HistoryIn 1929, only briar patches covered a 175-foot hill located on the western outskirts of Sioux City, Iowa. But two people – Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke, Major Superior of the Sisters of Saint Francis, and the Most Reverend Edmond Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese – had a vision. They saw that hill crowned with a Catholic college for women. Mother Dominica and Bishop Heelan met on March 9, 1929 with members of the Sioux City community. Businessmen attending that meeting committed themselves to raising $25,000 to support the establishment of the college in Sioux City. After this showing of community support, significant events followed in rapid succession. On Sept. 18, 1930, the college, named Briar Cliff after the hill on which it is located, was dedicated. Four days later, 25 women started classes in Heelan Hall, the only building on campus. In 1937, the University’s two-year program was extended to four years. Fifty-five men were admitted to Briar Cliff in 1965 and co-education was formalized in 1966 with the admission of 150 full-time male students. The innovative Weekend College program started in the fall of 1979. The spring of 1980 saw the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A Master of Arts in Education was implemented in the summer of 2001. The college officially became a University on June 1, 2001. The University’s academic growth required an expanding physical plant. As time passed, more buildings began sprouting from the briar-covered hill: a four-story addition to Heelan Hall in 1948; the library and Our Lady of Grace Chapel in 1959; Alverno Hall, a women’s residence, in 1965; a gymnasium in 1966; Toller Hall, a men’s residence, in 1967; Noonan Hall in 1968; the Newman Flanagan Center in 1982; the addition of three classrooms in the theatre in 1986; the completion in 1988 of the Baxter-DiGiovanni Living & Learning Center; KLIF-AM campus radio station in 1987; and the renovated dining hall in 1989.

The $6 million, 43,350-square-foot Stark Student Center opened in the fall of 2000. Additionally, extensive renovations to Alverno Residence Hall have expanded Briar Cliff’s recreational facilities. The construction of the McCoy Arnold Center, completed in 2004, further enhanced recreational facilities. On Sept. 1, 2011, Briar Cliff formally broke ground for a $10.75 million addition and renovation of Heelan Hall, slated for completion in September 2013. The project will involve the addition of a three-floor wing with state-of-the-art science laboratories, a business case room, general classrooms and a four-story atrium. The Heelan Hall project will include new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems along with renovation of various classrooms and labs in the existing structure.

LocationBriar Cliff University is located on a scenic hilltop campus at the edge of urban development, yet minutes from Downtown Sioux City (population 83,000). In a tri-state area where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet, Sioux City is connected with other metro areas by Interstate Highway 29 and is about an hour away by air from Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and Denver.

AcademicsBriar Cliff offers over 40 academic majors and pre-professional programs. The Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Social Work degrees are conferred. Two-year Associate of Arts degrees are also available in two areas. The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management, Master of Science in Nursing and Graduate Management Certificate are also conferred. The academic year consists of two semesters with January and May terms.

StudentsMore than 1,150 students from across the U.S. and around the world attend Briar Cliff. Approximately 98 percent of undergraduate students receive financial aid.

Accreditation and ApprovalBriar Cliff is accredited as a degree-granting institution by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The education program of the University is approved by the Iowa State Department of Public Instruction for Certification of Teachers. The social work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing.

JOEPRIVITEREJoe Privitere is in his third year as the Head Wrestling coach at Briar Cliff. He came to Briar Cliff after serving as the head assistant coach at NCAA Div. I Davidson College for three years. Prior to that, Privitere was an assistant coach at The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston, S.C., from 2005 until 2007.In his two years with the program, the roster size has grown to nearly 40 wrestlers representing 21 States requiring a facility upgrade. The Charger wrestlers now call McCoy Arnold home for their practice venue. In the off season, Coach Privitere spends time on the Iowa Cadet and Junior Greco team staff helping develop Iowa summer wrestlers into winter champions. This past summer, the Iowa Junior Greco Team finished 2nd in the Country. His time there landed him the title of Northwest Regional Representative for USA Wrestling-Iowa. Recently, Coach Privitere accepted a scholarship to the NWCA Coaches Academy, a tremendous learning experience and opportunity he feels will help better himself and the program.

Out of high school, Privitere wrestled at the State University of New York at Binghamton, in Vestal, New York. The NCAA Div. II All-American was a three-year team captain for the Bearcats. The Johnson City, N.Y. native and two-time all-conference selection finished his illustrious career second on the school’s all-time win chart and having set the single-season win record with 38.In addition to his college experience, Privitere was also the 1998 High School National Champion, 1999 FILA Greco All-American, 2000 FILA Greco World Team Trial Champion and the 2000 FILA Greco World Silver Medalist. He earned his bachelor’s degree in human development and education from Binghamton in 2003. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in health, exercise and sports science from the Citadel in 2007 while serving as an assistant with the Bulldog wrestling program.Over the years, Privitere, who holds a USAW Bronze-Level Certification, has also been involved in numerous wrestling camps and clinics. Aside from coaching, Privitere will work in the Institutional Advancement office at Briar Cliff.Privitere took over the program’s lead from Damon Clayborne, who served as the part-time head coach for six years. Privitere is the program’s fifth head coach since Briar Cliff reinstated the sport in 1997. The 2010-11 season will be program’s 14th consecutive year and 18th overall season.

(+)+ This year’s Briar Cliff wrestling team is built on youth. Its 35-man roster features wrestlers from 22 different states, but only two upperclassmen; junior Devin Derocher and senior Matt Solomon, both of whom have been to the NAIA National Tournament. Derocher, a 133-pounder, won 14 matches a year ago and qualified for nationals. Solomon, a heavyweight, qualified for nationals as a sophomore. The Chargers sent six to the “dance” last year and finished 34th overall. Four of those national qualifiers return (Derocher, Luis Flores, Dillon Freeman and Abram Reynolds) and they hope to lead the program to even more success in 2013.

As a freshman, Flores led last year’s team with 23 wins and was named an honorable mention all-conference selection. Freeman went 14-21 as a freshman with a team-high seven pins, while Reynolds produced a 14-16 mark in his first year with the program. Another year of experience should help these returners as they try to improve on last year’s 0-9 dual record. A year ago, the Chargers’ dual line-up consisted of anywhere from seven to nine freshmen. This year’s dual line-up could also feature a number of freshmen as third-year head coach Joe Privitere and his staff brought in 23 newcomers in the off-season.

“Although we will still be young, we will have depth,” said Privitere. “We feel good about the experience our sophomores gained from a year of growing and competing. We also added a lot of skill with the incoming freshman class and that should lead to a real competitive room.”

125- The Chargers have the greatest depth at 125. Sophomore Nate Garcia returns after starting for the Chargers a year ago. Garcia is expected to be challenge by a talented group of freshmen including Devon Jackson, a two-time Texas state placer, Kyle Robison, a two-time Utah state champion and NHSCA All-American, Robiel Tesfaldet, a South Dakota state placer, Shawn Miller, a California state qualifier and Dylan Tornabane.

133- Team captain Derocher has honors at 133. The national qualifier is joined at 133 by freshman Alex Markle, a two-time Montana state placer and a trio of Iowa state placers in Hunter Langley, Casey Seubert and Hank Voss.

141- Flores, posted 20-plus wins a season ago and qualified for nationals at 133. He is expected to have honors at 141, but will be challenge by sophomore Dylan Kavanaugh and Spadoni, a two-time Washington state qualifier, who has the talent to contribute.

149- Sophomore Justin Powell returns after starting last season. Powell will be joined by freshmen Skylar Weber, a two-time Missouri state placer and a state finalist, Jeremy Qualls, a Florida state placer and Evan Lynn.

157- This weight class is expected to be highly contested. Sophomore Garrett Williams will be challenged by freshmen Meir Cioraru and Aaron Largey. Cioraru has 80 career wins under his belt, while Largey has 122 career wins and a California Masters Qualification.

165- Freeman returns with a year of experience, including mat time at the national meet. Sophomore Skylar Sanford and freshman Curtis Bright, a two-time Nevada state placer, will push for mat time at 165.

174- A pair of freshmen are expected to battle for honors at 174. Cole Ackerman, a two-time Nebraska state placer will compete with Matthew Cintron, who has compiled over 100 career wins.

184- The Chargers feature a pair of sophomores with starting experience in Daniel Harvey and Thomas Patterson. Patterson moves up to 184 from 157.

197- Sophomore Jake Baker, the team’s starter at this weight class last season, returns as the frontrunner. Baker will be pushed by freshmen state qualifiers Daniel Frazier and Jordan Watkins.

285- Reynolds returns as the team’s starter with a year of competition and national tournament experience under his belt. The program also returns senior Solomon, who reached nationals in 2011. A pair of freshmen, Alex Conover and Brian Ervin, are expected to provide even greater depth at heavyweight.

The 2012-13 Chargers will open the season, Nov. 9, with a dual against the University of Regina. Their first home dual will be Nov. 13 against Northwestern.
