2011 was a monumental year for Genuine Solutions UK (GSUK) and one where we surpassed our goals both in terms of business growth and environmental excellence. Along the way we were the proud recipients of some truly prestigious accolades such as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise. This really was an unexpected honour for a company still very much in its youth and with so many dreams and aspirations yet to fulfil. It is a shining example of the determination and unyielding spirit to succeed that exists throughout the whole Genuine Solutions Group and continues to inspire us all daily.

The bar has now been set and 2012 brings with it a whole new set of objectives and targets for GSUK to aim for, and this is exactly as it should be. We will never rest on our laurels or let our vision become clouded by our previous successes. We will continue to improve and strive to reach new heights in environmental excellence, customer service and commercial success.

Working together with our suppliers and customers we can achieve this.

Ewan Fraser Managing Director

OVERVIEW 2011

Page 5: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

COMPANY FACTS• Since inception, GSUK has recovered more

than 8 million mobile phone accessories.

• That amounts to almost 200 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill every year.

• GSUK recycles more than 1,500 miles of waste cable from chargers and handsets each year - enough to tightrope walk from London to Moscow.

• Holds 14 environmental accreditations, licenses and exemptions, one of the most highly accredited recovery operations in the industry.

• Offers environmentally focussed, end-of-life recovery solutions for 30 blue-chip partners, including every UK mobile network.

• In 2011 GSUK received a Green Apple Award at the Houses of Parliament and Green Hero status was awarded in 2012.

GSUK has been formed to focus on providing social and environmental solutions to the mobile industry and beyond. As an industry it is pivotal that we do all we can to prevent the harmful effects of our business activities from damaging the environment. With the current Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive and global warming issues, there has never been a better time for businesses in this arena to make social responsibility a key part of their business activity.

To this end, GSUK provides help in the main areas of business activities that are associated with the processes surrounding stock disposal and waste reduction:

• Non RTV Stock Lines.

• 14 Day Returns.

• Excess Stock Management.

• End-of-life / Disposals.

• Damaged Stock.

• Recycling.

• Waste Disposal.

Our specially designed operations not only deal with these areas in an environmentally friendly manner, but offer the highest possible revenue returns for re-processed stock lines, making it not just an ethical decision, but a practical and economic one as well.

ABOUT GSUK

Page 6: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

Bulk and blistered product lines are separated, and damaged products that can’t be processed are removed for recycling or safe storage. Blistered product is re-processed to form working bulk stock and in many cases we can re-use the excess packaging as well. Re-processed stock is then ready for inventory, creating saleable items with revenue returns.

RECOVERY ANd RECYCliNgThe waste separated in the second stage of the process now goes through our recycling operation - the final process we action. It has become a somewhat everyday activity but also one that becomes increasingly difficult and costly if not done in an ordered and educated way. GSUK operates at a recycling efficiency of over 94%. Products and materials that are not viable for recycling under current day legislation are stored for either future recycling as technology inevitably improves, or for safe disposal where necessary.

PROdUCT SORTiNg This is one of the most neglected areas for many companies, and should be the focal point of any business whose activity includes stock inventory. It is reliant on expert product knowledge that is constantly updated, the ability to understand product and packaging, the ability to assess product lines and understanding your routes to market.

GSUK has a team of dedicated stock specialists, trained to fulfil this role. They research and sort through quantities of product by varying qualifiers, such as manufacturer, model, date, grade, packaging and compatibility. With an in-depth understanding of the current market, they are also able to position stock by time lines and revenue achievements, focusing on the potential sales and routes to market.

RE-PROCESSiNgThe second process is to eliminate waste from recoverable product lines. It is essential to determine product that is saleable and product that is not viable for re-sale in its current state but can be recovered and reprocessed. All too often the latter would normally be considered as waste. We specialise in re-processing waste stock, converting damaged product into saleable stock lines, replenishing damaged packaging, and eliminating waste. To this end we are able to reprocess 25% - 30% more than our competitors.

06

WHAT WE DO

On average GSUK recover and recycle in the region of 313,000 units per month.“ ”

PROCESS FLOW

07

This involves sorting the stock into products with a value to process and products with no resale value, which is sent for safe disposal. Typically products with no value would include non-genuine, obsolete, or items relating to older handsets and technologies and accessories with little or no sale/resale value. This will usually be highlighted in advance, with prior notification of stock recommended for disposal.

Recyclewise operates under strict environmental guidelines for the transfer, storage and disposal of WEEE. To this extent we operate under both Paragraph 40 and 41 exemptions and are registered as AATF and WTF facilities to issue a Duty of Care Note and Waste Transfer Note for all disposals. Waste not considered as WEEE is recycled where possible.

SAFE DISPOSAL

Stock is graded by quality into one of four bands, new, 14 Day, Grade A and B. Once graded the stock is then sorted into working and non-working lines. Non- working product is then sent for repair where possible or for disposal.

Non-working stock holds no resale value or revenue opportunity so once separated from the working stock it is sent for disposal.

Stock is repackaged carefully to create saleable product lines, by re-using packaging from non- working items or replacing damaged packaging with white box materials or poly bags.

The stock inventory is given a value based on current market price for clients consideration.

Page 8: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

GSUK provides a complete managed service to collect, process and resell used, damaged and end-of-line handsets for our clients. Our main objective is to extend the useful life of these products wherever possible through cost effective recycling, repair and re-use.

In the majority of cases the mobile phones that are being returned or upgraded in the UK can still fulfil a larger global market demand. Once repaired and refurbished these handsets can be resold globally providing not only a preferable environmental solution to potential landfill issues but also providing a strong financial return.

The first stage in the process is to book every handset individually into our bespoke handset management system. This system has been developed to track every handset at every stage of our process and record these details for analysis and future process improvement.

The handsets are then put through a series of comprehensive tests to determine their functional condition. If necessary handsets are then repaired to increase their resale value. Each handset is then cosmetically graded depending on the amount of visible use the handset exhibits.

We have developed a global network of used handset traders and distributors to ensure that we can achieve the very best financial return for the handset stock. This in turn provides the best return for our clients.

Once more, conforming to our zero landfill policy, all excess materials are safely recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.

08

HANDSET RECOVERY

Page 9: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

Any materials that are not fit for re-use are recycled, from plastic and cardboard packaging right through to precious metals and other electronic components from the accessories themselves.

UNiTS PROCESSEd SiNCE iNCEPTiON

2008 only includes figures from September, when the operation was first rolled out to the industry.

One of the most product laden areas of our industry comes in the form of mobile phone accessory supply and manufacture. Each new handset is supplied with various accessories, and these can be replaced, upgraded and added to by the end user.

With each new phone, comes a new range of supplied and additional accessories, all with finite life spans, often linked with that of the handset it accompanies.

Our solution is to find routes to market for end of line products, to repair or refurbish where necessary and to make continued efforts and commitments not to send raw materials to landfill, helping to avoid piles of rubbish becoming part of our landscape, and leaving precious and valuable Green Belt the way it should be.

Our experience and product knowledge allows the successful processing of end of life, damaged and waste mobile accessory product lines. Our specially trained team use our ISO certified quality procedure to sort, identify and repackage saleable product from old stock.

Before re-issue, batch testing is carried out on each individual line, and inventories are made to include both quantity and grading levels. Stock items that are BER, waste packaging and extra materials are then processed for recycling.

With direct routes to market in place through our sister company, Genuine Solutions Ltd, we are able to eliminate brokers and middlemen from the process, gaining larger returns on products for our many industry partners.

Recyclewise is a division of GSUK, setup to facilitate the recycling of mobile phone handsets for charities and charitable organisations, using the same environmentally aware processes as followed in accessory recovery, and returning on average more than 70% of the handsets value to the charities concerned.

Offered in the form of a handset take-back scheme, the charities receive a fully managed service, including account handling, full marketing support in the form of collateral, Freepost envelopes and container collections from their corporate supporters.

Now in its second year, Recyclewise provides 25 charities and organisations with a complete take-back solution. These include the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Scope, The Childrens Trust and Sports Aid.

To find out more about Recyclewise, please visit us online at www.recyclewise.tv

CHARITY RECYCLING

Page 11: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

The Recyclewise take-back scheme is a fully working operation that collects, refurbishes and redistributes old and damaged mobile phone handsets. The money raised through the redistribution of these handsets provides charities with much needed, regular donations, helping them to carry on the good work they do on a daily basis.

The scheme is available to any charitable organisation, allowing them to offer their supporters and the wider community a chance to donate by handing in old mobile phones. In the UK alone there are an estimated 90 million handsets lying broken or unused in drawers and cupboards. The publicity and ease of schemes available to recycle mobile phones has made it a popular way to raise funds.

The Recyclewise scheme offers a sustainable source of fundraising, and one that is fully managed from start to finish. The ease of implementation allows supporters the chance to donate without putting their hands in their pockets each time they do so.

The recycling of mobile phones also has a huge benefit to the environment, preventing handsets from going to landfill, and re-use reduces the demand for the manufacture of new units, which reduces the consumption of resources and factory emissions.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT

Page 16: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

16

Our EMS is subject to regular audits, both internal and externally to conform with ISO 14001 certification. The audit provides the backbone to our annually published environmental performance and ensures we meet the required levels to conform with Health and Safety Legislation and Environmental Legislation.

Our EMS lies at the very core of our operation. It is ISO 14001 certified and designed to encompass every activity we undertake, defining the processes and procedures, ensuring each one complies with environmental legislations, positively reduces negative impact through waste materials and reduces the levels of consumption at every stage of operation.

The following elements make up our EMS...

1. Operations to be guided by an Environmental Policy Statement as outlined on the previous page.

2. The compilation and update of a legislation register, to which all procedures and measured results are bench marked against.

3. Audit procedure development and execution, ensuring the EMS is both working and achieving the desired results.

4. An environmental team meeting across all departments of the organisation, reviewing procedures, developing and improving on these procedures, addressing the issues of training and to set objectives and targets for environmental practices.

As well as being subject to internal audits, our EMS is designed to work in parallel with both ISO 9001 Quality Procedures and ISO 14001 Environmental Quality Procedures, meeting all the certified standards of these awards, including Health and Safety Legislation and Environmental Legislation.

3. HAzARdOUS SUBSTANCES. We carefully monitor all products that contain hazardous substances and are COSHH regulated. Waste products containing hazardous substances are safely contained until such time as technologies exist to allow for their recycling.

4. TRANSPORTATiON. Being fully aware of the impact caused by excessive fuel consumption and transportation is a key part of our success. We operate a two stage procedure to control the amount of transportation undertaken per operation.

1. No vehicle over three years old remains in company fleet. Each vehicle is emission tested annually.

2. Operations are calculated to minimal transport times as per our EMS. Processes exceeding this cannot be realised until they have been reworked to the target allocation.

1. REPROCESSiNg. The main aim of GSUK is to reduce wastage from damaged or end-of-life stock lines. These comprise of mobile phone handsets and mobile accessories such as batteries and Bluetooth headsets.

Reprocessing involves the collection and sorting of products, testing, re-packaging them before placing into inventory. These can then be sold as working product, conforming to our belief that re-use is the most effective method of recycling. These processes have been designed to operate at the lowest consumption rates possible, allocating any waste or excess material to our recycling team.

2. RECYCliNg. Our recycling team works across the group of companies, minimising all consumption levels needed and maximising efficiency. The waste material from our reprocessing operation comes in to be sorted by material and condition. It is here that we are able to salvage packaging materials to place back into the reprocessing operation.

GSUK improves its recycling efficiency as newer technologies evolve. This year we have operated a 94% recycling efficiency, which is 100% of all recyclable material. The non-recyclable waste is sent for safe storage.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: DIRECT ACTIVITY

Page 20: 2012/13 Brochure & Performance Report

20

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: INDIRECT ACTIVITYIndirect activity refers to elements and occurrences that are a result of our activities but outside of our immediate practices or control. It is vital for us as an organisation to not only be aware of these instances, but to actively play a part in reducing the impact they cause.

The main aspects are those occurring through the activities of our suppliers. Through their part in our operations they also become subject to issues such as waste and emission control, resource consumption and recycling efficiencies.

To this extent, we evaluate the environmental performance and activities of prospective suppliers, including those issues mentioned above, such as transportation, energy consumption and recycling.

Our systems have been designed to educate our partners, and are flexible in their application, allowing the installation of processes at partner companies and key suppliers. This allows our suppliers to benefit from the same benefits provided by our inhouse procedures, improving efficiency, becoming increasingly cost effective and most importantly, taking full responsibility for the impact their business has on the environment, and put in place the means to monitor and reduce this impact.

As well as aiding supplier operations, we are also aware of our materials arriving at other sites, ensuring that packaging and safe transportation conforms to all legislations, and that we constantly review and monitor the way these materials are transported and treated, whilst ensuring any directly occurring waste product is recycled effectively.

The last area of indirect activity comes in the form of end user disposal. This is where the Recyclewise specially designed take-back scheme comes into its own. Designed for charities and organisations to raise funds through the collection of old mobile phones and larger accessories, the scheme encourages users and companies to recycle for the benefit of others. The processes behind the scheme follow the same policies of re-use and zero landfill that govern each of the operations we undertake.

NEBOSH.(National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health)

The NEBOSH certification and qualifications are designed to provide and maintain a framework of robust, reliable and relevant qualifications that aim to raise the standards of occupational health, safety and environmental management.

We are the first organisation in the industry to hold this qualification and are certified to the highest standard possible, ensuring the wellbeing of our staff, our workplace, our business activities, as well as being able to reflect these standards and levels of care when working with partner companies or at client sites. The NEBOSH qualification is not just another example of responsible activity, but one that helps increase efficiency by creating a more effective working environment and reducing staff down time and absence.

BSC.(The British Safety Council)

The BSC is another organisation that involves safety in the workplace. We are accredited as a BSC member to protect the interests of staff dealing with manual labour activities, and supervisors that have to safely lead teams.

Since being BSC certified, each department has a health and safety officer and each and every employee is trained and certified to a Level 1 British Safety Council Qualification.

22

HEALTH AND SAFETY

governed by strict European guidelines and legislation, and we take our responsibilities in this area very seriously. To this effect we are certified in every possible area we can be, providing our partners with the confidence in not just our ability but the fact that we are authorised to carry out the work we do. It also gives us the satisfaction of knowing that we are taking every possible step we can to guarantee responsible business activities.

iSO 9001 ANd 14001.Our quality standards are very important to us as an organisation. Externally they provide our partner companies with a sense of confidence in our commitments to responsible business activities, but internally they provide us with the framework for everything we do. Our processes are designed in accordance with the quality standards set out by our ISO quality manuals, and our Environmental Management System (EMS) has been designed under the strict governing of our ISO 14001 qualification. This has become the benchmark that we measure our environmental performance by.

Our business model offers recycling, reprocessing and redistribution services to large organisations that need to effectively deal with old, damaged and waste product lines. We work with organisations such as the Environment Agency and EMAS to ensure we are fully accredited, regularly audited and working within the required legislative controls.

WEEE.(Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006 (SI3259) (the WEEE Regulations) are UK wide regulations that transpose the requirements of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive that was adopted by the EC in 2003 (2002/96/EC and 2003/108/EC). They place new responsibilities on producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). These include taking responsibility for financing collection, treatment and recycling of electrical and electronic wastes.

The regulations include targets for the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that will need to be treated, recovered and recycled. Sites that treat, recover and recycle or export WEEE will need to be approved. They will play a crucial part in providing evidence that different categories of waste have been treated and recycled.

As a company that deals with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) we need to ensure that we are being responsible with the handling of these materials. WEEE is highly

In 2011, we achieved all our goals, even though the bar continues to rise. For 2012/13, we want to continue our good work by reaching out to the communities we interact with (staff, local and business communities, the industry) and supporting nationwide initiatives that promote positive impact.

kEY gOAlS FOR 20121. To further improve on our environmental

performance, reducing the consumption of energy required.

2. To increase the amount of recyclable material through the adoption of new technologies and procedures.

3. To incorporate new methods of sorting to reduce transportation and damage that occurs through the initial stages of waste allocation operations.

4. To continue to work towards a zero landfill policy.

5. To maintain our 100% compliance record, incorporating any new legislation and implementing the necessary changes into our EMS.

6. To continue our commitment to the education, training and safety of our workforce.

7. To continue the active promotion of environmental awareness throughout our industry and extended communities.

By challenging ourselves to reach new targets, we achieve a greater understanding of the environmental benefits our work delivers, which can be passed on in the form of education to our partners.
