The newly completed 85,000 square foot Health Sciences Building provides a state-of-the-art train-ing facility for healthcare professionals. The Health Sciences building houses programs in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Kinesiology, Medical Technology, Psychology, Radiologic Technology and Respiratory Therapy. The building was funded from the Lewis & Clark Discovery Initiative.

The Mansion remains a tangible testimony to the past as well as the future. Just as it was a Home to the Buchanan and Wallower families before, today it gains new meaning as the Home to all Southern Alumni. After being an integral part of Southern's original 1967 campus, the Mansion remained idle from 1992 to 2006. The Missouri Southern State University Alumni Association created a strategic plan in 2004. One objective was to renovate the Mansion.Alumni staff and board members began raising funds to restore the 4,000 square foot building with a substantial gift from Mary Helen Harutun, restora-tion efforts began on the exterior of the Mansion. The facade enhancement was completed in 2007.After the exterior work was done the Alumni As-sociation began to concentrate on restoring the interior. Through a most generous gift by Ralph L. Gray, the interior work began in 2009. After fi ve years of planning and fund raising the Ralph L. Gray Alumni Center was dedicated on September 18, 2010.

The center opened in September of 2009. The center provides 71,000 sq. ft. of space for students and includes three multi-purpose hardwood courts, two aerobic workout rooms, spacious and modern locker rooms, two weight and cardio exercise areas are with more than 100 pieces of equipment combined, and a 10-lap mile elevated walking/jogging track. The beautiful building is constructed with many windows which allow for inspiring views of MSSU's Bodon Soccer fi eld and the biology pond. Beimdiek Recre-ation Center is open to all students and faculty/staff/alumni/university affi lates with a membership.

    Jared BruggemanAthletics Director

Jared Bruggeman was introduced as the new Director of Athletics at Missouri Southern State University on June 11, 2009. He becomes just the fifth director the school has seen and begins his fourth year as head of the Athletics Department at Southern.

In his time at Southern, Bruggeman has helped to see an increase in fundraising, as well as a re-structuring in the Lionbacker Booster Club.

Southern has seen one of the most productive men's basketball runs in the program's history as the team has made it to two-straight NCAA Tournaments, as well as two-straight 22-plus win seasons and an MIAA Championship in 2011. That year, the team went 26-5, and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The women's cross country team advanced to the national meet once again, and in 2011, the softball program enjoyed a 13 game improvement and finished the season with an impressive 32-22. In the classroom, the Lions had more than 150 of the 325 student-athletes earn at least a 3.0 GPA.

Also, in his term as AD, the Lions have won all three of the Sonic Trophy's, an annual competition between Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State that pits the two programs up against each other to find out the top overall athletic program on the court or field of play.

The Lions had both academic and athletic success in 2010 under Bruggeman's leadership as the men's and women's cross country programs both won MIAA and NCAA Regional titles, while the women finished third nationally. The women's outdoor track and field team again won the MIAA title, while on the strength of those finishes, the Lions placed 38th nationally in the Division II Director's Cup Standings.

The Lions also had 133 student-athletes achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher, with 64 carrying a 3.5 or higher and 10 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Southern had an overall athletic department GPA

of 3.00. The success was not only limited to the classroom as the Lions boasted 28 All-Americans, ten All-Region picks, 72 All-MIAA selections, and 133 MIAA Academic Honor Roll members.

Bruggeman previously served as the Associate Director of Athletics at Northern Arizona University for four years, working as the school's compliance director, as well as overseeing the men's and women's track and field and cross country programs and equipment room. He was also in charge of overall athletic game management and facilities.

Prior to NAU, Bruggeman served as an Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Life at the University of North Dakota for four years. He also oversaw facilities and game management, as well as marketing and ticketing. He was the student-athlete Academic Coordinator as well as Director of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and during his time as Assistant AD, North Dakota was awarded seven NCAA postgraduate scholarships, two NCAA Division II Degree Completion Awards and the NCAA Walter Byers Post Graduate Scholarship.

Bruggeman also served as an assistant track and field and cross country coach at UND from 1998-01. He assisted in the daily operations of both men's and women's programs and played a major role in the recruitment of student-athletes. Bruggeman was also a volunteer assistant volleyball coach. A three-time graduate of UND, Bruggeman was an All-American in the indoor 800 meters.

Prior to his career in collegiate athletics, Bruggeman was a high school science teacher. He taught at Stephen Hempstead High School in Dubuque, Iowa and Red River High School in Grand Forks, N.D. Bruggeman also served as track and field and cross country coach at both schools.

Bruggeman earned a bachelor of science in natural science and a bachelor of science in education with an emphasis in physics from the University of North Dakota in 1994. He went on to earn a master's of education in educational leadership from UND.

Bruggeman and his wife, Maria have three children, a son Micah (10), and daughters Logan (8), and Reese (4).

Aaron Lewis begins his first year year with Southern as the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Corporate Sales after serving the previous four years as the Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Business Operations.

Lewis graduated from Missouri Southern in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in health promotion and wellness. He was a member of the Lions football team from '94-'98, where he played deep snapper and wide receiver. He

lettered three years and was voted co-captain of the team his senior year.

After college, Lewis moved to Allen, TX to work for The Adams Course. He was a certified strength and conditioning specialist, helping develop strength and conditioning programs for high school athletes and local faculty of the Allen school district.

In Search of ExcellenceIn Search of Excellence Its exciting to be a part of Missouri Southern athletics, both as a participant and as a fan. The Missouri Southern Lions have been Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Champions in football, mens and womens cross country, mens soccer, mens and womens basketball, baseball, softball, and tennis. The football team has been a winner, claiming the NAIA Division II National Championship in 1972 and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title in 1993. The Lions currently have two players on NFL rosters and two playing minor league baseball. The Lions softball team is a frequent participant in regional action, and in 1992 won the NCAA Division II National Championship. The mens basketball team hosted and won the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament and advanced to the Division II Final Four in 2000, while the baseball team has made numerous trips to the College World Series, fi nish-ing second in the nation in 1991. Both MSSU men and women have had national champions in track. In all, Missouri Southern has claimed 44 conference crowns, including 33 since joining the MIAA.

Quality AthletesQuality Athletes Each year Missouri Southern student-athletes are recognized by coaches around the confer-ence as All-MIAA performers, while several also are named to All-America teams. MSSU men and women have been named MIAA Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Yea r and Ken B. Jones Award winners (for outstanding student-athlete in the conference), and have also been National Player of the Year honorees, as well as fi nalists for national awards such as the Harlon Hill Trophy in football. In 2008 and 2009, the womens cross country and outdoor track and fi eld teams claimed MIAA titles with the 2009 cross country team fi nishing third in Division II. The Womens Track and Field and Cross Country team was ranked the fi fth best overall program by the Coaches Association in 2009-10. The mens cross country championship was the eighth in the previous nine years. During the 2004 season, both the mens and womens track and fi eld teams claimed MIAA Indoor Titles, the fi rst in school history. The Southern softball team has appeared in 18 of the last 20 conference tournaments. Mens basketball has earned 14 straight berths to post season tournament and has an overall record of 193-106 over last eight years. Womens basketball has gone to the last seven of the last eight conference tourneys and in 2004 had its best season since 1996. The golf team was fourth at the regional in 2009.

Solid StudentsSolid Students Of course the primary goal of any institution of higher education is to graduate its students. At Missouri Southern that philosophy is no different. Student-athletes wearing the Green & Gold also get the job done in the classroom. In the 1990s, the Lions boasted a graduation rate of 77.3 percent. MSSU student-athletes also have maintained cumulative team grade-point aver-ages above the 3.0 mark. For their efforts, Southerns student-athletes are routinely named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll teams, as well as the Academic All-MIAA, Presidential Scholar Athlete, and Academic All-District and All-America squads. In all, more than 50 Lions have been named Academic All-America.

Contributors in the CommunityContributors in the Community Not only do they perform on the fi eld and in the classroom, but Missouri Southerns Lions are also involved in the Joplin community. They work with such organizations as the Special Olym-pics, the Ronald McDonald House, the Boys and Girls Club, Adopt-A-Street, and the Childrens Miracle Network, and are frequently contacted by schools in the area with requests for special visits. Missouri Southerns student-athletes are frequently invited to serve as hosts and guest speakers for special events in Joplin and the surrounding communities.

Outstanding FacilitiesOutstanding Facilities Of course, to be competitive, teams need quality facilities. Missouri Southern has those. The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, constructed in 1999 with seating for more than 3,200, contains three gymnasiums, an indoor competition track, an incredible weight room and state-of-the-art sports rehabilitation facilities. In addition, Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium includes courts for basketball, racquetball and volley ball, and a six-lane swimming pool. The surfaces for football and outdoor track & fi eld at Fred G. Hughes Stadium underwent a major renovation in 2003. The football fi eld was given a new, top-of-the-line artifi cial playing surface and the all-weather track was equipped with a new all-weather surface, upgrading it to a national meet-caliber facility. Other outdoor facilities include lighted tennis courts, several soccer fi elds, two softball fi elds and one of the fi nest cross country courses in the nation. The course hosted regional meets in 1999, 2001 and 2004, 2007, as well as the 1999, 2007 and 2012 NCAA Division II Championships.

    Hal Bodon Pitch

Hal Bodon, the first head soccer coach at MIssouri Southern, posted a career record of 138-74-21 from

    1976-87.

When Dr. Hal Bodon first introduced soccer at Missouri Southern State College in 1972, he started with phone poles and chicken wires.

Bodon, served as a professor of communications for 25 years at Missouri Southern, in addition to his position as head soccer coach. He posted a career record of 138-74-21 from 1976-87, good for a .637 winning percentage. He retired from Missouri Southern in the spring of 1996 and went on to serve as a missionary in Port-au-Prince, Haiti with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The Lions' men downed Bartlesville Wesleyan College 1-0 in the first match on the field officially named for the individual who brought soccer to Missouri Southern.

Fittingly, the powers that be at Missouri Southern decided to honor the founder of Missouri Southern soccer, as Missouri Southerns home pitch was dedicated Dr. Harold Hal Bodon Field on September 9, 1998.

Now the Missouri Southern soccer field is freshly adorned with a scoreboard, sound system, lights, and a chain link fence, thus making it an attractive and picturesque venue that is the home for the Missouri Southern Women's squad.

In 1998, then Men's head coach, Geoff VanDeusen started the women's program as a club team and recorded their first win on Hal Bodon Field, a 1-0 victory over Allen County Community College on Oct. 1. Their first year as a full member of the

NCAA and MIAA was in 1999 and their first home win as an intercollegiate sport came two years later as the Lions defeated the University of Central Arkansas Bears 1-0 on September 15, 2000.

Since then the Southern women have gone 51-52-12 (.496) at Bodon Field.

In 2005 and 2006 the Lions' posted program bests as they went 9-1-1 in '05 and 7-1-1 in '06 at Hal Bodon Field in route to back-to-back second place finishes in the MIAA, also program highs, and their first NCAA Tournament berth (2006).

Alese Woolard enters her third season at the helm of the MSSU women's soccer program after serving four years as an assistant coach on former head coach Trevor Wachsman's staff.

Last season saw the Lions start 0-7-1 before they would tie a school record with five straight wins. In that

stretch Southern defeated Emporia State 2-1, conference rival Southwest Baptsist 2-1 (2OT), Fort Hays State 2-1 (OT), Washburn 2-0, and Missouri Western 2-0. The win over Washburn marked the second straight year that the Lions have won in Topeka against the Lady Blues. Southern would then win another four straight as the Lions would make their first appearance in the MIAA Post-Season tournament as the number three seed. Missouri Southern would face sixth-seeded SBU and win in the first round 1-0 and go on to play second-seeded Truman. The Lions would use a goal in the final seconds to tie the Bulldogs at 1-1 to force overtime and then defeat Truman 2-1 in OT and advance to play Central Missouri for the tournament championship.

In her first year at the helm Woolard led the Lions to a 5-8-5 overall record and tied the school record for ties in the season with five as well as setting a school conference record with the five draws. The 2010 season also saw three streaks broken. The Lions scored four goals in a game for the first time with a 4-1 defeat of Emporia State since a 5-1 defeat of ESU on Oct. 2, 2008 and the 2010 season also saw the winless streak at Washburn University get snapped as the Lions won 2-0. Their last win in Topeka, Kan. was on Sept. 10, 2004, a 1-0 OT win. The final streak broken was a seven year winless draught in Maryville, Mo. as the Lions defeated the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 2-1 on Oct. 2.

Prior to her coaching stint, Woolard enjoyed a solid two-year playing career under former head coach Trevor Wachsman. Woolard made 14

starts in the net for the Lions and held the opposition scoreless for the final 227 minutes of the 2004 campaign. She recorded 77 saves and three shutouts in her two years at Southern.

Woolard also was a four-year softball athlete and was a finalist for the 2004-05 MSSU Female Athlete of the Year.

In 2005 Woolard had one of the most productive seasons offensively in Lions history leading the team in batting average (.351), runs (40), hits (61), doubles (9), triples (3), home runs (9), RBIs (37), slugging percentage (.592), and on base percentage (.392). Her nine home runs in that season is still a

    single-season record for Southern.

Woolard also holds a NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping Diploma, as well as an NSCAA Advanced Regional diploma.

Woolard graduated from Southern in 2005 and holds a Master of Education in Workforce Development Education with an emphasis in Adult Education from the University of Arkansas.

    Alese WoolardHead Womens Soccer Coach

Michelle DimzaAssistant CoachDimza is in her fi rst season as the assistant soccer coach under Alese Woolard, making the transition from the fi eld to the coaching box after a stel-lar career at Southern.

Michelle started in 69 of her 70 contests for the Lions and recorded six goals with three assists on 86 shots, 39 of which were on goal. Michelles 86 career shots ranks her seventh all-time

in Missouri Southern soccer history. She is a three time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and was a two-timeMIAA Scholar Athlete while earning Honorable Mention All-MIAA in 2009.

Majored in Pre-Med fi nishing with a 3.94 GPA, she was a member of Alpha Chi Honors Society, a peer mentor and a biology tutor. Michelle was also named the 2011-12 Outsanding Graduate for Missouri South-ern.

After opening the 2011 season 0-7-1, the Lions were able to turn the momentum around during the second half of the year and close the 2011 season with a 9-3 finish. That strong finish vaulted them to within a game of reaching the NCAA Tournament and provides third-year head coach Alese Wolard plenty of motivation for this fall. That is a huge motivation knowing that, in all reality, we were a game away from the national tournament. I have a number of returners on my roster, a lot of them that played quite a bit last year, so for them it is that motivation that I do not really have to do. They know that we are close and we have the talent. They know that we can be there. It is not out of reach for us.

Coming into 2012 as the MIAA preseason number five team in the conference, Wolard feels that is right where her team belongs in the 15-team league, I was not really surprised to see us there. Definitely with the new teams coming into our conference, with Central Oklahoma being the only team ranked and historically a very good team, Northeastern is a very good team as well and so I was not surprised with being number five. Definitely with graduating seven players and six starters and one of our leading scorers among those six, for us it is a little added motivation (being predicted number five). They feel like we should have earned a little bit more credit and they know how hard they worked and to not get that recognition kind of stings a little bit, but it gives them a little bit of a fire to say hey this is what we can do.

The Lions welcome a familiar face to the sideline in 2012 in former Lion Michelle Dimza. After finishing up a stellar career in 2011, Dimza returns to the Lions as an assistant coach after a stint with a semi-premier league team in Seattle this year. That experience helped her improve her knowledge of the game and the game from a coaches point of view. Wolard knows Dimza brings a lot to the table, It is a great fit for me this year. She obviously knows the returning players having played with them and she has played at such a high level and her ability. The girls trust her and do not doubt her knowledge.

Despite the loss of seven seniors, Wolard does not have to look far for senior leadership as she returns six seniors to the squad this fall. They are my steady rock here. A lot of them have played the good majority of the minutes the last few years. The seniors are pretty much the center of my field with Corinne Tebbs and Cortney Sanders being my center back and stopper positions, and then Alicia Vonderheid and Candis Clark being my center-midfielders, and then Natascha Lord

and Megan Stueve being my forwards. They are pretty much right down the middle of my field in those critical areas and I expect a lot of them this year and to carry our team. They are going to have to carry the load, they know this is their last chance and they know that for them in the four years that they have been here, this is our best chance we have to reach our goal of making the NCAA Tournament.

Position BreakdownWith all but one of the players on the roster expecting

to see playing time, Coach Wolard will hope to use a deep bench to keep everybody fresh during the game. Next, we will breakdown each position group and get Coach Wolards thoughts.

Forwards (2 starters): Between seniors Lord and Stueve, Missouri State transfer Tiffany Laughlin, sophomore Katelyn Roberson and freshman Karley Thomas, Wolard plans to cycle these five players through quite a bit because as Wolard calls it, forward is a pretty endurance position. They got to have a pretty high endurance level, so all of them will see some playing time.

Center Midfielders (5 starters): Being the catalysts for the offense, the five midfielders are very important to having a successful attack. They are very important. Their responsibility is kind of two-fold; they are the bulk of our defense and then the bulk of our offense. I expect them to defend and get behind the ball and make sure it slows the other teams attack, but also be the transition people to get forward. I expect a lot out of my outside midfielders, they are going to be running a lot. My four center midfielders are all very sound technically in seniors Vonderheid, Clark, and freshman Kayla Clark and Hannah Ishmael. We do not have the speed we have had in the last couple of years, so we have got to work through our midfield a little bit more than we have in the past and the team knows that and recognizes that.

Backs/ Defenders (3 starters): With five players expected to see playing at time at this position, Wolard will look to returning second-team All-MIAA senior Corinne Tebbs for leadership. She is our anchor, has been for the last couple of years. In addition, the Lions will have senior Cortney Sanders, junior Megan Jensich, sophomore Samantha Zoltanski, and freshman Kimberly Hulse, and Kacie Hulse to add depth to this position. They are the last line of defense, so I feel we have a

2012 Preview cont'dvery smart group this year. They are very smart soccer players. They get themselves in good positions and do not get beat too often. I am excited to get going and see how it all works together out there.

Goalkeepers: The Lions welcome back two "very good" goalkeepers from a year ago in sophomore Beth Hammons and junior Abby Risner. "Beth has not had the playing time with graduated senior Randi Russell and Risner in front of her, but Beth is a very good goalkeeper. She would probably have been starting at a number of different schools in our conference, that is how good of a player she is and then having Abby, who played quite a bit last year splitting time with Randi, having that experience, both bring a lot to our table and they make our team better in practice, because our forward and midfielders know that their shot has to be good or the keeper is going to take it away. It is huge having that experience returning for us in the goalkeeper position, because they see the field and a lot of the communication depends on them, so I am excited to have both of them back as well.

    ScheduleWelcoming four new teams

into the MIAA conference this year in the University of Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State, the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood University in addition to traditional powers Central Missouri University and Truman University, Wolard knows her schedule and the conference are only going to get tougher. Wanting to prepare her team as well as she can for the rigors of conference play, Wolard makes a point to schedule tough non-conference opponents and this year is no exception. The season kicks off for the Lions with a

pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents in the University of Missouri-St. Louis on August 31 and Quincy University (IL) on September 2. Having made six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the

Hawks will provide the Lions will a stiff opening weekend test. The Lions follow up those two matchups with a pair of games at home when they welcome new Division

II member Southern Nazarene and traditional soccer powerhouse Abilene Christian to town September 7 and 9. The Lions then dive into MIAA conference play traveling to new conference members Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State September 14 and 16. The Lions will then host Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney Sept. 21 and 23. The following weekend the Lions will

travel to Truman and Lindenwood before hosting preseason conference favorite Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist October 5 and 7. A lone nonconference tilt at Southwestern Oklahoma will be followed by a final weekend of home games October 19 and 21 against Washburn and Emporia State before finishing the regular season at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State. A new wrinkle in the conference tournament will debut this year as the top four seeds will host the first round of games on campus. Wolard sees an advantage to getting one of these seeds, Just having that extra home game and not having to travel could be huge for us in the tournament. After those first round

games, it will be the highest remaining seed that will host the next two rounds.

A second-team All-MIAA performer in 2011, Senior defender Corrine Tebbs looks to be a team leader and anchor a solid defense this fall.

"She is our anchor." - Coach Woolard on Senior All-MIAA performer Corrine Tebbs.
