APIS is proudly celebrating the second issue of Pacific Pencil. Our elementary students have worked very hard throughout the year to sharpen their writing skills and artistry. Our students are learning to think and communicate not only logically and critically, but also creatively and with empathy. As I flip through Pacific Pencil, what I see is our students’ joy and celebration of own learning and development of these skills. The work you see a mere snap shot of artists and writers in making. The “success” here is to find the love of challenges and confidence that, with perseverance, we can all be successful. I see a lot of success in the pages of Pacific Pencil and I would like to praise our students, teachers and parents for their collaborative efforts. Bravo!

Dear Friends of APIS;

Welcome to the second edition of “Pacific Pencil”. After a very successful first edition, our hard working team has once again put together a delightful representation of our students’ literary and artistic abilities. I hope you enjoy as much as I have, reading and admiring the great work our students have produced under the guidance of our talented faculty here at APIS.

These pages are filled with the wonderful works of students as they “aspired” and then “persevered” to become artists and writers. As I wrote last year, Pacific Pencil is also an example of team; another attribute we treasure at APIS. Pacific Pencil is the result of what happens when a group of dedicated teachers and parents rally behind an idea to make it great! This year I would especially like to acknowledge the significant contribution of Ms. Rachel Kim who filled in for Mrs. Sea when she was on maternity leave. Ms. Kim effectively took over and continued to inspire our artists during this time. I would also like to thank our parents who sponsored and committed significant time in putting together the exhibition for the publishing party! It is always a treat to see our parents in the school contributing to school projects.

We hope you enjoy the second edition of APIS literary and visual arts magazine! The APIS students have expressed their diverse ideas and thoughts through their work of writing and art. We are very lucky to have such young talented students. This year’s edition is more special because we organized the students’ work by grade level. You will see the process of our children’s development as a writer and an artist. My special thank you goes to Ms. Rachel Naehyun Kim who filled in for me during my maternity leave. Thanks to all of the APIS elementary students, classroom teachers, and Korean teachers. It was a very good day.

We traded strong Pokémon. I traded my BEST Pokemon. My best is my first Pokémon. We traded the Pokémon but Inha caught a strong Pokémon for me. Inha wanted to strong Pokémon. The Pokémon’s name was Metmom. And it can turn into every Pokémon. But…I got the same Pokémon! So we traded. Inha gave me Pichoo.

So I asked Eugene, “May I play with your ball?” So Eugene let me play with his ball and I played and played. It was time to go in. But I cry because my ball go over the two fence and I just go upstairs and I was still sad. I go home and I tell my mom that my ball go over the fence. The next day I go to school and opened my cubby. My ball was in there!

Kelly rang the home bell. “Who is it?” the mom said. “I am Kelly!” said Kelly. The mom opened the door slowly. “Surprise!!” yelled mom and Julie. Kelly was happy!!

Lu Lu was not finished with her food and my mom said you need to finish your food. And then Lu Lu finish so fast and then Lu Lu could play with me. Introduction to HolidaysFor traditional when holidays come they eat cookies and lots of yummy food. You could make a scrapbook to remember the past year. On holidays they wear pretty clothes so they could be pretty. They eat special food like dumplings. On other holidays they give cards and present. Holidays are special days. Because they gather families and celebrate holidays.New Years EveJanuary 1st begins at midnight or 12:00A.M. The last day of the old year is New Year’s Eve. Parents often let their kids stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve. First the adults bow to the oldest. Then the children bow to the families. People around the world celebrate New Year with fireworks and parties. How to celebrate New YearFirst we gather family and if it’s a holiday then you gather.Then on New Year’s they make dumplings and they are yummy.Then we eat dumplings and talk with the family.Then the adults bow to the grandma and grandpa.Then the children bow to the family.The grandma and grandpa says, “Stay and sleep here.”Different kinds of food we eat on holidaysOn New Year we eat dumplings. On 4th of July, we eat red, white, and blue dessert. We call this holiday the 4th of July or Independence Day.St. Patrick’s DaySt. Patrick’s Days is a special holiday that comes each year on March 17th. It’s a day for Irish people to celebrate their country. Many Americans and Canadians whose family came from Ireland honor their family’s homeland on this day. People whose family is not Irish can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day too. Oh, I forgot St. Patrick’s Day they do lots of march and parades.

All About TurtlesHara Choi

Do you know where turtles live? Turtles live in the beach and ocean. Sometimes, turtles live in jungle too! The female turtles lay eggs where they live like ocean and beach and place where there is lot of moisture. Turtles lay eggs under the sand to hide the egg from animals. I would do that also because I don’t want to feed my eggs to animals. You can buy turtle in pet store. If you are going to buy turtle, you need to buy few things in pet store. You need to buy: fish bowl, fish water, fish food (if you’re not sure what to buy, ask the clerk). If you go home, you need to see the following sheet and do that one by one. Do you know what turtles play? Turtles like to play out in the sun sometimes. But if your turtle is sea turtle, you must bring a fish bowl filled with water (if it’s a sunny day, fill the fish bowl with cold water). Some turtles like to play ball and if you teach your turtle well, I’m sure your turtle can play fetch (with water bottle cap). When I had a turtle, I needed to teach him a lot to play fetch! If you have a turtle for your pet, you need to feed them because they need to grow healthy. Instructions how to feed turtles: 1. Buy a can of turtle food from pet store (if you’re not sure what food to buy, ask the clerk) (if you don’t know where pet store is, feed them with fish). 2. Scoop the turtle food with any spoon and put it in your hand (2 scoops!) Feed them once a day. To be friendly with turtle, you need to give the turtle a lot of fun and love. You need to pat your turtle’s shell a lot (softly). Do that every day then lift the turtle and put it in your hand. If your turtle don’t look at you, you need to give more love and fun. Say nice words also! (to the turtle)

Ash and his mom go shopping. Ash liked toys. Mom said, “Follow me.” Ash mom left from the toy store. Ash look at the toys. Ah ha! The toy look like dragon. Ash said to his mom, “Could you buy it?” But there was no mom. Ash dropped the toy, BOOM! And ran out the toy store. Ash could not find his mom and scream AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! Ash walk until Ash cry, one man hit Ash because Ash was crying. Ash keep crying. He got bleeding nose, he’s feeling bad. His mom walked to the forest and find Ash. Ash mom call dad with iPhone. Daddy come and hit the man. Ash go to movies.

He doesn’t swim a lot.Chapter 3: Angel SharkAngel shark lives in the ocean floor like horn shark. Angel shark is very flat. It has a small spot. You can’t see the angel shark well because it lives in the ocean floor. It could hide in the sane because angel sharks color is same as the sand.Chapter 4: Tiger SharkTiger shark looks very scary. He ate almost all of the garbage in the sea. Tiger shark could eat a shark! His eye is small and white.Chapter 5: Mako SharkMako shark is the fastest shark. Its eye is black. That night, I was out of my bed. I was going to the bathroom. Then I saw a small creature. I stared… I wondered it was a mouse. But it was actually a cricket! I screamed, “ahhhhhhhhhh!” I shouted. My sister came running. I thought it was a boar. My brother Andrew came and said, “It is a boy cricket.” I thought so. My sister got an idea and she bring a plastic bag and take out her smelly sock and tie her smelly sock and the plastic bag and shook and gave it to me and shouted, “mooooooooooooooom!!!” Mom said, “Throw it outside!” I hate it when my mom says “Throw it outside.” Then…I got an idea. I got a book called Stories of Pirates. I read but then…The cricket was coming out on his head! I read to the next chapter. When it was over I went to sleep. Good night! In the morning I wake up. I stretch and then I was hungry so I walked and walked and walked and walked then…There was no cricket!!!!!!!!! I ran to my mom, she was sitting on a wooden chair. I asked, “Where is the cricket?!” Mom said, “I don’t know where the cricket is.” I was sad because there was no cricket but… I can get a new cricket!!

They hold a torch with fire and jiggle the torch. They perform the dance in the evening.Chapter 3: What Plant and Animal Grow?The trees in Guam are coconut trees. Guam has long grass. There are lots of poison animal like snakes and coconut crab. There are lot of sharks and dolphins in the sea.

James walked up to his cubby and saw his name tag. He was excited. He was jumping up and down. Now his teacher Mr. Kim was waiting. “James!” said Ralph. He gets bullied, pushed him and called him names. He didn’t enjoy school. On the way home on the school bus he thought he didn’t want to go back to school. The next day James gets bullied again. The next day and even the next day. Then one day, a new student came named Alex. He was brave like Madeline from The Secret Garden. He was a little different from the rest of the students. When James was getting bullied again during lunch time Alex stood up straight and said, “NO!” to the bully and the bully felt small. From that day on Alex and James became friends. James and Alex had a sleepover at Alex’s house and Alex’s mom made cookies for them. “Yah!” said the two.

I forgot to…memorize my lines!” So Ariel went to the bathroom and tried to read it and her teacher was looking for her so the teacher went to the bathroom and heard a reading sound. Ariel heard foot steps “click tap click tap” She opened the door and saw her teacher! “Oh my goodness!” she said quietly in her mind. She walked quietly to her teacher sadly and her teacher asked, “Why are you so sad Ariel?” Ariel answered and said, “Yes I’m so sad because I didn’t memorize my lines.” The teacher took Ariel to the stage and saw a little black chair and her teacher said, “Come quickly Ariel” So she went quickly to the black chair and sat down. The teacher said, “No I said to come here on stage!” And her teacher said, “Practice you line here Ariel!” So she went to the stage and practiced her lines. The teacher said, “I will bring the kids while you are practicing.” Finally the teacher was gone. I was new at APIS when I was at second grade. I was very shy that I didn’t talk with anyone. But suddenly someone came to me and asked, “Do you want to pay with me at recess?” “Yes” I said shyly. And my heart started booming. “Boom-boom-boom-boom.” It was Shannon who asked me she also told me who my teacher was Miss Lee at 2A. We played tag and other games for recess. We were friends for a long time. But summer vacation came and I wasn’t shy anymore. We had to say bye to each other! Because we have to go to third grade. And it was the first day of third grade! We weren’t at the same class she was at 3B and I was in 3A. We’re still friends! And at fourth grade I wish I could be with her!

It was a cool noon, when we stopped our bicycle and we pumped out. We saw water. Jack, Andy, and I played a game called, Don’t Get Water. So we tried not to get water on our clothes. I asked my dad, “Can we play in the water?” He said, “I’ll ask your mom.” We just continued playing the game. A few minutes past and I said, “Why isn’t he coming?” But suddenly my dad appeared and said, “Yes?” So we all said, Yay!” So we ran like a horse and got all wet. We splashed ourselves and there was a space between the flying water. We went through. We took off our shoes and ran all around. When we were done playing in water, I said, “I think we did a shower.” And we went to the bathroom to dry our hair. My mom put a mat in the car. Our clothes were soaking wet. Our hair was almost dry. I wanted to do that again!!!

First Time Catching Fish and CrabsBryan Jung

Where am I? I only feel a little bit of a wind. Oh! I was on the beach! My three cousins from America took us here. Their names are Shane (11 age), Kati (age 10) and Alan (age 7). After that, we found a fish net so we borrowed a boat to catch some fishes and we went to the middle of the sea and we put the fish net in to the water. We waited for the fish to grab. My heart started to pump! Suddenly, the fish net started to move! We pulled as hard as we could! Guess what?! We got six fishes! After that I caught four crabs but then those crabs bit my hand! I yelled, “Owy! Ow! OW!” My cousins zoomed to my dad my dad ran like an airplane! I saw my hand and it was bleeding really hard. But my dad put a giant band-aid on my finger so it got better. Ok. Once again if you close your eye on the beach, there will be a little bit of a wind but your heart will be glowing with light.

Everybody start to run to right side so I follow. But Jin run to left side so I think about how to catch Jin. When everybody start to run to right side then Jin is going to run to left side so I run to left side and catch Jin. So everybody change to zombies. But we have more time so we did again. It was something because Rian tag Ethan and Ethan tag me. And same thing happen again because Jin was the last people again! Jin was at the middle so half of the zombies go left and another went to right. So we catch Jin. I catch first so I was like jumping up and down and the recess bell rang. Everyone was sad because the recess end. But it was fun so we were still happy. And we go to P.E. happily. The end.

I lined up for Giant Loop (Giant Loop is a roller coaster) with Helen. Soon it was my turn. Helen got scared she went out of line. So I rode it myself and it was scary it went backwards. I was screaming so loud the person next to me blocked his ears and I was about to say sorry but I was shy. First the roller coaster went lift, then right and went backwards. I felt like I was falling down the roller coaster. When it finished, I felt like I was going to throw up because I was so dizzy and especially because the roller coaster went backwards. I said to myself, “Next time I ride Giant Loop, I will try not to scream.” I went to Helen and said, “I was screaming.” She said, “Yeah, I could hear you from up there.” “I was embarrassed because I thought I was the loudest in Lotte World,” I said. I will always remember this because I never rode a rollercoaster going upside down before.

Suddenly, there was a lot of 4th graders who came out, so I just checked the ball as hard as I can. The goal keeper caught the ball, but… he missed the ball and I scored. I was so happy, I ran around the field. The goal keeper could have caught the ball again. Then the whistle blew. That means it’s time to go. I want to play more, but I can’t. Third graders won 6 to 1. Then I went to my class and work.

I found my seat and sat down. I put my stuff in my cubby and desk. Just then, Sally came in I was surprised! I said, “Hello!” Sally just smiled and waved at me. Then I looked at Miss Lee. She looked nice and pretty because she had always smiled and had a really bright smile. The bell rang everybody came in even 1B girls and boys. We had to do ELA, after we did morning meeting! When it was lunch time we washed our hands and got lunch. Then we got in line for recess. After recess we did word study. I was nervous at the first time but it was nothing to be afraid of. Actually, it was happy that I was in second grade. My first day in second grade was better than I thought.

People that were playing Cass all ran screaming, “Ahhhhh!!!!!” Then the zombie ran to me so I shot the freeze gun and then I ran as fast as I could. We ran and ran and the zombie was now 3 zombies because the zombie tagged 2 more people so we ran and kept running. Then the zombie was in front of me then the zombie got me but it was time to go. I said, “wheeeewww.” Our class all sighed, “Ahhhh.” Then we ran to the line. We wished that we could never end this. Then the door opened and we sadly went in the door. But we were still okay because we have recess every day and we even had lunch recess so we thought about it and went inside the classroom thinking about our fun recess time. We started studying because we had our fun recess. I wanted to do it again.

Late after school, I asked Jin and his mom if I could come to his house. They said I could. I got into Jin’s car. It was warm and soft. Suddenly, I hear the car roar! As we took off, I teached Jin about my Korean comic book called Hpungi. Then we arrived at Jin’s house. This is about the time when I tried to play the tsunami game. In Jin’s living room, there was a brown, round sofa that spins. But, there was no one to spin it for the game. So we called Jin’s younger brother to spin the sofa. He helped and ran to spin it. It felt like that I was in the middle of the sea. Then suddenly, SPLASH! I fell into the wave. The sofa spun faster and faster! The cold wind felt like water and Jin’s younger brother looked like a huge sea monster chasing after me! Then, not only a tsunami but a volcano explosion, earth quakes and a tornado appeared out of nowhere. Then, I started to get dizzy. I thought that a huge wave was about to swallow Korea in one gulp! Then, everything stopped! Everything was still. Then Jin’s mom came up and said it was time for dinner. Jin said I could do it again. But we hear Jin’s mom say, “Come and eat your dinner!” So we did. Going to Jin’s house was a very good time for me. It was very fun.

It was Monday and the sun was bright as a laser beam. Our class were waiting for the recess time. Ring, ring, ring, the door bell rang and everybody in our class ran outside and lined up fast as everybody could. Then all of us went down to the playground. Then we came to the playground but it was locked so Miss Léger opened the door and we dashed and did skunk in a barn yard. Then Rian was it so he counted to ten. Next he ran to us and tagged us. This recess was different because I didn’t be the tagger and I don’t want to be a tagger because I’m too slow to catch anybody and I need to be the tagger until recess finishes. And it makes me bored and sad because everybody is running away from me and I have nobody to play. After, everybody got tagged it was time to go and it was fun, and happy recess.

My mom walked over to the black thing and read the sign. It said it was a dress made out of hair. “Disgusting!” My mom exclaimed. To me, it was cool. I went closer. It was braided thickly. I thought it will be a good dress to sell in a store if it was made out of cloth. I wandered around the dress thinking where the person would have found all that hair. The dress would fit on an adult. I didn’t think all that hair would come from one person but the size and color was the same! Where did that person get that idea from? I was curious. I turned on my audio guide. It first told about the person and about to tell about the dress when a bunch of words I didn’t know started pouring out like an overcooking

It was Tuesday lunch time, I couldn’t wait because 3rd graders are against fourth grades in soccer, so I hurried. When it was recess time, it was noisy because there were many students who couldn’t stop talking. Next, we went outside to the field and played soccer. Then we argued, that we have less players and they have more. The 4th graders said, “Who cares.” Then Justin in 5th grade came and agreed that that it’s not fair that they have many players but we have less players so Justin was in our team. Then it was even players. Now, the game started, we kept passing because we could make them tired. Then, when the fourth graders got tired, this was the chance to score a goal from 4th grade. Next, we use all of our power to score a goal. Then we were close to the goal then when I passed to Jack, suddenly Justin in 4th grade tackled Jack so he got hurt. So we got worried if Jack is ok or not. Then our teammate shouted, “It’s a penalty.” So they answer, “fine.” Last, Jack let me kick because he got a pain in his leg and I’m the only hope that Jack could believe me. So when I checked the ball, Joshua saw another ball, so he kicked the ball to the other goal but Joshua didn’t concentrate on the penalty, so I scored a goal. Suddenly, everyone cheered for me. Then, when the whistle blew we ran fast as a wind and line up quietly. This was our best soccer game.

Then Jack said, “Hey, it is number order.” I didn’t like number order because I was stuck in between boys like a sandwich. When everyone finished lining up in number order we headed to music. I had so much fun today!

I was worried when my sister accidently dropped an ice pack on my third toe in the afternoon that was almost turning to night. Ah-Oh it started to bleed and bleed! My dad washed up the blood and put medicine. Then with the wet tissue, he washed up the blood and put a bandage.I lay on my mom’s bed. I slept because it was night time. Next day, the birds weren’t singing. I had to go to the hospital. First, I had to ride my dad’s car and go to a hospital but the hospital didn’t have an x-ray, so we went to a different hospital. The hospital was huge. I first got an x-ray. Then they put a shot on my third toe. After about one minute, they sew my toe! It hurt so badly. I cried and cried. After it was done I had to put a shot in my butt. That hurt badly too. I went out of the hospital. I rode my dad’s car and went to my favorite Japanese food, the Sushi restaurant! The Sushi was delicious, but the part where they sew was bare feet. It was super hurting. I never wanted to miss school but I had to because I was hurt. It bleed and bleed. The blood didn’t stop coming out! I went home with my dad with a little frown on my face. I read some books. My mom came so I ate dinner, then I closed my eyes with a dream.

I was lying on the bed. When I was seven years old, I was lying on the bed and my two sisters Danielle and Grace were playing train around me. I was kind of mad because they were kind of trying to bother me. But a second later, one of my sisters accidently tripped over the plug. It was right next to me. Then the dehumidifier fell down on my head and the blood came out very much from my forehead. The one of my sisters called “Mom!” My mom and dad called the ambulance and then the ambulance came very fast. I thought “Oh my gosh, I can’t move my body!” Dad and I went to the hospital, but there were no doctors. It was big trouble and I thought “What!” But the nurse came to me and then she washed my head. So I slept at the hospital. The next day, Dad and I went to another hospital. It was better and bigger. It was a terrible day. I realized that when someone is bothering me, then I have to say “Stop” because it makes me feel bad when someone is bothering me.

Once I went to a wedding. It was my aunt’s wedding. She wasn’t my real aunt, she was my honorary aunt. I call her my aunt because she’s close to my mom. When I saw the bride, the bride looked weird because her makeup was too strong or thick. She looked like a monster, and also happy. I think the bride wants a baby. I felt sick because nothing was fun. When it was our turn to sing my face blushed. When I was on the stage I laughed in the microphone, so my face got redder so did my friend Chaerine’s. Then suddenly the Sunday praise teacher made a mad face at us. She bit her lip so that gave us a hint, so we stopped laughing but we couldn’t help it. I smiled and sang. When the song began I really didn’t want to sing but if I sang I thought I’d get something special like a treat. In fact I did get something and it was a chicken. I thought if I sing again somewhere else, I will get something special.

The tenor saxophone finally arrived at my house. I was so happy. I opened the case but there was a silver saxophone. It was shiny, and I really wanted to blow it. My mom said “No, you can’t blow it.” The next day, I went to the parking lot and blew it in the car. It was fun, but it made a strange sound. But, it was still fun to blow the saxophone. I wanted to take the saxophone to school because my saxophone couldn’t compare high or low sounds. But my mom wouldn’t let me. I was really sad. The next day I was going to school. My mom said “It’s heavy, so don’t take it to school.” And I said “OK.” My mom almost let me bring the saxophone to school. But finally, I brought it to school. My new saxophone can’t compare the high note and low note. My music teacher Mrs. Holbrook will try to fix it. I was so happy but i t ’s my f irst t ime I brought it to school and everyone said “Do you have two saxophones?” So I said “NO, the new one is mine and the old one is the school’s,” and they said “NO” and they said “WOW.” I was happy when they didn’t ask me about it anymore.

When I Went to Colin’s HouseDae Ho Ha 4A

After school I went to Joshua’s house for 3 days. Joshua, Colin, Chase and I played soccer for two hours. Colin’s mom and Joshua’s mom bought us ice-cream. We sat on the field and we ate ice cream. I asked, “Is Futures Best fun?” Colin said, “It is very fun.” Joshua said, “Sometimes we play games.” Chase said, “The teacher is very nice to us.” Colin said, “Joshua and you can come to my house.” I asked Joshua’s mom “Can I go to Futures Best?” Joshua’s mom said “of course.” Joshua asked if we could go to Colin’s house. Joshua’s mom said okay. Later we rode in Colin’s mom’s car and we went to Futures Best. Joshua and Chase were playing games while Colin and I were relaxing. When I tried to sleep we arrived at Futures Best. We went to a store and we ate Kim-bap and then bought drinks. After we went to Futures Best we went to Colin’s house. We rode in Colin’s car. While Colin’s mom was driving, we played a Nintendo game called Super Mario. Chase asked, “Can you beat it for me?” I said okay so Joshua and I beat it for Chase. Thirty minutes later, we arrived at Colin’s house. We went inside and I was surprised because Colin’s dog kept barking and I felt very excited. Chase and I played a game and Colin and Joshua ate noodles. Later Joshua and Colin made a game. The rules were to make two teams and then throw the dolls. We needed to get more than the other team, then you win. Colin and I were one team and Joshua and Chase were the other team. Joshua kept throwing the doll but we didn’t throw the dolls and we kept it. Joshua’s team only had three dolls. Suddenly Chase betrayed Joshua and he took the last three dolls. Joshua was so surprised and he lost. After Joshua’s mom took us back home. I felt very happy because I got to go to Futures Best with Joshua and Colin. I was very lucky to go to Colin’s house and play with Chase, Joshua and Colin. I said next time I will ask my mom and come to your house. I was very happy. Joshua and I said bye to Colin, Chase and Colin’s mom. I told Joshua when we were riding in the car that I think we needed to do our homework first and then sleep. Joshua’s mom said that I was right and Joshua agreed too. I said, “Today was one of my best days ever!”

Of all the years I’ve been to school, I’ve never met someone as funny as Ms. Cho. The reasons why Ms. Cho is funny is because she sings in class about things that happen in 4A, she is a trickster, and she copies our emotions. The first reason why Ms. Cho is funny is because, she sings in class. On a boring day, Justin was about to explode because he had to go to the bathroom. Finally, he said, “Bathroom! Can I go to the bathroom?” Obviously it was math time so Ms. Cho would never let him go. Instead of telling him, she sighed and started with ‘oh’ and sang all about Justin wanting to go to the bathroom. The second reason why Ms. Cho is funny is because she is a trickster. Ms. Cho is a trickster because when we tried to line up for snack, she said to push in our chairs but everyone pushed in our chairs and lined up. The other time when we were sharing our essays, Ms. Cho asked Rachel to read her essay. Rachel asked,” If I read my essay, can you sing for us?” Ms. Cho answered, “Okay.” So we waited until Rachel’s essay was done. After that, she just said,” Go back to your seats and open up your math textbooks.” We were all confused because she didn’t sing for us so we argued, “You said that you would sing for us if Rachel read her essay!” With a chuckle, Ms. Cho said, “You got tricked! Ha ha ha!” The last reason why Ms. Cho is funny is because she copies our emotions like when she followed Lucy’s “hello,” just like Lucy and Justin’s “aw, man” just like him, but in a girl’s version. It was so funny. Actually, she does it better than the originals. Also in read aloud, she reads just like the character’s voice I imagine. I think that others should care about teachers being funny because many teachers could be mean and dull. Ms. Cho is different. A lot of people think that if teachers are not scary then the students won’t be smart, but that’s not true. If teachers entertain students then we will be eager to learn. Sometimes when Ms. Cho gets serious, she gets very strict, so when Ms. Cho gets extra serious, we can know that something’s wrong. I realize that Ms. Cho tries very hard to teach us well and make us laugh. I think that effort makes her the best teacher I’ve ever met!

At Chuseok, a lot of my cousins came to my house to celebrate the ceremony. After the ceremony, my mom and aunts talked about lots of funny things. While everyone was cleaning up I heard third Aunt saying, “How about going to Gomory?” Gomory is a house that my aunt bought in the countryside. “I’m not going, I’m tired,” second Aunt said. My mom said, “Okay, we’ll go.” I wished my mom said no like my second aunt. I told my dad and he said the word, “yes.”The telephone rang and it was from my uncle. “I think it would be better if we just used your car instead of both cars,” he was telling my dad. “I was thinking that too! We’ll be there in thirty minutes,” my dad said. We arrived at my aunt’s house. Aunt and uncle were waiting outside for us. When we were almost there, I was sleepy and sort of tired. My dad said, “Lucy, don’t sleep. We are almost there!” We finally arrived at Gomory and I wondered what we would do. We looked around and saw there were a lot of differences from before. We ate dinner with rice cooked from a ‘gamasot.’ I realized it tasted and smelled different from the rice I was used to. That night I fell asleep and didn’t realize it. When I woke up the next morning I wasn’t where I remembered being. Later at breakfast, mom told me about what had happened. It was funny listening to the story about what I was doing in my sleep.

I am talking about that Korea is the best place to live. It is a nice place and also has nice people, too! So I think Korea is the best place to live. There is even a lot of grass and traditions. I will talk about Korea. Korea has a lot of grass and trees all over. I think there are some everywhere except for the city. There were a lot before but we don’t have as many as before. So I think we need to plant more trees. Korea has lots of good food. For example, there is kimchi. It is spicy but it is yummy and it feels good when we bite kimchi. Korea has the Bell of the King. Some people say that they put a baby in the bell to make it. So a lot of people go there and see it. This is my opinion about my topic that is Korea is the best place to live. My New Pet StaggyColin Kwon

During the night at 9 o’clock, I was begging my mom to go to E-mart and buy a stag beetle. “Can we go to E-mart if we have time?” I asked. Then my mom said, “Yes, we have time so we can go to E-mart and buy a stag beetle.” I was so eager to buy it, so I was saying, “Yay!” out loud. We went to get our jackets and our wallets, and then we went straight down to basement 3. We went to my mom’s car and drove away. As we went on, I felt kind of concerned because I was thinking that the beetle might be able to fly away or it could die somehow, but my brother cheered me up, so I felt a little bit better. When we arrived at E-mart we went to the pet store and I saw fish, bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, iguanas, stag beetles, rhino beetles and dung beetles. We just bought a male stag beetle which is also called a Dorcus Titanius Cansticolor. I also got a cage with beetle jelly, dirt, logs, a feeding bucket, and a bug protector. Then we went back in the car and headed back home. When we arrived home, I started to make my new stag beetle’s cage. First, I put the dirt inside the cage. Second, I took out the logs and made a playground for it. Third, I took out a green jelly and put it inside the feeding bucket and put it inside the cage. Finally, I took out my stag beetle and put it in its cage. I named him Staggy because he grabs a lot! Staggy has been stressed out these days, and when I take him out, he grabs onto something to stay in the cage! Unfortunately, Staggy has passed away because he was lying down on the log. I am so sure that he is in heaven.

“Oww, who pushed me?!” A monster named Solo said as he tripped on the park ground. Solo felt so much pain, so tears almost fell from his eyes. However, he stood up, and said in an assertive way, “Hey look where you are going,” but when he looked down there was only a sparkling conch shell sitting on the park ground. “Oh, maybe this thing made me trip over.” Solo kind of felt sorry for no idea. He picked it up and wondered why it was there and whose it was. Then he realized that it was no ones and decided to keep it. He was so glad because he had never been to an ocean. He also named it Winner. He calls it Win. Now that he got a sparkling beautiful shell, he skipped on his way home with his shell in his arms, but suddenly Solo heard something around the trees. Solo got confused, so he went closer to the trees that were in the corner. Then an evil-looking monster burst out of the trees and took Winner out of Solo’s arms. “Hey, don’t take Win!”Solo yelled with his loudest voice ever, but it was too late. Solo decided to find Win to get him back again. He looked for some clues to find where the monster went to. Then, he saw coins that had fallen on the ground. Solo smiled. Solo followed the coins until he arrived to an old smelly basement. Solo went in, very carefully, and admired, “Wow, the shell is so beautiful,” but something was not right. When Solo went in the basement, there wasn’t anyone except for Win and him. He only cared about the shell. “Ahhhhhh!” Solo shouted while he was running like he was about to get eaten by a three headed monster. Then he stopped running and said, “Oh, that was close.” When So lo go t f a r away f rom the basement, the monster came out of the basement and laughed, “Ha, ha, ha!” Solo had gotten the wrong shell. Once he real ized th is, Solo was so disappointed and forever he was sad and unhappy. Sometimes he thought it was only his fault, but sometimes he thinks one shell wasn’t really so special.

I ran to the table and put down my spelling test. I ran to play with Lu Lu. But right then, I heard my dad say to my cat Timmy, “Bye Timmy.” I ran to my dad and said “Why did you say that? Why did you say ‘bye Timmy’?” “Because he is going to Auntie Sophia today” my dad said. “No, Daddy, please no!” I shouted. “Sorry honey, we have no other choice” he replied. “What do you mean we have no other choice?” I asked.“I thought I told you. We are moving to Korea.” “Yeah! But can Timmy come with us?” I asked.“Can’t. Sorry honey” Dad said. I ran to Timmy and said “I love you buddy. I ’ l l miss you so much. Be safe. Be nice to cousin Belinda.” Timmy curled around my legs and said “I love you.” I knew that he said that because of his face. His smile was upside down and he was staring at me. “Honk, Honk.” I looked out of the window. It was my mom’s red car but Auntie S. was in there.

Then I started crying.”Yeah! You’re crying for joy, right?” my dad asked. “No!” I said. When a day passed, we arrived in Korea. Then more days passed. It was the day to go to school. I saw my dad from the bus when I got home. I walked up the big mountain and then when I arrived home, I opened the door. Then I heard bad news and good news. The bad news was my buddy died. My buddy was Timmy. My dad told me that Belinda saw Timmy choking after he drank water and after they brought him to the hospital he died. The good news is he is in heaven. Since he’s in heaven, he is in my heart so I can remember him forever and I hope he remembers me.

The Life of a Dandelion SeedGyu Hyun Lee

One day I became a dandelion seed. I hated being dandelion seed. So I wanted to fall down with my hands so I was trying to touch myself, but I didn’t have a hand! Suddenly, the wind came to me. I fly away. When I came to the ground, I realized that I was still alive because of the seed coat. But I was sad. So I just grew into a plant. When I grew up to be an adult plant I had hair. Then somebody pulled me out and blew at me. My seed went down to the ground and it was my son. So I was dead, but my son grew and grew and became an adult plant. But now the people didn’t blow at him. It was because he grew at the forest where there was nobody else. So he was very scared to be there because he thought there would be animals like lions and tigers. So he couldn’t sleep because he was very afraid of that. So he just waited and waited until the sun grew up to the sky. Finally, the sun came up toward the sky. He was not afraid now because the sun touched him and he felt better now. Beside him there were people. He felt very good about that. The people pulled him out of the forest and blew. The dandelion was happy and he’s not afraid now.

8:27 AM One Thursday I was sick. My mom told me to stay home and rest while she got some groceries. I said yes. That was the beginning of my torment and horror, well sort of.

1:30 PM It was time for lunch, nobody had came, so I fixed myself a microwavable snack pocket and tried microwaving an egg. I set it for 3minutes. In the first thirty seconds nothing happened. So I took it out and put it on a plate all of a sudden the egg started to grow bigger and it popped and the hot juicy plumes of a semi fried gooey liquid touched my hand and I started screaming as it dug through my flesh.

Twenty five minutes after the disaster, I treated myself with rubbing alcohol then I heard keys heading from the back yard. I thought it was my mom, but I didn’t hear the garage. Then I thought it was a thief. I was running around frantically, tripping over everything and trying to hide. Until I realized I had the power of weaponry and technology.I quickly ran and got my BB gun. With the BB gun trembling in my hands I put my finger on the lever when she or he opened the door. I was so startled I shot it and my dad got so mad.

I’ll tell you about why a good friend should use good words. Good friend should use good words because it is one of the greatest ways to respect your friend. Every day if you do something wrong to your friend, you apologize and say that you won’t do it again, but you do it again and again. So, we should truly start respecting our friend. One good, perfect way to respect your friend is using good words to your friends and being kind to your friends! It is very easy, right? These day people also use bad words to their friends or bad actions to show their feelings. If someone does something wrong they say something bad back to other, and I think that is preposterous. I understand if it is hard to only use good words as you live, because it is also hard for me. Also, the people who are actually using bad words doesn’t know that it is bad, but actually it is really a horrifying thing to do. It is also an action that a bully does.So, if you don’t want to be a bully or don’t have any friends around you, be kind and use good words to your friend. So, they won’t all leave you.

That night I asked my dad again if we could go to the Malibu Beach. “I really want to go there, dad. Can we please go?” “Juanita, just wait. We might even find some cool stuff there.” The next day we woke up early in the morning to visit some cool parts of L.A. The whole ride in the car heading to Santa Monica Pier I was very sad that we wouldn’t get to go to the Malibu Beach. But when we got closer, we saw a roller coaster and an amusement park. I got very excited. I started jumping up and down asking my brother, “Can we please get on and ride it, it looks so cool?” He just kept on telling me to calm down. We go t a l l ready and wen t i n t he amusement park’s shops. I saw some really cool stuff there! Then we went to the back of the park. While looking around my dad and brother wanted to play some shooting in the goal game while my mom and I took some pictures of them. After a while my mom and dad went to have lunch while my brother and I bought tickets for the roller coaster. It looked high and scary, but I kept on saying to myself, “I can do this!”

Finally, after waiting a long time we got in. We secured ourselves and got ready to go up the roller coaster. First, it went really slowly. Then, the roller coaster went down and got faster than ever. It was like 20 seconds long so we could go ride it again. After the ride, we saw our pictures that they took when we rode it. Then I started smelling all the really delicious things so I got hyper and I ran up to my mom. Then I went with my dad to buy me something to eat. After all, I really liked that amusement park.

Did you ever visit Yosemite? I have been to Yosemite. When I went to Yosemite it was beautiful. It was so famous that there were no tents to sleep in, but we were lucky we had a tent to sleep in. Yosemite is a beautiful place with many things to do and see. We saw a lot of nature in Yosemite, I saw a deer that was afraid of people because when the other people were trying to go near to the deer, they ran away. I was trying to go into the tent, there was a metal box next to the tent so that we could put the foods in it, but we put the foods in the car. We checked the car the next day to see if the car was ok, and it was fine. In Yosemite, we can do a lot of different activities like hiking, camping, rock climbing, biking, horseback rides, rafting and ice skating. I went rafting with my older cousin so my brother and my older cousin wanted to do the rowing. So my dad, my mom, and I let them do it. While the two were rowing, they slowly got tired so my dad was doing it for them. After a while they did it again. My mom, my dad, and I were sitting at the back but there was a duck that was behind our boat. My dad had bread in his bag so we fed the duck and the duck kept following us so the bread was gone. We had nothing to eat. There are a lot of things to see in Yosemite like waterfalls, animals, and plants. Some of the trees are more than 100 years old and some are more than 1,000 years old. Some of the waterfalls were small, but some of the waterfalls were big. When we went there, it was awesome. I remember clearly about this place because it was the most fun time that I played with my brother and my cousin brother.

“AH!!!” I was coming down from the middle of a hill. My face was red because my dad forced me to ride my skateboard down the hill. I thought I was going to die! Before I went down the hill, I held my breath. I shuddered for a second. When I was coming down the hill, I screamed loudly. When the skateboard stopped, I was very shocked. Then I realized that I was at the bottom of the hill. I was smiling because I didn’t die. After that, I skateboarded down the hill 15 more times. But soon my Dad said, “This ride will be your last ride today. We have to go.” I was very disappointed. It was going to be my last ride this time. I climbed all the way up to the top of the hill. When I looked down, I thought I was going to faint because the hill seemed so steep. For me, it looked like the “road of death.” But I still wanted to ride the skateboard to the death. I could feel my heart beating hard and fast. I pushed forward and started down. But suddenly I could feel the road becoming bumpy. I could see rocks and pebbles rolling down the hill. I regretted my decision to go down a last time. I tried to control the skateboard but it was not easy. So I jumped to the other side of the road where there was grass. It saved my life. That day I was scared of skateboarding because the skateboard went down the hill so fast. But in the end, I learned that even if something is hard, if you try many times, it will become easy.

Airbus was made in 1970 as Airbus Industrie. Three countries, France, Germany, and UK made Airbus. Airbus was made to compete with U.S. companies like Boeing, McDonell Douglas, and Lockheed. Their first planes were the A300 family. It was a 2-engined plane with 320 seats. The car company, Rolls-Royce made the engines. The engines were powerful. Airbus A310 was made in 1972, and the Airbus A320 was made in 1981. The Airbus A320 family was made to compete with the Boeing’s 737 family. In the mid 1980s, Airbus started to make medium sized planes. They were Airbus A330 and

Airbus A340. But, a bigger plane was to come. In mid 1988, group of Airbus engineers started to plan and make an UHCA (Ultra-High-Capacity-Plane) secretly. The reason to make a UHCA plane was to compete with the Boeing 747. The Boeing 747 was the most-selling ultra-high-capacity-plane in the 1980s. The result of the project was a twin-decked and 4-engined plane called the Airbus A380. Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, Korean Air, Lufthansa, and China Southern have the Airbus A380. Airbus started to get interest in military on the late 1990s. Their military debut planes are the A310-MRTT, the A340-MRTT and the A400M. The A400M had many delays. The Pakistan Air Force ordered the A310 MRTT. That was Airbus’s first step to military.

At my vacation I went to the Vivaldi Park. When I went there, there was not that many people. But when it became lunch time, people started to come out so I was disappointed. After riding a ski until 4:30, I went back to hotel and ate dinner. We came out at 7:00 and started to ride a night ski. There were not many people because it was night ski and they were saying it is dangerous. At nighttime it was fantastic because I saw Gary and Gil. We saw their concert, but I was too small to see their faces so I was really sad, but at last I saw their faces by going up to the chair. After they went off the stage the man said, “There will be one more event to you.” The event that he was saying was firecrackers, and it was fantastic because there were lots of fire working at the sky. After that, I rode few minutes more and went back to home. It was late. We got inside and brushed our teeth and went to sleep. Next day, I ate breakfast and at 10:30 I got off of my house and brought ski equipment. I wore them and started to ride the lift. At 12:30, I ate lunch and got ready to go home because my brother said he was tired but I was not. I was sad, but we decided to go home. We rode the car and went home.

I went to airport and ate a hamburger and got on the airplane. I found my seat but it was at 2nd floor so all of us went up it was very quiet. I loved it. It took 17 hours to go there, so I played games and ate foods, and when I arrived I almost fainted because there was a famous singer called T-ARA and they were at same airplane. I got an autograph and went to hotel happily. I got whole room by myself and John used room 306 and my sister used 309 and I used 301. It was biggest of all. I was very happy, then we change to comfortable clothes and went to see Hollywood and bought a kung fu panda doll and came back to hotel and ate steak. I did not sleep and watch WWE on my Ipad. Next day I got trouble to my sister then we moved to Toronto, Canada. Then I went to Niagara Falls and got hit by water at there. I met my friend from Korea and played at my room. My house was empty for few years so it was full with dust so I need to clean up it but was fun. Next day I moved to Boston and got hotel and went to Harvard University and play around. It was so hot that I needed to buy ice cream but it melt very fast. Now I need to go to Los Angles and buy souvenir and go back to Korea, and I saw T-ARA again. It was very fun.

There was a boy named Kevin. He was good at every subject except Art. His drawings were not good and his art grades were poor. His students in Art teased him. Many of the students called him the “Poor Drawer”. It was a shocking name to Kevin. ‘How come I don’t have what the others have?’ thought Kevin. Some days later, there was an Art Competition going on at the public school. The winner will get an awesome prize. Almost all of the schools were joined in the competition. But the drawing needed to be like real. If not, the person will be eliminated. At Kevin’s class, all of the students were joined in except Kevin himself. The competition starts in two days!! Kevin practices to draw nice pictures at home, but fails over and over. ‘Could I make it to the competition?’ thought Kevin. Just then he got a call from the school. “There’s only one ticket to the competition,” said the principle from the phone. There wasn’t much time. Without stopping, Kevin dashed to the school and got the ticket. The next day, the competition had started. Kevin was the last in the line. It took an hour until it was Kevin’s turn. When Kevin started, it took 45 minutes until he was finished. Then when he was finished, the scores were shown in the screen. Then Kevin was surprised. He was the winner!! The people cheered him and he lived happily ever after.

The Day I Slept LateJoshua Choi

On Saturday, I saw the movie ‘Real Steel.’ I slept at two o’clock in morning and I needed to wake up at seven o’clock. I started to watch the movie and when I was tired, I went to wash my face with cold water and I drank up a whole bottle of cold water. It made me a bit cold and made me less tired. When I was at the middle part of the movie I was bored, but I waited for the climax part. At the part where they fought, the main robot named Atom got crashed a lot by Zeus, the best robot that won the most time. Atom got smashed but he stayed still until the other robot got out of power. When Zeus got out of power, he walked looking drunk. At that moment, Atom smashed, crushed, and wrinkled Zeus.“One, two, three,” the umpire shouted. Zeus went up but couldn’t listen to the voice record. The man went to the controller and moved him with the joystick. At the last round, the judges gave the scores. Zeus won, but the fans thought that Atom won the game. When the movie ended I wanted to watch the movie again, but my dad shouted with anger in his face. So I went in. In 7’o clock, I wasn’t able to wake up. I got in a big trouble.

I am so TiredClaudia Lee

I am so tired, because I have so much to do in winter break. I need to do homework, baby-sit my cousins, and behave well during the winter break. My cousins are very talkative so I need to listen to every single word that they say and keep that my cousin doesn’t cry or get into fights. One cousin named Jessica is five years old makes many troubles. When she cries, I need to calm her down. When Shannon and I fight, I need to yell at her that she needs to stop talking to me, but she makes it worse. Daniel, that is Jessica’s brother, always yells at Jessica when she bothers him, that I need to make it stop or I need to fight against Daniel to stop or take Jessica out of situation. And I got a nose bleed 9 times in a week and I didn’t have much of sleep. I needed to fix the microphone that was in the dust, help grandma set up the dinner table, and clean the room for my siblings and share and sleep together the whole time and that whole winter break was tired, worse, and uncomfortable. Shannon and Daniel had a many fight happening in the winter break and I need to yell to them, “STOP!!!!!!” at the top of my lung. And make Jessica stop crying and help my grandma. This was totally nightmare for me. I am so tired.

I know that soon it’s the Thanksgiving Holiday! Also I heard from Ms. Griswold that we are having a party at Christian Life Center and that we would be going there tomorrow. We will eat turkey! Wow~I am so excited. How delicious is that turkey going to be? And also it’s been a long time that I didn’t eat the turkey. Few days ago, my parents said that on Thursday and Friday, we’ll go to Jeju Island for one day. I was so glad to hear that news. Jeju, hmm... I went there 3 times before, but it really doesn’t feel bad to keep going to the same place, because even though it is a small island, every time I go there, there’s so many new different things. We are leaving very early, so that we can have lots of time to stay in Jeju Island. I guess tomorrow my mom will pack the bags for our trip. I think I have to get up at 4:30 A.M. “Why your family go to travel every time they have time?”Because our family are traveling lovers. We already went to Japan 18 times! Totally the traveler! My grandparents went to almost every country in the world, except for the Antarctica. That’s why my parents and aunts love to travel and my brothers too. So I think it’s very important to use our time useful so we don’t waste our time. Maybe, it will be very short trip, but happy trip ever. I learned that use your time wisely.

Journey to a Greek Knight’s LifeHenry Kim

Once upon a time, when knights were plentiful, there was a ten-year-old boy named Jerry. He wanted to become a Greek Knight in the prophecy, but he had to be fifteen to be one. His trainer, Leonard, broke his leg so he could not train him for a while. He had to purchase his own armor. He only had a few drachmas, ancient Greek currency. He earned a few more by doing some jobs. Suddenly, someone said “Hey, great armor!” “Who are you?” asked Jerry. “I am Zeus, your uncle,” said Zeus, god of the sky. “Hey, he’s my son! Cronus would agree,” said Poseidon, god of the sea. Jerry was a half-blood, half god, half human. “It’s good as mine!” said Hades, god of the underworld. “ Uh, I need to train,” said Jerry. “Yeah, let’s leave him alone to train,” said Dionysus, god of wine. The gods all left and he was now alone. He went to his dorm and looked at his Greek god poster. He put “Jerseus” under Poseidon. Jerseus was his name in god form. He wanted to test his powers. He went to the Mediterranean, a five-minute walk, and took a dive. He dived about 1000 meters, but managed to surface easily. Five years later, he had became a knight and honored by the Greek king. He had achieved his goal to be a knight. It turned out that he was in the prophecy.
