Types of Boats

These are three different types of boat.

• DinghiesDinghies are small boats, they can carry about 1 to 2 people. It does not have a cabin.• YachtsYachts are larger boats with cabins that can hold 1 to 15.• Tall shipsTall ships have several masts and a large crew.

Sailing basicsThe first thing you need to know about sailing is where the wind is coming from and how to move and turn.

• TackingTacking is when you push the boats rudder away from you. Watch out for when the sail comes across the boat. • JibingJibing is when you pull the rudder towards you. The sail will come across the sail even faster than a tack.

Types of hull

Sailing boats can also have different numbers of hulls. As well as single hulled boats there are doubled hull boats called catamarans and triple hulled boats called trimarans.
