Category A and E - By attending the Pesticide Recertification workshop at the Northern Green Expo on Friday, January 6, you are completing the recertification requirements in Categories A - Core and E - Turf and Ornamentals. This workshop has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertification workshop in 2011, and new-licensed pesticide applicators in 2011, must attend an MDA-approved workshop in 2012. By attending of the Pesticide Recertification track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain recertification credit.
The morning and afternoon start with general sessions that are required for all recertifying applicators. There are also breakout sessions where participants can choose sessions of interest. Applicators must attend the entire Pesticide Recertification track (4 general sessions plus 2 break-out sessions) to obtain MDA recertification credit. Attendance will be monitored. The MDA reserves the right to deny recertification credit to participants who arrive later than 30 minutes after the start of the program or who are absent during substantial portions of the program. Workshop participants should bring license identification cards to the workshop.
Category F (Aquatics) - The Northern Green Expo is again offering a Category F session at the 2012 Northern Green Expo on Thursday, January 5 from 2:00pm – 3:50pm. In order for licensed applicators to get an credit for Category F - Aquatics, they must attend both Thursday afternoon Aquatics Pesticide Recertification and the Friday Pesticide Recertification.
ATTENTION: Everyone seeking Pesticide Recertification must report to the MDA General
Session by 7:30 a.m. All sessions are also open to attendees who are not seeking Pesticide
Recertification, as space allows.

Plants: Finding the COOL Stuff! Lloyd Traven
Consumers are bored with the same old same old, retailers are tired of hearing about the 'latest and greatest' that is "not so much." We all need some sizzle, some excitement, but WHERE to start? Peace Tree Farm is known for finding that "wow factor" and bringing it to market. Come along, won't you?
9:30 AM - 10:25 AM | Ballroom A
Keynote - Top Performer: A Bold
Approach To Service and Life Carr Hagerman
As this economy continues to affect our lives and each of us has experienced some impact because of these changes and shifts, we have to find new ways to adapt to the challenges. Even in the midst of this ever changing tide of events, there are organizations and individuals that go beyond merely surviving, to thriving. They are the Top Performers, and their approach to service, work and life gives them competitive advantages. The good news is, anyone can learn to become a Top Performer! Carr Hagerman has been a street performer for over 30 years. Starting as a teenager, he’s not only been a successful performer, but has studied street performing for two decades. In his research, Carr discovered some performers who transcend entertainment, scripts and material by making deep and memorable connections with their audiences. Working in chaotic, distracted and often hostile environments, these performers know they will be remembered most when the audience has an unforced, emotional connection with the performer. When we make an emotional connection with those we work with and serve, we discover a powerful source of natural energy and inspiration. Some of the ideas you’ll hear about in his humorous and high energy presentation: • The necessity of a powerful, personal
commitment or claim • See your work as a performance that
generates stories. What are your stories? • Embrace change and challenge as the
tools of opportunity • To “Slow Down To Now,” and recognize
the amazing resources we have around

RIGHT NOW Lloyd Traven
Sparking interest, generating excitement---THAT is what Peace Tree Farm is known for bringing to garden centers. Waitea Gone Wild – Research of
Early Summer 2011 in Chicago
and Experiences Since 2006 Derek Settle
Waitea patch is a common disease of Poa annua on greens in Chicago. May to June, the fungus infects Poa annua leaf sheaths and causes narrow bright yellow ring symptoms. Rings are about 4 to 12 inches in diameter. Dr. Randy Kane noticed it on a green about 1985 with Dave Ward in Flossmoor. Until 2006 it was called Rhizoctonia zeae in Chicago. On the west coast, Waitea was being confused with Rhizoctonia cerealis or yellow patch. In 2005 Japanese scientists renamed this Rhizoctonia disease. Today it is called brown ring patch or Waitea patch. Confusion exists on how to control this disease. Settle will discuss recent research results in this session. 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM | 208CD

There are many practices emerging which help to properly manage excess water created by altering landscapes – water which ultimately ends up in our lakes and rivers. Reducing this runoff and properly treating the contaminants it contains is one sure way to preserve lakes and rivers and the life they support. Come participate in the Sustainable Environment Committee’s Reducing Runoff Roundtable discussions to share ideas and learn about why and how you can add these important practices to your company’s offerings. 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM | 208AB

Turf/Golf: Testing Alternatives to
Fungicides For Disease Control
on Golf Fairways Derek Settle
Dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) is our most persistent fungal disease that negatively affects turf. In the upper Midwest the predominant golf surfaces in play are highly susceptible turf species (e.g., creeping bentgrass or Agrostis stolonifera and annual bluegrass or Poa annua var. reptans). In
Chicago, dollar spot requires more input than any other turf pest. Fungicide cost is high for fairways since they represent the largest acreage in play. A growing interest is emerging in fungicide alternatives. Two reasons are often cited: Budgetary constraints and environmental stewardship. Still, surface blemishes are not easily tolerated by golfers who will often compare Chicago courses based on ball roll characteristics.
Alternative products to control dollar spot exist, but their efficacy remains largely unknown in many environments including Chicago (cool and humid). Products Rhapsody (Bacillus subtilis QST 713) and Ecoguard (Bacillus licheniformis SB3086) are biorationals. Another, DewCure (oxinane-methyloxirane) interrupts dew formation shortening leaf wetness duration. Products that spoon-feed nitrogen may also help since dollar spot increases with low N.
Our objective? To find a product without negative plant health effects that can suppress dollar spot on golf fairways. Our goal was to reduce fungicide input without sacrificing necessary quality (injury ≤ 5%). Results will be presented in this session.

Carr Hagerman Ontend Creative Partners
Carr Hagerman has been motivating sales and service professionals globally for the past 15 years. Beginning with the rollout of the wildly popular Fish! video,
then to Top Performer, he has developed an approach that is remarkably fresh, novel, and full of utility. He energizes and moves his audiences to action with an engaging message and approach that is both simple, instantly accessible, and always entertaining
Hagerman spent nearly 30 years as a professional street performer, beginning when he was only 14 years old working at the Renaissance Festival outside Minneapolis. This work led him to travel as a performer where he gained practical experience in the art of collaboration and connection.
In the later years of his performing career, he started to study great street performers, observing what techniques and tools they used to gain focus, how they kept the audience engaged and creatively dealt with hecklers. He learned first-hand why some performers were making thousands of dollars each day, while others went home with only pennies to show for their work. He discovered that it all came down to how they engaged the audience, invited participation and how these things ultimately led to energizing results. He refers to those performers as “radically engaged” Top Performers. Carr demonstrates how any business owner or organizational leader can apply the actions of the Top Performer to their own operation, and improve customer service results and employee retention.
Provocative, engaging and insightful, his current and past clients include Beyer Dynamic, Home Depot, Best Buy, Starbucks, American Express, Mont-Blanc, Purina Mills, Hilton Hotels, Apple Computer, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Wells-Fargo, Paramount Studios and many more.
