yuksel Associate Professor & Chair, Pharmacy Practice It has been my pleasure to have served as the Chair for Pharmacy Practice Division for the past year. The division has continued to grow advanced practice and research. Many of our faculty members were recipients of awards recognizing these achievements. Go to our 2013 Awards of Recognition page, in this report, to see the recognition our faculty members received. Division members also actively serve on numerous committees, editorial boards, grant review panels and professional organizations, locally, provincially and nationally.

This past year, the inaugural 14-month post-professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program enrolled its first class with plans for convocation in November, 2014. The next class started in September 2014. The program has expanded to not only accept fourth-year students tracking in from the University of Alberta BSc in Pharmacy program, but also practicing pharmacists. Under the leadership of Dr. Réne Breault, the new Director of the Post-Professional PharmD program, an online/distance option will soon be available. Check our website regularly to keep up-to-date. In addition, we are excited to report the graduate program in the Practice Division has been steadily increasing. We have a number of students in both the MSc and PhD programs specializing in Pharmacy Practice; this list also includes University of Alberta alumni from our BSc program.

Over the past year there have been a number of changes in our division. The division would like to welcome the following new Pharmacy Practice members: Teri Charrois (Clinical Associate Professor and lead for practice skills), Tara Leslie (who has taken a temporary position as the PharmD experiential coordinator) and Stuart Drozd (Program Administrator for the PharmD program). In addition, Dr. Scot Simpson is now the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs and Dr. Christine Hughes has taken on the position of Acting Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) while Teri Schindel is on a six month educational leave. We would also like to congratulate the following promotions including Dr. Scot Simpson to Full Professor and Dr. Mark Makowsky who was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor. The division would also like to acknowledge the following faculty members who have gone on to pursue other opportunities in the past year including Cathy McCann and Joe Tabler.

Submitted by Dr. John Seubert Associate Professor & Chair, Pharmaceutical Sciences

As the new Pharmaceutical Sciences Division Chair, I would like to thank Dr. Raimar Löbenberg for his leadership and service over his term. During the past year, there have been significant changes, milestones and successes. Dr. Franco Pasutto has officially retired; we would like to express our thanks for his service and outstanding contributions. We wish both Dr. Ayman El-Kadi and Dr. Ole Klotz well in their new positions. Dr. El-Kadi took a leave to be the Dean for the College of Pharmacy at Qatar University and Dr. Klotz returned to Germany to become the Department Chair in Nutrigenomics at Jena University. We also look forward to Dr. Doschak returning from his sabbatical later this summer.

We welcome Dr. Khaled Barakat who joined our Faculty as a research assistant professor in January. His research group focuses on understanding structure-function relationships of biological substances in health and disease by interfacing physics, biology and computer science. As well, Dr. John Ussher will be joining our Faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor in November. His research investigates how obesity causes skeletal muscle insulin resistance in the hopes of identifying novel therapeutic targets for diabetes.

Some of our notable successes include the tenure and promotions of Drs. Jurasz, Velazquez and Siraki to Associate Professor and new grants obtained by Drs. Siraki, Lavasanifar, Seubert and Kaur. Dr. Löbenberg is the president-elect for the Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Velazquez was elected to the board of directors and Dr. Brocks was named a Fellow. We had a successful Toxicology Research Group Symposium in the Fall with our guest speaker Dr. Michael Waalkes from National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the US National Toxicology program. We are close to finalizing a ‘Dual Degree’ program with the University de Sao Paulo’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The rapidly changing funding environment has highlighted a critical period in research. Our Division continues to work on developing new ideas and collaborations, such as a pilot project program to allow faculty members the ability to build research teams and obtain data making them competitive in the new funding environment. Overall, we will continue to work to strengthen our Division and the Faculty to help address the new challenges we now face.

Dr. Yang Yang, Post-Doctorate Fellow
