Olympic SuccessThe USA, gold medalists in 13 of the 16 Olympics in which

    it has played, has a remarkable 122-5 win-loss record for a 96.1

winning percentage. U.S. Olympic teams featuring NBA play-

ers are 37-3 and the U.S. has won four of the last five Olympic

titles when NBA players have participated (1992, 1996, 2000

and 2008).Men's basketball was first officially introduced international-

ly at the 1936 Olympics and the United States won 63 consecu-

tive Olympic Games before seeing the streak come to a halt

with the 51-50 controversial loss to the Soviet Union in the

1972 gold medal contest. Regrouping to win 21 straight

between the 1976 Olympics and the semifinals of the 1988

How Did This All Happen?NBA players first represented the U.S. in international

basketball at the 1992 Tournament of the Americas in Portland,

Ore., the Olympic qualifying tournament for FIBAs Americas

Zone (North, South and Central America and the Caribbean).

But how did NBA players become eligible for FIBA competi-tions?

Until 1989, FIBA's rules for international competitions

prevented only NBA players from participating in the Olympics

or World Championships. Teams representing the USA at the

Olympics (1936-88) and World Championships (1950-90)

consisted of collegians or Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) play-

    ers.

After a vote to change the rule fell just short (31-27, with 16

federations abstaining) of passing on June 30, 1986, a proposal

to allow "open competition" overwhelmingly passed by a vote

    of

56-13 on April 7, 1989, at a specially convened FIBA World

Congress. That vote cleared the way for NBA players' partici-pation in FIBA events. Approximately 38 months later, USA

Basketball sent its now legendary Dream Team to the 1992

Tournament of the American and then the 1992 Barcelona

Olympics. The USA collection of NBA superstars at the 92

Tournament of the Americas rolled to a perfect 6-0 mark and

earned a berth in the Olympics. The famed squad then finished

8-0 to capture the Olympic gold medal by an average point

difference of 43.8 points a game, and spurred by the Dream

Team, the popularity of basketball reached an all-time high.

USA Coaching Staff RerunThe same USA Basketball Men's National Team coaching

staff of head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and assistants Jim

Boeheim, Mike D'Antoni and Nate McMillan, which led the

American men to a win-loss record of 37-1 between 2006-08

and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, returned to

coach the USA Basketball Men's National Team program in

    2010-2012.

USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo officially

announced on July 21, 2009, that Basketball Hall of Famementor Krzyzewski would return as head coach of the USA

Basketball Men's National Team program for 2010-2012, and

that Boeheim, D'Antoni and McMillan would also return as

    USA assistant coaches.

When you have a good thing going you don't mess with it.

We accomplished a great deal last quadrennium and we want to

keep the ball rolling in the right direction, said Colangelo.

Mike and the staff did an incredible job last

quad and he is more than entitled to have another

run at it. I've said it over and over, he was the

right guy at the right time and that is still true.

USA Basketball's National Team program dur-

    ing the three-year period between 2006 and 2008compiled a striking 37-1 overall win-loss record

and just as importantly reestablished the USA team

and its members as positive ambassadors for the

    United States and the sport.

The USA squad culminated the quadrennium by

finishing 8-0 to reclaim the gold medal at the 2008

Beijing Olympics, the USA's first gold in a major international

    competition since 2000.

In the teams first competition of the 2010-12 cycle,

Krzyzewski, Boeheim, McMillan and then Toronto Raptors

head coach Jay Triano, who filled in for DAntoni who was

unable to travel because of back issues, was the FIBA World

Championship and the U.S. finished 9-0 to capture the world

    title.

Olympic RepeatersCarmelo Anthony and LeBron James are going for a rare

trifecta of Olympic appearances. The pair were members of the

U.S. squad that collected the bronze medal at the 2004 Athens

Olympics, and were part of the USAs golden run at the 2008

Bejing Olympics. Currently the United States boasts of one

three-time mens basketball Olympian, David Robinson. All

together, 18 players have appeared in two or more Olympics.

Double Gold Or BetterWinning Olympic gold once is an achievement of a lifetime,

winning Olympic gold twice is a remarkable feat and USA

Basketball has an elite group of multi-time Olympians.

Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James have an opportunity to

be named to a third U.S. Olympic Team and possibly earn a

third Olympic medal. Also working toward a second Olympics

are 2012 finalists Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

The elite multi-time Olympian grouping is led by three-time

Olympian and three-time medalist David Robinson (1996, 1992,

1988). The USA's only men's basketball player to make three

Olympic appearances, The Admiral earned two gold (1992,

1996) and one bronze medal (1988) in Olympic action.

Twelve other U.S. players have appeared in two Olympics

and won two gold medals including Charles Barkley (1992,

    1996), Patrick Ewing (1984, 1992), Burdette Haldorson (1956,

    1960), William Hougland (1952, 1956), Michael Jordan (1984,

    1992), Jason Kidd

    (2000, 2008), Robert

    Kurland (1948, 1952),Karl Malone (1992,

    1996), Chris Mullin

    (1984, 1992), Gary

    Payton (1996, 2000),

    Scottie Pippen (1992,

    1996), and John

    Stockton (1992, 1996).

    Additionally, there are

    four players have played

    in a pair of Olympics

    and won one gold and

    one bronze medal, the

    foursome includesAnthony (2004, 2008),

    James (2004, 2008),

    Mitch Richmond (1988,

    1996) and Dwyane

    Wade (2004, 2008).

On Top Of The WorldThe USA men stand on top of the FIBA world rankings with

an 852 rating, while Spain (730) is No. 2, Argentina (673) is

No. 3, Greece (488) is No. 4 and Lithuania (426) closes out the

top five. Turkey (302), Italy (272), Serbia (232), Australia (224)

and China (219.7) rank sixth through 10th.

In fact, the United States ranks No. 1 in all five of FIBA's

world ranking categories, including combined, men's, women's,

    boys and girls.

The FIBA rankings are calculated within the scope of a two

Olympic Games cycle (including qualifying competitions at

    FIBA Zone level). The

    weighing of the U18 and

    U16 Zone

    Championships havebeen adapted to frequen-

    cy of competitions.

    Whenever a new cham-

    pionship is played the

    oldest championship of

    that category drops out.

    The FIBA Ranking is

    then recalculated.

    Since 2008, USA

    Basketball mens and

    womens teams have

    compiled a sterling 134-

    6 win-loss record in

    FIBA or FIBA Americas

    competitions. USA

    teams are the current

    mens and womens

champions of the Olympics and the FIBA World

Championships; FIBA womens U19 world champions; the

mens and womens title holders for the FIBA U17 World

Championships; and the mens and womens U18 and U16

    FIBA Americas champions.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic mens basketball team (above) captured gold and the 2010 USA World Championship Team

(below) won gold to become the first back-to-back Olympic and World Championship gold medalist since 1994.

What Happened In 2010-2006What Happened In 2010-2006Since USA Basketball instigated its mens national

team program in 2005, USA national teams have

compiled a 49-1 overall win-loss record, and have

captured gold at the 2010 FIBA World Championship,

2008 Beijing Olympics and 2007 FIBA Americas

Championship, while earning a bronze medal at the 2006

    FIBA World Championship.

2010 FIBA World ChampionshipWithout a single member of the 2008 Olympic gold medal

team listed on its roster, the strength of the USA Basketball

National Team program that Jerry Colangelo and Mike

Krzyzewski had developed was proven at the 2010 FIBA World

Championship in Istanbul, Turkey, as the Americans finished

9-0 to win gold and capture the USA's first gold medal at the

    event since 1994.

Kevin Durant was named the MVP of the 10 WorldChampionship after setting a USA World Championship scoring

record with 205 points in nine games for a record 22.8 ppg.,

while adding 6.1 rpg., and shooting 55.6 percent from the field,

45.6 percent from 3-point, and 91.2 percent from the foul line.

Relying on its depth and aggressive defensive play, the

USA won its nine games by an average of 24.6 points a game.

The U.S. defense limited its foes to just 68.2 points a game and

2008 Beijing OlympicsThe 2008 U.S. Olympic Teams 8-0 record and gold medal

show was the culmination of three years of preparation,

    commitment and effort.

Building a USA National Team program that ultimately

consisted of 33 of this countrys best players, and the very best

coaches, USA Basketball proceeded to create a true USA

National Team program that sought a three-year commitment

    from its coaches and players.

Of the 12 players named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, six

were part of the 2006 USA Basketball Men's World

Championship Team, and eight were part of the 2007 FIBA

Americas Championship that qualified the U.S. for the 2008

Olympics. Three players - Anthony, Howard and James, weremembers of both teams.

The Americans opened the Beijing competition facing host

China and in one of the most viewed basketball games of all-

FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, and fin-

ished 10-0 to win gold and capture one of the FIBA Americas

zone's two qualifying berths for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
